This reminds me of the awkward conversation you have when you run into somebody that you haven't seen since high school, and you're interested enough to be excited for like .5 seconds until you realize that now you're locked in and you have nothing to really talk about, or be excited about, or genuinely want to share, because you barely even spoke to each other back then. So you fumble around making polite conversation and vague statements, eventually mentioning how "someday soon" you really need to get together for coffee to spend even more time pretending like you have something to talk about, but don't even bother to exchange contact information and leave the situation feeling like you just survived a near death experience.
That's life for me.

💯 Yes! Tobias Funke was a genius character in an already exceptional show... and it was all David's improv skill; he completely brought that character to life. Such an underrated show while it was being broadcast; it took a few years for people to digest it and realize that it was basically the most brilliant sitcom of all time.

These kinds of interviews are ALWAYS rehearsed, it's a widely known fact.

You might be thinking of the fact that the guests DO get some heads-up about what the host is going to ask, but typically the celebrity has this conversation with members of the staff, not the host himself, but the actual interview is improvised around a pre-planned idea. The rehearsals for the shows are typically just the monologue, other segments (like Meanwhile, in the case of the Late Show) and any musical performances. Interviews guests typically don't come to rehearsal unless they're going to be in a sketch.
