This Was 3D Printed?! - MASSIVE Lithophane

  • The Creality CR-10 S5 has a build volume of 500x500x500mm, insanely big, and bigger is always better (I've heared). I took the time to 3D print a HUGE lithophane, a total printing time of almost 100 hours! The motive of this lithophane was quite special as it is a painted pictured by one of my old teachers back from sixth grade.
    CR-10 3D printer: goo.gl/QvERnf
    Software to create STL files from pictures: 3dp.rocks/litho...
    Jag gör litofani-tavlor på beställning: rclifeon.com
    The lithophane was printed with 0.2mm layer height, 100% infill, 3 perimeters, 30mm/s and basic white PLA filament. The frame for the picture was printed on the S5 as well, but with a 0.5mm nozzle and 0.3mm layer height. Using 12V LED lights with a 12V 5A adapter worked great. Super happy with the result of this project!

    I appreciate these vids on lithophanes. I've had great results on an Ender 3 pro. A little hint I rotate the curved standing panel 80° so the majority of the moves along the standing wall are produced by the bed platform Y axis and the X axis makes the smaller moves for the profile. I find this also reduces shake because the panel as it's attached to the bed is sideways and thus more stable when the bed moves. 👍🏼

      The 3D printers run on 24v DC, he plugs in 230v but since the printers ship worldwide they must use a transformer to run on DC which is cheap. I run a machine shop in my garage as a hobby but does not really affect the power bill. I run a 240v 80 gallon air compressor, 110v lathe/mill, beadblast cabinet & dust collector & powder coating equipment. Our monthly bill is under $100 which includes the house. .

    LOL. It's a 5 year old post but I'll comment anyway: That quality for that size is INSANE! 100 hours is also INSANE no wonder why you printed by your bed. Imaging that going bad 75% through? I have enough issues with keeping my 127mm prints steady at the top. If you haven't printed a Lithophane they you can't really appreciate how amazing this one is! Bravo!

    • @michaelm_720
      @michaelm_720 6 лет назад

      PLA should stick well as long as you get your leveling correct. With ABS, you need a very hot print bed (probably 60 to 100 degrees), and you probably will need a brim.

    Cool print! Just curious, do you feel safe with leaving the cr-10 printing over night/unattended? And how do you get the prints to stick so well without heating the bed. I have a CR-10 and I am don't like leaving it printing alone yet. What do you think?

    • @RcLifeOn
      @RcLifeOn  6 лет назад +2

      No, I don't feel safe leaving any 3D printer unattended for a long period of time. I have modified the CR-10 S5 quite a bit, I removed the heated bed completely and replaced the power supply with a higher quality power adapter. The prints stick without a heating bed by using the TESA Easy Stick glue. Do I think you should leave your printer unattended? No, not without precautions.

    Looks great! I wonder how glow in the dark PLA would work for that?

    • @rebeltaz123
      @rebeltaz123 6 лет назад +2

      I don't think it would work. The idea is that the thicker the layers, the less light that is allowed to come through, thereby making those areas darker than the thinner layers. Lithophanes rely on a transmitted light source as opposed to a reflected or, in the case of GITD, a radiant light source.

    HELP got a cr-10 from gearbest worked great for the first 2 months then in December tried some exotic filaments and haven’t been able to print since in pla
    I have purchased the upgraded cr-10 extruder, steel gear, along with more nozzles to the point that I can print in nylon no problem (quite fast) but when ever I try PLA the pack pressure builds to the point where the gear clicks and slips yet resulting in under extrusion.
    Quite often once that starts I try and take the Bowden tube out to see what is happen in the extruder and appears it is clicking because it can not push through the tube
    Any suggestions
    Thanks

  • @jamesburkhardt5143
    @jamesburkhardt5143 5 лет назад

    I am thinking you could print the Lithophane without as much sway by turning the print 90 degrees so as the print bed moves forward and back, it won't sway due to the wider footprint

  • @Sembazuru
    @Sembazuru 5 лет назад

    Another way to reduce flopping issues (might not work as well for curved lithophanes, might induce twisting) is to change the orientation of the print to the bed. Taking into account the movement axis of the bed, print it with the width parallel to the y-axis motion.
