LUTs (Look up tables) can help transform your footage from boring to cinematic in a single click. They can also be used in camera to give you a better idea of what your finished product will look like.
With the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and 6K, shooting RAW can sometimes be difficult when monitoring. Setting white balance when your screen looks desaturated is tough, fortunately you can add LUTs to your camera for viewing.
I’ll show you how to quickly add a LUT to your BMPCC4K so you can get back out filming!
Subscribed! Thanks. I shoot with the Blackmagic 6k Pro and this is the first LUT I've ever installed, on any camera, EVER! lol and its exactly what I needed. Something to give me a more accurate representation of what the footage looks like.
Awesome! I’m glad to hear it.
Keep up the good work man! RUclips is hard and it takes a LOT of work but your videos are good. Keep at it at you'll gain tracking quickly, your videos and quality show the work you've put in. New Sub man, I'll be watching!
I appreciate that a lot! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Much respect for this man. I just got my first camera bmp6k and I've been dying to have it.
Thank you. Can't wait to try the monitor LUT. Please continue to make more content for me to smash the LIKE button.
Smash that like button! Lol thanks buddy. Let me know how it works for you.
awesome thx...i hv the 4k so now i am loading LUTS for work....neat...super thxx
Thanks for the LUT, I"ll give it a shot. First impression is a good contrast for the screen.
Should help with contrast and saturation! 👍🏼
Thanks for awesome monitor LUT. There is an option in record tab to apply LUT in file. I think this LUT is also good to record film with this LUT baked in.
I never bake in LUTs just because I like to have max control when editing. But I can see how it would save someone time! I appreciate the confidence in the LUT to be used in that way!
Love you! thanks a bunch for the LUT, this saved me good time!
I’m glad it helped!
Thanks, man! 😊
Can you bake streight in camera a LUT, I mean, Is There something like Fuji film simulation or Sony creative look insieme the camera ?
Can you send the LUT image via HDMI to an external monitor while keeping the camera LCD ungraded? Or vice-versa?
Yes, Inside your settings (three horizontal lines button) go over to monitor, and then either select or deselect "Display 3D LUT" on your LCD tab, and do the opposite on your "HDMI" tab. This way one will display the LUT and the other will not. Note: When you press the "function 2" button on top of the camera, it will reset this and make the LUT active or passive on both sources.
Danke für die free-luts.
Die videos sehen einfach krass.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This is awesome, thanks so much for your helpful tutorial and the LUT! Def subbed after this! Keep up the great work.
Did you use this LUT for the example in the video/the video itself?
I appreciate it! Let me know how the LUT works for you!
No, I only use that one for my monitor. I do my own normalizing and color corrections more specific to the particular shot in post.
So co, Amazing
thanks!
My pleasure.
thanks for this ,and thanks for the lut
My pleasure!
1:57 thank me later. guys. Also thank Bo Gaines for the video with a Like Smash
Thank you!
Thanks, Bo, that download helped me a bunch...
Thanks for saying that. I appreciate it! I have more free LUTs on other videos if you’re interested!
@@BoGaines I will check it out. Thanks, I looked at your site and saw some for sale. I just got the camera and I am trying to figure it out and this helped me a bunch.
I love my 4K. It’s a great camera for cinema style work.
@@BoGaines I'm green and just trying to figure it out! I'm thankful for your help...
No problem! Let me know if you have any specific questions, I’m happy to help.
Thanks for the How To and Free Lut
My pleasure! More free stuff coming soon!
Thanks, the LUT works great!!!!!!
Awesome thanks! I have more free LUTs on other videos 👀
Thanks for this video! BTW, do you expose with the lut loaded in camera as a reference?
That's a great question. The LUT helps you visualize what your color-corrected footage will look like. But since every project has different lighting and setup, it's not ideal to trust the LUT to give you the most accurate exposure feedback. I use the built-in histogram for under and over-exposure. And I use the built-in false color to expose for skin tones.
Can you have the footage autoload the lut in davinchi? Id like to skip the step of adding the lut in editing (same location, same lighting always)
Great video! Downloading the LUT didn't work for me, my BM isn't recognizing the LUT on the SD card once I out it in the camera. Have you any suggestions on what I should double check, so that it will work?
This is great, very helpful!
Awesomeness
Thank you!!
Was thinking of using an external monitor like a ninja v or Shonobi. Can i simply add the LUT to the monitor instead of the camera screen as i am building a rig so easy to view. Also will it be easy to also turn on and off like the camera screen?
Very helpful. Thank you.
Great. Thanks!
Might be a stupid question: does the card have to stay in the camera? Or can you take it out once the lut imports?
Not stupid at all. Once the LUT is loaded, it’s stored in the camera, so you can take the card out! 👍🏼
Thanks a lot , great video, you have a new subscriber man !!!
Thanks so much! 🙌🏼
@@BoGaines you are welcome 😊!!
Simple and straight to the point 👉
Hello! I bought the luts package on your website, however, when I try to import them into my Studio Pro 4k, it doesn't matter. What will be the problem? The one you made available here in the link, normally matters... Thank you
Amazing video thanks for the info.
Awesome! Thank you! 🙌🏼
Hello very nice tutorial. I'm waiting for receiving next week my 4K !!!! A question if you select LUT during recording does file output with LUT correction ? Tks
Great question. The LUT or Exposure settings are not “baked in” so you can add and remove them without effecting your footage. There is a setting in the non-Raw formats that allow you to have the LUT come through in the output though.
VERY THANKS SR
Thanks the LUT works great! Some "cube" lut files don't work on the BMPCC4K do you know why some work and some don't?
Interesting question, I haven't run into any LUTs that don't work so far, but I mostly use my own so I know all of them are the same exact format. I'll have to look into why some wouldn't work.
@Eagle Eye Visions Geert Marissen, I have done some research on this and tested on different .cube LUTs on my camera. What I have noticed is that the smaller 17X17 or 33X33 sized LUTs work just fine, while the camera won't recognize the larger 65X65 LUT. So I would say that either the LUTs that aren't working are either formatted wrong, or they are a file too large for the camera to accept.
@@BoGaines how to do change the LUT's that are too big?
Could i buy just microsd with sd adapter, just for lut import? Because i record only on ssd.
Will these work on theursa mini pro?
Thanks a million.
My pleasure!
Thanks for this video man, very informative and cut to the chase. I have a BMPCC 4k and on the LUTs screen, there are a few tabs to click on; Pocket 4k to Film EX video, Pocket 4k Film to Rec 2020 Hybrid Log Gamma, Pocket 4k to Film, etc. Can you help explain this to me? Are these preset LUTs that came with the camera? I feel like, when I select one Im not confident as to what it means and what it does when I go into DaVinci and begin color grading. If I have one of these selected do I tell DaVinci when I select a clip and begin color grading that I filmed with one of these? thank you
Those are exactly what you said. They’re preset LUTs that help you monitor what you’re filming. If you shoot RAW it will import with no LUT attached. If you shoot in the other modes, you have an option to “bake in” the LUT, meaning the footage would have the LUT applied.
If you shoot RAW, your footage will pull onto the computer with no LUTs applied. It doesn’t affect the footage in any way. It only shows the LUT on your camera’s monitor screen.
@@BoGaines awesome thanks! The function 2 button made sense when you pressed it. It just shows you what it can look like in post
That’s all I shoot is raw.
Thanks again
great stuff
Thank you!
Love your videos 👌
Thank you!
No problem! I have more free LUTs on other videos! 🙌🏼
Great !
Thank you!
Camera says ‘can’t import lut’ no idea why, do you?
Can you film a lut baked prores? (Taking advantage of the raw data, like an in camera raw grading)
Hey man i have a problem with audio on Davinci Resolve. It only renders at 192 KB/s when on H.264. im trying to render at 320 KB/s. the only other option for higher quality audio is if i switch audio codec to Linear PCM. I konw its unrelated to the video but i cant find the answer anywhere
What’s the file extension for these luts
Is it thesame Lut you add to your editing software that works in the camera?
The extension is .cube - and yes, the same LUT can be used in an editing program. The difference would be, you add LUTs after normalizing your footage, so if you put typical LUTs on your RAW or Log camera, it’ll still be pretty bland.
Can you load the same LUT into your post software like Adobe Premier Pro?
Yes you can. It may be slightly too saturated and too much contrast. But if you pull the intensity down to 70% or so, it probably would do well.
Simple and easy video without wasting any time, thank you! Just one question, when you take out the card or disconnect the ssd, does that take away the lit as well? Or is it imported into the camera and will stay there? Thank you!
Once it’s imported, it’s in your camera, you can remove the card.
How do I deselect a lut?
Does it have to be a specific LUT to import it? Because I tried to import some of my favorite LUTs from the Triune Cinematic LUT pack and my BMPCC4K wouldn't import it.
Hey there. So.. the only Cube LUTs I’ve seen that it wouldn’t accept for me, are because they are too large. 65 point for example is too large. My suggestion, is to upload a RAW sample clip divinci resolve, apply your desired LUT then create your own 33 point Cube LUT, and upload that to your camera! Creating a LUT is pretty simple in Resolve. I have another video on my page for how to do that. But if you have issues let me know!
If an external monitor is connected , does thre lut pass through to the monitor as well?
It can. There are setting for the camera’s screen and the HDMI output.
@@BoGaines thanks for the reply man
For some reason this doesnt work for me, ive tried everything..
Hi, are you trying it with the LUT I have linked in this video, or with a different LUT?
Does HDMI output have LUT applied or not?
You have the option to add LUT, zebras, focus peaking or a couple other things in the settings. The HDMI and your camera screen can have different things selected.
hi! how can i save the file into my SD card? it is a ".Cube" file but my Mac does not open it and doesn't allow me to move it to the SD card. Im pretty new with this camera and its software
Off the top of my head, these would be some things I would check: make sure there is space on the SD card. Make sure the little tab on the side of the SD card isn’t clicked over to “lock” it. If it’s neither of those things, pull all the files off the card, make sure you have all the files backed up somewhere, then re-format the card. This will wipe it clean, so you would lose all files on the card. But I haven’t had a card yet that wouldn’t hold a .cube file.
Any update?
@@BoGaines no man, mi Mac does not open the file therefore it doesn’t let move it into the SD card
Mac’s won’t actually open a .cube. It has to be opened in a program that can read them- such as a video editing program or the BlackMagic camera.
Did the zip file download okay for you from that link?
Some luts.. don't appear in my lut option why is that?
I’ve had people mention this before. The only thing I can think of is the format is wrong. The BMPCC accepts 3D LUTs ups to 17X17. So if it’s a different format or a larger LUT, like the 33X33 it won’t read it.
Hey @Bo Gaines - Do you find that those sandisk 128gb cards like the one that you're using to import the LUT are good enough to be shooting 12:1 BRAW?
Yes I do. You’ll get roughly 80 minutes on it. I also have a 256 gig. And the only issues I’ve had, is sometimes as the cards get full, they’ll start dropping frames. But I think that’s only happened to me while shooting 60 fps.
@@BoGaines Sweet. I guess in that case it would have no issues with ProRes at all would it? I have a bunch of the 64GB versions of that card and just order a 128GB Lexar UH-II card but my BMPCC 4K isn't due until tomorrow haha.
I’ve used as small as a 16 gig with the 12:1 4K Raw. As long as your card is a class 10, and U3, it should be good. Be careful with ProRes. The HQ, 422, and even the LT are actually larger files than the 12:1 Raw. That’s what makes this compression so great.
@@BoGaines ahhh great tip! Thanks, man. I suppose if I'm not shooting braw then I may as well have stuck with my Panasonic's haha
I love this camera because of its Raw. It’s so good for that, but the ProRes is underwhelming. This camera has better colors than my old Sony a6300, but not as good as Canon’s skin tones. I haven’t used a Panasonic. But color correcting Raw is fun. And I can get 150 minutes with my 256 gig card.
How do I create my own lut?
I’m about to post a video for this as well. Are you operating in Divinci Resolve?
Hey. if I put the LUT in the camera during the shooting, then when transferring this LUT to DAVINCI, the paint will be transferred along with the video and it will not be possible to remove it?
If you’re shooting RAW in camera, the LUT is not baked in. Meaning it only shows the LUT in camera, and when you import the footage into your editing software, you still have your RAW clips.
Bo Gaines if I press the camera button, the Picture is color, according to the instructions it is written that you can shoot a video with LUT and a color picture will be transferred to Davinci. Can I turn off the color there?
There are options while shooting PRORES that allows you to “bake in” the color (film with the LUT as part of the footage) then you won’t be able to take it off later. But when shooting RAW the footage will always be unedited whether you have the LUT active while filming or not. RAW footage will import RAW.
Bo DEAR, I DO NOT AGREE TO YOU. I ONLY OPEN THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ITS CAMERA AND THERE IS JUST INDICATED THAT IF IN THE CAMERA MENU 🎥 SPECIFY a video shooting with a built-in LUT, then when transferring to DAVINCI - a colorful picture can be seen in Davinci - all the color information that you can just save enable and disable in Davinci. Take the instructions yourself and read for your Blackmagic 6 K camera
I’m sorry that you disagree, but I’ve used this camera for nearly a year and not once have I baked in a LUT to the actual footage. I only use it to monitor what I shoot, then I do my color grading to the RAW footage.
Merciful God in heaven, how I HATE this stupid trend of chipmunk voice effects on music tracks vomiting all over the internet lately.
Other than that, very nice tut.
what are your settings and white balance when you use these luts?
My white balance, ISO, shutter speed and aperture, all vary depending on the lighting of your scene. You can use auto white balance if you have anything white to place in front of the camera, or you can use the built in white balance “scenes” and find the one that looks the most natural. If you’re shooting RAW, you can change the white balance in post to be more accurate. As far as the lighting aspect (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) I try to keep the ISO at 400 if I can, shutter speed at double your frame rate (24fps = 48 shutter speed) and the aperture of the lens is set for the look you want, depending on how blurry you want the background. Then bring in lighting to get your scene as bright as you want without overexposure. The LUT will work with any scene, because it has a natural look that just makes your viewing monitor more “real to life”. Hope this helps!
@@BoGaines yes thank you. but when i tried the lut it's very contrasty and it didn't look and feel natural like what you did in the video above so i thought i was doing something wrong with my Wb.
Are you using it on your Blackmagic camera?
@@BoGaines yes the pocket 4k
@@BoGaines i also applied it on davinci resolve just to see.
