This season was great! Not because the Blue Devils lost, but because this season was incredibly historical in many ways. BAC got the highest score in their history, the Bluecoats won captions alongside the championship, Phantom beat Crown (holy moly that spread between those two was close), the Battalion made it to semis for the first time in history (and on their 10th anniversary no less), Madison Scouts made it to finals since 2017, and Blue Devils got 3rd place for the first time since 2006. If that’s not a historical season, then I don’t know what is quite frankly!

I agree. I was not a Bluecoats fan until 2014. TILT changed everything! The intro alone was enough for any fan of DCI and/or seasoned musician to say..."wait------what was that? I need to hear that again". I'm referring to the sampled voice of the announcer slowing down and then speeding up ( ending with the powerful announcement "THE BLUECOATS"). As a Cadet alum, I'll mention one of the big things behind-the-scenes of the top drum corps. Almost all of our staff - and most importantly members went to various different corps, which only helped improve the talent pool for other corps going into this season. Cadets folding might not have been great, but the lasting impacts of former members across multiple ensembles is clearly evident within the activity, and especially in the top 12 this season.
@@mikemurray3905 18 members went to Carolina Crown, 7 people (including 2 staff members) went to SCV, 2 members went to Bluecoats (and most of the Cadets visual staff taught there this summer too - which might have contributed to them winning visual) and one person went to BD. Most to the brass vets went to Carolina Crown, so many in fact that members were able to play Cadillac of the Skies with every brass voice. ( ruclips.net/video/u5ID58Yyleg/видео.html ) It was a touching moment to see during spring training, and as an alum it made me very proud that our history was looked upon with pride and passion. I (!!) (HONestly) don't feel like the Blue Devils take risks in the ways that other corps do, and I'm happy to see it rewarded. When consistency is more valuable than risk-taking, we stifle creativity
This was a crazy season. I look forward to whatever else you'll cover this season, especially since I think I caught a glimpse of you filming something while I was eating during the finals intermission (sorry if I was staring lol).
Bloo's sound design this season and last season have been incredible. Like actually insane. Also a huge fan of what Phantom's been doing especially with the little stuff in the mellos like you pointed out. also kinda random but man that SCV 18 closer gets me going everytime, lol
Their soundscapes since 22 have been so unique. I know some people take issue with the increased prevalence of electronics and amplification, and I’m not telling those people they’re wrong, but you *MUST* admit that Bloo are by far the best at integrating it. Like Everett said, they are willing to take risks and explore things that other corps are not and you could really define their modern era as being the risk takers. It’s what makes them who they are.
I’m very much a layperson. I’m 61, and I was really into Drum and Bugle Corps when I was in high school and college, but everything has so DRASTICALLY changed since then. Generally, now, the frenetic pace of the shows, the props, the mind boggling flashes of neon colors, the electronics, etc… drive my ADD (never had the “H”) into a frenzy. They just overwhelm me.😂 But, what is still the same is the musicality, the athleticism, the grace, the skill and the determination and drive of these young people. They completely bowl me over every time. My idea of an aesthetically beautiful show would be Santa Clara’s “Phantom” from 1989. However, I wanted to tell you that I found the Blue Devil’s show this year very enjoyable. I was watching it on our kitchen’s computer, and my husband came in to the room and asked why I was laughing. I had become a bit teary eyed… and I told him that I couldn’t explain it, but that I found that show both awe inspiring and charming. Oh, I know none of this makes a bit a difference to you, and that’s okay, but Romantics gets the”Old Lady Vote” for best in show. They did an absolutely fantastic job, and…so do you.❤

Bluecoats hands down threw it down this year. Conceptually, that show had so many meanings and the individual watching it can interpret it in many ways. This season was incredible I can't wait for next year!
You are spot on with your review. I'm hoping that BD's third place finish, and Crown's 5th will push both from their safety zone. Time to change things up and take some risks.
If taking risks means having totally forgettable shows like Boston and Bloo, then no thanks. Don't get me wrong, those two corps were ridiculously good, but Devils give us art.
@@builderphil13 I'm not expecting either BD or Crown to produce a Bloo style show. I would like to see both be less predictable, but still recognizable. Just imagine BD going back to their jazz roots, but something modern. It would be epic.
It *IS* rigged!!! It's rigged to award the gold medal to the cleanest group with the best content and achievement! I can't believe I blew it wide open just like that! All jokes aside, this season was incredible. For me, this year had the most shows I've really enjoyed ever since 2016, and was definitely a super competitive season. In Houston there was low frequency feedback in the PA muddying up the low end of the Blue Devils even at times drowning out the tubas. Blue Coats were on another level.. That show was Awesome. The Flag Feature Solo was a true !!!

I have to compliment how well edited this video is. The way you used the J and L cuts especially, just brings you into the whole corps vibe. I’m too new here to know if you or someone else edits your videos, but whoever does, outstanding job!
Watched DCI for 42 years (since elementary school) The Blue Devils is always clean day 1 and is not going to change. The organization is going to change its style and the uniform - it always does after not being 1st or 2nd. I predicted the Bluecoats winning. Boston Crusaders was fantastic. You know Drum Corps are going change again because of the Bluecoats. You are going to see drill, uniform, and style changes in 2025 because of the Bluecoats. The Bluecoats changed DCI after the 2016 win when everybody started ditching the traditional military uniform. Congratulations to the Bluecoats for the win and setting trends.

Phantom Rocked. Crown's Wall-E had me in tears. Crusaders were mindblowing. Bluecoats brass peeled my skin off... But BD just didn't hit for me at all. I didn't "Get it" and it didn't have those moments for me.
I have to agree with you. But I had numerous moments with BD this year. But I saw the show live many times. It grows on you. Boston however had me utterly glued the entire time. Incredible fun and difficult show with outstanding visual. I'm glad they were the ones to put BD in 3rd. However, BD will be back with a vengeance next year. And Bluecoats will be continuing with their "soundscape" adventures. Next year will be the most unpredictable in many years. Imo. That's if our government doesn't get the country involved in WW3.
If anything, I been seen a lot of attacks on BD how they sucked this year. If a corps scoring 97 and getting 3rd sucks, then I guess every corps sucks. Though I do agree with your video. Bluecoats and Boston had a very good year and they well deserved their placements
Will you all be doing reactions vids to the finals run for the top 5 corps? It’d be dope to see you all’s detailed takes on all the top shows from the final like you all usually do!
But boring if you back to the year they won. Simplicity and execution won for them with E=Mc2 then the following year or two afterwards they had another show that was also incredible and innovative I thought they weee robbed that year for sure I think they place 2nd.
Oh yeah and I just checked I do remember the place in second again at least once more but they play second in 09 and 2012 and I think they should’ve won both of those years but the politics of such would not have it that way. In fact, I remember now 2012 was a better show. I went and watched them in Atlanta Blown away, but they didn’t win that year the following year which I think was just the judges way of making up for what they should’ve done in 2012.
@@dmajorx No one denies that. 2013 and 14 were very great for them. But that doesn't keep me from enjoying their current work. I saw the show three times from the 50, and their sound and expressiveness was off the charts. Boring isn't a word that comes to mind.
As much as I love the Blue Devils. I have to give it to the Bluecoats. They were absolutely incredible. I think this easily tops their 2016 show. Change is Everything certainly is a show that every drum corps marcher or fan will remember forever. Congrats to the Bluecoats on the well deserved victory. As for the Blue Devils, I absolutely loved their show this season. I don't think it was quite as good as The Cutouts from last year, but it was still a freaking amazing show. The Blue Devils at least continue their top 5 streak, so there is at least that positive to look forward to. Can't wait to see what they'll do next season
Listening to the bluecoats at their preview show in June was truly insane. Everyone in the crowd could really tell something special was happening. Saw them again at Allentown and seeing literal tears being shed during the ballad and closer. I think it’s one of the best examples of modern drum corps designs out there and will live in history with greats like BD 17 and 14, crown 13, cadets 2011 and early 2000’s cavies.
To me it's a sequel show to Down Side Up in a lot of ways, which has always been my benchmark for well executed "hyper-modern" show design. There are so many parallels between those 2 shows
Babylon was a Down Side Up sequel to me. Change is Everything feels more like a Kinetic Noise or Jagged Line baby to me, but crystallized into a much cleaner design & product.
I feel like the Blue Devils do two things very well: complexity/density, and the ability to rapidly change between styles. Their shows always have SO MUCH happening, which makes them fun to watch again and again, which I especially notice in their color guard. You can always catch something new with each viewing, and obviously a dense show tends to have higher content demands which lead to high scores. The Blue Devils also have this uncanny ability to seamlessly switch between different moods, which creates such a beautiful and revelatory feeling in me when I watch them. The shift in tone from the end of their mid-show drum break to the ballad is simply breathtaking. The sudden shift from the merry-go-round lightness to the harsh trombone growling was another moment that sticks out to me. I do think that their show pushed a little bit too far into the complexity, which made moments less readable for an audience or the judges. I feel like Phantom's and Boston's execution of simpler ideas was more accessible to most. Even the Bluecoats, whose show was ABOUT increasing complexity and entropy, was still so clean and readable throughout. At every moment, I feel like I was experiencing exactly what the designers wanted me to because of how much clarity there was in the program. While the past few years have been dominated competitively by an increasing complexity in show design, I feel like the current design trend is going to switch to one of more readable and focused ideas. One trend I notice often that I'm very excited to see is that, once someone has introduced something "new" to the table, the Blue Devils ALWAYS take those ideas and execute them to the highest extent the year after. I really hope we see a very simple and readable idea done by the Devils, something more akin to a Metamorph or a Felliniesque, next year, because I KNOW they will absolutely innovate and knock it out of the park.
this is very insightful and I gotta agree with you, I think I tend to appreciate phantom and other corps with simpler shows but bd always has so much complexity that it sometimes gets overwhelming
Boston Crusaders was my favourite show all season but Blue Coats just kept improving. Their final run was incredible and they definitely deserved to win in my opinion. I found it interesting that the top two achieved success without elaborate props. I never could click with the Blue Devils show this year; it felt as though they were trying to be too clever with the boxes and capes and lost a bit of the emotional quality they usually bring. You’ve done a great job all season and well done to the Blue Knights. 👍🏻
No elaborate props? What do you call a hundred over sized hulahoops and two dozen red boxes continually moving around the field. The literal definition of elaborate.
@@builderphil13 in my eyes "elaborate" is more in the sense of the props themselves. like Crown's massive prop, or the types of props the bluecoats have had with previous years (all the flowery stuff last year, that huge one in 2022). while there were a lot of props on the field, they were very simple props that didn't "steal the show" per se.
Hey Everett, I think that something that has to do with Bluecoats winning is their color scheme in uniforms. The last time the Bluecoats won, they corps proper had white uniforms and the guard had yellow uniforms. This year, they had the same exact color scheme so it could be that these specific colors just work. I think I may be onto something. With that being said, I am also a Blue Devils lover at heart but also recognize when other groups are better. For examaple, in '23, Blue Devils was the best overall because they won but that wasn't my favorite show. Last year, my favortie show was Crown. Most of get bored of seeing one group win but we just have to appreciate what the members across the activity are doing for two and a half months. They put in 12 hour days just for us to critize for one thing that we shouldn't. We sometimes take this activity for granted. With that said, Bluecoats deserved to win but I find it funny that the color scheme was the same as 2016. LOL
The Blue Devils looked just some kids having fun at retreat, which perhaps they always were. Good sports about not winning though. It was actually my fav Devs show in a number of years, for whatever reason.
Loved the competitiveness of this season, I feel like bds strength, like you said, lies in their visual, their lower half responsibilities. And the capes hid that a bit too much. And yeah the music just didn’t pop like some years, just not quite the right combo this year. Coats had an interesting show, a uni that showcased their movements very well, and easily the most memorable music of the night. And we can’t understate the importance of neither corps clutching the Sanford away from a victorious Paul Rennick return with vanguard. Really big moment for them to still clutch that after the time off. Super fun season from a viewers perspective so I can only imagine marching it was special for the members as well
Liked the videos just wish you would’ve commented on all 12 of the finalists corpses is all. Like Vanguards return and how cool Troopers show was, just saying
Don't you know top 4 are the only corps that exist. 🤣 It must be because he is a Blue devil at heart only winning matters instead of getting the crowd going!🙃 Kidding....sort of..... 🤣
At first I didn't like the Bluecoats show, because I wanted to see more of a visual change. I like when they added the horn and drum line having the yellow tops like the guard. I wish the guard could have had the red and white bottoms like the horn and drumline. Boston Cru Glitch show grew on me over each show.
The first thing I thought when I saw devs this year was that visual analysis was going to suffer because of how few opportunities they had to demonstrate form control in a macro level. Seeing them live, I thought the same thing about proficiency. The uniforms were cool but made it impossible to demonstrate control over their lower body movement because of the fabric.
The Blue Devils visually was a mess this year. Very clumpy. They will need to step up their drill game next year. They were left in the dust drill wise.
ScoJo's salary was too much this year........so, no title! (JK) Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Even BD. There have been periods where BD has not always been on top. Plus look at 1988. BD had it in the bag and did not get the top spot. So, rigged or not, no corps is always going to win. Great insight from a true DCI fan. Thanks for your insight and videos.
I marched Bluecoats, but my fave show this season was hands down Blue Devils. Hearing Pokemon *and* Diablo 3 music from a drum corps was just mind blowing.
Nice of you to do a follow up video regarding your 2024 predictions. I was a bit disappointed as you displayed clips and described parts of other Corps shows as "awesome", and "the coolest stuff you've ever seen" but failed to show a clip and describe any part of the Bluecoats show that was special ( but you did use the word "cool" a lot ). The 2024 DCI Champs deserved a much better review. The Bluecoats have been incorporating unique rhythms , chords and phrases ( along with the most tasteful electronic instrumentation ) in their shows for years and that needs to be recognized as "leading edge" ( IMO ). Again, IMO - The Bluecoats continue to innovate and lead the way forward like no other Corps. It's no wonder that others commented that you are biased considering you played for the Blue Devils. After watching your predictions video and this one I agree that you are biased and am sure that you might feel the same about my comments regarding the Bluecoats ( though I've never been involved with their organization ).
With the current judging system, the actual number on the sheet doesn't really matter as much as the *spreads* between the groups caption to caption. That being said, crown could've beat regiment had it not been for the perc judge on finals night. At semis, crown had a 19.2 and regiment had a 19.3. On finals night, regiment had a 19.0 and crown got a 18.45. That was the best percussion run that we had all season at crown and im not saying we should or shouldn't have beat regiment perc, but even with a spread more similar to semis night, it could've changed the result of the corps as a whole.
I would like to know your thoughts on the bottom three finalist’ shows. Those three shows ,were within one point coming down the stretch, which to me was very exciting.
Did the capes cause a visual distraction to what they were doing? I saw them in Canton and a few videos online and it just didn’t look like the BD cleanliness I’m used to.
Buddy they are actual safety blankets. They only could use them during runthroughs because of how delicate they are and how often they would tear. Nice try tho 😜
I am a big BC fan! And i am so proud of them this year, honestly every year! I can say however every corp was incredibly successful this year and should be very proud of what they were part of. I do believe this year will be remembered by many people in future years as a pivotal moment for so many corps . Great job all!!!
I thought of a silent flag feature about 12 years ago. Finally we got to HEAR the effect. Loved that from BC. Congratulations to them for a great 2024! BD was dark this year. Loved it, especially its visual design, but with two equal competitors being very bright, dark is a tough sell, so it was quite a risk. And I think BD took too long to fully develop its show through the season. That left them playing catch up to Boston. They were closing the gap at the end, but the hole they'd dug for themselves was too deep. Also, I don't think BD's percussion got its due from the judges this year. It was rigged! 😜🤣 Easy to see PR overtaking Crown. Crown's shows for the last 5 to 7 years have become somewhat standard issue, IMO. Outside the top 12, Pacific Crest surprised me. I'd have put them over Madison and Cavaliers.

I had two friends that marched Cadets for multiple years, then went to Bluecoats when they folded this year
@@mikemurray3905 18 members went to Carolina Crown, 7 people (including 2 staff members) went to SCV, 2 members went to Bluecoats (and most of the Cadets visual staff taught there this summer too - which might have contributed to them winning visual) and one person went to BD. FHNSAB!
They did an absolutely fantastic job, and…so do you.❤
I was not a Bluecoats fan until 2014. Of course the pitch bend in the closer was mind blowing....and the leap of faith into the arms of the guard at the end was awesome. On top of everything else it was a very clean show. Degree of difficulty also needs to be mentioned because the drill from TILT ( and all shows after ) contains rapid movement while playing some of the most difficult parts of the show compared to other corps who stand still while playing the challenging parts.
There’s always gonna be BD haters, people who can’t or refuse to recognize greatness when it’s there. Bloo threw it down this year and I’m excited to see how next year turns out
Bluecoats DESERVED that win.
The ENTIRE show was my favorite, their opener, ballad, and closer.
WAS REALLY COOL and unique. It was.. (perfect)❤
Blue devils didn’t have to win to win this year and hey! That’s okay, let other corps win. And honestly if they kept winning every year everyone would get bored of dci (hypothetically speaking)
Bluecoats are GOATED forever will be and this year especially

You are the best, man!! Loved the opening to this video. What a wild dci season. Glad to see you're on staff in world class. Be well, looking forward to your videos next season too
Bluecoats hands down threw it down this year.
@@builderphil13i think you misspelled tempus blue. the true most forgettable show.

All jokes aside, this season was incredible. For me, this year had the most shows I've really enjoyed ever since 2016, and was definitely a super competitive season. I got to go to my home show in Murfreesboro again (as well as watching BD rehearse the night before) and it was nothing short of incredible. I always consider it a once in a lifetime experience.....that happens every year lmfaoooo. Already can't wait for 2025!!!
Appreciate your work on this channel and with BK this summer. Fun season!
Hey, Everett! I wondered why there weren't as many videos from you guys this season, but you explained it; I didn't realize you were on tour with the Blue Knights... I'm a Southwind alumnus and charter member, and we had one of our most beloved students working on your mello line (Ian Moore) this year! So very proud of the work you guys did, and he enjoyed working with you al immensely! Looking forward to seeing your review highlights from the season! Enjoy your time in Asia!
Ian Moore is amazing! Glad to hear!
In Houston there was low frequency feedback in the PA muddying up the low end of the Blue Devils even at times drowning out the tubas. Blue Coats were on another level.. That show was Awesome. The Flag Feature Solo was a true !!!

i had tickets for Indy and couldn't go and I AM SO MAD. What an amazing weekend it turned out to be! So happy for Blucoats and BAC.
Me too. Couldn't buy tickets this year
Ironically, out of recent Bloo shows, this is probably the one that underwent the least amount of changes during the season.
Been refreshing for this video
I have to compliment how well edited this video is. The way you used the J and L cuts especially, just brings you into the whole corps vibe. I’m too new here to know if you or someone else edits your videos, but whoever does, outstanding job!
Thanks!!! All editing done by me
I’ve voted troopers as fan favorite because I love the house of the rising Sun section! I usually love the shows with the more recognizable songs.
Me too.
They needed Everett Kim, lead trumpet aficionado. His middle C’s were the best in the business!
This is so true

Agree with all your thoughts! Something to love with every single show, especially in the top 3!
If anything, I been seen a lot of attacks on BD how they sucked this year. If a corps scoring 97 and getting 3rd sucks, then I guess every corps sucks. Though I do agree with your video. Bluecoats and Boston had a very good year and they well deserved their placements
Most corps would kill to have a "suck" BD show and placement.
Once I saw the Bluecoats I knew that was a first place show. Amazing Boston passed BD
I agree. They were amazing in their first two shows in Southern CA. I was there. I was blown away when they first played at the opener.
Glitch was EPIC.
Will you all be doing reactions vids to the finals run for the top 5 corps? It’d be dope to see you all’s detailed takes on all the top shows from the final like you all usually do!
OH yes this would be fantastic!!
Crown music was fantastic. Most elegant show of the year.

Bluecoats bone soloist was NAILS all season 🔥
Congrats to BK on a fun year. As a BK alumni i still am happy to see them rock it on the field, despite not making finals. They had a fun show.
Loved this BD show!!!
Since dci doesn’t come around to where I’m from, I wait until the end of the season to watch videos of the shows to see them at their best
Very well said!
this is very insightful and I gotta agree with you, I think I tend to appreciate phantom and other corps with simpler shows but bd always has so much complexity that it sometimes gets overwhelming
The Blue Devils were so dark and boring. Drab all over the field.

I saw you in the suites at finals! I was too nervous to say hi 😬
LOL
Can we get a Pt 2 about the bottom 6??
The Blue Devils looked just some kids having fun at retreat, which perhaps they always were. Good sports about not winning though. It was actually my fav Devs show in a number of years, for whatever reason.
Bro, Devils going seventeen years on placing 1st or 2nd is insane. yea yea, covid years included

I’m a huge BD honk, and 90’s Cadets Alum, devils were out designed…out classed. Bluecoats out BD’d BD. Devs just didn’t have “IT”
I haven't even seen a full performance of the blue devils yet and I don't know why its still fine
The fatigue is real
At first I didn't like the Bluecoats show, because I wanted to see more of a visual change. I like when they added the horn and drum line having the yellow tops like the guard. I wish the guard could have had the red and white bottoms like the horn and drumline. Boston Cru Glitch show grew on me over each show.
Reactions with the goated trio please.
My biggest flex is that Everett Kim walked past me in the lot at Drums along the Columbia in Seattle (i was watching the Gems warm up)
The first thing I thought when I saw devs this year was that visual analysis was going to suffer because of how few opportunities they had to demonstrate form control in a macro level.
You should talk about All-Age!!
Let’s be honest though….the real winner was Nicholas Britell’s pockets for writing “Agape”. DCI really milked that piece this year.

Except you can't hear any of the awesome volume past the 35 30 line.

Sorry this didn’t meet your standards big dawg 😢
Will we get funliner reacts videos to the shows this year?
I predicted 3rd. BUT, this is my favorite musical book since 2000. The boxes of curiosities and the horses was too much clutter.

Honestly that intro was literally ironic considering that’s how everyone is when BD Win
Bro they win every year it doesn’t hurt for them to lose once
I honestly thought the crowd would will Phantom into 3rd the way they willed them to 1st in 2008
I thought of a silent flag feature about 12 years ago.
Easy to see PR overtaking Crown. Crown's shows for the last 5 to 7 years have become somewhat standard issue, IMO.
Outside the top 12, Pacific Crest surprised me. I'd have put them over Madison and Cavaliers.
I love this channel, but they just talk about blue devils, Bluecoats and crown.
