This Was 3D Printed?! - MASSIVE Lithophane

- The Creality CR-10 S5 has a build volume of 500x500x500mm, insanely big, and bigger is always better (I've heared). I took the time to 3D print a HUGE lithophane, a total printing time of almost 100 hours! The motive of this lithophane was quite special as it is a painted pictured by one of my old teachers back from sixth grade.
CR-10 3D printer: goo.gl/QvERnf
Software to create STL files from pictures: 3dp.rocks/litho...
Jag gör litofani-tavlor på beställning: rclifeon.com
The lithophane was printed with 0.2mm layer height, 100% infill, 3 perimeters, 30mm/s and basic white PLA filament. The frame for the picture was printed on the S5 as well, but with a 0.5mm nozzle and 0.3mm layer height. Using 12V LED lights with a 12V 5A adapter worked great. Super happy with the result of this project!

Spherical moon lamp on the CR-10 S5 next?! -->200h printing😲
Är du i Helsingborg imorgon?
Juste tack så mycket Jonathan!
@rclifeon where do you buy cr10 s5
too much filament...
Can it even handle that long??!!
this is awesome! Well done!
Simon,You should totally upload the file for the lithophane frame onto thingiverse. Great design!
Beautiful creation Simon. A very nice way to honor a teacher who make such a positive impact on your life.
How cool would it be if you used individually addressable RGB LEDs so you could cast colour onto the buildings and water!
Stu Elliott would love to see that 😊
I saw a guy make something similar he too the picture of the original on and put it behind the litho and when the light hit it it made it a colored litho
that's too complicated for the kid
EZ PZ with an arduino and a modified blink sketch

Do you still have the STL for thelight box frame?? That’s really nice
I appreciate these vids on lithophanes. I've had great results on an Ender 3 pro. A little hint I rotate the curved standing panel 80° so the majority of the moves along the standing wall are produced by the bed platform Y axis and the X axis makes the smaller moves for the profile. I find this also reduces shake because the panel as it's attached to the bed is sideways and thus more stable when the bed moves. 👍🏼
Hey, you could print 2 Big lithophanes and place them back to back. then you dont need support.

This, exactly., but then you would need a 680m reel of filament 😭
Put the Einstein model video
I dont have a percentage in my cr-10
You should have sent this to your past teacher
How hight is ur electric bill
The 3D printers run on 24v DC, he plugs in 230v but since the printers ship worldwide they must use a transformer to run on DC which is cheap. I run a machine shop in my garage as a hobby but does not really affect the power bill. I run a 240v 80 gallon air compressor, 110v lathe/mill, beadblast cabinet & dust collector & powder coating equipment. Our monthly bill is under $100 which includes the house. .
thats some... uhhh... interesting music you got there.
100 HOURS OMG!!!when I print more than 5 hours I found it s a lot but 100 hours!!! Awesome.
Hijack I've printed 212 hours. One print. Insane.
Donovan Morgan really?!how tall was it?
Hijack more was on quality. Took 2.5 jg
I print 60-300 hr prints all the time on my Raise3d n2 Plus... but I’m a 3dhub
Same here
This was insanely cool! Going to have to try this sometime.

You're awesome brother...
Hi , thank you for this video , i would to ask if where i can get the software of the frame you used in your lithophane project? if you could share it with...it much appreciated. Thank you.:)
Nice, but sadly you are still trapped in the big lie (Hawking passed away Decades ago..I met the Real One at Duke University During a conference with Paul Davies and kip Thorne.. Mr.Hawking was funny, Cheeky, looked completely different and Was Literally slapping girls bottoms while he still could..he was cool and not the daft radio controlled puppet (#5) lols.. Also, NOBODY LIVES MORE THAN A FEW YEARS WITH ALS, LET ALONE 30+ NOBODY IN HISTORY..EVER. … everything in this Reality is a LIE.. SCIENCE, HISTORY, EVEN THE SKY AND EARTH…ALL A LIE!.. they are hiding this because they are scared..Life is So very important. Every action, choice, everything.. compartmentalization can hide anything)
Gift it to your teacher
LOL. It's a 5 year old post but I'll comment anyway: That quality for that size is INSANE! 100 hours is also INSANE no wonder why you printed by your bed. Imaging that going bad 75% through? I have enough issues with keeping my 127mm prints steady at the top. If you haven't printed a Lithophane they you can't really appreciate how amazing this one is! Bravo!
Very cool! I saw someone print the image in color on transparency, and then lay the transparency in from behind. Creates a cool colored effect that would compliment that painting style nicely!
Please make video on 3d printed DIY ARC REACTOR from iron man movie......
Maybe someday you could help me set up cura 3.6 for my s5......
Can you help me with my cr 10 s5 cura settings please?
Love your videos :D i made hovercraft :D is it possible to make some frame with led holder for lithophane? Thank you!
Looks actually really cool but, how did you do to print that so slim thing without it failing?
What are the background soundtracks that you are using?
Can you make a lithophane stamp? I think it should work if you print it with flexible filament.
Image when the electrician turns off the electricity like 10 h before end :O
Sweet Job! would it help with the light to print the frame in black?
Hi from Ukraine.That is Awesome.
Would you ever sell the file for the frame? I'm a photographer and would love to offer these image box lithophanes as products!
Hello, can you pass the link of the old logan's model? great video, greetings from Argentina
Could you give as your design for the box please
I have been trying to turn the mona lisa into a lithopahane but the image to lithophane site keeps failing to process the image larger that 300mm. Do you use a specific browser to use the Image to Lithophane site for large prints or do you simply scale them to that size afterwards?
I just wish that you would have shown how you built that holder, and how you were connecting the wires. you went too fast and did not say what you were doing. how did you know which connectors were positive, and negative ??
Hi. Is it possible to make lithophane with glow-in-the-dark filament?
Hello friends. I'm a beginner in this business - that you will advise so that the first layer is well adhered to the table(PLA,ABS)?
PLA should stick well as long as you get your leveling correct. With ABS, you need a very hot print bed (probably 60 to 100 degrees), and you probably will need a brim.
Hey I know I am super late but is it possible to link the frame. U have really inspired me to do more stuff like this. Love ur vids.
You should prep and paint the frame to isolate the image and eliminate the light leakage. Are you giving a copy to the artist?
Great job on the light box frame !
The frame is fantastic. Is the STL file available for purchase?
Put a link for the frame i love it.perfect for a wedding photo.
You could strategically place the leds and colorize the print.
Very interesting! I have never printed one. But for sure I will. A must for a hobby photographer. I don’t own such a massive printer. But 300mm in xyz should be okay. Which one of my printers is capable of.
Rotate the print 90 degrees and you don't need the supports. And the ripples will not be an issue.
I have a tevo tarantula pro, 1.75 PLA will work?
Maybe I missed it earlier. Is there a reason for using both cool white and soft white lights?
It is a wonderful piece. Good job
What is the lithohane size ??? Can I print it with my normal 10s ???
I don't use 100% infill. I use shell to fill up the inside, its faster and more stable
I love your videos can u do a cr10 giveway just asking
A bedroom floor should be the last place to put the 3d printer on!!!
Could you paint the back and the color come through
Dude whats with the band aide and all the elbow damage OMG nobody else noticed, I am concerned because your videos are great and I don't want them to stop ... did you have to fight off fans? :)
you can also put a rgb led to make a fade 😉
im doing this with my Elegoo neptune max
This guy deserves more subs! like, wtf?!
Hi i got an anet a8 recently and i have been having trouble dialing in the settings but i cant open your printer profiles because it is in .fff and i have cura. Would you be able to maybe send me screenshots of your settings using dropbox? Thanks heaps.
Did you upload this litophane frame stl somewhere? I'm trying to make one, but I don't even know where to start.. No skills with 3d modeling
How does nozzle dia effect Lithophane ?
Hey Simon, absolutely nice 3D print! If the lion was nice, this is absolutely better. Just a question.. What happened to your arms? Did u scrached yourself falling off that Motorized skateboard you made? :-D
Cool print! Just curious, do you feel safe with leaving the cr-10 printing over night/unattended? And how do you get the prints to stick so well without heating the bed. I have a CR-10 and I am don't like leaving it printing alone yet. What do you think?
No, I don't feel safe leaving any 3D printer unattended for a long period of time. I have modified the CR-10 S5 quite a bit, I removed the heated bed completely and replaced the power supply with a higher quality power adapter. The prints stick without a heating bed by using the TESA Easy Stick glue. Do I think you should leave your printer unattended? No, not without precautions.
Man... what have you done ?! Now I have to buy CR-10 S5! :D
Also, could you make a video how cr-10 is performing now for you? I'm interested in printer depreciation issues. I started noticing slight movements on the wheels on my cr-10, might have to swap them out sometime soon.
@RCLifeOn hey hows it going man. Your videos are so great. I had a question. Why do you choose to use fusion 360 then transition over to simplify3d. Cant we just do everything on Fusion360? than you for your feedback, the community appreciates you blessings!
Looks great! I wonder how glow in the dark PLA would work for that?
I don't think it would work. The idea is that the thicker the layers, the less light that is allowed to come through, thereby making those areas darker than the thinner layers. Lithophanes rely on a transmitted light source as opposed to a reflected or, in the case of GITD, a radiant light source.
yeah, it doesnt work. ive tried it, you dont get the contrast showing through.
look at his discription "The lithophane was printed with 0.2mm layer height, 100% infill, 3 perimeters, 30mm/s and basic white PLA filament."
Why didnt you put a raft in the slicer?
I ve got the same at 10 radiolink transmitter
What slicing soft where do you use
Did you get CR-10 V2?
I am waiting for the video from you!
Another Lithophane? Still no review about the Tero vs CR-10. Or an update on the nylon filament hockey stick.
Awesome idea and video!
What is the litophane's weight and the material cost? Becasue 100 hours of printing is probably not that cheap, at least if your filament isn't sponsored...
That was great! I want to test it with a RGB led matrix behind and see if you can 'watercolor-effect' one.
That is impressive. How did u pull off the dimensions? I need to figure this out I'm planing on doing a family picture for Christmas presents this year.
HELP got a cr-10 from gearbest worked great for the first 2 months then in December tried some exotic filaments and haven’t been able to print since in pla
I have purchased the upgraded cr-10 extruder, steel gear, along with more nozzles to the point that I can print in nylon no problem (quite fast) but when ever I try PLA the pack pressure builds to the point where the gear clicks and slips yet resulting in under extrusion.
Quite often once that starts I try and take the Bowden tube out to see what is happen in the extruder and appears it is clicking because it can not push through the tube
Any suggestions
Thanks
idk if you already took care of that but: the crs10 v2 actually has those rods securing it's very top. maybe it's also available as an upgrade kit.
How did you calculate the curvature?
Hello, you're very good, congratulations! Thanks to your videos on the lithofanie I was able to make some nice presents to some dear friends! They appreciated a lot! Greetings from Italy! Ciao
WOW that looks Cool
Gonna try this!
This is really cool! It's hard to see from the video, but did the LED's show up more concentrated in some areas than others? Did the distance you put between the lithophane help make the LED's not look spotty?
I am thinking you could print the Lithophane without as much sway by turning the print 90 degrees so as the print bed moves forward and back, it won't sway due to the wider footprint
Another way to reduce flopping issues (might not work as well for curved lithophanes, might induce twisting) is to change the orientation of the print to the bed. Taking into account the movement axis of the bed, print it with the width parallel to the y-axis motion.
12V 5Amps? 1.5A would fit without any problem.
im just wondering how the 3dp.rocks website did not crash on this massive lithophane. once i try big ones the website just crashes and becomes unresponsive... :(
I have the same problem.. have you found a solution for this issue?
Very nice. Have you seen biqu magician 3d printer. I am looking for stating on 3d printing world buying one of this.
Hello my frind plz i want ask u
What is the best kind of hard and flexible plastic
I make curved lithos also and would like to know what degree of curve you used and can you put your light box on thingiverse?
Simon, I think it would be really cool if you tried printing as small as possible, for example tiny figurines or soldiers of 1 cm tall or something similar. Maybe you could test which of your printers is best at printing small things and details.
Have you tried using PETG filament on the lithophane?
Were you in love with your teacher ??
ur video always make me feel excited of doing things with that machine.. its kind of motivation .. lol.. anyway gratz for gud video..
Did you fall of your skateboard, Simon? 😂
(fr tho, u ok?)
Your little sister's bedroom or yours?
Stephen Hawkins, rest in peace. Thanks for the vid, cant afford patreon, will you release vid on youtube later?
Looks absolutely amazing.
Do you think that a potentiometer to adjust the brightness of the leds would make sense, in order to adjust to different lightning conditions, or is that not an issue?
Ps what is your monthly filament-budget 😄
Who could possibly dislike this?
Simon you know you need to give that to your teacher man! She would be honored and very impressed! I say make the hawking one for the hobby room! Nice nod to Hawking by the way.
try doing it with colour paint bits
what settings do you use? great videos! i have little balls in mine when u got it
