Thank you for the like on my other reply! I love your videos; it's good to see another young man being a truck driver! I'm 27 btw. Your cabin is much bigger than mine, i'd really like to try american trucks one day...who knows if i will...😁😁
Wow they made you come back the next day just to drop it in a spot
@@209jar I was surprised myself I’m from a surrounding town right near that truck stop he went to and the neighbors and other businesses are typically cool and friendly. I also know where a lot of their docks are and I’m very unsure with the place that he dropped off the trailer slightly.
I've watched about a dozen of your vids. I think you're a super young man. Here's a thought:
it seems as though dealing with personnel is perhaps the major hassle (as with these jagoffs).
You might consider including some of the interactions you have with yard check-ins et al. No doubt
there are some very difficult peeps with which you have to contend.
Love how you keep from getting extremely angry...quality many of us don't have.

Hi guys the upcoming Tesla 18 wheeler truck can accelerate up a 6 % incline but I wonder how it runs down hill 6% with no engine brakes. Anybody know?
@@again5162 The Tesla's have regenerative braking which recharges the battery as the vehicle rolls from the wheels, this slows down the vehicle. It's basically like an engine break for Tesla's.
@@again5162 an EV have a much stronger "engine break" called regen. Charging the battery while going downhill is free mileage of "fule".

I’m from Pendleton Oregon and recognized your trip right away. Spent my whole life around going up and down them mountains and have heard and seen some of the worst accidents. Awesome to see an outsiders perspective. Glad you had a safe trip!
Thats why they call it dead mans pass. But im pretty sure its cabbage hill.
There is a quote. Never go faster in a downhill than what you can go up
I’ve driven all the western interstates mountains and a bunch on old US routes. Any can be dangerous if you don’t drive right, but the most challenging roads are in the Appalachian mountains of Ky, Va, and West Va coalfields. We used to gross 160,000 + on very steep and narrow mountain roads. Many temporary roads at strip mines were so steep that a road grader would have to push you up to the coal pit, then you come back off on your own. I’d heard about the western passes and when I left the coalfields to go over the road I found them all to be a piece of cake compared to my coal hauling days.
Well, you certainly went down Cabbage Patch faster than I ever did, but then my company was too cheap to put Jake brakes in our trucks. Still, Cabbage is the easiest pass through the Cascades, so don't get complacent. If you end up going back over Snoqualmie or Donner, prepare yourself for some REAL mountains. And, if you end up having to hang iron to get over, please practice putting your chains on BEFORE you hit the pass. Sitting on the side of the road in a 34° wet rain/snow storm trying to figure out how tire chains work will be a MISERABLE experience.
My jakes failed coming down snoqualmie grossed at 130k that was fun. Glad it wasn’t winter though
I agree. I’ve gone down Cabbage hill with a load of cattle at 108,000 gross. I rarely went over 45 until I got closer to the bottom of the hill. You also need to watch out for Oregon highway patrol at the bottom of Cabbage hill close to Pendleton Oregon.
No jake brake equals disaster if it’s to long a grade…. In which case pull her over and shut her down….
@@preppertrucker5736 While jakes help, aren’t to be relied on. I’ve had them fail twice, being grossed at 130k I was already going slow enough before I even started down the pass. First truck I drove for about 4 years had no jakes, and I live in mountainous western states. Went over cabbage, 4th of July, vail and others with that truck. I was taught to not rely on the jakes, especially on these newer trucks that aren’t mechanical engines.
@@preppertrucker5736 not really, I did donner and cabbage with no Jake fully loaded several times. You check those breaks before you go down, make sure they're adjusted correctly and choose the right gear at the right speed according to your weight and it's not a big issue... unless you rush it, then you could be screwed. Typical 80k is not a big deal on a 6% grade.
Great video Alex! I remember driving to Idaho Falls, ID for school. The snow was coming down, all the tractors were using lower gear as needed, my pickup was in the left lane no problem.
Fast forward 2 weeks, I went to see Jackson Hole, come to find out, that road was only 2 lanes. I was driving in the middle!!
Other note, the engine brake (used to be called a JAKE BRAKE) using the transmission engaged to the engine to slow down the tractor, so you don't burn up your brake pads. As for the % grade signs, they tell you how steep it is. Higher the number, higher the grade you climb and decend. Wait till you knock out 11 or 14%, that is nuts.
If you have seen those runaway ramps on the downhill, those are for drivers that can't stop because of one reason or the other.
Ok, down off my soapbox.
This time of year. You do not wish be out in North Western USA. Ice, Snow, Wind & Very Cold. And you stay parked up in TK stops due to bad roads.
Yup. They shutdown I think i80 in Wyoming while I was there. I ended up waiting to drive until the next day. They said it was too windy. 45mph winds
Because it’s not raining, snowing, windy, cold or icy anywhere else in the country right now? You need to start participating in life instead of living vicariously through others.
P.S. In the US, it’s hot in the majority of the country during the summer, too.
I'm waiting until he finds out what the Santa Anna winds are, that's always fun
Little Tip. It's much better going down a very steep hill a little slow than going down way too fast. I am on I-64 Sandstone Mt. Between Beckley & Lewisburg WV a lot. If 1 week don't go by without myself seeing hot smoking brakes coming off a semi trailer it's amazing. Hill got spot about 1/3 way down it gets steeper & fool a lot of drivers.
@@OlinKreutzRules what a weird comment
Good job Alex, trick to mountain driving, slow and steady, steady on the throttle, steady on the brakes, no harsh stopping , especially on snow and ice. If the roads are snow covered, limit the use of the Jake Brake.
You can also flash your tail lights to let another trucker know to pass you. It’s a well known trucker communication in the trucker world. ❤

Alex, I'm a great fan of yours and I'm glad you started making full length videos. Good luck in your trucking career.
Alex, our engine brakes are similar to DYNAMIC BRAKES on the locomotives I used to run. On the Maine Central Mountain Division, they were a life saver in winter. Just a little firsthand info for you.
Interstate 84 is one of the most beautiful highways in the U.S. SOOOOO happy you got to drive on Deadman's Pass!
I used to drive down Cabbage Hill in Oregon when I lived up there so it was cool watching as you descended down out of the fog to the High plain below. Good memories
Alex conquered Cabbage! Good job young man… enjoy your trip . That Columbia River Gorge is amazing too.
Awesome video. I remember that down hill ride very well. Alex one way to remember the direction you go with landing gear and you may already know this, however if your picking up trailer you go with the truck and if your dropping trailer you crank toward back of trailer or right.
I watch every one of your videos and you finally made it out to my neck of the woods! Oh mah gash!!!! Hope you enjoyed your time in Oregon!
U are right and I hope that I'm doing it in the spring. Good luck and be safe 👍🙏😇
Cool Video!
I recommend a tire pressure tread depth gauge. I pull double & triple trailers & I got popped at a weight station in Colorado and ever since that incident I carry a pressure gauge and tread gauge. Saved my A**
We live in Southern Oregon...im a truck driver here...I drove to Portland yesterday. Drive safe out there.
Oregon is one of my favorite states to go to. If you ever go to Washington state. Stop at the TA or pilot over by the bridge of the gods it is beautiful. I took a 34 hour there and just went hiking.
Hope you enjoyed Oregon. I live here and it simply beautiful and captivating all over the state. Safe travels
I live in utah and coexists in some of the steepest canyons in the country. Throw in the snow and ice and it is insane. I see some run away ramps that are steeper than any road I have driven on. The worst part of the run away ramps….I can see the ruts where it has been used and they extend to the end. Yikes!! Be safe out there.
so true. Driving in Utah is the best and the worst. I love it here but be careful down the hills.
I'm excited about his first trip to Yakima, he's gonna love that ride, hope he doesn't get vertigo
In our trucks we have cruise control, which uses the engine automatically, or manually engine brakes, and lastly the service brakes. I rarely have to press the service brake
To save you some time, take your fist and hit the side wall of the trailer. You can hear if it's empty by the echo of the bang bouncing off the wall. It's tricky if it's only half loaded but the more you do it the easier to tell the sound of unloaded and full. You don't have to hit hard either. It saves a lot of time if you gotta search multiple trailers.
It is Cabbage Hill! Omg! You were literally just a few miles from my house. My front porch is the view of those mountains you just came off of! So glad you made it down it safe! You should have taken your break at the rest stop there or pulled over at the View Point. It’s breath taking up there!
Next time you drive over Cabbage, there is a travel center at the bottom called Arrowhead.(Pendleton) TA and Casino. Great food in the casino food court, and a shuttle from the truck stop to casino.
Pretty cool of that guy to move you along while you're just trying to figure out where to sleep for the night...

It looks like your in Eastern Oregon, going down Cabbage Hill on I-84. It’s where I live. That decent is scary in a car or regular pick up… It scares me when I get to close to a semi truck. That road get closed so much in the winter bc driving conditions &/or accidents. You did a good job making it down.

If you ever get the chance to Bob tail through this stretch you should check out the old highway that parallels the highway for a stretch. Amazing views.
Very good job Alex
USA landscapes are so beautiful
A couple of years ago I worked for a mom and pop company shifting old tires in crappy old equipment here in central PA. One of the older trucks had no engine or jake brake, always hissing away with leaking air and let me tell you going down a steep mountain curvy county road whilst fully laden was far worse than this. Didn't stay there long!
Hey driver I have been driving since 1984 one rule for going down grades are many times to slow only once to fast. Take care stay safe

That's awesome your in my neighborhood, that hill you came down is Cabbage Hill. You're lucky lately it's been shut down multiple times for wrecks and spin outs for winter weather. The Pilot in Stanfield, OR. Be safe.

I miss the northwest at times… not while driving in the winter months 😂
Just a tip while checking for an empty, as you go along the side of it while checking for a seal, pound along the side of it. If loaded it will pound hard, while most empties, unless really short pallets it will sound hallow and usually flexes...just a fyi..safe travels and keep the rubber side down 👇👎😀

So in Australia, when a truck is passing we flash them with our high beams when they’re clear. They then thank you by flicking on their indicators, left right left right. But I notice you guys don’t do that.
Flashing the highbeams during the day is fine, doing that at night is more than likely going to piss someone off, you may get blinded by rearward facing spotlights or some other sort of retaliation.
They flash all the truck light when a truck driver is passing
We do that in the UK

Back when I drove it was just about all east coast runs when I first started. Once I bounced around between Ohio and New Jersey for 3 weeks straight, then all a sudden a run to Seattle from Jersey... what a trip. My first experience to the west coast, and that i84 had me on the edge and with no Jake brake.
