They thankfully were quite simply to do when looking at other videos though, and I just watched your guide the rest of the way since I just really didn't want to take out the ribbon cables lol. Great video overall!
You do have to, leaving them in and transporting everything over can cause damage. You shouldn't be leaving them in let along let everything hang still connected
Because 3rd party JoyCon shells include that center plastic piece to match the rest of the JoyCon, whereas the guy in this video left the default center plastic piece in to avoid dealing with the trigger buttons removal, which I can tell you is a huge pain in the ass that’ll make you never want to see another spring in your life.
For those of you who are swapping original nintendo shells..don't forget to take that little sticker flap thing thats right under the joystick touching the shell, it prevents dust from getting inside the joycon!
I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!! a couple years ago I tried using tutorials to swap joycon shells with a pretty atomic purple. It was so intimidating and the ribbons were a pain. I ended up breaking the right controller and the other one was slightly bulgy but manageable. Well I came across your video thinking about trying it again and it just clicked. Yes there were some parts I just had to quickly look up like the middle part because I had a red joy con but I felt more confident handling it because of how you handled it. People complaining you were going to fast are silly because you can pause and rewind. You showing how fast it can be done really gave me confidence for some reason. I have successfully shelled 2 sets of joycons thank you! None are broken or bulged. It took me 2 and a half hours the first time because I was super cautious still but the second set I loosened up some and remembered some the the steps before getting to the next part. The second set took about one hour. Yeah its not going to be 10 or even 20 minutes. Don't get discouraged just relax and expect it to take time just don't yank the ribbons hard and it should be fine.
@@3000Crystal first time 2 and a half hours. Second time 1 hour. One you get familiar with the components inside you feel more comfortable. I really recommend one of those precise toolkit tweezers in case you need to take out a ribbon to change the middle part.
@@darkyusuki That's actually not that long compared to what I heard from other people. But I guess it's cause you don't need to take out the ribbons. Cause when I saw the other videos I didn't even try because I knew that the ribbons would mess me up. I just ordered better screwdrivers from amazon that fits much more better than the one the kit gave me and hopefully they aren't too stripped when I first tried to open it
Took me about an hour and a half with this video, just being extra careful. Plus, I had to change the triggers which wasn’t covered in this video, but after finding another video covering that part, I came right back here. This made it so easy and stress free. Also, keep in mind your joycons have likely not been opened so the batteries, rumble motors, and the RFID (?) plate thing are all slightly glued in. I had a tiny plastic pry too which helped. And don’t forget the dust shields around the joy sticks, they just have a little adhesive and can be reused. This guy didn’t have his installed ...
Hey man , I did your tutorial and I gotta say you really helped big time, this video made me so calm I wasn’t nervous at all when I replaced my joycons, you sir get a like
This video is what kickstarted my hobby of tearing joycons apart. if it werent for this video I probably would have destroyed my original pair of joycons, but thanks to it I now have 4 freshly swapped joycon pairs.
Thank you so much for doing this video! Not only is it super impressive, but it gave me the confidence to finally try this for myself after re-shelling my pro controllers. I went with the retro see through turquoise, just like my old N64, and it gives me such wonderful nostalgia every time I pick up my switch :)
Used this today to swap out my shells with ones that mimic the Animal Crossing Switch ones 😁😁 Happy to report everything went well! I did also have to switch out the middle plastic bit, but I managed to do it without detaching the ribbon cable from the board (ribbon cables are the bane of my existence). This is probably the only tutorial I've seen that doesn't make you detach any ribbon cables, and I appreciate you making this.
Thank you so much for this, I have been watching other tutorials in prep to change shells for a friend and have been worrying so much about messing something up but I just completed my first shell swap with help from your video with no errors whatsoever so thank you again you made everything super clear and simple to follow. Earn yourself a like and sub from me.
Dude GREAT tutorial!! Just used it to make my joy cons an atomic purple. Probably took about 30 mins for me since I did change out the middle part with the ZL/ZR buttons. Honestly way better than some of the other tutorials out there.
I followed a stupid ifixit guide that had me stripping the thing down to its component parts. After I did the right one I was sure you could just leave all the ribbons attached so thanks for this. Tip for anyone reading this, if you do remove any ribbons whatever you do DO NOT remove the ZR/ZL ribbon, it's an absolute twat to get back in and the little grey clip that holds the ribbon in place is made of cheese!
While this video was helpful, part of the reason it was so fast is that you didn’t remove the trigger from the middle part. I wanted to replace the middle part too which proved to be a bit more difficult but still not impossible
I did it! Wasn't that bad. For those who want to change the trigger - watch the jerryrigeverything video where he does it. This guy doesn't and keeps the grey middle piece as it is which imo makes the joycon look ugly as it doesn't match. The springs aren't that bad to re-assemble - just do it at an angle. I also recommend watching Macho Nacho Production's version if this video at the same time. Fortunately my joycon are fine! I'd highly recommend getting some tweezers as they helped a lot.
I was a backer of the Etikons, and I was super excited when I got them. Not the first time opening up joycons, also am pretty experienced disassembling electronics, so I was pretty confident. Did it perfectly, no physical damage to anything. Then I booted it up, right joycon was dead for some reason. Did all the troubleshooting I could think of, dead. Ordered a new right joycon off of ebay to do another swap, vowing to make sure I would be even more careful. After it arrived 4 days later, I took both joycons out and prepared for a swap. Suddenly my right joycon worked again. Currently 40 bucks down the hole. This universe hates me.
I really didn’t think I’d be able to do this by myself. I was thinking of paying $60 for someone else to do them and have to wait a week to get them back. But I did it on my own in less than an hour! You rock!!!
I MADE IT!!! Thanks to you! My first ever time doing something like that!!! In 10 minutes you explained what other can in 1 hour...and you did better. Thanks !!!
I absolutely love the confidence while you swapped everything out. I also didn’t know that lifting on the sl/sr rail would open it easier. Much appreciated, You earned yourself a sub m8.
He inspired me to try, then again I have joycons with broken shells so no big loss. Hoping for the best and preparing for many rewind and pause sessions. Thanks
Great tutorial, it took me about 2.5 hours because I ended up having to undo some stuff because one of my buttons on the left joy-con turned and then i realized the battery tray was a different color so it was creating a split color from the shell I was swapping to and had to undo those too and then I had to disconnect that short ribbon cable on the right joy-con when switching the battery tray over and that was a pain in the butt to reconnect without having tweezers LOL but was not your fault, I love your video and it helped out a lot and helped me understand the process much better than ANY of the other ones who make it SO complicated by disconnecting ALL of the components.
Oh man I didn't realize that I didn't have to unplug any ribbon cables *Facepalm*. That would have saved me so much time. Definitely the best tutorial I've seen for this.
@@CptnAlex You shouldnt be removing them. keeping them all attached and hanging all of the internals from the individual parts can definitely cause damage.
used this for moral support while I swapped mine today. Cheers! There were a few parts I did differently because mine hadn't been changed before but otherwise this was helpful to have. Especially to make sure all the screws went back in the right place!
Wow, I watched this tutorial and it made it seem much easier than others I've seen! I only took one ribbon out to swap the middle plastic bit, aside from that it all stayed together and it's working perfectly
Hey so I also wanna take the middle part out. I got my stuff coming today so what did you do as an extra step to get that middle part out that he didn't do? Do you have a link to another video that shows how to do that extra step?
I got the middle part out without detaching cables from the board You can position the middle piece in a way where it'll rest on the table without the board on or under it. Use a tool to gently pry the ZR/ZL button up. Under that there's a screw. Just undo that and screw the cable into the new middle piece, put the ZR/ZL button back on by aligning the little pegs with the springs and just pressing straight down until it snaps in place. Super quick to do
Great tutorial. My first time swapping shells took me about an hour. Some things I noticed as a first timer: -Get a screwdriver with magnetic bits. It'll save you SO much time. The kit I bought already came with a screwdriver that wasn't magnetic, so I didn't bother buying another one. I ended up using tweezers to place the screws in first. -The dangling parts (i.e. the dangling battery and rumble motor) is anxiety-inducing but as long as you don't pull on it even the slightest bit, nothing will fall off. I made the mistake of accidentally yanking the Slide Lock connector out but thankfully nothing snapped. Thanks for the tutorial!

They thankfully were quite simply to do when looking at other videos though, and I just watched your guide the rest of the way since I just really didn't want to take out the ribbon cables lol. Great video overall!
This is exactly what I did. Halfway through i just switched over to some other dudes video then i came back🤣
I always wondered why people were taking the ribbon cables out? Makes more sense to leave them in unless they absolutely have to.
You do have to, leaving them in and transporting everything over can cause damage. You shouldn't be leaving them in let along let everything hang still connected
@@hndhldmusic Technology is more solid than you think. Doing this won't cause any damage.
Long story short: It’s just safer that way.
Hannah
....I was fine with it.
He sounds like he is trying to sell me a shamwow
How long did it take you?
Thanks! Just finished swapping my grey joycons to burnt orange ones!!! I liked the fast pace.
Why would you dislike this video? Straight forward and straight to the point. I love video guides like these during projects!!
When messing around with techonology one must have confidence than an entire splatoon in a battle field.
Godzilla had a stroke trying to read this and fucking died
I just finished replacing and holy that was way easier than I expected... Thanks for the best tutorial for this!!
Glad to help!
The absolute best advice. ZR/ZL is a nightmare (and unfortunately opens on its own sometimes)
I only needed to replace the left joycon. I just wanna thank you for this informative video. It was very helpful. Thanks bro.
Thanks! I watched the first joycon I managed to do the second without watching. Tested everything works.
I really didn’t think I’d be able to do this by myself. I was thinking of paying $60 for someone else to do them and have to wait a week to get them back. But I did it on my own in less than an hour! You rock!!!
Woohooo! So glad it worked for you! $60 is insane! We charge our customers $25 for shell swaps...
@@CptnAlex Where do I go for this service if you still offer them of course! Am interested :)
This helped me a lot, thank you so much! Got me some sexy green see through joy-cons now!
Thanks
This is the best tutorial i have seen on this and i have watched like 5. Thank you for sharing this.
This boy is savagely executing these. Like a nascar pit crew.
The lack of sorting with the screws stresses me out
Instructions unclear, my cat is in the dishwasher...
this will be my first time ever doing this. and this gave me the boost of doing it. thank you sir!
Quinn Yep! That’s why I made this tutorial. As far as I know there are NO tutorials out there that tell you you can leave the cables attached!
@@CptnAlex You shouldnt be removing them. keeping them all attached and hanging all of the internals from the individual parts can definitely cause damage.
Alex Verrette no it can’t
@@hndhldmusic dude its perfectly fine if you leave them chill bud just be a little careful thats all.
used this for moral support while I swapped mine today. Cheers!
There were a few parts I did differently because mine hadn't been changed before but otherwise this was helpful to have. Especially to make sure all the screws went back in the right place!
The confidence you have just janking on those ribbons is just amazing
When he put in the arrows I spent the next 5 minutes wondering how he knew which ones were which 🤦🏽
Jerry : this ribbons are extremely fragile, be careful
This: yeet !
Wow, I watched this tutorial and it made it seem much easier than others I've seen! I only took one ribbon out to swap the middle plastic bit, aside from that it all stayed together and it's working perfectly
So glad I could help!
@@CptnAlex Think I watched the IGN one and they made it look way more complicated and I was going to avoid it.
Hey so I also wanna take the middle part out. I got my stuff coming today so what did you do as an extra step to get that middle part out that he didn't do? Do you have a link to another video that shows how to do that extra step?
I got the middle part out without detaching cables from the board
You can position the middle piece in a way where it'll rest on the table without the board on or under it.
Some things I noticed as a first timer:
-Get a screwdriver with magnetic bits.
Just finished swapping joy con shells in about an hour! (this is including distractions lol) thank you so much for this video. For anyone thinking about doing it, just do it along side this video and you'll be fine :)
Thanks so much..took my 3+ hours last Xmas changing my sons housings to NES..this guide got my through a second time for the SNES housings in 25 mins or so....
Thanks for this fast and simple tutorial Alex, i've been doing Gadgets Guru's way for a good while now and at first it took me 16 hours on my first try, 4 hours on the 2nd round set, and now an hour on my 5th set round, which involved undoing the cables on the joycon circuit board and re attaching the cables back on.
With this sweet tutorial, i can probably do shell swaps in 10 minutes now too.
Glad I could help!
most videos I've seen look so difficult but yr video gave me confidence to swap the shells thanks dude!!! 😎
This took me awhile to do but it was a lot of fun. I would estimate it took me about 20 mins per joycon. I also put both joycon release buttons incorrectly. Everything else works flawlessly though so i'm not mad
Oh my gosh.... I just switched mine out in 15.....I have never done anything like this and besides taking longer to screw the screws in and out, I could totally follow this. I had anxiety doing the first one but then I just finished it and put it on my switch and it worked just fine. I am so freaking proud of myself. THANK YOU 🙏🏻!!!
So glad it went so well for you!
I followed your video and it was way better than what i expected. They were so easy to change! I had to change the battery cover as well but that was an easy fix too. Thank you!
Were can you buy the shells you had on already? They are awesome!
They are somewhat expensive tho
Simple and straightforward guide thank u 👌👌 needed to get inside my joycon to clean it and then this was ideal
UNDER 10 mins really makes me wana try this now. Im sure itll take me 2 days but seeing you do it inspired me

Me: "good save bud, props to you."
how can I get a stripped screw out. I only need to take one screw out and I’m tempted to just break the shell
SAME! Ugh..
Put a rubber band over the screwhead and screw through the rubber band. The rubber will fill in the gaps that your screwdriver cant get to
If you have small clippers or pliers break the shell you won't need it and if the screw is really striped there isn't much else you can do, I've broken the shells off of 2 or 3 joycons and the worst thing that happened to me was I broke the front plate too but that doesn't matter if you have a new one.
That sword and shield clear joycon Shells look amazing imo
right i kinda wanna do that
I know this is an old video but it’s awesome! Will definitely be looking to possibly swap my shells.
I just got some of my own shells! They're pastel pink (L) and purple (R). I'm definitely using this tutorial when I switch them!
Thank you sooooo much! I just bought some shells and definitely couldn't have done it without your guide!!
i really wished i watched this when doing my left joycon. however, you made the right joycon wayyy easier for me so thank you
I was able to take apart and put back my joycons with ease after observing just once very fine and clear instructions way faster too than taking the ribbon cable off but do be careful not to damage the ribbon cables, I didn’t have much worry with them though. Great video! 👍🏻
Finally someone that notates the correct screw color to use for each section.
Great tutorial, thanks! I’ll be sure to use this when I get my transparent housings next week
Thank you for the straightforward and quick guide! It took me around an hour altogether but my next ones will be much faster :)
dear people,... TAKE YOUR TIME. it's not a race! this man is crazy good at doing this!
it took me 3 hours I think but I had to fix the shell slightly. figure out why it was bulging (it was an imperfection in the shell)
Wayyyyyy less complicated than the last time I tore my joycons apart haha. Thank you! =)
Thank you SO much for this tutorial!
It made switching my shells so much easier! Everything worked out perfectly took about 30 minutes for my first joycon and about 7 minutes for the second one! Once you finish one it’s easier that’s for sure!
Wow! Great video, I very successfully changed over my shells in probably only about 20 mins with the pausing. I even had a few of the ribbon cables fall out, but was able to push them back in place. Everything works :)) Now I'm going to try and tackle the software and get the colors on screen to match.
I just finished changing shells on mine! Thank you, you made it easy for me :)

I'll be sure to come back to this when I replace my shells in a week or two.
Wait so what are those other 2 screws holding on to? Why didn’t you have to unscrew them? 2:20
This is amazing to watch, and super entertaining. I’ve replaced four shells so far, and the only thing I wish he would’ve touched on is that for a lot of shells, you also have to replace the battery tray, which in my opinion is the hardest part.
I'd love to change the shells of my joy cons but I heard that also the ExtremeRate shells after a while start to peel off and lose colour...where did he get his shells from?
