...And then in the very first episode he turns up as a pirate wearing a puffy shirt, a bandana and a moustache :)
Haha! Yep.
ah yes, thank you 100% legitimate man
Cameron Harper LMFAO
Tobias ..you blowhard
Very astute!
Glad to see Tobias finally achieved his dream of becoming an actor.
Yeah, the Analrepist wasn’t really it for me.
AN ACTOR!!!

He's too humble. Tobias is the character I have the most trouble possibly envisioning being pulled off by anyone else. It's one of those totally unique synergies of the perfect actor for a given role.
right?! i loved hearing from the actual human how tobias was made!
It's like Dwight from the office. I can't see anyone other than Rainn in the role
@@matiasaguilar2500 ahahhaha thats so accurate
Yes!! I don't feel the same about Buster or Gob.
I would say it's true for everyone in the main ensemble.
The best part is, in the pilot, Tobias wears his mustache, a puffy pirate shirt and a hat.
lol you're right!
Yep... just like the top comment posted 3 years before this one says.
@@FrankHarrison12 aww you okay, little sourpuss? 🥺

AD is one of the best cast shows I've ever seen.
THE best, for sure. I really miss Veep too.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is just as well cast 😁

@@TDR85 is that supposed to be 100% or 0% lol?

I'm glad he knew that part wasn't for him. The show was well casted and I feel like every person was perfect for their part, not many shows you can say that about, and I'm glad he fought for his character. It showed he really cared, and knowing it's David cross, it's not really a surprise.
That producer must've had a bad boyfriend in the 80s she didn't want to be reminded of.
I love your username.
I have to say, for rules of comedy... those are AWFULLY specific. There’s a story behind each one.
It's so weird hearing him talking like a straight man
He's was always straight, he just happened to be a little buy-curious
In the characters mind he's more straight than anyone
I guess you never watched Mr. Show? I envy you. You have a literal mountain of comedy gold that you have yet to see. Watch Mr. Show and thank me later.
@@daveidmarx8296 Where can I watch Mr. Show?
@@jay-white Many full episodes are on RUclips.
Tobias without his moustache would be like Ned Flanders without his.
I don't think he'd make a bad gob but thank god he got the tobias part :D
He would make a terrible Gob, that part was meant for one man only just as Tobias was
Always beware when someone who isn't a comedian or a comedy writer or actor says "my three rules of comedy."
Thinking about it, he's the only guy I can imagine saying "ILLUSIONS Michael" with enough gumption
Not to mention "BEES?!!!"
I cannot imagine David cross playing Gob, let alone will arnett not playing him
You already know that Gale got her heart broken by a mustache man who wears loose shirts and hats
He could’ve been Buster... not Gob, though...
Nope, all the castings were perfect.
no way he could be buster
Naw, like he said, when you read the script you just know. All of them were cast perfectly.
Gob is hard to pull off. He should be good looking and be ridiculously funny at the same time
@@Raynnman well by your definition gob is only one of those things anyway. He’s funny
David Cross never ages does he?
He's actually 30 weeks younger in this video than he was 5 years ago
***** Is it bad that I'm still struggling to work out what you mean?
David D It blue my mind.
That wasn't a typo either! As for the comment, it hurts to think about it. I just think it means he was 30 weeks younger in this video than he was 30 weeks before 5 years ago from when this video was posted. Meaning he hasn't aged and looks the same. Come to think of it, I doubt what I said makes any logical sense. I'm not clever enough to figure it out. Maybe Absolute Radio were paying homage to the irreverent style humour of the show?
Billy Roadhouse Potato Elephant Um, yes he does age. He looks a hell of a lot older here than he did on Mr. Show. His facial hair is getting greyer and greyer all the time, his bottom teeth have become misaligned (a common sign of aging if you pay attention). Maybe because he's always been bald, you think he doesn't age, but if you look at everything else, he's aged as much as anyone has in the last 20 years since Mr. Show.
+Billy Roadhouse Potato Elephant Black don't crack
So glad he won the Moustache war!
It's not just that he nailed the part, he really puts a lot of subtle gestures, voice changes and so much more making it hilarious. Those comedy "rules" they gave to him are beyond ridiculous, the mustache was perfect
Parasoling into the coffee table
We shan't be telling your mother about this
The scenes where Tobias blues himself wouldn't be half as funny without the moustache.
One of the best characters ever made.
The radio guy looks like he didn't take a shower this year
No puffy shirts

His brilliant & hilarious performance made up hefty part of the show's humor.
...And I'm a fan of the whole cast.
Love, love, love David Cross. One of the greats.
One of my favorite characters.
Love that guy.
He's so great in this. It's a great show but Tobias is just brilliant.
What a fantastic piece of work
His description of Tobias makes so much sense!
Those rules are obviously stupid, but I think the spirit behind them is to make the performer as expressive as possible - not hiding the face or the body.
The thing is this isn't a straight comedy type of show like Curb, which isn't itself even entirely that
The best analrapist
tobias funke would be great friends with todd margaret
I can imagine him walking up to gale and saying “I mustache you why facial hair is such a big deal”
His voice acting in Halo series is still my favorite work from him hahah.
He remembers it distinctly then proceeds to be clueless
They originally wanted Bob Odenkirk as Walter White in Breaking Bad. True story.
They originally had Terry Crews in mind to play Tobias. The clue is in the name.
It's just a fallacccccccy!
If everyone in friends had moustaches and puffy shirts I might watch an episode
It's mind boggling to me that people can be this arbitrary and be successful when so much money is on the line. It's not like they wanted him to shave because his face would look better for lighting purposes. It's not like it was a character question - if anything the moustache enhances Cross's depiction of Tobias in a number of ways. It was just because this set-in-her-ways producer just categorically didn't like facial hair in comedy, and was too powerful to be questioned about it.
I need to rewatch this show 😂
"Even if it means me taking a chubby I will suck it up!"
That's a pretty good description
lol gales rules for comedy.
That show was legendary like sienfeld...too bad it only had 3 seasons..I don’t count those Netflix seasons
Season 4 had it's moments ("The Gothic Arsehole??" "That's what I said."), but Season 5 was a trainwreck.
This guy is a genius comedy actor
Zach Galifianakis, Billy connolly, bill bailey - all facial hair all so funny. Facial hair on or off makes no difference its about ability and talent.
A beard just isn't Tobias. It has to be the stache.
I feel like if you can at least grow facial hair you're more likely to be funny tbh. Most women comics are terrible
DON'T LYNCH ME...but similar to my Uncle SamIAm I relented and tried AD first time tonight..an it's DELICIOUS. Best way this here greenhorn describe it: Arrested Development = Succession written by Larry David.
Wow, I never thought of it before, but maybe that's what initially threw me about Tobias.
When I saw the AD pilot last year for the first time, something seemed off about Tobias' character to me, like he didn't belong on screen. When I saw him in his very first scene, I instantly disliked him (came to love him, but... first impressions). Maybe my reaction was being confused by the moustache, because you don't ever see it on comedy shows.
It may have (also) been the puffy shirt and/or bandanna that you found offputting.
Andrew Rivera He didn't have those in his first scene. I'd already had my impression of him when he was being introduced. It's now been almost two years, but I recall disliking him from the moment his photo was revealed and he was mentioned to be Linday's husband.
I'm a big psychology guy, so I'm really interested in the possibility of psychological cues (e.g., mustaches) immediately colouring perceptions of people.
When seeing him donning a rugged mustache I instantly knew this was going to be the man of my dreams.
James Gardner What about Nick Offerman?
Andrew Rivera how did you know about the banana in my pants?
Rules are made to be broken
yeah yeah yeah ( no idea)
He reminds me alot of Vsauce Michael.
Because he's bald and wears glasses? Great imagination there, buddy.
Tobias is good but this guy's most iconic role is the wheelchair guy who blew himself in scary movie 2
Something about money, power, and people telling them their shit doesn't stink goes to the average person's head and that's how you get executives who think they know comedy better than actual comedians and you end up having to fight some idiot over a mustache.
Tobias would deny being an "in and out character". Lindsay, how often do we have to have this conv...
In glad tobias finally became an actor.😂
Haha, I like this guy!
David could play Alan Ginsberg if they do another movie on The Beats.
TV executives, like the manager at my work, are useless.
Rules were meant to be broken
Mr. Show
We know about Nellie.
The rules are about power not the rules. They're about the power of the person issuing the edicts, their insecurities, which are grounded (because none of them deserve their positions of power), and their BS in general.
Anyone who has three rules for comedy doesn't know comedy.
Anybody who has three complete and absolute rules for anything creative doesn't have any idea what creativity is.
He reminds me so much of Allen Ginsberg in this video
I can’t imagine Tobias without a bushy over his mouth!
I thought he just liked Jean shorts
It sounds like there was a man inside him
Just some exec on a power trip who thinks they're the ones creating the show rather than authorising the cheques. You get them in any big company.
the rules ahahahhahdahhahaha
I guess that executive never saw the puffy shirt episode from Seinfeld 😂
The never nude...lololololololololol.
I can’t believe the character who plays Tobias is actually white!
I’d purposely violate all 3 rules :
Puffy shirt w/ a nice thick mustache (maybe w/ some milk or crumbs on it) wearing a hat that read HAT 🧢 across it, in all caps.
She’d fucking hate me
Ofc after I wrote my comment I see someone else made a very similar comment already. Herp ):
I just cant help but imagine how much more funny he could have been if he just didnt have facial hair. oh well!
Excuuuuuuuuse me
3 rules of comedy coming from someone who isn’t a comedian. I hope she doesn’t work in that industry anymore
i suppose i understand her point. each physical trait can be used to distract from the character. the puffy shirt is synonymous with a romantic hero, Facial hair is often synonymous with villains/mystery, hats are gimmicky to an extent, but there aren’t 10 commandments to comedy that you need to employ like this show taught us
Holy shit this interviewer needs to take those giant british marbles of of his unfortunate face......
It’s just a fallacy
David is far left. I can’t stand him. But David Cross and Will Arnett made that show.
The mustache thing makes sense, you don’t want anything obscuring the face of a comedian. Tobias funke works but that’s an exception
No. It´s not the part of the skin under the facial hair that creates comedy you know, there is more to it...
Dumbest comment ever

And you try to tell me that women in power don't act the exact same as men ....
Wait, so he actually is Black?

That was the point.
It was the best show
It was a wee bit looney.

There are so many poorly chosen words in these sentences
Are you just looking or are you going to buy something this time?

David Cross rules. Some comics come off as fake and then there are ones like David who you know wouldn't sell out or put you down unless you really deserved it.

@@ownpetard8379 The joke fleu right over your noggin.
@@dislike__button I won't take the L. I said "but forgiven" for the allusion to the Blue Man Group theme, And note that "Blue" was never used in the explosion sense in the show (I contend, I won't research it.) In any case, the main definitions were 1. the color, and b. sadness.
A little too quick to fly off the handle.
It's so great that he finally got the part he was hoping for, in the end.
He did such a great job as Tobias. Couldn’t imagine him as Gob.
One of the best comedic performances of the 2000s.
I have to say Tobias Funke, is my favorite character on AD. My favorite! He makes me laugh so hard. I would love to see more of this character, say in a fathers role. Funny Man.
You should see Todd Margaret.
He's definitely my favourite analrapist. 🤣

that Gail person sounds like the most hilarious person nobody has ever heard of. what a comic genius waiting to be discovered.
When he gets the hair transplant and rolled down the ramp on the wheel chair is still the funniest tv moment for me
The Mary Poppins off the landing.
We shan't be telling your mother about this.
I can't believe that producer or whoever she was had "rules" for men in comedy, and that one of those rules was no facial hair. Someone like that needs a psych assessment. And also needs to not be in charge of humor.
Right? They would have bounced Ron Swanson as well....
So damn arbitrary too.
Overstepping one's area of expertise is a requirement for being a C-level.
him, chappelle and bill burr are my favorite comedians
Gail? That's gotta be Gail Berman, who was not just a "producer" but actually president of entertainment at Fox those years. Having won the moustache war against that complete moron is a huge victory because she was NOT any kind of rational person - she is the one who attempted to wreck Futurama, Firefly AND Arrested Development, one of which she successfully did murder and tried to butter it over with sweet words afterwards.
Seriously, signing a contract with Fox during her reign was a death sentence for your project unless it was immediately profitable (which character driven stuff rarely is). AD was lucky to even get to be aired in order...
Weird to think that some random asshole you never heard of had so much influence over what we get to see.
David Cross stole every scene he was in. Hell, Tobias might be my favorite character in the whole series
He voiced Minion on Megamind. He was exceptional in that role.
Him?
Sounds like TV executives are HOA presidents at heart.
