    That was the first thought in my head when I saw this, a rental car. In my 40+ years as a dealer mechanic, I can honestly say that rental cars are a very close second to young, inexperienced drivers when it comes to vehicle abuse and neglect. I tell everyone that's looking for a late model vehicle to never buy a former rental car, I've seen way too many of these rental vehicles that have a stellar reputation for reliability that are on their last leg at a low mileage due to abuse/neglect.

      I have a niece that was a manager at the airport Enterprise Rental. It was standard practice to reset the “maintenance light” on many rentals because they did not make money while the car was out of service. Many rental cars went well over their intended service intervals.

      I had a Corolla that was a rental for it’s first 30,000 miles. It was an awesome car. Never had an issue.

      @@JusMG559 LOL same here dude! My 2018 was also a former rental, so far so good 2 years and 21k miles later though, so knock on wood.

    I was a master Chevy technician and a master ASE technician about 20 years ago and watching your video's it is evident that you are a credit to your profession I'm sure your dealership appreciates your value to their company. You are doing a awesome job

    Wow! Reminds me of rebuilding engines with my dad. We would send the blocks out to be oversized and the heads to be reground, new valve stems, seats, guides. Like a surgeon, my father would clean his hands and I handed him the tools as he delicately reassembled the engines. I was only 8 when he had me rebuild a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor. This was alot of work....excellent video!

    You have provided a public service here, AMD. Most drivers don't know what's under a car's sheet metal. They might assume it is solid steel. And when you open the hood of a Toyota many of the folk examining all of the metal and plastic and rubber objects might be hard-pressed to figure out how these things work together to make the engine operate and move the car where the driver wants it to go.
    But now you have explained what all those strange things do--and how they work together as the Prime Mover. And it all makes sense!
    So, thanks for your excellent presentation, AMD! It demonstrates that, no matter what your age or education, learning can still be painless.

    Very impressed with the honesty, professionalism and pride he takes in his work.
    He's obviously put in thousands of hours of both classroom training and testing, then learned from hands on practice and experience.

      I'm sure the dealer racks in all the benefits with added sales. I know i would greatly trust that dealership with our friend as a top mechanic technician. I'm not sur our friend gets the appropriate consideration from his employer. The least the dealer can do is let our friend take pictures.

      I believe the hesd honchos in Japan are worried about company espionage. A channel on RUclips showed that volvo had a US connection by a 2001 BMW 530i (In 2001) and ship it to Sweden. They then fastened different quick release sensor on different parts of the exhaust and intake. They measured blowby going into the intake too. When they were done, they sent it back to the US with the quick release fittings still on as it didn't have an effect on drive ability. They either forgot to fill in the pin holes (or didn't bother ) on the manifold that could only be detected via smoke test. That 530i was an Ultra low emissions vehicle (ULEV) rare at the time.

    That is really a great and well planned out engine.. I have a 2020 Camry XLE with that engine.The fuel economy is unbelievable. I just went on a 200 mile trip and on the way to my destination I got 48.2 mi to the gallon. After I got back home and I did some very hard accelerations on the interstate I still got 46 MPGs. After you drive one of those cars with the 8-speed automatic transmission you learn where different power bands are at certain speeds.. It is hard to explain but that car will really move out good if you know how to drive it. It is a buttery smooth engine as well. Unlike the new Honda Accord I had considered buying before I purchased it..

      Got same engine it's 38 mpg in Florida no hills, do not exagerrate 48, it's possible only for hybrid

      @@a.a7648 I don't need you to speak for me or to try to correct me for anything.. When I first got that car the same trip I got 46.2.. one year later 48.2. You apparently don't know how to get the best fuel efficiency. I also have an XLE which has three driving modes and I keep it in the Eco mode when on a trip.. If you had anything other than the XSE or XLE you cannot compare your vehicle to mine... They only have one driving mode.. I was driving between 65 and 70 at times and did not tack but 1,250 RPMs . Also on the road when you are driving a hybrid the tac is running much higher.. They are not AS efficient on highway driving . However it would be better in town than mine. I AM VERY IMPRESSED BY THIS CAR AS I HAVE ALWAYS DRIVEN HONDA'S/ACURA'S BEFORE.

      @@rightlanehog3151A hybrid gets better mileage in town. If I can get 48 miles to the gallon on the highway with a naturally aspired engine and an 8-speed transmission I will take that any day.. I do not care for a CVT transmission which would be in the hybrid Camry.. It is a very numb and vague driving experience.. maybe in the near future I will have no alternative but until then I want a real transmission that has gears and not a one speed CVT.

    I work at the Toyota factory that builds those. I work where we bolt the transmissions on, all accessories, wire harness, etc. Ask any questions you want...

      The new 8 speed is holding up well after the initial hiccups. This engine gets better gas mileage than the 2AR

    This is an awesome mechanic. I watch your videos during lunch, after work, and just about any time I'm on RUclips. I own a 2018 Toyota Camry and it runs like a champion with 112,000 miles, and still runs very smooth, thanks to the information and advice for maintaining given on this channel. You're an outstanding mechanic and I learn something new with you almost everyday. Thanks for the videos.

      2018 se owner here going on 160k miles, recently did valve and intake cleaning and it's running better than when I first got it (used and likely abused, albeit). these things will stick around for a long time.

      After 3 Priuses, I leased a Chevy Bolt. Hybrids after 150k are the worst of hybrid and ICE problems. No more CATs and battery problems.

    The complexity of this is unbelievable! Everyone should watch this and then give major appreciation to the engineers who design these engines and the mechanics that work on them. And we expect these things to go over 100,000 miles. Amazing!

      I was wondering how much more complex this engine is than your old 22R? Just hypothesizing, I'd say about five times more complicated maybe just five times the number of parts! That means if you figure parts are made with the same reliability as before, this engine will have a problem five times as often as the simpler engine! Dad always said, "just get the wind up windows; less likely to break".

    I'm really impressed by your skills and ability to take an engine that complex apart and put it back together running properly. It makes me wonder if all dealerships have that kind of experienced and able technicians to service my car. I just got a brand new Hybrid Highlander; i hope my dealership has this level of quality technicians. Engines are at an incredible level of sophistication today that technicians ought to be top notch with with a good head on their shoulders.

    Mam this took alot of work. Mr. Car Care Nut, YOU ARE THE MAN!! My Hat goes off to you. It's too bad that folks don't even care about how they drive a rental car. I have a 2010 Toyota Camry 2.5L with a 6 Speed Manual Tranny and I have over 230,000 miles plus on my Camry. These 2.5L are great engines just with simple 5,000 miles oil change.

    I enjoyed watching the breakdown and assembly of this engine. It is not a DIY project, but it was fun to watch a Toyota master technician demonstrate how it is done. You would make an excellent teacher at a trade school. Maybe you can do a video series with more detailed instruction. Even if most of us will never be able to achieve master technician status, having an education could teach us how to do simpler maintenance on our car.

    Man, your stuff is great, I always learn a ton. My RAV4's shop manual says that the plastic water jacket thingy does more that just suppress gurgling: "The water jacket spacer suppresses the water flow in the bottom of the water jackets, guides the coolant in the upper area of the water jacket, and ensures uniform temperature distribution. As a result, the viscosity of the engine oil that acts as a lubricant between the bore walls and the pistons can be lowered, thus reducing friction.".

    Down on hands and knees bowing to a super being. Watching this and your two part introduction to the new engine made me very nostalgic for my old Ford Cortina Mk111. Ok it had the classic poor oil feed to the OHC, but an upgraded feed and a new cam and it was rock solid. There was even space in the engine bay. Not an engine management system anywhere to be seen. I even went high tech, and put an after market electric cooling fan.

    i can appreciate the timing and effort you put into the rebuild. Most shops would push their customers to replace with a low mileage donor engine. My preference is installing JDM (Japanese Domestic Manufacturer) engines pulled, shrink wrapped and sent to the USA with under 40,000 miles. So far installed in a 98 LS400, 07 RX350 and 97 CRV with great success. These engines are dirt cheap compared to a rebuilt/remanufactured and come with everything attached (i.e. intake plenum, fuel rails, fuel injectors, coil packs, water pump, alternator, ac condenser, p/s pump, belts, etc. After installation, customer feedback have been "car runs like new!".

      A couple of weeks ago my wife and I bought a 2021 RAV4 LE AWD as well and AMD is the reason I knew how to break it in slowly and to change the oil after the first 1,000 miles. Even though it's more maintenance, I'm going to continue following his schedule to take as good of care as I can.

      @@benjaminschuldt6211 That is the best thing you can do is change your oil at the first 1000 miles.. If there were any harmful contaminates in the oil you removed them. That's a great start to longer engine life.

    I also work at a Toyota dealership. I like that engine cart you have for the subframe and all. I built a similar one out of some scrap wood and a furniture dolly but that looks a lot better 👌🏼

      Hi my brother! So that table is actually for Nissan! But it works great on our subframes and it has two lock pins in the rear that lock the subframe from moving. Has wheels if you need to wheel the assembly out.

      I think if the mechanic is experienced with engine work it’s not difficult. The timing is a bit odd because of the intake gear but otherwise pretty straight forward

    I can see that the KISS principal has been thrown overboard a long time ago. O my.
    A question for mr Car Nut himself, if the engine ingested water, could you trace that by how that 1 piston was destroyed? I still have faith in Toyota, but the amount of hoops most
    car manufacturers have to jump through in order to get a lower CAFE number, brrrrrrrr .

      Hi! Usually from what I’ve seen when toyota engines ingest water they bend a rod or hydro lock and you’ll see corrosion on the cylinder walls

    I can’t believe these engines have an EGR system. Though variable cam / valve timing is supposed to eliminate that. It has for 15+ years.

    2019 SE with same engine now has 140K trouble free mileage! Just 2 set of tires, regular oil change every 7-8K miles, ATF changed at 130K miles, spark plug at 130K miles, and new windshield wiper and that’s is. Love this vehicle wish I can drive over 1 million miles 😅

    3:20 I always wondered why when I would see videos with the old 1MZ that some would have the oil level sensor and others would just be blocked off. This video was awesome BTW

      Hi! Best of luck! They appear intimidating but they’re not hard at all, just don’t forget that little valve on the block behind the back front cover. Everything else is smooth sailing. You’ll probably take the intake manifold off 3 times to route everything because it kinda of all over laps. Also depending on the model it’s very likely that the torque converter will pull out with the engine that’s why I would drop the cradle down which is very easy as it’s one piece

      Actually, YES! the TC did in fact come out & stay with the engine; almost made me think I forgot a TC bolt, but all 6 were there. Almost identical issue, hole in the block, but this one lost the number 3 cyl. The only cause that we can figure is LOF got done about 100 miles prior to failure. While no oil weight was on any receipt, the first receipt said "conventional" & the second receipt said "semi-synthetic blend" so I lucked out and the job is customer-pay instead of warranty. My only nervousness(es) is my ADHD & the fact I've never ever done a short-block before; EVER! I've swapped a few engines, but we got the short block in and I'm like "where's the crankcase?!??! I think my toughest part so far is sooooo much wiring harness involved!! The head bolts were freakin' impossible to get off as well but I got them. Now that I've waited a week or more for parts to come in, time to get to work on it tomorrow! I tell ya though, the balance shafts just work as a meat grinder on those pistons once they snap from the rod!

    You always do great videos. I do concur with you on the rental vehicles. People drive them like they stole them as well as just hard in them all the way around because it’s not their vehicle. I just purchased the 2024 Lexus RX350h with this engine. Your videos have assured me I have made a good choice. Great work!!

    Fantastic video! The longer I own my 2020 RAV4 AWD Hybrid, the more I value it. Coming from Ford, it was kinda hard to leave “my” brand. However, since Ford didn’t have the right car for me anymore, I set aside my hesitations to look elsewhere. Automatically, you’ll end up with Toyota due to the vast range of all kinds of different models. There is something for everyone. And now, it will be hard to leave the brand. Once you have owned one, there will be more to follow. Though I do keep a close eye on Ford what they come up with in the future, but doubt I will ever let go Toyota. This is how I feel about the brand after owning my RAV4 for one year. Despite the “oil issue” I had with the dealership (they used 5W30). In the end everything was corrected, in my case that is.       @@garrettm7993 Don’t know what your current Ford is. I came from a 2015 Kuga (Escape). If you want a truly great driving experience, Escape, no doubt about it. Nothing in its price range beats it, not even the RAV4. Even the used hybrid system resembles that of the RAV4. Ford has a reputation to keep up and the Escape is definately no exeption. Toyota however has another reputation to keep up: total quality and reliability, also in the long run. And not to forget resale value. So the choise was clear for me no matter how hard it was to say goodbye to Ford. And I do not regret my decision.

    When I was younger and travelled on business with co-workers, they would always treat their rentals like race cars. When it's a big faceless corporation, apparently consideration for others' property goes out the window.

    Wow, fantastic video! I did a diy rebuild of an L16 engine out of a Datsun 510 back in the day and was pretty proud of myself. That rebuild you did was magnitudes beyond that simple Datsun engine. You are awe inspiring and I always look forward to your content.

    Wow! I have this engine in my 2020 Camry LE. I've seen your other video explaining all the high-tech features on this engine. This engine is pretty complex and complicated. I've rebuilt three "old school" engines from the 70's that are pretty simple and straight forward. I wouldn't even consider doing a re-build on this engine. I would be good for the air filter and changing oil and filter...and that's it! lol Today was the 4th and final "Toyota Care" appointment with my Camry. The dealer put in 0-16 synthetic and of course a Toyota oil filter. I will continue doing the same as long as I own it.

      I was thinking they would give you a new engine as well.. I read an article that said when Korean brand cars engines blow such as kias and hyundais they buy a lot of salvage engines from junk yards and put those in the cars and you're not getting a new engine in those as well.. There are a lot of things that are done to save money as well as getting salvaged parts and other things get used from the junkyard.. Warranty contractors jump on this full force and many dealers do as well..

      because a whole engine doesn't have a part number; you get the individual parts that were compromised that make up the engine. in this case he said everything except the covers. I throw those in part washers and reuse. its just a panel. the assembly lines in factory has new whole assembled engines, never dealers, regardless of car manufacturer.

      @@TheCarCareNut I was wondering the same thing.. These new engines are getting very complex. I would think twice before I would start taking apart one of these Dynamic Force engines.. lf you left out a washer or gasket or some other small component the end result would be catastrophic ! I would have want something like that to be repaired by a certified mechanic that was trained to work on those types of engines.. Someone like You👍

      @@charlesjackson1700 I'm in that boat, too. At 68 years old my capabilities and enthusiasm are dropping while engine complexity is rising. I think my engine teardown and assembly days are mostly done. Funny - I'm not sad about that!

      @@flagmichael These engines are very complex.. If you went to school and were studying to work on them you could probably do as good as anyone since you have prior experience on engines as they once were.. Now we are being faced with more hybrids and electrical cars as well.. If you don't know what you're doing when you work on one of those you could get electrocuted... I am satisfied with just doing the maintenance on mine. Since I got away from domestic brands 20 years ago I have never had a single issue to go wrong with any Honda or Toyota I have ever owned.. not even a light bulb..

    Much respect from one tech to another. Very handy work on such a new engine, dropped much knowledge too. Was it the cylinder head that the Japanese warning said to keep away from sharp objects? Thats the only thing I can think of that would be so sensitive. I bet if you sent pieces of that debris off for analysis you would probably find metals, that did not come from that vehicle. I just can't imagine what would have cause that besides sending a coin or similar through the intake, downstream from the filter whilst someone is revving the engine. How does the rental company not charge previous renter?

      Thank you my brother. The Japanese warning was on the cylinder head likely they don’t want it dinged since it’s a machined surface. It’s still a mystery what happened to this one.

    This engine in the hybrid is amazing, hardly ever hit 1500 RPM at 60MPH and below, seems to runs mostly in the 1200 RPM range. Fixing to see what it does at 75-80MPH but I don't expect it to run much higher. Very efficient mated to the electric motor

      How can you see the engine revs on Hybrid? Hybrid gauge has Charge-Eco-Power zones, but not marked in RPM, at least on Camry, Sienna, and Highlander as far as I've seen.

      @@alexmukhortov926 E210 Corolla has this engine in 2.0 verion hybrid and also a tachometer.
      I think the facelift version that just came out ditched it though but still some hybrids have it.

      Coming from 34 years with a major electric utility (heck - being retired 2 1/2 years I can name them: Arizona Public Service) I am confident electric infrastructure is the big limitation. The excessive photovoltaic solar from California will make it worse west of the Rockies unless people are able to charge their cars in the afternoon.
      I see it coming but don't know if I will live to see it. NERC estimated the North American (US and Canadian) infrastructure needed about half a trillion dollars in upgrades before EVs were a coming thing, and failing to build for the future is always a mistake. Since most of the infrastructure - at least in the US - is privately owned it will be ratepayers who foot the bill. As a political conservative I will still say this is a legitimate national issue; the five interties ("grids") in the continental US span multiple states (except Texas - theirs is mostly their own) and in Arizona we had a major blackout in 1996 from overheated lines sagging into trees in Washington and Oregon. Barely a month earlier much of the same area was hit because Idaho had too much load. It's time to make this a priority.
      For all that, I have never been afraid of the future and I'm not going to start now. It can all be worked out; it will just take ingenuity, sane government (okay, that's a tough one) and time. And money.

      I was thinking the same thing, hell I drive a Toyota Prius and the engine side of my Prius is not nearly as complicated as this, and the trans is as simple as can be
      Not really sure I have any faith that this engine would run for $300,000 Miles, or the trans for that matter.
      I have 367,000 on my Prius.
      Easy maintenance, and easy to work on for the most part, reliable, and efficient are all I care about.

    Hi
    Today one of these engine blew up on our cars. We used proper engine oil 0w-20 Fully Synthetic(Australian climate). Car has been serviced regularly and never missed an oil change every 10,000kms.
    Car did not overheated. Just blew up while running.
    What you suggest what can cause this.
    Reply will be highly appreciated.

    That car was a 2021 Toyota Camry LE, the giveaway was it had the hood prop instead of the shock strut Hood lifts.

    can you please make a video about how the Toyota ABS system works and how to and when to bleed the ABS module for example do you need to bleed the ABS using a scan tool after changing the master cylinder. And how often do they go bad and what causes failure in ABS pumps.
