Hi Zack I had attempted this Project on my Nintendo switch I am amazed on how this turned out it looks Mint :) Thank you for a highly detailed video on this, as I had managed to put everything back together again. ha ha . Thank you from Perth Australia
Zaori it’s actually pretty easy, I did it in like 40 minutes a year ago, now I came back cause I want to give my sister a pink switch for Christmas or maybe for New Years
Alabaster1223 that sucks, rip playing Splatoon 2... it’s so annoying that you can’t remap the controls in games like that, maybe someone should make a mod for that. The things we have to do for beauty
Did mine with a similar kit a few years ago, damn those joycons got me sweating... If you happen to do that kind of mod, don't tighten the screws!!! buttons will stop working!!! If this happens, open them loosen the holding screws (about 1/8 to 1/4 turn) and retry
For those who are scared of taking apart joy cons, go get some already done from Etsy. You’ll be paying upward of 150% the MSRP of new Joy-cons, but for me it was worth it.
I literally said “oh cool. If my joycons start to drift, might as well swap the shell once it’s open to replace the stick”. To this day, they are still not drifting.
Just replaced my old blue/red shells with a brand new Green/Pink ones, your guide was extremelly usefull, now my hoycons look like new!! and only for 10 bucks! Thank you :D
Cool, but I don't feel I'm brave enough. But my little brother had more faith in me. Now he has cool transparent blue joycons. Damn, now I want transparent purple joycons. It took me one hour and 23 minutes to finish both joycons. I feel like I'm a good big sister, I didn't even know I could do this. Thanks for the video I couldn't do it without this good put together video. Everything came out fine.
Been meaning to type this for the longest, but I referred to this video SEVERAL times to do multiple switch case mods for customers who come into the retro game store that I work for, and I honestly want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this video. It's really easy to understand and very easy to follow. I've referred to this video since December of 2017. Few years late, but thanks man!! You're the bomb!!

He does voice over his videos. So I'm thinking it's not really too hard to just throw togeather a bunch of disassembly clips, compile them togeather and voice over.
Mohammad Issa me getting mine wednesday tho i wanted to buy at launch but people said to me it was better if i waited and it wasn’t for nothing lol bc allot of people had problems with a dyschinking (dont know how to spell that) and the dock scratching the switch but now nintendo has put pads inside docks

Not sure which country you're from, but in the US, the warranty is fine so long as you don't modify the hardware, and have the original casings when sending it in for warranty. Simply changing the casing DOES NOT void the warranty.

It's ok. It's just like how i'm waiting for a plug-in disc player so I can play BOTW on the switch with a Wii-U disc. Or a Tv remote app like the Wii-U's Tv button. Missed opportunities...
i'm saving money for a switch. tbh you should try that, but since i started no too long ago i only saved about 23$ (sigh) i've got a long road to go :(
@@neilhaggerty6195 with the switch homebrew scene growing more and more, that doesnt sound impossible. considering i can play the wii-u version of BOTW on my pc in 1440P at 90 fps with a ps4 controller.
@Alp Gürek It's fine. I also spent around £30 on stuff to fix the stripped screws like other screwdrivers. At least with the other screwdrivers I was able to mod my PS4 controller.

I did this in the same order, making sure to watch every step and to do them in order, starting with the left joycon. It functioned great, and it looks fantastic. PLEASE DO THAT FOR THE RIGHT JOYCON AS WELL! I ended up making the mistake of thinking that this was going to be the same kind of stuff, and it is to an extent, but it’s also got a few more parts and is more complex than the left one. And when you’re working in tight spaces, EVERYTHING has to be lined up just right or you might crush something or accidentally let something loose, and that’s exactly what I did. It can no longer connects to my switch, and because I wasn’t thinking I fully screwed the back panel onto the rest of the controller and the screws stripped so I can no longer open it to fix my mistakes, if they even can be fixed. With that, I now have to go back and get a new right joycon for $50 and get the clear joycon casings for another $20 and with tax and shipping that’s almost $88 to redo this. Make sure to set aside maybe 2-3 hours, and be really sure EVERYTHING is perfect before you fully close everything up. (Also, make sure that what you’re popping off the LZ and RZ triggers that you’re keeping your thumb over them as you’re removing them. It’s EXTREMELY hard to do, but it’s worth it. When I did it they flew away and I only found one of them. It still works perfectly fine with only one spring surprisingly, but it’s probably best to have them both inside the system as intended, you know? I also lost a couple screws, but luckily the clear shells I bought cane with some screws, but be careful! These screws are sometimes too long for certain holes, but all you need to do is get a basic pair of pliers with nippers on them and just carefully cut the tips off of them to get them the right size.) Hope all of this helped! UPDATE: I was able to open up the controller again by very carefully sanding down the tip of my Y shaped screwdriver and was able to open up all the screws. After that, I was able to instantly able to find my problem. The ribbon cable that connects the actual joycon to the tablet was slightly askew. I relieved the pressure and then pushed it all the way in, and tested it, and it worked perfectly. I was so happy to save that money. I ended up replacing the small Y shaped screws with small X shaped screws that came with the clear shells on both controllers and now it’s perfectly fine. I can open them up again with no problems if the problem ever comes back. Again, I hope this all helped. After all, I’d like to see this if I was doing this project.
I have a problem also .my right joy con wont charge and it connects to my switch here and there can someone give me advices ? To how i can fix the problem ?
Mario Hernandez Re open the right joy con and check the connection of every ribbon cable. My issue was similar to this one, and it was because my cable wasn’t fully pushed in all the way. It’s scary because you don’t want to force it in so hard it causes damage to the joy con, but you want to not make it so lose it won’t even connect. But yes, re open it, make ABSOLUTELY sure every cable is fully pushed in and closed down properly, and don’t screw the two halves together fully until you do a test making sure everything is working properly again. Hope this helped, good luck!
Ok thank you ill try that .but heres another thing just happened i connected a usb charger to the switch to see if my right joy con was charging .and when i took out the charger the right joy con was working fine .but when i took it off the switch it didnt work no more .so i tired charging it aging with the usb charger and it started working again .still think its the ribbon cables ? .but ill try doing what you said and give you and update .👍
TheBossinator the left has it built into the pcb. It is likely that this is the reason for left joycon disconnects because external antennas are more reliable than internal ones.
I'm seeing why the Joy Cons cost like 80 bucks a pair... Been really tempted to re-shell my Switch to transparent purple to mimic the atomic purple GameBoy Color with a matching PS4 controller in lieu of the Switch Pro controller. Seeing this in depth guide really helps, makes it seem a bit less daunting since I know what to expect, doesn't make me love those little ZIF connectors though. EDIT: Went through with the swap, found one that had a d-pad for the left Joy-Con so I got that version. Had to redo some of the ribbon cables a few time since I didn't secure them or they fell loose during reassembly, so like the video says check the cables. The right Joy-Con housing isn't a perfect fit (on the one I bought, I think they're all from the same molds though). The thing closes up but you can tell it doesn't close up all the way and bulges out a bit in the front, I heard other people having this issue and some filing can help with it, but I'll save that for another time as the right Joy-Con is rather annoying to put back together. All in all I would not recommend this swap for someone who isn't comfortable with working on compact electronics like the Joy-Cons and for those people to pay someone to do it or to find a service that can swap the shell housings.
I had the same issue with the right joy con. The black piece with the SL and SR buttons wouldnt fit in the groove of the top cover near the + button. Did you figure it out? Or Jerry, did you have this issue yourself? Thanks!
It's the middle plate... If you plop in the original middle I guess it's the battery holder then it will fit just fine but it will look a lot less transparent
Instruction: Better work in an air conditioned environment coz sweaty hands will not only cause smudges on clear cases but will also make it difficult to grab your tools n stuff... well i've suffered from messing up my projects so thought it worth mention..
This is my *favorite* youtuber, been watching him for along time now and i allways watch from start to finish. ( i think he would enjoy a quality clear set of tools he can work with including a heat gun )
I've replaced the Shell on the right Joy Con but only the joystick is working now. What could be the problem? I've done something wrong but can't figure it out.
Many of yall will come across a problem with the right joy con not fitting right. The problem is caused by a piece of plastic being too thick on the button side of the joycon case. It's located closest to the plus button where the rail fits in. I'm surprised Zach didn't run into the problem himself. To fix: use either a razor blade or tweezers to remove the excess plastic from the lip. It's tedious, but once you scrape off enough plastic it should fit like a glove!!
@@gamingatom8874 ive had this problem with both my clear white right joycons. I had no idea what the problem was until I saw another video of a guy explaining what it was and how to fix it. I'll link it in my next reply
Jerryrigeverything: it’s fairly simple if you know how to use a screwdriver. Also jerryrigeverything: carful with the ribbon wires and pull these wires out of the motherboard
Thank you for making this video, I just used it to change the shell on my joy-cons and switch! You explained everything perfectly and though it was time-consuming everything still works perfect on my switch!
I am so angry eith the Australian government. They changed the taxation. Now I cannot buy anything from the US Amazon site. This means I miss out on 80% of products and a lot of the ones I do want cost way more. The same kit costs me $150. I used to buy so many things on Amazon now I can't do cool projects like this all the time without breaking the bank or only doing 20% of them. For instance a Cd book holder costs $64 on Us site on the Australian site it costs me $375. Utlery ridiculous. The last place people could save money in there life has being taken away because of government greed. Sorry for the rant but imagine tomorrow if you suddenly couldn't use Amazon. The crazy things are some of the products are sent by US Amazon yet I can't buy them from Us Amazon?
mackstertube I don’t know if this would work but maybe put your phone’s or computer’s location to the U.S so that Australian laws don’t apply but I don’t know though
I am going to spend 193.42 USD on new joy cons, these shells and then joy cons charger... if I mess up... well... uhm, let's just not think about that! :D
The front housing wasn’t changed.... only the joycon and the back of the switch. The front of the device and the edges are still black. I’d like to get a shell that is true clear %100 only issue would be removing the actual screen but I’m sure it’s possible
I’m not very electronically-inclined, but I re-shelled some joycons using a different tutorial. Watching this after the fact, I really appreciate the context that you give to explain what various parts are for! It really helps a newbie like me make sense of a lot of bits and pieces I’ve never seen before. The black padding around the joystick that you faithfully moved without being sure what it was for - it’s a dust guard :)
Great video deff subscribing after seeing this I went ahead and swapped out my blue joycons and made them the atomic purple color and came out amazing everything works perfect.
How good are the shells in comparison to the original Nintendo ones? That's my biggest worry is that the transparent ones are going to feel cheaper than the originals.
The ones I bought feel even better than the originals honestly. They are the eXtremerate ones, which unfortunately don't have transparent versions, but they do have lots of colors as well as a bunch of buttons you can buy.
They’re so much better actually. The Matte plastic Nintendo used scratches way to easily and the finish wears in like 2 months. These glossy ones have a nice grip to them and since there isn’t a finish, you got nothing to worry about.
5:50 bruh i didnt have a plastic pry tool so i used a flathead screwdriver, scared the crap out of me whenever i clicked anything into place, but it ended up fine in the end. (I actually wasn't replacing a shell, but I used this vid so i could open my broken right joycon, seemed the problem was just a loose battery/antenna)
Just my personal opinion, to me the clear cases just look way too cheap. I prefer the OEM look or get a special edition OEM so you have a different console from mostly everyone...
Not as clear as your haircut.
This haves too little likes
Can you make a video about how to organize the screws when we wanna do any projects of our own?
just buy a magnetic pads/mats for screws, it already has grids printed on it to help you organize

It still works perfectly fine with only one spring surprisingly, but it’s probably best to have them both inside the system as intended, you know?
I also lost a couple screws, but luckily the clear shells I bought cane with some screws, but be careful! These screws are sometimes too long for certain holes, but all you need to do is get a basic pair of pliers with nippers on them and just carefully cut the tips off of them to get them the right size.)
Hope all of this helped!
Wow that's why my dad said I can't but this because I would end up messing something up
Zorra Smith It’s not too hard as long as you’re careful. Just set aside the right amount of time and keep track of things.
8:20 Amiibo reader?
Yes! NFC.
Indeed it is the NFC reader.
MHBGT NFC reader, same found on cellphones and other things including Wii U & New Nintendo 3DS!
I don't think it is an amibo reader because it is not connected to anything
Roy Foerster hOLY SHIT XD
It was so satisfying to watch this video.

In future: clear crystal fully functional Zack.
Waiting for that video
How do you keep your screw organized?
i use an empty ice cube tray.
Waqas Qureshi you can make simple drawings of the parts an put the screws in the exact same point where you removed them, is the best option
Waqas Qureshi - Thats what she said.
if you have a printer take a photo then print it out on paper. Just punch the screws thru the print out so that you will know where you removed theme.
Louie Sarmiento yep that's better, but only if you have access to a printer
Oh I was wondering what happened to Mr. Clean
He was fired for being very bald.
Wheezing rn
BAHAHAHA
I think the thing in the R joycon that you said is probably a antenna, is a NFC scanner for amiibo
It is an antenna, my right joycon will not sync to the switch without it
Pixelman546 then why doesn’t the left have one. Only the right joycon has a nfc scanner
TheBossinator the left has it built into the pcb. It is likely that this is the reason for left joycon disconnects because external antennas are more reliable than internal ones.
It is the amiibo reader!
Whatever you say, take yours apart and try it out! I know that mine is an antenna, maybe yours is special and reads amiibos instead! You never know.
8:20 im pretty sure that's the NFC reader for Amiibos.
Ya
Hopefully he knows this now.

EDIT:
Went through with the swap, found one that had a d-pad for the left Joy-Con so I got that version.
Thanks!
Henrique Duarte I had it too. I took it apart and redid it to no avail. Have no idea what the issue is. All I can guess is it’s the mold itself.
It's the middle plate... If you plop in the original middle I guess it's the battery holder then it will fit just fine but it will look a lot less transparent
First I lost a spring then broke a locking mechanism for the one of the ribbons. It was a long and aggravating path just to spend 70 bucks lol
If switch made a limited clear switch for halloween and named it “Ghost Switch” that would be really cool

well i've suffered from messing up my projects so thought it worth mention..

yep i did today!
Should have waited a bit cuz I think Nintendo will release a new model soon probably better quality than the previous
@@overlordiiv6463 Yeah but it'll definitely be pricier...
You are the one guy saying this. No one else had this problem. How do we know that scraping away at that bit won`t break it?
@@gamingatom8874 ive had this problem with both my clear white right joycons. I had no idea what the problem was until I saw another video of a guy explaining what it was and how to fix it. I'll link it in my next reply

Did you do it? If so, how did it go?

Me:PLEASE DON'T BREAK IT
Jerryrigeverything: it’s fairly simple if you know how to use a screwdriver.

The antenna on the right joycon is for the Amiibo NFC functionality!
Thank you for making this video, I just used it to change the shell on my joy-cons and switch! You explained everything perfectly and though it was time-consuming everything still works perfect on my switch!
I just got a feeling this will get scratched very easily or become yellowish overtime :/
Try and search for a parcel forwarding service.
mackstertube I don’t know if this would work but maybe put your phone’s or computer’s location to the U.S so that Australian laws don’t apply but I don’t know though

Did you get it to work?
The front housing wasn’t changed.... only the joycon and the back of the switch. The front of the device and the edges are still black. I’d like to get a shell that is true clear %100 only issue would be removing the actual screen but I’m sure it’s possible

When organizing the screws, are there certain ones that are similar or are they all individually different? Asking for a friend
While they might be the same, It is best to keep track of which one goes exactly where.
Different. Keep them organized.
Help!!! Did mine and now the right joy con will not charge. Instantly dies when removed from console and will not light up.
If i didnt want to do this my self cause i dont trust my self, do you know a place that would do it for me?

Gamesta 4Life my right joy con don't work :(
Dop3NEz u probably dintd correctly plug in the ribbon cables

Nice work but watching the deconstruction gave me anxiety lol
I’m not very electronically-inclined, but I re-shelled some joycons using a different tutorial. Watching this after the fact, I really appreciate the context that you give to explain what various parts are for! It really helps a newbie like me make sense of a lot of bits and pieces I’ve never seen before.
The black padding around the joystick that you faithfully moved without being sure what it was for - it’s a dust guard :)
Me: has the animal crossing switch and couldn’t do it if I tried.
Also me: watches this and pays attention of how to do this.
They are made from the same form of plastic and are said to be equal, thougb be aware that the switch of the joycons will void you warranty
Tell me if I helped
Dude you could have punctured it...
Just my personal opinion, to me the clear cases just look way too cheap. I prefer the OEM look or get a special edition OEM so you have a different console from mostly everyone...
