  • Inspiration can strike anywhere, so when you're looking for what to do next, why not visit your closest heritage railway?
You'd be surprised at the amount of detail that can be found there that lends Itself to Model railways and the inspiration behind them!
This is the Ribble Steam Railway at Preston, running their Teddybear picnick special, with the trusty old Courageous!

There are so many take away's from this 19 minutes of gold, I would end up writing a TLDR if I mentioned them all. One small detail that did catch my eye was on the lightly rust coloured mineral (?) wagon on the right at 3:20 where the tops of the sides are bulging out. We don't buy them like that but I reckon a decent heat gun and a sturdy wedge could easily assist with mimicking the effect. Thanks for inspiring me to attempt another part of the hobby; modelling a heritage railway (or 3).

An heritage model railway is justification to run anything I want, any way I want. And you can even put all of your grandfathers old (non-running?!) models, from that box up in the loft, on display in the yard! You could even run a mainline spur with a more modern DMU shuttle to an off-scene staging line.

My nearest Heritage Railway is the 3ft gauge Cavan and Leitrim Railway in Dromod, Co . Leitrim ,Ireland. I,, moved here to work on that railway 30 years ago ,but I moved to other employment years back. I model (Irish) standard gauge (5' 3") stuff myself but while some heritage stock can occasionally be seen on Irish main lines, there are no standard gauge heritage railways here in the Republic. However the Downpatrick & County Down Railway in Northern Ireland features stock from North and South of the border and is well worth a visit. thanks for another great instalment, Craig

I've said for a long time that people can model what pleases them, because they're the only person who needs to be satisfied with the layout. And if someone complains that your layout isn't prototypical because you're running multiple eras of steam, or diesel and steam, or electric and steam, or with locos from multiple countries, the answer is very simple. "My layout is a Preservation Railway, because that's what pleases me." Anyone who continues to give you trouble after that is just a misery guts looking to drag you down with them.
My favorite preservation railway in the world is the Darjeeling Himalayan. It's been in continuous operation since it was built, and has continued using steam well into the 21st century, because it just plain works better for their particular application. Closer to home, I love the Bluebell (what can I say? I love Terriers!), and the Nene Valley is small, but easy for me to get to.

  • @carltontweedle5724
    @carltontweedle5724 4 месяца назад +1

Yes it gives you a reason to get steam trains and have a old line overgrown and on the decline. Plus lots of room making them look really dirty so weathering to the max.

Also, with a heritage railway you can get away with a large loco with a short train. Pretty much any loco up to an express loco even.... and you can choose which ever livery catches your eye.
The other advantage is that you can take advantage of second hand and sales on new loco. Just because the class 31 that is reduced to half price is in Intercity livery you don't have to rule it out because you only model BR Blue, on the 32nd of Septober 1975.....

You can justify a large locomotive on a short period train too - around Swindon in the 30s-40s, you could see a King hauling a local train. They would do this just to make sure the overhaul was completed with no issues, before putting the locomotive on a normal service train - and if there were problems, it wasn't too far to haul the test locomotive back to the workshop 😉

My layout is a heritage railway as I can run a mixture of steam, classic diesel, modern diesel, passenger rolling stock, freight rolling stock and maintenance vehicles like rail excavators.
You can now even run a HST on a preserved railway layout now as the Severn Valley Railway have now had them twice feature at a spring diesel gala, the 2024 gala being the second time as Colas rail are bringing their HST set for 2024. You can also have a excuse to run network rail or other rail maintenance companies track maintenance equipment on a test basis.
Another fantastic preserved railway is the Gwilli Railway in Carmarthenshire Wales as its a proper small rural branchline railway.

To answer your question, 100% yes!
My interest in models railways stems from the real railway's pivotal link in the industrail development of the UK, so I find heritage railways fascinating.
When I was a lad I used to pinch the real coal (initially Welsh Dry Steam & then Anthracite) from our coal house (or cwch) as it was called in South Wales, in order to load up my OO guage wagons.
Your video was very interesting. Your informative narrative sets it apart from the ususal purely video content.

One car of class 117 DMU being hauled by a class 03. Also had a visiting class 17, never seen one up close before. The only one still track worthy. Also something a little too big for the railway, Class 37. Which was ticking over most of the run, until it reached the 1:50 incline coming into Tenterden station. Lovely sound. I think modelling a preserved railway would mean a lot of raiding of secondhand bins in model shops for preserved railways have a lot of unrestored stock on full view. It means that trains can be run that never ran during their service days like an A4 in a pick up goods train or a Duchess on a coal train or industrial saddle tanks on five or six coach dining trains. Modelling a preserved railway means that anything goes like locos and stock in fictitious liveries. It can be modelled on a real preserved railway or it can be an excuse to let one's hair down and have fun
