  • This kayak just won "Best Of Show" At ICAST 2020, let's look at why! When we heard the Sportsman Autopilot 136 had an Ultrex trolling motor and could "spot lock" to hold position so we didn't have to paddle the kayak constantly, we knew we had to have it! Come along as Tim takes it for a spin on the water, looks at the features, and shows how to operate the motor.
This is a top of the line kayak! Its incredibly stable, has room to stand, walk, and enough stability to fish from virtually any position. We've had it out in big waves, heavy winds, and have had the opportunity to catch some great big bass from these boats. If you're upgrading to a larger kayak or considering adding a trolling motor to an existing kayak, you should give this a look.
The 13'6" version (136) retails for $3999 while the smaller 12' version (120) retails for $3799. This is a serious investment for an entry level kayaker but is a no brainer for a bass angler coming down from a bass boat. As bass boat angler's we've already fallen in love with the spot lock feature of the Ultrex trolling motor and know there is no going back. Having this same feature in a kayak gives us the ability to go farther, stay more stable in rough water, and most importantly, focus on the fishing instead of the positioning.
Below you'll find links to the kayak as well as some of our favorite kayak accessories. The kayak link will take you directly to the manufacturer's website (Old Town), while the accessory links will go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of the items.

I love OldTown and I’ve had an OldTown canoe since 2001 and now I’m 70 years old and this looks like such an extraordinary setup. I’m definitely going to figure how to make this work in my fishing life here in Raleigh North Carolina. There’s so many wonderful lakes, and I am 2 hours from the inner coastal and so glad it works in saltwater 😜🎣👍🎣 thanks Tim as always you help eliminate any confusion in the market place and I’ve trusted Tactical Bassin for over 4 years and I am so happy for your success 🙌💯🎣🍀🎣

I opted for Nucanoe personally, they were in the bow mounted game before anyone else. All their kayaks also have a flat transom too so you can put a power pole or even an outboard motor on the back. Their open deck design is what sold me though.

I'm really happy this technology is working its way into the kayak fisherman market. This is a huge leap forward for being efficient on the water. I've gotten pretty good at anchors and drift socks with a trolley system, but I would prefer to leave that behind. Hobie's fins are pretty good at locking onto a spot manually, but then you cannot stand up and fish, so you are less efficient. This market is progressing nicely and the competition will step up and innovate to be competitive.

I just ordered the Old Town Autopilot 136 and I think it will be a game changer for me! I do a lot of fishing out of my current kayak and I love it. I really hope to see you guys make some more kayak videos with these kayaks. Maybe you can cover some techniques that you like to try while on kayaks. Maybe you could cover techniques you would use for sit down only kayaks for people that don't have a kayak they can stand on. That was one of the biggest learning curves for me in my kayak. It's not stable enough to stand in and the seat it real close to water level so there are definitely techniques I can't use on it like flipping. Anyway I love seeing the videos where you guys go on and on about every detail in your gear and techniques with links to everything. It would be awesome to see more yak vids though.

    • @sardogdad
      @sardogdad 4 года назад +6

I was on the water at 5:45am and pulled up to the ramp at a local lake near Fort Worth at 3:30 that afternoon. Motor was engaged the entire time. I ran at full speed some, regular trolling speed some (working in and out of docks, cover, shoreline, etc), and used spot lock quite a bit to cover Lilly Pad fields and other areas. The wind was out of the south at 6 to 8 mph and the lake runs primarily north to south, so I figure half the time I was going against the wind. I used a 100ah lead acid battery and usually when they start to weaken they do so slowly, so you'll see a drop in performance. I never got to that point. I came back to the ramp on an east to west trajectory, with a lot of boat chop, and I was still hitting 4 mph. I really want to get the lithium battery, because that lead acid battery is heavy and I'm an old guy.

Too bad there's so much negativity in these comments. I'm betting that those did say why not just buy a real boat or words to that effect have never tried a kayak. I gave up all my powered boats once I had a kayak for a short period of time. I have an Old Town Predator PDL which is the pedal version of The Predator 13. It is an excellent rough water Open Water boat. I've had it in the ocean with four and five foot swells and I've had it on places like Lake George with the wind ripping from the south stirring Up 3 and 4 ft waves with an occasional one over the bow. Very stable boat very comfortable for this 71 year old fishing fool!

I'd like to see him actually put that thing into the water. How do you transport it: trailer, bed of your pickup? How do you launch it when there is no sweet grassy knoll to launch from? Can you lift it? 'm 71 also and I will not be lifting 158 lbs. of kayak.

    • @mikefurness1598
      @mikefurness1598 3 года назад

@@daveyJ213 David I slide the boat in and out of the back of my truck on a Bed Extender without much trouble and now I'm 72. The biggest thing is getting the bow up on the bar of the Bed Extender or getting it off the bar when unloading. When I move the boat either in or out of the truck it's empty. No drive no rods reels and Tackle. It's just the boat and the seat and a couple items in the bow hatch all told probably 95 lbs. I try to launch right at the water and once it's in the water I move it off to the side of the ramp get all my gear out of the truck park the truck and then load the gear into the kayak. All told my truck is on the boat landing about three or four minutes. I have yet to lose any gear after leaving kayak and gear at the launch parking the truck and walking back. I think most fishermen are honest whether they be kayakers or boaters. You can do it!

I got into kayak fishing and got myself a Hobie Pro Angler 14. My regular ride is a Nitro ZV18. At some point, these big kayaks start blurring the lines between a kayak and an actual boat, except the kayak has you tippy toeing around the deck. If you’re going to kayak fish, go with a real kayak. My Hobie handles like a freaking barge, it’s a pain in the ass to load and unload -even with a trailer. I also have a 10 foot Ascent and have way more fun in that and can get to some pretty skinny water. If you’re dropping 4-5 grand, set up a John boat.

Informative video. Maybe in a sequel video, you can make an assessment on the effectiveness on paddling the kayak with the motor out of the water (just in case there is a malfunction to the motor or battery)
You can use the word revolutionary or transformative in place of game changer.

Two questions, 1) Can you fish a full day on one battery? (I know that's a tough question) 2) Where and what brand of trailer are you using to transport that kayak? Thank You!

@taticalbassin, could you guys do a video based on how to catch bass in abnormally warm and low water. I am unsure how your lakes and stuff are but up here in the New England the water is anywhere between 83 to 86 where I fish. Which is VERY warm for this time of year in some places 10 degrees warmer than normal. And on top of that alot of the water in places I fish is between 6-10 feet lower than normal and that's not including some of the reservoirs I fish. I thought the fish would be ultra aggressive but I have been proven wrong as of late and would like some tips on baits and stuff to use during this time. I've done both power and finesse, cranked deep mussel beds and flipped the heaviest of cover but usually get one or two fish on 8 hours fishing.
    Thanks!

Alright so I’m gonna ask for any bodies advice. I go dock light fishing at night during the summer. We can find decent lights where you can see the bass swimming around. I have caught one striper on a crankbait and have had bad luck ever since. Any advice?

He forgot to mention the fact that you can record your tracks.... Push a button and the kayak will take you back to your launch point or marked waypoints.... Sit back and drink a cold one on the way back like it's on autopilot 😉

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this yak. I'm in the market for a big, stable, engine powered yak to fish in a variety of waters from ponds, to larger lakes in inshore salt water. I noticed that this video is a couple of years old, and I wanted to ask if you have any other yaks that you would consider along side this one? I'm appreciative of any tips. THank you!

I am very curious about battery life and what kind of range you can fish. Until you experience what a Solix can do with this trolling motor you just don’t know its capabilities . It takes a very technical fisherman to understand how to fish a fish finder/trolling motor and gps spotlock all your fishing holes. To experience this fully you will have to spend about 7,000.00 by the time you buy fish finder, lithium battery and connect everything. It is definitely limited by cost, but if you don’t have room for a boat, want to avoid boat maintenance, and have the money, this is not a bad idea. You must take into consideration range of battery and whether or not the wiring and trolling motor are water proof enough to avoid rough water. You may have to wait until batteries are good enough to run all day and the saltwater version comes out.

Any info on the trolling motor when hitting a log etc. does it pop up and you have to set it back down with the rope you pull?? Or U just take the hit and move on? That’s my biggest concern

    Wow, Wow, Ow,
I was pretty stoked at first, but wait, there’s no I-Pilot Link available.
So… you can’t use Humminbird network sonar. Price/Point thing?
To me anyway, if I was going to go this way with a yak, I’d want it
with I-Pilot Link and its much better features set.
After all, the list price is about $800. bucks cheaper than a Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14 360.
Maybe Johnson Outdoors (Old Town, Minn Kota, Humminbird, etc.) will wince when they
    start seeing
Lowrance or Garmin heads installed, and offer I-Pilot Link next year.
But I wouldn’t bet on an Upgrade Path being offered.
Just a side note, I’ve been getting about 20-30 percent more run time on my Minn Kota
motors after changing to three blade props. (Top speed is only about .2-.3 mph faster than 2 blade).
Love to see an In-Depth Kayak comparison test someday.. (going after Stripers maybe?)
Glad to see you back on Clear Lake, you guys are the best on RUclips.

Yes to all the above. We've launched them from grassy Knolls, steep drops, docks, boat ramps, and muddy creek banks. They're heavy but not unmanageable.

No it does not - you can run your trolling motor outside of the water. It's not like an outboard that needs a water intake.
