  • From wayyyy back when....taped with the trusty old VCR on a rainy night with lots of lightning strikes in Dallas(hence the occasional glitch in the broadcast) in '93, please forgive the much less than perfect quality, its as good as i can make it.

As a Tour Guide @ Globe Life Field, who wasn’t yet here in Texas back in the days the Rangers played in their 1st home, Arlington Stadium, this is such a jewel for me to learn more of the history and events that took place in that 1st ballpark. Thank you so much for posting and I look forward to sharing some of the moments talked about in this segment with new Rangers fans as they come into the Rangers’ current home.

Thanks for posting this. I went to my first MLB game at Arlington Stadium, I'm not sure when, probably 1989 or maybe 1990. I know the last game I attended at Arlington Stadium was on my 12th birthday, August 28, 1993. I almost got a foul ball from Juan Gonzalez at that game.

I was born in 1972. Same year the Rangers came to Texas. I literally grew up with the Rangers. So many memories, Nolan, Charlie, Pudge, Juan Gone, Beuchele, Pete O’brien, Ruben, it just goes on and on. Not to mention channel 5 news with Scott Murray on sports, Scott Chesner’s weather reports. Harold Taft passed away just a couple of years earlier. Jane McGarry and Mike Snyder doing the news, wow, seems like yesterday.

My dad owned a restaurant called Khaki's Fresh Food off Little Road in Arlington. One of my earliest memories was one night after work, he took me to this ballpark and parked in the parking lot and proceeded to tell me stories about it and The Rangers. Told me the next day it would be demolished. Miss you pops and thanks for the memories.

I used to go to khakis every week with my dad. Spent many a night playing street fighter and eating potato nachos there. My dad let me choose the name of the order because they called it out over the PA so I always chose something goofy. I miss the hell out of that place! Sorry to hear about your pops, i had many great memories with my own father there and the ballpark.

And last yr, I learned you can listen to Ranger games if you're in South Arkansas.
And after looking just now, you can listen to them in parts of western AR and even LR.

Love it! Took me back that's for sure, even with the technicalities of the video quality. Also like that you included the commercials in it as well..........and last but not least, who would have remembered that a severe thunderstorm was going through the Dallas area at the time it aired. Thanks for posting this!

This was originally a farm league stadium I'm assuming. I lived in Dallas for a few years ('82-84') and was able to take in a few games. I love all baseball stadiums, because to me, they all have a personality. This one certainly did-I love that it was expanded from it's original size, and they still used it.

The ballpark in Arlington was the best stadium in baseball. I say this as an Astros fan who visited a few times to watch my friend pitch against the Rangers. It's a shame they replaced it with a giant ugly warehouse just like we have in Houston. I say this as a licensed architect. Baseball is not meant to be played in a warehouse, I don't care how hot it gets (I say this as a super pale dude who played amateur summer baseball in Houston). The interesting thing is in 2023 games are being played like 30 minutes faster so I bet those hot summer games wouldn't be nearly as bad for fans now.

I would love to see more old footage from the first few years of the Rangers existence. I was 11 years old when the Senators became the Rangers and would listen to the games on WBAP. I can still hear Dick Risenhoover and Bill Merrill calling the games, but very few games were televised and none of the home games were on TV. Tom Grieve was my favorite position player and Steve Foucault was my favorite pitcher. He looked a lot like Fred Flintstone...LOL. And Tom was really a nice guy to we kids who'd bother the players for autographs. I'm glad he's the voice of the Rangers on TV nowadays but I have a feeling he'd have made a good manager too. I'd also love to see old footage of Rangers like Joe Lovitto, Rich Billings, Jim Panther and Don Stanhouse. Ah, the '70s. I sure do miss them.

I remember Bob Short raped the city of Washington. They still had attendance problems in year one so bad, that he wanted to move back to DC but was binded to a lease he signed when he moved. They only broke 1 million at the game after he sold the team. If you want to hear the DC viewpoint read "Kiss It Goodbye by Shelby Whitefield"

Could have been a really good piece but Scott Murray seemed know nothing about the Rangers and what the history was behind them. He kept looking at his notes for certain things that he should have known. My other complaint is that it was prefaced as "The History Of Arlington Stadium". It had nothing to do with any of the other events that occurred there. I guess when you have the Cowboys the Rangers will always come in second. Good luck with the new stadium DFW.

These were really dark days for the Rangers. They never made the postseason once in that stadium and were almost always near the last of the pack.
Arlington Stadium was not very good at all as a stadium. No amenities, bad sight lines, miserably hot with no shade in the Texas heat.
