The critiques of Bruno still stand tbh because he hasn’t changed: he doesn’t innovate, he only knows how to reach back, never forward, and he never offers a contemporary perspective so his music always feels anachronistic. Although technically gifted, cynics often dismiss Bruno as an, overly formulaic, overly polished, “glorified wedding singer” who digs up past sounds from r&b, soul, funk, rock n roll, Motown etc for mass-market Pop crossover hits. It’s become a bit of a contrived, predictable formula that he keeps revisiting bc it sells. That’s the most valid critique of Bruno Mars. If there’s a vintage black music trend from the last 75 years, he’s going to hop on it, sometimes to the point of borderline parody. He trawls around the graveyard of past black music trends that have fallen out of the mainstream consciousness and fashions together these frankenstein pastiches of classics that, while standing out in the current music scape, always pale in comparison to the timeless records they were inspired by. I often keep this opinion to myself, because I am a big fan, and have respect for his talent. I can call Bruno Mars derivative, but I can never call him untalented. His derivativeness is more of a nitpick, because in spite of it, he’s still, pretty much the best the mainstream music industry has to offer right now.

Music is timeless and Bruno Mars likes to make music in way that people used to make back in the 70s, people finding it anachronistic don't understand how music works or what anachronistic means, anachronistic is something that doesn't belong in the time that it's being shown but the term anachronistic inherently doesn't work in music since different styles of music can coexist, Bruno Mars' songs being famous is a prime example of that, or another example if you look at a Michael Jackson album without knowing when it came out you would think that it was a modern release because of the style that Michael Jackson had is constantly used to this day, or in other words the style that Michael Jackson introduced in the 80s is still used today, his albums would blend in with modern music, and in general this how music works, pulling inspiration from other people, this act makes music timeless, most people would consider Jazz a style of the old days but these people don't realize that Jazz is constantly played in videos, games and other forms of media that they consume

I’m confused, the end of the videos said the Silk Sonic project was withdrawn from the grammys, but didn’t that album win 4 grammy awards? Nice Vid, loved the end with all the shoutouts, especially😂👍🏾🙌🏾
They withdrew the actual album from consideration, because the "Leave The Door Open" single came out during the consideration year for the 2022 awards, in which it took home 4 awards, while the album itself came out the following consideration year for the 2023 awards, and they felt they already had enough from just the 4 awards for "Leave The Door Open."
Bruno Mars did addressed the cultural appropriation thing during the Anderson Paak & Bruno Mars Breakfast Club interview with Charlamagne at 21:45, but I'm not sure if he's addressed it other times.
About the politics of the Grammy thing, Bruno Mars isn’t white, he’s like ethnically Filipino which are arguably represented less in entertainment than women and black people. I don’t agree with the 24k magic pick for Grammy but it feels like people sometimes try too hard to get mad at the Grammys biases. Especially when they get mad at white women Adele winning over black women Beyonce but then get mad at Filipino man Bruno Mars winning over white women Lorde lol.
It’s crazy how badly we’ve lost the plot when it comes to the ideal of equality. The point of the ideal was to let the quality of the talent speak for itself regardless of who it came from, black, woman or otherwise. Instead, now it’s just the inverse of the same thing. We don’t want it if it doesn’t come from our community, regardless of if you actually deserve it or not(which Bruno absolutely does). In fact, we’ll even take worse quality if we get to ourselves in the person doing it. That’s not what the marginalized people of yesteryear fought for.
Two things that come in that Bruno mars cultural appropriation debate: 1) it’s how he’s able to monetize, and commodified past black music genres and get awarded for it while black/mixed with black musicians aren’t given that praise. Like you said with the weekend, he was able to challenge 70s and 80s pop music in such a innovative, refreshing way with after hours and we all seen how the Grammys treated, besides the Super Bowl back and forth, another reason for his snub was bc Grammy voters had a tough time putting the album and songs in either R&B or pop. Bruno don’t have to deal with that, you also have Janelle monae who’s always been known to challenge different past black music era sounds and innovative them with contemporary sounds and thematically taboo-breaking, thought provoking and provocative subject matters and despite being one of the most critically acclaimed and influential musicians of her generation, she has never won a Grammy at all. This similarly go to Miguel, Leon bridges, Jazmine Sullivan, sza, summer Walker, lucky date, tank and the bandages and even Beyoncé, only winning in “urban” categories and never in major categories and having to put in much work to achieve similar success 2) it seems he or at least his team uses his mixed race heritage and racial ambiguity to get away from having his career damaged or questioned it’s like being racially ambiguous is a leverage way for celebrities/public figures and even regular people to have a chameleon like presence or get away from things from people who are unambiguously black/asian/indigenous or even white won’t get away I especially feel this is for white people bc I know if Bruno was more white or at least more white passing the general public would understand more surrounding his name being attached to cultural appropriation bc we are so used to that type of situation, if we was black or at least biracial/mixed with black with more Afrocentric phenotype features, the world would just see as a R&B artist who’s talented as a performer but his artistry isn’t respected or given overwhelming praises bc he’s copying and pasting old genres without adding anything new or innovative to it, To me I wouldn’t out right Bruno is a culture vulture bc I feel it’s a little too complicated for that but I do think he’s needed in the cultural appropriation discussions more than people want him to
Ya'll in america care about race a little too much, as someone who was born in Angola I never cared about stuff like this and if someone asked me if Bruno could do it I'd say yeah, music is supposed to unify people independent of gender or color of your skin and not only should people look at music like that but also ya'll should try to lessen the racial barriers, for example in Angola people do not care if you're black or white or mixed even tho Angola is the country were the slave trades started, people caring about stuff like this is what's going to prevent racism from vanishing, ya'll try to divide the human race in different groups when in reality we're all humans in the end of the day, whatever happened in the past should stay on the past and we and ours future generations should move on and try to live as a human community and not as a black/white/arab/latino communities
I can’t really say he’s a culture vulture when he grew up listening to it and surrounded by it. At that point that’s all he knows and you can’t really blame him for that.🤷 But the racial ambiguity point is half valid. I would only argue that it’s still not in his favor because hes still brown. And you would be surprised how many people thought he was black. lol
Honestly thought Bruno would make a dope Michael Jackson in a biopic, esp as he was a MJ and EP impersonator as a child, fullcircle moment, but yeah as far as a male RnB/Pop artist he up there with CBreezy, Usher, Bieber and JT
Wow did not know Grammies had these issues for awhile which explains a lot about JAY-Z’s complaints during his speech about his wife Beyoncé not winning when he got the lifetime award in 2024 and the JAY-Z covert references about Miley Cyrus terrible album nominated robbing people which I think explains Miley’s weird speeches begging for mercy for winning. I don't think any new album of his will be as successful as his first two albums. After a while people kind of got tired of Bruno and how similar all his songs sound and the whole throwback style music. Since 24k magic he's been collabing first with silc sonic and now Lady Gaga which is kind of smart to not solely focus on him and get a broader audience which can set him up for success if he release another solo album.

Idk, for what you explain in your video it makes it seem like Bruno Mars is a white man when he is clearly not, maybe he isn't Afro-American but he is still brown (I think Puerto Rican?) I don't see why people thought that just because there were 2 African American artists there that it's a race thing. Unless the academy really was just looking for the lightest shade of black and gave it to the whitest dude which would be Bruno Mars which.... I mean... That would be wack 😂

@@KingBenny how did he ruin his legacy mister ? stop making up stuff and fyi thats what i like was no1 in that album and it seemt like you were actually being irritated by the success he had, he uploads quality not quantity so no wonder so much success without pumping shit load of cringe trendy stuff
@@backuptokeshav I like bruno Mars dawg... this is not a hate video
24k magic sounds like it was made for the Motown Era
Always wondered what happened to Bruno after 2016 when it came to his solo work...
That sucks...
The album of the year hate is so stupid, every album could’ve arguably won, theres no definitive answer with heavy hitters such as those. Those who said that bruno was chosen because hes not black is so backwards. Hes more of a minority than black americans, and there was a white woman nominated as well, by that logic, she would've won. For those who dont know, hes a puerto rican, filipino hawaiian. And you cant say hes a culture vulture since hes always giving flowers to those hes inspired by!

It’s a shock to me that 24K didn’t make it to BB no. 1 - I didn’t care for charts then. And Bruno is one of the greatest artists of all time. Next to Michael.
This is really well done bro. I hadn't considered that 2015 was the jumpoff oint for people being conscious of institutions and award shows. Your videos are always in depth and that sets you apart from people who make similar videos on here
Thank you! I definitely think once this is my career I'll put way more time into these and rly pump out the best vids I can but honestly I'm just trying my best to be consistent
The fact that people argue about a person’s level of blackness when they want it to fit a certain scenario is hilarious
Third title for the win lmao
the third title did NOT win
@@KingBenny onto four?
I’m confused, the end of the videos said the Silk Sonic project was withdrawn from the grammys, but didn’t that album win 4 grammy awards?
Nice Vid, loved the end with all the shoutouts, especially😂👍🏾🙌🏾
They withdrew the actual album from consideration, because the "Leave The Door Open" single came out during the consideration year for the 2022 awards, in which it took home 4 awards, while the album itself came out the following consideration year for the 2023 awards, and they felt they already had enough from just the 4 awards for "Leave The Door Open."
Oh okay, thanks for the clarification.
can't believe he didn't hit number 1 on any of the osngs on 24k magic
He actually did with That's what I like
who yall think would win in a fight? mexican fantano or bruno mars
Broski said "I havent heard a EDM song since Bruno" then showed us 24K magic 2 spots behind the chainsmokers 💀💀
I was obvsly trolling lol... I put up on the screen text that said I was being hyperbolic
The fact this video was posted a few days after his new song with Lady Gaga
I think bruno mars need to get back to writing heartbreak songs
2:16-Minor correction: "That's What I Like" was No. 1 for the week of May 13th, 2017
My mistake! Billboard chart site can be confusing at times... I usually don't make these types of error but it just so happened to happen
I Love Your Channel & Videos
Thanks!
At the time people might have been mad but lookin back Idk if we can say that Adele didn’t deserve to win over Beyoncé
U dnt have ur own Super Bowl halftime show being mediocre and he did 2 within 3 years he’s a megastar
Fun fact: the song loyalty on DAMN by kendrick n Rihanna samples Bruno Mars' 24 k magic song...
He deserved every single grammy. All the Lordes, Lamars and Jay Z's can come together and still won't be able to make an album better than 24k magic.
So fun fact Macklemore sophomore album opens up with him talking about Grammy night😂
I am watching this and thinking that I don’t think I have ever heard a Bruno Mars song.
Two things that come in that Bruno mars cultural appropriation debate:
1) it’s how he’s able to monetize, and commodified past black music genres and get awarded for it while black/mixed with black musicians aren’t given that praise. This similarly go to Miguel, Leon bridges, Jazmine Sullivan, sza, summer Walker, lucky date, tank and the bandages and even Beyoncé, only winning in “urban” categories and never in major categories and having to put in much work to achieve similar success
2) it seems he or at least his team uses his mixed race heritage and racial ambiguity to get away from having his career damaged or questioned it’s like being racially ambiguous is a leverage way for celebrities/public figures and even regular people to have a chameleon like presence or get away from things from people who are unambiguously black/asian/indigenous or even white won’t get away I especially feel this is for white people bc I know if Bruno was more white or at least more white passing the general public would understand more surrounding his name being attached to cultural appropriation bc we are so used to that type of situation, if we was black or at least biracial/mixed with black with more Afrocentric phenotype features, the world would just see as a R&B artist who’s talented as a performer but his artistry isn’t respected or given overwhelming praises bc he’s copying and pasting old genres without adding anything new or innovative to it,
To me I wouldn’t out right Bruno is a culture vulture bc I feel it’s a little too complicated for that but I do think he’s needed in the cultural appropriation discussions more than people want him to
He’s a hawaii boy from Manoa valley. He ain’t vulturing shit. My boy is living his best life and singin songs.
At that point that’s all he knows and you can’t really blame him for that.🤷
But the racial ambiguity point is half valid.
That's what I like went number 1

DAM CHANGED TH3 TITLE 3 TIMES
He’s a better comparison to Michael Jackson than Chris brown
Wow did not know Grammies had these issues for awhile which explains a lot about JAY-Z’s complaints during his speech about his wife Beyoncé not winning when he got the lifetime award in 2024 and the JAY-Z covert references about Miley Cyrus terrible album nominated robbing people which I think explains Miley’s weird speeches begging for mercy for winning. If you could do a video about that.
Bruno is my goat for sure
You’re an outstanding RUclips channel.
Thank you
Bruno downgraded himself to give ways to others. But still won the grammys. With Silk Sonic.😁
First of all: Excellent job as always my guy. Love all the videos.

So Bruno nearly ruined his career by being too successful 😂 . I love Bruno and heard he is working on a new album so hopefully it will have some great new songs. I don’t think bruno has ever released a bad song and judging by the new song with lady gaga we are in for a treat
Unfortunate timing to release this now, with his new song with lady Gaga here like 2 days ago lol
I think it's fortunate personally
Idk, for what you explain in your video it makes it seem like Bruno Mars is a white man when he is clearly not, maybe he isn't Afro-American but he is still brown (I think Puerto Rican?) I don't see why people thought that just because there were 2 African American artists there that it's a race thing. Unless the academy really was just looking for the lightest shade of black and gave it to the whitest dude which would be Bruno Mars which.... I mean... That would be wack 😂
Cultural appropriation is not exclusive to white ppl... but I didn't go into further detail bc I truly cannot speak to what bruno's race is beyond his ethnicity
Mars is part Asian (Filipino)
I dont like how simpy he is and how much he caters to the female ego
