It does not happen often, but this time I have to say: Poor americans. The 530d (US 535d) is just no match for the real 535d we have in europe. The 30d is pretty fast, but the way the 35d delivers is just amazing. More hp, more torque, less turbo-lag.. And there is no way I would prefer the 535i over the 535d. The diesel has more than 50% torque MORE than the petrol version, and even has more horsepower. AND better fuel economy..
@@arlind530d I fully agree with you. This diesel lover must listen to the acceleration tests of both. The 530d is really noisy. I love the 535i anytime.
Can't tell you how happy I am to hear a car review by Chris, especially such a positive one, about a car I actually own!!! So used to Ferrari this, porsche that which is, let's be honest, fantasy world for me but spectacular nonetheless. But this is real world, he's praising a car I own. I've never felt so special...
Its amazing how applied we've become. The technology, performance, safety and economy of new cars is amazing. 38 mpg out of this beautiful sedan? My first car was a Chevy Vega with a four banger, touted as an economy car it got about 25 mpg. I had a vw diesel in the eighties. Great mileage, but slow, dirty and loud. Car makers have done wonders in the past thirty or so years. What's really amazing is how solid and good the fit and finish is on even entry level cars. Many viewers here are probably too young to remember when average cars use to develop small squeaks and rattles as they aged. Some even came off the line with them. It was so irritating to have a car with 10,000 miles on it and have to listen to a small squeak or rattle buried in the dash. They were virtually impossible to trace and fix. I wish I could be around in another thirty years to see what's next...
This format is growing on me, I may have to take back some of my remarks from previous videos! Something about watching Mr Harris review a car and it immediately makes me want to go outside and just cruise around haha!
Have a 2014 M Sport 535d in the US. The US 535d = European 530d, basically with one variable vane turbo. Still the engine is awesome, and so is the rest. I agree with all the comments Chris makes, except for the nicer sound the 535i makes... When i test drove the 535d, the deep sound upon faster acceleration put an additional smile on my face and every day i have driven it since. Note that only at low 20mph speeds you hear the diesel a little and at higher speeds you just cannot tell. Equally quiet as the petrol version. It also feels faster when changing from one speed to another than the 535i due to the 415 ft lbs of torque available at low rpm. Touching the throttle it indeed leaps forward and together with the steering feel, the brakes and M-sport suspension just gives great control of and feel to the car and the road. The 6 cylinder cylinder turbo diesel in combination with the smooth shifting 8 speed gear box is a match made in heaven. BMW (engine) and ZF (gear box) did a great job. 1600rpm at 80 mph, effortless. And gear changes you absolutely do not feel and only hear a little from the engine. Then there is of course the 550i, very nice, more expensive yet, no doubt faster but a lot thirstier. In city driving i do 28.2 mpg (in US gallons, this would be 33.9 mpg in the UK). Also love the M-sport steering wheel, the size, the thickness, the feel of the leather, just an amazing combination. Here in the US they have now made the M-sport steering wheel standard on all 2015 models, rightly so. Overall a really awesome car. The BMW 535d in looks, feel and driving experience is ahead of its German E-class and A6 rivals at this point.
Hi Chris and /DRIVE, thank you for the nice review video. I've got one question: I was puzzled by your statement that there are no other german sedan cars with "big fast diesels". At least in Germany you can get those "equivalents": the a6 sedan with the 313hp/650nm diesel and the e-class sedan with a slightly lower-powered 252hp/620nm. Given that information: What would you recommend? Cheers from Germany and keep up the good work :)
Thank you /Drive - that was excellent. Chris seems less constrained by the new format for these segments, too; although Matt may find his rhythm after a few more episodes. Keep up the good work.
2 weeks ago I got the German aquivalent (station wagon) for a couple of days. The torque of it is massiv. It feels like you have even much more power. At the same time it feels like you are driving a much smaller car. The steering is so damn agile, that this huge car really feels like a small sportscar. If you can afford it, I can highly recommend it... You don't "need" more...
Chris, couldn't agree with you more. Taking delivery of mine next week (European xDrive version) and just love the torque! Fantastic machine that is sure to put a smile on my face every time I hit the throttle.
These new reviews are PERFECT drive, you have nailed it and continue to move head and shoulders above any other output of automotive journalism. Chris brilliant as always but 9 for economy (38mpg) and 4/5 for noise both questionable imo. Thanks!
Hope they keep this kind of reviews to the more humdrum kind of cars... I'm always interested in knowing CH opinion on a car, but this style is what I would expect from C&D, R/T, etc.
Wurzelzwerg1212 the European 535D will cost a lot more money than the 530d. an european 535d in the US will cost a lot more than the 535i in the US. thus BMW way of thinking is that consumers will just get the 535i instead of the 535d in the us. so they bring the european 530d
love these test/drive videos - they are somewhat short and to the point. on the topic of the f10, I had a long term loaner F10 528I when my E90 went in for service. the car had excellent interior, electronic features, the 4 cylinder + 8AT combo was willing, good fuel economy, good space but it didn't really drive like a BMW should and the exterior of the stock one i had was bland imo. I think the 535d (with a JB tune) would be a highway monster.
Did they improve the steering feel with the 2014 version? I drove a Pre-facelift F10 a few times and it had catastrophic steering feedback. You have no idea what the front wheels were doing.
Audi has the A6 with a 313hp V6 Biturbo TDI, so they acutally have a big diesel in this class. I would love to see a review from Chris on the BMW M550d, with the 381hp inline-six diesel
I enjoy the simplicity of "Test/Drive". You tell us some details and what you like about it then how it stacks up against the competition. I am waiting to see a review of a car you hate. Do one of the Big Muscle wagon or Chris' dirty Audi. Some of us do want to see more of what the hosts drive themselves.
I understand Drive aims to be an international car channel, therefore please give us the torque figures in Newton meters rather than pound-foot. Thank you.
We'll this was the only Cross Continent review of a car they put out, They are mostly doing American spec cars for American consumers. That's why they are not doing the Metric system.
Well they sdo it all the time, not only in these reviews, they should talk in newton meters and add the fuel consumption in liters/100kms as well, the european way
Matt, Drive is an English language channel. The entire English-speaking world uses ftlbs - including Britain (which is where I am). Newton metres are largely meaningless to me, as are kilometres, etc. The only metric unit I generally use is celsius/centigrade instead of fahrenheit - but I wish everyone would convert to Kelvin!
Matt, NOBODY in the English speaking world uses Nm or l/100km. We all use miles per gallon (it would help if the US used our eight-pint gallons instead of their seven-pint ones!), we all use foot pounds and we all use horsepower - in fact, who the hell uses Kilowatts? I seem to recall the Aussies do, but they're nuts anyway! =P
Isn't there the E Class Bluetec Diesel? and the A6 TDI? Aren't those pretty-much direct competitors? Just saying... entertaining review though, IF the ratings bit at the end is a bit long....
What's that, an american version of X5? Europe have 25d (218hp), 30d (258hp), 40d (313hp) and M50d (381hp). We haven´t had the 35d(286hp) since '09. Strange when they have different names in the USA. Like the BMW 320d (184hp) is called 328d in the USA.
Somehow I lucked into finding a low mileage 2014 535d Xdrive here in the USA at CarMax. I had it shipped and my wife loves it. She wasn’t sure about the diesel, but now she raves about it. Hers is white (yes she is a realtor lol) and it truly is the perfect car. Classy and sure footed for the wet roads in the Pacific Northwest. Her realtor partner was jealous and sold her Mercedes blutec and got a X5 diesel (white). 😅
Not quite 'Chris Harris on Cars' which is a bit odd as the review 'is' actually Chris Harris on cars. Even so another good review (if a' little' soul less). I love big powerful BMW diesels so for me it would definitely win over the petrol equivalent. Though don't be 'downing' Chris Bangle. His designs were challenging yes, but the DNA of which can still be clearly seen running through the whole of the current BMW range.
Personally, I think some of Bangle's designs are still brilliant even today. The E60 most notably is a fine example. I think they were supposedly "challenging" to the rest of the world because of how perfect the E39 was before it. Not to say the E60 is necessarily a better design as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it was simply the evolution of BMW design and was definitely a step in the right direction. It was just a different type of 5 series and everyone was used to the simplicity of the previous design. If BMW debut the car today, it would've probably had a better reception than it did back in 2005. For me, it's one of my favorite looks out of the 5 series' history.
Bangle designed good cars. It's just the last series was iffy. Personally apart from the 7 series I thought all of them looked just fine. 5 Series in particular from his 'controversial' series in fact seems to have aged beautifully.
***** Specifically the 745i (especially the back end) was one of the more "challenging" designs imho. Totally agree on the E60 5 series though, doesn't look like its aged a day!
Don't wanna brag, but we use the 530d wagon as our RPU patrol vehicles. We've had Beemers before, but the new F10/F11 with the 8 speed pulls like nothing I've ever been in before. And at 40 mpg real world, they're nearly twice as fuel efficient as the older T6 AWD V70's, yet are slightly faster when loaded down.
this guy is so good and so passionate at what he does, it really shows through in his work! if chris harris was reviewing toasters i'd fucking watch it :-)
Ward's just listed the 535d engine as 10 best of the year. He did not mention the "regen braking" in this car. It's similar to a hybrid because it can spin a motor & dump the juice in a battery (12 volt in this case). It also has engine stop at red lights, though it doesn't work if AC is turned on, so a rare occurrence. The gauge shows "charge" and "power" so you know when regenerative braking is happening............
this video is for US market.. your driving what is badged in EU as 530d with the twin scroll turbo. EU 535d has the N57Z engine which is the 2-stage setup with sequential turbos, as it has always been on the 35d engines.
This video is about half as long, maybe more, than an equivalent Motor Trend video and you know what? I feel more in tune with this review than the Viacom one, even regarding a car that's relatively mundane.
Owned a 2005 535D for 8 years and had it remapped in the first week by the guys at DMS after reading it was "Laugh Out Loud Fast" in EVO. The stats speak for themselves, it's a serious piece of kit when you want to play; and then with roof rack, bike rack and family of four it's the everyday family car. The best of all worlds with real punch from 80 upwards.. but alas it's no M3 or M5.. you want that you need much more money for running costs and fuel. Men does go sidewards more than CH's did!!!!!
"Audi does not make the big fast diesels??" What is the SQ5 | A6 - A7 BiTurbo Tdi Chris :)) It would be nice to see a honestly review from you of the A6 BiTurbo Tdi. I drive one and I really like it, with some help from MTM.
Hey guys, my dad recently got an F30 330d Xdrive and loves it, but how does say a 535 or 530d compare? He wants the sporty feel but still comfort and class, which is why he's bored of the Mercedes E class, as comfortable and luxurious as it is, just isn't as fun to drive. Cheers.
Dear Chris/Drive, I would only like to point out that Audi does in fact make a diesel competitor. It is the C7A6 3.0 BiTurbo diesel or A6 3.0 BiTDi. It does not come to the US but it is in fact in the size category and certainly qualifies as a big, fast diesel. Keep the quality programming coming.
can i point out that youre saying the rivals dont make big fast diesel but the new audi a6 has 3.0 tdi bi turbo engine which produces 313bhp? and it looks amazing better than the bmw in my opinion
The US-Version 535d is the german 530d, so single turbo I6, whereas the 535d in Europe would be a biturbo. Audi is selling the A6 with a 3.0 BiTurbo with very similar power figures (313HP, 480lb-ft), might be something for a comparison, Chris? :)
Emissions mainly. I know MB has problems with American fuel, and euro cars always seem to have a slightly higher output rating, so it could be average fuel quality which is a concern. To be fair, BMW has dozens of variants on the diesel 5 series across the world based on slight emission differences, where they're 1 or 2 hp down on another model in a different country.
I have heard, but dont nail me on this, that american diesel regulation is different and the injection system has differences.... but dont nail me on this
Masterlostfreaky Diesel regulation is very different, Mercedes common rails having clogging issues due to the fuel quality. Same problem in Russia. Not sure if manufacturers use different injection system in the US, but it makes sense.
I think it is related to the cetane number (equivalent of the octane number but for diesel). In the US, most states impose a minimum cetane number of 40 (see ASTM D975) where in Europe the minimum is 51. I use premium diesel which has cetane number of 60 (Aral in Germany). The higher the cetane number is the smoother and completer the combustion will be, therefore the less the engine pollute (it is a little short cut. there are others parameters). I hope I was clear
Those Diesels have so much torque! I would go for a diesel nowdays in these class becose where i live..its so much cheaper to drive and i love the low rev power! But id go to a audi a6 wagon with the +300hp diesel engine rather than the bmw (becose i live in finland where the awd is a must and like the looks more)... but yes great review chris oneagain!
It does not happen often, but this time I have to say: Poor americans.

Isn't Audi A6 a competitor to the BMW 5series?
this video is for US market.. your driving what is badged in EU as 530d with the twin scroll turbo. EU 535d has the N57Z engine which is the 2-stage setup with sequential turbos, as it has always been on the 35d engines.
+Dragos pirvu Do you know what engine is used in the US market 535d? Is it the regular N57?
yes, its the n57 with either 245hp or 258 depending how old the car is. i guess the 306/313hp 535d couldn't pass the US emissions requirement ..
Hmmmm... I am getting mixed answers. I have a USA 535D 2016 built date of 09/15/2015 and real OEM says its a N57 313PS version.
This video is about half as long, maybe more, than an equivalent Motor Trend video and you know what? I feel more in tune with this review than the Viacom one, even regarding a car that's relatively mundane.
Does the Merc Benz E class bluetec not rival this car? He said there isn't a equivalent in this video. ijs
Not in USA, they only get the small E 250 Bluetec and Audi A6 with the 240hp diesel. So, no not really. Europe have a lot more engines
"Audi does not make the big fast diesels??"
What is the SQ5 | A6 - A7 BiTurbo Tdi Chris :))
It would be nice to see a honestly review from you of the A6 BiTurbo Tdi.
I drive one and I really like it, with some help from MTM.
I take it this is a short series of reviews Chris is doing whilst he's over in the US for a bit?
Hey guys, my dad recently got an F30 330d Xdrive and loves it, but how does say a 535 or 530d compare? He wants the sporty feel but still comfort and class, which is why he's bored of the Mercedes E class, as comfortable and luxurious as it is, just isn't as fun to drive. Cheers.
In the netherlands the Audi A6 is also availeble with 313 hp diesel.
Keep the quality programming coming.
indeed, it even has 309hp. Mercedes also have the E350 cdi? thats got 252hp which is on par with the 530d
I love you guys so much
yay Chris Harris!
Audi A6 3.0 BiTurbo TDI is not the german equivalnet of the 535?
probably not available in the us
No equivalent from the other germans? What about the A6 Bi-Turbo Diesel then? 313hp from a 3l V6 BiTurbo Diesel...
I need to know the song name please
can i point out that youre saying the rivals dont make big fast diesel but the new audi a6 has 3.0 tdi bi turbo engine which produces 313bhp? and it looks amazing better than the bmw in my opinion
What is the name of the soundtrack!?!?
When can we see a tesla model s review ?
The US-Version 535d is the german 530d, so single turbo I6, whereas the 535d in Europe would be a biturbo. Audi is selling the A6 with a 3.0 BiTurbo with very similar power figures (313HP, 480lb-ft), might be something for a comparison, Chris? :)
Why no drifting in the video???
2:17 Audi A6 has 3.0 TDI BiTurbo which makes over 300hp in Europe don't they?
Why the large performance gap between American and European versions? Because of the low octane rating of American fuel? Or emissions?
I thought Audi mate A6 bi turbo 3.0? And an A4 3.0 tdi?
8 speed is getting super!
Those Diesels have so much torque! I would go for a diesel nowdays in these class becose where i live..its so much cheaper to drive and i love the low rev power! But id go to a audi a6 wagon with the +300hp diesel engine rather than the bmw (becose i live in finland where the awd is a must and like the looks more)... but yes great review chris oneagain!
chris, why you call it a sedan? its a saloon damn it!
Very good, but too short!!
