So I sold my regular switch to get the animal crossing one... when i could’ve just spent $35 👁👄👁 Anyways, this is extremely helpful!! I’ll definitely be telling my friends to try this so we can all match
Don't feel too bad. Modding the switch also means losing the warranty. Which would mean that if you messed it up, and Nintendo could be able to tell you had been opening the switch or joycons up, they would refuse to help you. This is super cool, but only something one should do if they know how to do it right. I have seen so many people write about having broken their joycons etc. by modding them. I'm not against modding AT ALL
How much did you sell yours for? I sold my V1 for $250 so only “loss” $50. Totally worth it IMO because I didn’t have to look for adequate parts or worry about voiding my warranty. I’ve already taken full advantage of it once because of the joycon drift issue.
@@DammitJeff It’s alright, your intentions were amazing and I’m sure you’ve already helped a lot of normal people that just want their switch to look nicer, like me (even tho I don’t have one 🥲). There’s always gonna be people that ruin stuff like this we just gotta be more watchful unfortunately.
I paid $450 for one of these in march because it was the only thing my sister wanted for her birthday. Now I kinda want to do a shell swap on my red and blue joycons... but my hands shake way too much.
yo, my hands shake SO MUCH and i’ve shell swapped my joycons/replaced the batteries so much. the shaking doesn’t matter much, it’s more frustrating than genuinely a risk for breaking anything, as long as you work slowly and keep track of where your screws go!!
I recently picked up an animal crossing switch from Wal-Mart even after seeing this guide. I decided to sell my old Nintendo switch to my sister who wanted a switch for about 150 half the price of the original switch. My sister wanted an animal crossing switch as well, but couldn't afford 300 so this guide was very helpful for her! Since it was an older switch she did buy the shell definitely made the console feel like new, and the replacement of the joycon shells gave them that feel of being new without that feeling of the paint being worn down from sweat. Over all she basically got an animal crossing switch for only 185, 150 being from me selling her the switch and the 35 being from the shells so overall this saved her money! Thank you for this guide!
@@maybeIazy first of all making assumptions like that is rude, second of all we are both adults in our 20's, if we where still kids then yeah it would be kind of rude to ask her to buy it off of me, and still she only payed 150 for the switch, used switches online are going for almost the same price as new ones so finding one at half price is almost impossible. Really helpful guide! managed to switch mine into an animal crossing shell thanks to you! 😄 tho as a beginner I had no idea how to properly remove ribbon cables, not sure how to yank it out, so I ended up using the method where the all the ribbon cables are attached
Even as someone who works on iPhones and other small devices rather regularly, I will always take apart the switch joycons fully as it is WAYYYYY too risky to do the method everyone was saying. It's just crazy to think a beginner could do that first time.
Honestly I had no problems myself doing that because I knew I’d have more trouble getting the ribbon cables plugged back in and risking damaging them than just carefully maneuvering them around as I took it apart
I left the cables attached for my first customization. All except the joystick cable… it makes it a lot easier. IMO, it’s more risky for a beginner to disconnect and reconnect a ribbon cable than it is to just leave them alone. I had never done any kind of electronics work or modification, and I knew I’d have trouble plugging the cables back in. If you’re extremely delicate and pay attention, it shouldn’t cause any issues to leave them plugged in.
I've only done 2 shell swaps, my first time I did the "keep it all together" method. It wasn't too bad, but disconnecting everything actually panned out being easier, albeit taking longer. Awesome video man, earned a new sub!
From experience, I feel like undoing all the ribbons for the Joycons is much better than leaving them in because its less messy and you’re less likely to break anything. Also if you’re doing this for your personal switch I don’t think you need to go fast, it only saves a considerable amount of time if you work in a repair environment and you do a lot of shell swaps (which isn’t even that common anyway)
I...didn't realize that there was a particular shortage of those at the time. Ironically enough, I just picked one up at Walmart for MSRP around that time. Not because I wanted the Animal Crossing, but because it was the only one available.

I don’t think they’d really care as long as you bought the switch. Both versions have the same retail price, so they aren’t gaining anything from you buying from the price scalpers vs buying a different version and customizing it. In fact, if they sold the parts needed to customize it, they’d stand to make even more money with minimal extra work, since they can sell the parts without needing to assemble them.
@@elijah6169 pretty sure they mentioned it just as an example of what you can achieve with the customization, I don't see the point of it either, but there's probably some folk out there who does
7:11 no way! i am going to be making a customized switch sometime soon (when i can afford one) i am really excited to do it! i am also doing the buttons!
Thank you so much for this, I think you just gave me a new addiction lol. I just opened a joycon for the first time. I had to replace the latch in my blue joycon because it was no longer staying attached to the switch. Was fucking terrifying, but I did it and now I'm looking forward to at some point giving this a try.
Took apart my controllers for the first time and i wish i knew about not needing to remove the ribbon cables. The left joycon was the most painful one. Heres some very good tips for people. 1) All the replacement buttons only go in one way due to the design of the buttons. Only one that doesn't is the button used to eject the joycons from the unit. I had both of mines in the wrong way and was not able to press down on the button. 2) I find that keeping the battery connected helps a lot to make sure the everything works before putting it all together. When i was putting in the new trigger buttons, i would press on them to see if that lights up the indicators. 3) As Jeff said, use some force when unscrewing the screws if you dont have the Y00 bit. 4) Be patient and slow.
My Gf wanted just the joycon case so I just case swapped them. It was terrifying to do them for the first time. But after about 3 hours I got them both done. They were super happy.
“All the other screws want attention. Don’t give it to them!” iconic Also: “I heard the games taste like skittles when you lick them. Give it a go!” Me: What wise words, I shall now proceed to try.
FR I waited after Christmas for it to come because I got the Animal Crossing version (I bought it for my sisters) PLUS what a coincidence that the only ones left were the grey kind, recommended to late, but I don't care. It's just funny😂
I’d be too scared I’d do something wrong from the beginning and mess it up. So I would not do this unless I know there’s 100% chance that nothing will happen while doing this 😬😅
honestly the back plate is super easy so i would recommend trying it! there’s nothing that can go wrong as long as you don’t like go crazy and snap your switch in half lmao.
You need to have more confidence and self worth, but it's good to play it safe. Personally I'm a little bit of a risk taker and like doing things outside my comfort zone 😁

I had to replace the latch in my blue joycon because it was no longer staying attached to the switch.

Honestly I'd never do that... Seems like a very precise and very delicate work.
Excellent video. Especially the modifying of the joycon firmware. I strongly suggest anyone doing a case swap for the joycons do that to maintain consistency and to ensure you get the free in-game switch.
I just found an Animal Crossing switch at Walmart at bought it. So I have no clue why I'm watching this, but it was so soothing.
I agree with this. I am satisfied with my original switch, yet just listening to the clips, snaps, and button pushing was soothing.
