I really think sometimes that Katey Sagal was even funnier than Ed O'Neil in this show, although that shouldn't even be possible lol. But the chemistry between them and indeed ALL the actors in this show was just phenomenal.

The Bundys that is. Marcy was just accepted by Al because she was friends with Peggy and Al with her husbands, also she was a great target for his jokes, but he always hated her, no exception.

It wasn't controversial when I watched in the UK back then. It was broadcast late at night, so maybe that had something to do with it. But it wasn't really considered that controversial, just a funny sitcom back then.
The 60s had Mary Tyler Moore, the 70s had All In the Family, and the 80s and 90s had Married With Children. That was about the end of controversial TV sitcoms. At least successful ones.
