Yes, the Samsung watches are the best thing on the Android side. Especially if you have a Samsung Phone (sms and email app). And while it does typically last longer the usability, or "user-friendlyness", still isn't on par with the Apple Watch. I think that's largely thanks to the square"er" screen as well though. I see a potato. Tbh battery life isn’t an issue in my experience. They charge really quick too. Charge it at night, or while you’re in the shower. Easy charge all day, and night if you wear it
I’ve been an Apple user for years. The best thing it has that no other company has is the strong economics across all devices. The frustrating thing about that though is the prices 😡 and the constant minor upgrades every year. I’m still using iPhone X, Apple Watch Series 3, AirPods 1st Gen and iPad Pro 12’. Connection across all is great still.
I agree with u bro I'm using a iphone xr with a series 5 watch and apple ipad air 3 they upgrade way too much every year it's crazy I dint have the money to upgrade every year but when I get a chance and have extra money I try to upgrade
Serious question: Why can't you compare it to the Garmin? If the use cases are similar (notifications, fitness tracking, sleep tracking, time displaying, etc) why not?
Deiter thanks for the review. You guys and your podcast are my favorite part of the Verge. Every time I hear your voices I feel like I'm at home with my family!
I’m currently on a Series 3 aluminium and debating wether I should go for another aluminum or a stainless steel one because of the sapphire. Scratches on the screen is a real problem…😕
Nice video,... trying to decide between a new Series 5 or SE for my son. Last year's flagship vs this year's econo offering. The SE is 40 bucks cheaper,... only reason why I'm scratching my head over this decision. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Good review but you didn’t even mention the increased storage capacity (now 32 GB on both the cellular and non-cellular models as compared to 16/8 GB on the series 4 cellular and non-cellular models respectively). That means more apps, more songs, more audiobooks without cellular service or data charges. I think that’s an important thing to consider if you’re trying to decide whether or not to upgrade.
wondering.... beside songs, what kind of apps can be really useful on the watch? as far as i can tell it just notification/reply + fun health stuff... to benefits those 32gb? or even 16gb?
he kept saying apple watch is so far ahead but where is sleep tracking , 24 hours heartrate monitoring , 3-4 days battery life ....the only new thing is the always on display and android smartwatches had these for past 3-4 years
@@Ara198826 3-4 days battery life will eventually come with the micro led displays on the coming iWatches. they consume way less power, than OLEDs and there will be a new processor.
I had a series 0 for two years then I got a series 2 watch. I could tell there was a big difference. I wondering how much of a difference I am going to notice with the Series 5 I just ordered? I got the Aluminum in Space Grey I like the matte look, if I had the money I would have gotten the Series 5 in Stainless Steel in Black. I am looking for faster speed and use it more for actives. Sometimes my Series 2 doesn't automatically pick up my workout until I am 15 mins in and it miscalculates all the workout times. So, I am hoping the Series 5 will show an improvement. Has anyone had experience with the activity app on the Series 5?
Apple undersells the actual battery life, I have a Series 3 which is two years old, and even after being used all day every day I get almost 3 days use on a single charge (uses 30-40% every 24 hours). I also use a third party sleep tracker every night.
So the Apple watch still can't be used without a iPhone? I was hoping to buy one for my wife buy she uses her Samsung Galaxy phone. Let me know when Apple Watch is a independent smartwatch.
Getting one 😋 I will be upgrading from my series 1 to a series 5 I would continue to use the Series 1 except that I damaged the screen. Else I would have waited as the series 1 does what I need it to (track fitness and show me some notifications). The extra features like the always on display is a bonus (I'm fine with wrist flicking to check the time). I am usually in close proximity to my phone so cellular is not a need however I will be getting the stainless steel version which comes with the cellular feature so good to have and see if I actually end up using or if it enables me to leave my phone behind when doing certain tasks. Battery life has also not been a concern as of yet but I do look forward to some extended battery life for sleep tracking. Qi wireless charging is another bonus for when I am somewhere that offers it (airports/coffeeshops/etc) Waterproofing is something that I do look forward to (series 1 is only splash proof) as I always have to be careful to remove when by the pool, at the beach or in the shower. Im not the kinda guy that dunks my phone in the pool for a picture just because it is water resistant.
Steven Sam - Why not opt for the series 3... it’s still a vast improvement on the series 1 and a lot cheaper... I’m also sure you can get a series 4 cheaper now too
Paul D Hey, I did consider it and don’t get me wrong, the series 3 does do everything I would need it to. I am choosing to go for the Series 5 because I plan on using it long term just like i have the Series 1 To be honest. I actually bought the original Apple Watch, Series 0?, Apple upgraded me to the Series 1 when I has an issue and I didn’t even realize it until a few days later when i noticed the display was a bit brighter and apps were launching a much faster. In short, really haven’t upgraded since my original purchase over 4 years ago. I also travel a lot and mostly in Asia so the upgraded Cellular function on the Series 5 is great. Series 4 cellular doesn’t work in a bunch of countries in Asia especially in Sri Lanka and India where I usually am.
Teresa Young, Zombie Whisperer I never wore watches before the Apple Watch. But especially with the sports band you literally don’t feel this thing and forget it’s there. It’s become part of my wrist now. So much so that I forget to take it off in the shower or charge it some nights and then I look down and realize I’m still wearing it and/or the battery is dead.
Yeah that’s what happend with my series 1 I got it when I was 7 and I was really funny back then about watches but I’ve been wearing my mums fit bit for a bit as I am getting a series 5 and it feels fine so hopefully I can stand the Apple watch
I don’t have one, and I’ve already smashed it’s glass face. Seriously though, can the “always on” feature be turned off without turning off the watch? I don’t want the face always lit up, until I look at it.
I don’t quite understand how people need to charge the series 4 every day. I workout at least 30 minutes a day, shut off my watch at night, and it lasts 2-3 days that way.
I don’t think we need to, but it takes 1 second to attach the charger so I do it anyway. I like starting the day with 100 percent but I could easily get 2 days even without shutting it off at night.
My Gear S3 has a variety of other problems. Apple watch is ... customizability aside, so much better. Which is why I'm switching eco system. I don't have much hope in the near future for Android side wearables. Functionality wise I don't feel like the S3 is a giant step up from my old Pebble 2 (the wheel is super nice), whereas iPhone/Apple watch seems so much better integrated.
I use Wear OS but this makes me want to switch. Can you disable the screen raise to wake to save battery life? Also, can you see the AOD in bright sunlight?
Agreed. My Samsung Gear Sport has 3-4 days battery life and does most of what this review says about Apple watch. There's not a single explanation in this review how Apple watch is way better.
Apple fanboys are not the most objective, unfortunately. This guy was gushing about how the Apple Watch is way ahead of the competition (and HIS reason is the watch can do things on iphone that other watches can't... well, DUH). Try out Samsung Gear S3 with a Samsung phone and you pretty much get the same experience, or in some cases even better. Samsung's rotating dial and interface is pretty damn good, and I've yet to see any bugs. Battery life? 2-3 days. The ONLY thing I would say Apple Watch is better, is the ECG and some of the health features they built in.
Novelty wears off in like a month or so. I like to view graphics full screen, you soon realise that there's no point concentrating on a tiny screen. Watches are for time only. I gave mine to my misses
Have you even been near a Galaxy watch? No sleep tracking? Really?! How about 4 day battery with everything on, including a coloured AOD with a smooth continuous dial? The app store that has been on Samsungs since forever? The rotating bezel and the better interface? I wouldnt be upset if you liked this watch more, but to call it objectively better? Please!
I totally agree with you, they said that apple developed a new oled screen for better efficiency what a joke its either a Samsung or lg or japan displays OLED , we all know how tiny and very efficient oled are with dark mode, lcd displays are thicker and doesn’t have the benefit of oled
Le Chat Botté there are people out there who have medical conditions so they cant stare for too long at oled & amoled screen , so apple creates new type of oled so those people can enjoy without having seizures
6:15 Sleeptracking is missing because you would need to wear your Apple Watch during your sleep, making it impossible to charge at night?? If you’re also using your apple watch during the day, well, when do you charge? 🤷🏼♂️
I’m using a series 2 on watchOS 6. On WiFi, activity data syncs with the cloud, and you can download apps from the App Store (not working rn), but you can’t stream music/podcasts and you need an iPhone to change what songs/podcasts to sync. Phone calls and messages are available if you choose LTE. The battery life is inconsistent when your iPhone is not nearby. I wouldn’t recommend it if you have an Android tho, because you need an iPhone to set it up anyway. You can get an SE on eBay and sell it later, but you should just get a Fossil Sports, a Withings Move or a Galaxy Watch Active.
Series 5 is better because...its better! Honestly; this video did not offer any compelling arguments as to why this particular smartwatch is better than its predecessor. Dieter summarised the video perfectly by saying that it's a very minor update. I like your enthusiasm for the brand and product, but please don't lead consumers into thinking that it's ok to pay 400 dollars for something that essentially did not change at all. A reviewer should take a critical stance between company and consumer and not let their enthusiasm/love for the brand cloud their judgement. You are a reviewer, not a sales rep! I do like the ability to buy the watch in different casings. I really love the cinematography and overall vibe of the video!
Seriously, we need a long and detailed review for the Galaxy Watch Active 2 because i believe that it is the best smartwatch on the android side of things. It lies somewhere between the Apple Watch Series 3 and 4 but closer to the Series 4.
Seriously lol "Apple has made the best watch EVER" then goes on to list a bunch of features that have been out on other smartwatches for years, with more battery life. 🙄
Android fanboys just don’t understand Apple. They don’t rush stuff out to try and be first. Ie, Samsung fold. They refine things, and deliver top notch quality. It’s like when Andys talk about how many megapixels their camera is compared to an iPhone, while not realizing there’s a lot more to a quality camera than that one aspect. Apple products are the sum of the parts.
@@AxionXIII really? Apple doesn't make anything. They are a software based company. All the hardware they get are from lg, Samsung, Sony, etc. You say they "refine"? Have top of line? LMWAO. Bend gate, antenna gate and among others. Oh, they reason for all that is because "you're holding it wrong"
@Dieter - did you buy it with the cellular plan? I've been using Apple products since 1991 and I currently have an iPhone 10 and since I'm a gym rat this would be a great fitness tracker and I also walk my dog about 2 miles daily so this watch would be a plus......what say you? I'm also on the fence because word has it that the Series 6 will be released in September with the sleep monitor and some other jazz and I don't want to pull the trigger too soon.....holla back son!

What screen protector do you have on your watch if you even used one? I like it without one but want to protect this beautiful screen.
I have an Apple Watch series 3 right now, should I upgrade?
Can you turn off the always on display for better battery then the series 4?
Zyfiel yes you can set the display to turn completely off like the series 4. Not sure how much that will improve battery, but likely just as good if not better than Series 4.
Yes you can. The battery last about 10% longer (well, that is what I have heard) compared to having the AOD on!
I see a potato.
Tbh battery life isn’t an issue in my experience. They charge really quick too. Charge it at night, or while you’re in the shower. Easy charge all day, and night if you wear it
lalafell
Yeah you can turn it off completely or put your watch in to theater mode for just a quick toggle if you're at the movies
If I get this imma be holding it up to the tv at night in front of my parents so they can see the noise meter lol
Strong economics, yes, due to overcharging us!
Deciding between a series 4 or 5. Which one should I get and is the 5 worth the extra $$$?
Can you still connect it do your iPhone and answer calls txt messages even if it’s just Apple Watch 5 with GPS?
I love my Apple Watch 4 - I don't see much of a reason to upgrade myself, but if anyone does pick up a series 5, you're in for a treat!
Where to buy one?
i bought mine at iwatchclone, com . best quality

@jetho I had the Series 2 and then the Series 4, both aluminium. The glass of the Series 4 is WAY better, but still not completely resistant.
Go with stainless.. My series 3 scratched easily. My series 4 ss is spotless. Worth it
I wanted Dieter to do the iPhone reviews, no offense but he’s my fav 🙌🏻
Nice video,... trying to decide between a new Series 5 or SE for my son. Last year's flagship vs this year's econo offering. The SE is 40 bucks cheaper,... only reason why I'm scratching my head over this decision. Would love to hear your thoughts.
ok so i’m thinking of getting the series 5 and this will be my first apple watch. why should i get it? like what REALLY the point of it?
HeY StoB It fitnesses
Good review but you didn’t even mention the increased storage capacity (now 32 GB on both the cellular and non-cellular models as compared to 16/8 GB on the series 4 cellular and non-cellular models respectively). That means more apps, more songs, more audiobooks without cellular service or data charges. I think that’s an important thing to consider if you’re trying to decide whether or not to upgrade.
numspacsym ehm, Series 4 already had 32GB.
wondering.... beside songs, what kind of apps can be really useful on the watch? as far as i can tell it just notification/reply + fun health stuff... to benefits those 32gb? or even 16gb?
It also has twice the memory so you can download more songs, podcasts, audio books, apps, etc
Where do u download songs from?
how does a compass help my health - where is my sleep tracker
Issie wizzie sleep tracker is already available, just an application download away.
It's not that accurate , that's why apple watch doesn't have it
he kept saying apple watch is so far ahead but where is sleep tracking , 24 hours heartrate monitoring , 3-4 days battery life ....the only new thing is the always on display and android smartwatches had these for past 3-4 years
Out of curiosity, when exactly do you charge your watch when you use it for sleep tracking?
@@Ara198826 3-4 days battery life will eventually come with the micro led displays on the coming iWatches. they consume way less power, than OLEDs and there will be a new processor.
I’ve got a question, should I buy the new series 5 or just pick up a second hand series 4??
What's the point in a sleep tracker when you have to charge it every night?
It’s charges very quickly and lasts about a day, so you can charge it before bed and have it last you through the night and the next day
The point was explained to you in the post below. You should acknowledge that.
Apple undersells the actual battery life, I have a Series 3 which is two years old, and even after being used all day every day I get almost 3 days use on a single charge (uses 30-40% every 24 hours). I also use a third party sleep tracker every night.
Getting my first Apple Watch! Series 5 gold aluminium. GPS + Cellular. Super excited!
Dieter is gold, I'm not going to buy Series 5, but I'll watch this episode over and over again anyway.
Yep same here
Quick question I have a Apple Watch series 3 should I get the 5 or wait for the 6? Thanks!!!
ferraro38 Im going from a series 3 to a 5 and I’m really impressed . If you really want to upgrade go for it!
So the Apple watch still can't be used without a iPhone? I was hoping to buy one for my wife buy she uses her Samsung Galaxy phone. Let me know when Apple Watch is a independent smartwatch.
I find it hilarious when reviewers need to emphasize that the newest version of a product is the best. Like obviously it's the best one my guy lmao
Mustavi Hossain it's easy for companies to mess up and get it wrong though.

@@kermez9 Okay, I misinterpreted what you wrote. My bad.
Getting one 😋 I will be upgrading from my series 1 to a series 5
I would continue to use the Series 1 except that I damaged the screen.
Qi wireless charging is another bonus for when I am somewhere that offers it (airports/coffeeshops/etc)
Waterproofing is something that I do look forward to (series 1 is only splash proof) as I always have to be careful to remove when by the pool, at the beach or in the shower.
I am choosing to go for the Series 5 because I plan on using it long term just like i have the Series 1
To be honest.
The smart watches are cool, I just can't stand wearing anything on my wrists.
Brooo get used to it. The thing that builds an amazing outfit is different types of watches, or wrist accessories.
hull brooo? Okay girlyboy
Do you need to have a iPhone for it to work or can you use it with out an iPhone?
“The train I am riding everyday is too dam loud”😆
Yea Bart is so loud......hope the newer version has less noise.....
I don’t quite understand how people need to charge the series 4 every day. I workout at least 30 minutes a day, shut off my watch at night, and it lasts 2-3 days that way.
Wes Perry, sleep tracking requires more consistent charging 😴⌚️
I don’t think we need to, but it takes 1 second to attach the charger so I do it anyway. I like starting the day with 100 percent but I could easily get 2 days even without shutting it off at night.
@@joshritter6281 I let it drag out to put less charging strain on the battery. It should last about twice as long this way.
My gear S3 already had always on display and it launched in 2017... Don't know what the hating on other smartwatches is about.
Which apple watch will be best for iphone 11 ?
apple watch series 5 right now, but apple is supposedly releasing the series 6 within a months time
@@joshuaroney thanks
LTPO display technology is the real innovation by Apple and no one is actually giving credit or talking about it.
Ummm. Would love for them to see the gear s3 again and then compare.... gear has had so many of these features well before series 5
Agreed. My Samsung Gear Sport has 3-4 days battery life and does most of what this review says about Apple watch. There's not a single explanation in this review how Apple watch is way better.
Was looking for these responses... My S3 Frontier is and has been great since I bought it... And I can install 3rd party screens right out of the box?
@@mmzmunkynutz Same on my Gear sport and even on my gear S2
Apple fanboys are not the most objective, unfortunately. This guy was gushing about how the Apple Watch is way ahead of the competition (and HIS reason is the watch can do things on iphone that other watches can't... well, DUH). Try out Samsung Gear S3 with a Samsung phone and you pretty much get the same experience, or in some cases even better. Samsung's rotating dial and interface is pretty damn good, and I've yet to see any bugs. Battery life? 2-3 days. The ONLY thing I would say Apple Watch is better, is the ECG and some of the health features they built in.
I have the Galaxy Watch, and Tizen is just the best and most intuitive watch OS there is out there.
Galaxy Watch owner watching this video be like... What??
This is so delusional.
All 5 of them
My 4-year old $120 Pebble Time has compass, too. Still has 4 days battery life. Still wearing it everyday and night
What camera and lens was used for this video? Great video but as a film nerd I was so intrigued by the quaility of the video

Please!
The Verge is completely Baised towards Apple Products! You can clearly see that from the podcasts, Videos and articles they write.
@@boiboiboi1419 the functionality could be suggested by apple but the underlying display panel is definitely manufactured by Samsung or LG.
Sound like a typical Samsung fagboy. Half the things you listed is subjective. Apple watch continue to dominate the game.

Lowe Lilliehorn I just upgraded from 3 to 4 and what’s most noticed is the screen size. But I think the battery last less because of it.

Hey can you someday reflect on what all can the apple watch do without the iPhone.
I like the watch but I am an android user.
Other than tell you which direction you're pointing, not much.
You need an Iphone to set it up otherwise its locked
Did Siri get any better with watch OS 6?
Also this doesn’t seem like a game changer compare to s4 after s3 ... would you upgrade from the s4?
Sage Baram Siri is exponentially better on 6.
Seriously, we need a long and detailed review for the Galaxy Watch Active 2 because i believe that it is the best smartwatch on the android side of things. It lies somewhere between the Apple Watch Series 3 and 4 but closer to the Series 4.
That's cool and all but PLEASE don't try to say that a compass is that big of a deal.
It is if you're a nerd, like myself lmao
My Samsung LTE had "always on" since last year, I can also send text messages.
Good for you
And the "always on display" has color as well. Which that feature been around for couple years now. Yay for apple finally catching up.
