And post a complaint/question about Model master Jackson Evans, thread shut down!
Oh really? Never heqrd of him, don't like reading essays to get a one sentence answer.
No it’s not just you . I’ve got sagging baseboards because they’ve been up the loft for 30 years - very difficult to correct , except by packing the track as you described . Makes uncoupling tricky as the stock rolls back on the loco ! The backscene ,at its most difficult to access location ,has dropped off and my Accurascale Deltic still randomly derails ( it is my track but everything else fine!) . Then a manufacturer releases a loco in a version that you quite fancy , but it’s already sold out on pre order ! These are all frustrations we have . On the other hand when it runs , which it does about 90% of the time , then it’s very relaxing watching the trains go round , even hearing the hum of wheels on track . And you are right . I don’t know if it’s a change in materials , but I do seem to spend a lot less time cleaning track and wheels . I think the move from steel track in the 70s to Nickel Silver has certainly helped . Still an analogue user . I turn the dial and the train goes so I don’t have all this programming crap and is CV29 set to BBCITVCH4 ! I have enough of electronics during the day .

Thank you Craig - one of the best YT videos ever - and only a day after a baseboard has been stood back up in the spare room - ‘for the time being… 🙄’
@@modelrailpaulcee oooh no, be careful of that - "just for now" "for the time being" "for the moment" are all dangerous synonyms for "it's going to stay here forever"
Yes, it is too expensive.
Trains that run perfectly well while you set up the second one, the minute you sit down to get comfy watching them or to do a bit of modelling and something derails or stops, you set it right and its fine for a few minutes until your back is turned.
Platform clearences youve triple cheeked in construction with things like the super wide Hornby Thomas & Friends 'Bill' or 'Ben' that afterwhich the platform surface mysteriously grows a few millimeters overnight and now fouls coach footsteps. Things that used to couple fine now uncouple during running despite no obvious reasons why.
Hornby motors just dying; on my Centenary Terrier 'Merton', my railroad Hall class, and my ruston 48ds, no reason why, motors just seem to die, nothing else affected.
Hornbys ruddy type 7 motors that stop and burst into plumes of acrid smoke. Etc etc...
It's just you Craig. Mine runs perfectly every time. 😉😂😂😂😂😂😂

Ah yes Craig, the joys of model railways! Random failures, unexplained derailing, electrical gremlins. I've had the lot. We're also fans of the classic Mini, and rest assured, they can be just as frustrating.. In the words of the scouser- "calm down, calm down!!!"

Yes i feel your pain my boards are 3' wide and its always happens on the furthest curved point in the corner, only have a 2' gap between the baseboard and the roof have to stand on steps to lay flat out which is now a 4' stretch it does not half give you neck ache unddoing track screws being in my 70's can only manage 10 minutes at a a time. But as you say the joys of owning a layout makes up for it when it is running perfect.
This rant was brilliant! Sadly I won't be at GETS but I hope you enjoy yourself there.
Never a true word spoken Craig but still we carry on and you me in stitches 😂😂😂😂
Cheers buddy😊
I built an N gauge layout about 50 years ago. I enjoyed the research, design and build stages but quickly discovered that running it held no interest to me. About 40 years ago I did a similar thing in OO gauge, a nice clean loft space became available to me. Once again I soon realised that running it wasn’t my thing. So, now I watch other peoples efforts and enjoy “how to” posts, probably down to my engineering background. So, thanks for taking on all the exasperation for me while I sit back and enjoy the hobby. Taking one for the would be railway modellers!
Sometimes its necessary to back away and clear your mind. That worked for me when I was railway modelling over 50 years ago. Then come back and crack on. The joy comes is when you fix it and it stays fix. At that point I forget about the struggles I had with it. Bill from California
Dear Reverend Iron horse, thankyou for your wonderfully inspiring sermon today. Just had my first rivet counter comment about the colour of my bridge. @@jongmans38 I think you're right, sometimes I can't bring myself to leave well enough alone though 😂
Thank you Craig, It's like you are telling my story for me. All those scenarios (Bar the track lifting ...so far) are familiar territory. As an oul lad returning to the hobby after almost 60 years, I was smart enough (and temporarily rich enough...Thanks pension) to have my baseboards ,tracklaying and wiring done for me, but soon found that my prime and most expensive locos don't like some of the curves and those beautiful detail bits below the buffer beams need to be snipped off so they can get over the wee points spigots that you mentioned. Of course there many other occasional issues ,often unexplained that occur just when you need nothing to go wrong ,so you can have a relaxing running session.
One thing that I found ,that does not appear to affect you is that the turning on of a video camera(or sometimes it's presence in the shed) will almost inevitably lead to all sorts of varied mayhem being unleashed and capturing a mere 3 minutes of nice footage can lead to 4 wasted hours, a near mental collapse and an overwhelming desire to spend the night with Jack Daniels or Capt. Morgan... But sure ,we'll do it all again next time.
@@MidlandsMusicGallery it goes on and on... Broken record modelling lol
Based on my experience with other technical hobbies, I think something we often fall prey to in these hobbies is not taking time to do regular maintenance work. I know it's hard to find or make the time, but think about it, the full scale does maintenance of way regularly, and particularly as regards to point work. Perhaps 10 minutes a day following an inspection and maintenance plan is the way to help make sure your layout will work when you want it to?
To give you an example, today being Thursday, I have a list of tasks to do to prepare myself for a technical hobby I do on Fridays (I race slot cars/Scalextric, competing nationally in it, as well as regular club nights on Fridays) - this is something I make time for every Thursday, because the last thing I want is to spend my evening trying to identify a problem that is fiddly to fix at the club, but a doddle to fix at home.
Personally, when my model railway is up and running, I'll be making myself a maintenance of way checklist to perform tasks from throughout the week, because a few minutes of prevention is absolutely worth hours of cure.
@@KidarWolf maintenance is one thing, things just going wrong is another 😭😂
I feel your pain and I made a decision a while ago. I gave up on wet ballasting a long time ago. I have used the Peco underlay, soaked in PVA and now Rocoline ready ballasted and I never get any maddening incidents. It's bleedin' expensive, but the long term benefit is stuff works and I can just play trains.
yes we all hate this hobby from time to time. Whenever i have to put a dcc decoder in an n scale engine and also have to do some soldering there, it is so damn small, i feel just like you. My heart bleeds for you. But i must say your video is so spot on. If John Cleese ever was into model railroading and would make a video about his problems in this great hobby it probably would end up just like this, so spot on and so dripping with rage. hope you will solve these problems but two thumbs up for a superb video !
Hehe it's all a bit of fun really, poking a finger at the things which annoy us all!
Oh boy you are spot on, I have just built a simple shunting layout on a shelf, all the track is european set track, before I screwed it down I tested every loco I had, after a week I decided everything was just running beautifuly so off I went, the first test after screwing it down was also fine but after about two days of playing, loco's started to stall on a turnout so I added another power feed straight after the dodgy switch, this did nothing, after a day of stuffing around the only thing I found was I could slide a small piece of paper under the spirit level where the loco's where stalling so I had obviously overscrewed the screw on that spot by .00000000000001% of a mm, I backed it off by about 1/4 of a turn and that fixed the problem, I have been seriously thinking of throwing this hobby in, I would be richer, happier and healthier. Sorry for the rant and thankyou for your video.
@@alanwilson307 it can be frustrating can't it?
But don't throw it in mate, when it works it's wonderful, truly!
Great comments. It is couplings….
Started modelling OO in the 90s and by 2010 had every different tension lock known to man fitted to my stock. Endless problems due to coupling issues, which I just thought was normal.
Then did US HO, fitting Kadees to all stock as I bought it. Almost no coupling issues….
Clearly I should retro fit kadees to all UK stuff, but that would mean a lot of work especially on older stock, or a big sell and rebuy expense.
Solution was to standardise on Hornby large D couplers. Lowest common denominator, but I have no problems with these, and Hornby make one for NEM sockets.
Did this and problem largely gone. Almost no coupling issues….
If anyone says they are out of scale I say rule 1 applies, and also scale differences from gauge are way bigger in OO anyway.

Craig what do you mean when you say you don’t have to worry about track cleaning as you run the legacy stuff?
@@doubleodave DCC concepts do some track mate,. Legacy is it's brand name
The one which really gets me is DCC concepts cobalt blue point motors. The brushes on mine now tend to carbon up, 20 of them. This really slows them down, and then they just seize completely. They're a pain in the backside to remove from the layout and then disassemble to get to the motor out. Then you can't access the commutator and brushes to clean them properly, so you end up flooding them with contact cleaner to try and clean them out. Then a week later the effing things crap out on you again. I've literally launched the sodding things across the room at this point.
Upgrade to IP Digitals mate if you can, never had any issues with mine at all - genuinely
Well then, I'm afraid things are just way too complex these days, decoders, ever more complex control boxes, point motors with more tech in them that Apollo had in it. It's all gone too far and the simple enjoyment of running trains has gone. Hope you get a break soon
I think we've all been there
your not the only one , it all happens to me . the worst is when someone comes round to have a look and it all starts to go wrong even though Ive checked and checked it before hand.
I feel for you, I think you better move over to stamp collecting (lol)🤣
I think we all have heard that model railways are expensive and this goes beyond your layout.
It's like building a house (your layout) without a foundation (environment control ) and I think the godfather of all your problems seems to be the environment your layout sits in, and the big cause are the extreme temperature fluctuations and not to forget humidity variations, that's for nothing good.
Often lofts are the most effected, and the worse your loft is insulated the bigger the problems become.
Two not cheap steps will give you result if you want to stay in the loft, first one is good insulation and second one is air conditioning.
And I think a proper air conditioner, not for you (but you also benefit), but for the layout will effect 80% of your problems, you can control the temperature and the humidity.
But it must run even if no one is there.
The other 20% is good insulation.
Your airco will do most work (even without insulation), but in order not to sky rocket your electricity bill, insulation keeps a better constant.
It come down to the principal of a refrigerator, making a constant controlled environment, and I'm convinced 95% of your stress is relieved…
Generally I only have one major radge...couplings...I hate tension locks ...I hate the fact that some older stock has no memories pockets ...and kadees are too pricey and a faff. All... Coupling related issues. My railway is in a caravan , up onto moo, eers ,in deepest north Yorkshire. Freezing most of the time due to the high winds, boiling when sun's out and winds dropped. it runs great more often than not but bloody couplings always give me a headache.
I feel your pain Craig! See you at GETS, let’s hope your karma has returned ❤
Failing eyesight and mental health, then the hammer and chisel of doom comes out to play. In an ideal situation, your layout construction is in a temperature controlled environment with very little humidity. Something the majority of us don’t have or afford. Has much has I tried modelling Alesmead in N gauge, I’m come to the conclusion I just can’t afford making more mistakes, So I’m now in the process of either exchange for an OO layout or sell everything at a loss. In a nutshell I am just bored with the hobby and the ripoff prices and lack of spares availability.
A slap from the model railway gremlin :) No mate it`s not just you.....why will this lovingly assembled train run round and round 11 times then derail? Drives me spare. Why, when I`ve spent a precious day off fixing every fault on the layout, does another one appear? Why does that bit of stock I really want to run disappear...? And why don`t I have the space or riches to run O gauge? Still love this hobby and my little trains!
Of course we still love it, and I think that's what makes it all the more frustrating when things go off the rails, so to speak!😂
@@IronHorseRailways Been to a local show today. Of about 15 layouts, four weren`t working or being fixed. I did buy an engineers wagon, even in N I had an enjoyable hour detailing and weathering it.

As you said you are not alone and things could be worse. Bachmann split chassis locomotives you fix one fault and then another one comes along. Enough said. Uugghh! Split chassis 😅😅
My number one blood pressure raiser are N gauge rail joiners. Almost impossible to slide them on when new, after struggling for hours they do eventually fit , next thing with all the pushing and pulling in they suddenly expand and are too loose.
The most fun though is trying to get the plastic insulated joiner to go and not bend and dip under the rail that you think you have just joined together, and then sometimes they just fall off never to be seen again.
Oh my brief dip into N gauge saw me with one stuck in my thumb! Like, three mm inside my thumb!😂

I'll see you there Saturday AM dude 😁
I use the Peco dropper wires soldered to the fish plates, never tried to solder droppers to track and I know I would just mess it up.
My soldering is poor. I can't get the iron to the right temperature so my solder joints are a bit hit and miss.
I saw Peco pre soldered fishplates and thought this would solve my problem. Turns out Pecos pre soldered fishplates don't fit Pecos code 55 unifrog points! So far, I've destroyed about 5 or 6 fishplates learning how to solder properly!
All of the above mate, rather stupidly I love living in my narrowboat with a 1940s vintage engine, however, my other passion is my model railway, tis a bugger, what was I thinking combining these two passions??? however, me mate always used to say its not a problem, its just a puzzle ... see ya Sunday mukka, in my hoggs flat cap and me 1964 porters jacket ( why should all the sci-fi convos get all the cosplay stuff!) And cheap phosphor bronze wiper contacts, and building summat and a vital component hits the deck, even without carpets finds a wormhole in space, you finally complete an obscure conversion/modification and 3 manufacturers come up with a vastly superior version of what you attempted, and it's too bleeding expensive!

There are times when I'm sure my model railway defies the laws of physics and just won't work as it should despite approaching problems from multiple angles but this can't be the case. I swear at it more than anything else but overall it probably functions correctly 90,% of the time. Would be much higher if I hadn't gone DCC + point motors but there's definitely added pleasure offset against that. When locos and rolling stock p***S me off I generally shelve them until I'm in the mood to investigate but track/wiring problems are obviously different. All I can say is 'never surrender'.. the show must go on.
- - Just get under the board, with a torch in your teeth - - I can't 'just' get under, I have to shift all the stuff that has migrated under there for storage, first, and that needs somewhere to put it, which means making a space somewhere else - round and round! - - - One common problem I used to have (but no longer, the cat passed away last year) was finding clumps of discarded fur (or even vomited-up fur-balls) hidden in inaccessible locations such as inside tunnels, where cat decided to have a sly kip and a good scratch - thus clogging up motors, gears, crank-pins etc! Getting it out again is a pain, especially when it has wound itself round and round until has jammed tight AND soaked up the oil - the loco is stuck in the tunnel, and you can't just pull it out backwards, because all the stock derails - - - you know the story! - -- Oh yes, manufacturer's pre-orders - that MIGHT be released in four years time. When you get older, etc, you start to wonder if you will still be around in four years - will you have given up, or will you be wearing your wooden overcoat!! - - - or some whiz-kid comes up with a new super-duper whatsit for the doodah, that makes what you have look like clockwork. There are good reasons why John Ahern's Madder Valley is in the Pendon Museum and Buckingham Great Central is being preserved by Tony Gee.
To get you some inspiration, see if you can obtain the books by John Ahern and the second edition of Buckingham Great Central by Rev Peter Deny.
These will give you some great inspiration and enlightenment.
The "Club" recognized the difficulties in the 70s and by process of elimination what worked and what was causing all the finger poking which we now see all over the u tube exhibition videos.
My latest incarnation of layout has been running since 2014 and in that time I have only had to replace 1 Peco Adaptor Base and 1 Curved Point. The only difficulty was this summer when heat expansion caused the 36 way D connector to come slightly adrift.
The automation of Dapol and MSE Signals utilizing IRDOT Detectors went incredibly smoothly and works wonderfully.

The one problem me and my brother have is the fish plate they look like the two pieces of track are together no its not you spend five to ten minutes trying to figure out which one of the little baskets its giving you grief then you sort it and start to run the locomotive round and the track comes apart,( find the big hammer time) so put the track back and it works for the rest of the time you want to use it, then the I'ver the train controller stop working because you know the rest, so long story short we end up putting it away or put a different locomotive on.
Hmmm... So, here's me wanting to get into model railways to help my pretty poor mental health and videos like this give me the idea its just another way to the dark side. Maybe I should steer well clear, give up with any hobbies and hide in a corner.
Well corners have their own issues to deal with too!😂
@@IronHorseRailways That settles it then... time to get the best of both worlds and build a model railway in a corner 😁👍
@@MrWilfAdventures 😂😂 madman!!
Totally agree it’s when you just want an hour playing trains that it all goes pear shaped and you are lucky if you get 5 minutes 🥵
An example of the gods not looking down favourably was installing a HM7000 in it went sound but no movement. Reinstall , de link try again no avail. Search the internet no real help so give up. Come back the next day and it moves but a little stop start . So next job clean track and put a stay alive in . AaasaGH
If something is going to go wrong it's going to happen in the middle of shooting a video for you tube. That gremlin is sat there waiting to strike. It goes something like this. I say let's see how well this locomotive goes over points followed by a derailment. Why now why grrr. Then I find the camera has stopped recording mid scene. It's why most of my videos are posted in the small hours. I can do this as I'm retired. I have often ended up at the pub where happiness is often found. Cheers.

When I come to power, I'll buy RUclips and disable adverts! Not a lot I can do about that 😕
