Gm7b5/C (equivalent to C11b9) is actually an incredibly beatiful dominant chord pulling to F major. it's basically a minor plagal cadence with V in the bass, and some extensions. So that's definitely not what he played

Go up a 5th from your current key - or down a fourth (not quite half an octave either way) - and you can get an almost invisible key change. Jazz does this thing where it rapidly goes from one key to another, using the keys along the way on the circle of fifths as stepping stones. Of course, you can always not use the circle for other fun effects. But it's a neat compositional tool
