Joey Santore at Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't is one of my absolute favs. Can't beat adding comedy to nature education. Thank you from a railroad laborer's daughter and fellow naturalist for your service educating the public and making me laugh. Sometimes self-taught passion is worth 2 degrees.
@euthmialy, I like the demonym, "CHEEK-UH-GO-IN", but that's the first time I've heard or saw Chicago used as a verb. Am I missing out on something? I want to do the Chicago with everyone else!
He's amusing but he lost me when he went into a natural health store and chose to mock the remedies of snake oil. As much as he understands botany he doesn't understand homeopathy 🤷 I can't subscribe to somebody that close minded
I would like to congratulate Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't for getting a TV network to basically run an add segment promoting their channel, I especially liked the end where it had your logo and advertised "Kill your lawn Tuesdays."
Joey is spot on about getting into ecology to pull yourself out of the depressing reality that is this industrial society. Anybody can teach themselves about this stuff.
Yay! This made my morning. So glad you featured them! It's great to see when ecological awareness efforts are leading to more biodiversity in our essential waterways.
As a chicago native I've been watching Joey since he had less than a hundred views per video. He's a blessing to this god forsaken city and god's (almost) green earth and I hope nothing but good for him... I tried Al's liquid salad and I swear to christ you can shine a light down my throat and illuminate the print of my underpants.
Yes!!! Psyched you got exposure for your excellent channel, and hopefully opening more eyes to biodiversity and appreciation of wildlife! Thanks Chonkosaurus!
A truly magnificent local tv spot - so well done. You both were supremely eloquent, educational, and funny all at the same time. And the hosts were a step above the usual talking heads - BRAVO !!!
I got a sneaking suspicion this is the same Chonk we saw when I was teaching a group of college students, we joined the Friends of the Chicago River canoe tour in April of 2016 - he was big then, and is thicker now, and they live for decades. Wouldn't be surprised. APEX CHONK
These two just make my heart sing! The spotlight that they shine on the beauty and diversity on our planet is as valuable as ever in today's world. Love you guys, and thank you WGN for having them on!
Hey everyone welcome back to crime pays but botany doesn’t. Today we’re lookin at this big fucking banger of a snapping turtle absolutle beaut. This fucking snapping turtle is a panty dropper and would look great in any landscape.
I was grinning to my ears seeing the footage with that sweet commentary in the background, but I really lost it when I saw the guys in the studio. Great piece of TV right here, smart move.
So, im a longtime fan of Joey, but I gotta give massive props to Al for wearing a goddamn Dominicks sweater on WGN morning news. The deeper you look the more layers of absolute Chicago you can see that both of them embody lmao
I think these two guys hosting a show would make me subscribe to this RUclips channel for a local tv news channel where I do not live, and that's a beautiful thing
FWIW, it's believed that the reason for Snapping turtles being so defensive is because they are unable to pull their legs and head fully into their shells. They are well aware of that, so they compensate by protecting themselves with that famous mouth and claws.
Very cool. Even before Chonkasaurus blew up to be world famous in Chicago, I was wondering if there was going to be a tee shirt with her amphibious Highness. My "Department of Unauthorized Forestry" tee is getting pretty shabby, time for a "River Habitat Crisis Commission" shirt or somethin'. Get on dat, will ya'?
I read the article on Block Club and had to see if there was video. It's even better now knowing the guy who found it was Joey Santore with Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't! Dude is a legend!
I just want to hear that big Burly guy on the far right say " da bears"😂😂😂 I love Joes Channel I watch it both on RUclips and Facebook been following him for a couple of years now. He has probably some of the best commentary ever on any nature Channel I've ever watched
I really enjoy this news article and both guest speakers! I would have liked to take a class in this field. Thank you for the information; it was really entertaining.
When I was like 12, a friend and I were walking down a creek behind our houses and about a mile down we needed to cross. We started stepping on big stones to cross and my friend slipped on a big mossy rock and fell in, he got up and told me to not step on that rock and when he pointed at it it moved a little bit. We realized what it was and immediately ran home and grabbed a rope and a giant storage tote ran back and wrangled it somewhat into the tote and dragged the tote to the bank and set the turtle on the bank to take pictures of it and then put it back where we found it. Being grown I now realize that we were wrong to mess with it at all but I have developed photos of it somewhere. Was roughly the size of like a pushmower, just a giant snapper.
@@arbyscurlyfries9490 I heard a story first hand about a very large snapper that would emerge from a pond near Tecumseh, Ne and take hot dogs from folks picnicking near the pond. I've handled snappers for years, some were very cooperative with a few aspects of being treated by a human. They are a surprisingly adept creature and are sensitive, can become quite docile.
What’s crazy is we think that’s a big one ….. when I was a kid my grandfather told me stories of catching and eating them when he was younger and he said they caught snappers 3-5 foot around, that was probably about 100 years ago now! The waters used to be cleaner the turtles lived longer and ate better!
Is funny and away to learn Botany...i like to see very much the videos "Crime Pays and Botany Doesn't"...and now i am the person who is taken photos of must the plants i see in the country i live😊
The story was really about joey santore and his new found love of botnay & the snapping turtle was just the segway but i loved it these guys were hilarious i hope there is a podcast out there of these 2 dudes comedy with education about plants , love it keep up the good work.
Except the episodes on habitat destruction for the border wall. They’re trying so hard to save everything they can, but there’s just not the time or manpower.

Hey don’t sell Al short either!
I like watching his channel too 🤠
I read that in his voice
It blows my mind how the dude in that video can list the most complicated botany names in his reels.... stuff I can't even pronounce 🤣
But are gems.
If you’re not subscribed to Crime Pays But Botany Doesn’t, you’re missing out on peak educational content from the most Chicagoan to ever Chicago.
Huge agree! I'm a grandma who used to work in horticulture. I learn something every video.
He made me get into native plants!
He sounds like a farmer that also racketeered alcohol in the 20s lol

This turtle has done so much for our small business, we should elect it Mayor!
@@overbythere I know you're joking but there have been about 9 or 10 dogs elected mayor in various parts of our country.

I love his attitude on life. his video on ditch weed in chicago got me hooked!!
Yay! This made my morning. So glad you featured them! It's great to see when ecological awareness efforts are leading to more biodiversity in our essential waterways.
Thank you so much for having them on and for giving them time to explain why what they do is so important! Their RUclips channel is fantastic!
What a treat to have these boys on the news.
It was a pleasure and an honor
Professors of science and anthropology nice.
JOEY FOR MAYOR!!!!
Many turtles are not like the alligator snapping turtle
Chonkosaurus must be protected at all costs. Especially from social media selfie idiots. Fame is a double edged sword.
Hopefully, she finds a private place to lay her eggs.
My sentiment exactly, some *sshole will now attempt to hurt this beautiful snapper just because they now know it's there smfh

You should give these two a regular segment!
I concur, we are open to offers
That’s a fantastic idea!!
They wouldn’t want it, if you know anything about the channel
@@missyflutter5562 that’s truly a shame. This was probably thier most widely viewed segment ever.
@@missyflutter5562 so you've never heard Joey speak at horticultural symposiums I presume. Ignore the language, it won't cause permanent damage.
Joey Santore is a Chicago treasure.
My absolute favorite channel. Do yourselves a favor and binge botany videos. You can thank me later.
Never heard a more Chicago accent than Al Scorch. I was waiting for him to whip out a brat and beer LOL.
Strangely enough that’s what I had for breakfast!
His podcast is the best Botany channel there is.
So glad these guys got featured! One of my favorite channels, hilarious and very educational. If you havent, definitely check them out
Thanks for the love! -Al
I can only hope this gives more of a spotlight to Joey

When you're a giant snapping turtle , having a shell for protection is a mere formality at best.
FWIW, it's believed that the reason for Snapping turtles being so defensive is because they are unable to pull their legs and head fully into their shells.

That turtle got so fat it outgrew its shell.
Chonkosaurus has outgrown his shell/home, no shell to retreat to when danger is near. ...but who or what in that lake would want to mess with you.
I love the very last line... "They're a puzzle." 😄
