    Lark from Grayfruit here, I made all those Harry Potter videos. Played the fourth one many years ago and even when I was a kid I remember it being so disappointing swapping from the open world format, and knowing that it felt way cheaper without understanding at the time. I was sorta wondering if it was worth checking out again. Loved that right away you said "Not buggy enough to be fun in that regard". RIP that's clearly the best part. I also had 4 on the gameboy and Mad Eye said "Damn" and I was like "oh shit this is serious business don't tell my mom".

    Hey Patrician, I really recommend playing Half Blood Prince, it’s basically Order of the Phoenix except with almost everything improved, the camera was changed, story better implemented, and had a lot of additional features, including quidditch, which you can now walk to. It seemed to be OOTP except the basic formula they tried was now more “complete.”
    I was really captured by OOTP’s rendition of Hogwarts when I rented it from blockbuster as a kid, and tried to revisit that by buying HBP later. When I finally tried OOTP again, I was disappointed by how stripped down the place felt, and that the game was over in 2 hours.
    (Edit) Then again, my memory may fail me, and I can’t think of HBP letting the player use spells to solve as many environmental puzzles around the grounds, and instead replaces much of that gameplay time with new and more repetitive mini games such as the potions class.

    • @naruto123407
      @naruto123407 Год назад +1

      I was going to say that I enjoyed the usage of spells to solve castle puzzles over potions. AS much as I LOVE potions class. Though Quidditch gameplay was awesome.

  • @TheJesterInYellow
    @TheJesterInYellow Год назад +9

    Harry Potter has always been a nemesis of a series to me. Ever since I was a kid I had this morbid fascination with how poorly written it is, and how unbelievably little anyone actually uses magic to solve problems in the damn thing, or how it rare it is that any character considers using more than one spell per scene. At the same time I enjoy the atmosphere, so I get why everyone else loves it, and occasionally the prose in the books could be good and the characters enjoyable, but it's always been such a snafu that I struggle to think of a way it *could* work on any level other than "cool area design". Video games suffer from Harry Potter's problems more than most because in a video game, the player has to have control, and when the player has control they realize how many solutions exist in this world that nobody thinks of and you arbitrarily cannot use for any problems. In a world where magic of any conceivable type exists and can be used trivially easily, it's infuriating to be forever confined to a context button that occasionally pops up. Acting like an authentic Harry Potter character is one of the least fun experiences imaginable.

    Goblet of Fire was such a mess on PC. On top of regular issues of worlds being being backwards and not being able to control the camera at all so you often had to interact with things blind, keyboard controls were incredibly broken. Wingardium Leviosa was wonky back on windows xp, but when I tried to play the game few years back on win7, they just refused to work. Keys would not register, keys would stop registering when I still held them, keys would stop registering and then register again several times when I held them for few seconds... It made than spell completely unsuable, not to mention arrow keys going from 0 to 60 made controling levitating objects impossible (when cast button actually worked that is).
    One thing I do have to admit however is that ambiance and mood of the levels were fantastic, especially sound design. Distant echoes, sounds of wind, environmental objects being interacted with... it all came together quite beautifully.

    Wonder why no one has ever made an attempt at a high-production AAA game based on all the books and movies, all packaged into one continuous game. Make it be like 60-hours-long, diving into every aspect of the books and movies that exists so you can experience the definite version of the story. It would sell, surely, but just take time.

    Hey man, always been passionate about these old Harry Potter games specially all the versions of the first three games. My favourites being the PS1 versions, followed by the PC and the PS2 versions. The version of Philosopher's Stone to Gameboy Advance also holds a special place in my heart since it was the only one I ever phisicaly owned for the Gameboy and only later did I play the others of that platform.
    Anyways, I just found your channel through these videos and really liked them. I like to hear your opinion on them and, having played Hogwarts Legacy, totally agree with the prediction you did on your first Harry Potter PC reviews. Unfortunately they did not capture the feeling of the old games nor did they come close to the atmosphere of the old games. Huge missed oportunity imo but nonetheless a great start to maybe future games. I do not forgive them for not including the Wizard Collector Cards tho, since they are arguably some of the best collectibles on the gaming industry that are funny, expand the universe, fun to collect and make for a good excuse to have a lot of secret areas in your game.
    Also, I know I am bit late but would love to know where you got that image of the Wizard Card from the first game. I have been trying to know where I could find HD versions of them but did not find any. It would be great to know

    Actually, I remember getting Order of the Phoenix as a gift for Christmas. In a box. You see, I do not know if this was the case in other countries, but in Poland, EA had this series called 'EA Classics' where they rereleased some of their older titles for a relatively reasonable price, and while they had soome of the shovelware, I remember having Mass Effect 2 and 3, Crysis, Dragon Age, and a bunch of other good games (actually, there were many similiar series by different publishers, and I am certain they - unlike the EA one - still come out today.)

      We had Sony do that here in the UK, same with M$ and Nintendo.
      Oddly, never 3rd party guys, wonder why they had different approaches between our locations?

    • @tythus654
      @tythus654 Год назад

      @@Canadish My guess is that it's due to Poland being a... well, let's just say, a bit behind, economically and technologically, so these rereleases would have a higher chance of being successful than they would be in the west, where buying new games is simply more affordable - in the sense that Canadian (I think I am safe to assume you are Canadian lol) minimum wage is roughly three times higher than Poland's, but the games on release cost the same, so fewer people would buy those games on release; this also translates to the fact that fewer people will have adequate hardware on release to run these games - meaning that selling somewhat older stuff relatively cheaply has a much larger amount of people who would be interested in buying these where they couldn't do so on release date.

    I’m of that generation that was growing up along with Harry Potter’s main characters so this franchise is very dear to me. I loved the first three games, played them on PC as they released. When I started playing Goblet of fire I was so disappointed with changes made to that one that I immediately uninstalled it and never played a HP game again. Looking forward to Hogwarts Legacy with cautious optimism.

    I can tell you that the thing you miss out on the most from skipping to play co-op, is that you have actual brains (or at least a person who can listen when you speak) behind the control of what would've been AI otherwise.
    Seriously, my one other memory besides HP4 being shit was that the AI was moronic, with sections of the game needing multiple people to cast the same spells to help power through, the AI would decide that it doesn't want to help you cast, at random. Or it would help you cast, only to stop before you've gotten any progress.
    And still, it's better than the two Deathly Hallows games, the second of which I didn't even bother trying to play after my frustrations with the first one.
