- I recently had the pleasure of meeting with Tim O’Sullivan one of the amazing staff engineers at Barefoot Recording. Tim gave us a marvellous studio tour sharing a brilliant history of the studio, It’s amazing how many great records were influenced within its walls.
About Barefoot Recording
Eric Valentine has owned Barefoot Recording in Hollywood since 2000, where he’s worked with a “who’s who” of incredible artists like Queens of the Stone Age, Smash Mouth, Good Charlotte, and Third Eye Blind, among others. In addition to being an amazing producer and engineer, Eric also co-founded UnderTone Audio where he designs professional audio equipment. UTA notably produces the Unfairchild compressor which we discussed at length!
Prior to becoming a renowned recording studio, Barefoot Recording was built as a post office in the early ’50s. Some time later, Andrew Berliner acquired the space, converting it into Crystal Industries Recording Studios in 1967. At the time, the studio hosted an all-star list of clients, including Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Supertramp, Eric Clapton, and James Taylor. Most notably, perhaps, Crystal Industries is where Stevie Wonder recorded Songs in the Key of Life.

Let me know you're watching by leaving a comment below!.... I hope your new year is off to a marvellous start! We've got a ton of interviews and studio tours coming up in 2019!
Great to see inside Eric Valentine's Studio!
A Mazing Studio! Thanks Warren and Tim!
Thanks Apple!! Happy New Year!
Hi Darlene! Happy New Year!
Warren, hello... I know this is off topic, but what is the name of the website that you can find liner note information on every album out there? You’ve mentioned this website a few years back.
Reason why I’m asking is cause I’m recording drum samples in my studio and I absolutely love the sound of the drum kit from the song Chances by Five For Fighting. Just wanted to look up what studio it was tracked at and what kit they used, ESPECIALLY that snare sound!
Any advice would help, thanks!!!

Studio tour-- COOL!
Thanks Sheila! It's a marvellous studio!
Excellent!! Always nice to see working studios that aren't all spit and polish. Sometimes our rooms look like crap, but sound like heaven!
Thank you, Warren!!
Hi Joel, I agree 100%!! What it sounds like is the most important thing! Happy New Year!!
That's the coolest meter bridge I've ever seen (Studio A).
I agree Loren! Happy New Year!
Engineers walking around studios drinking coffee...
AND giving a shnizzle about each other
Hi Rich! Haha genius!! Now you might be on to something? Haha Happy New Year!
Haha yes, indeed Rich!
The best studio tour yet!
@@Producelikeapro is the best for us in ooo life or so happy to I o u
Been sick and bedbound for a few weeks now... I've been catching up on all your wonderful content. Thanks Warren.
Feel better my friend! Happy New Year!!
Terrific stuff!! Thank you
Thanks ever so much my friend!! Happy New Year!
Used to have 813B's in my 10x25 converted garage studio
that's crazy, you can here the video audio change when you went to the cork room. Pretty cool
Hi James, agreed! Great sounding room!! Happy New Year!
Fun video Warren - thanks! Does the phrase 'kid in a candy store' ring a bell? ;)
anonagain haha yes indeed my friend! Happy New Year!!
I like the background music while he's given the studio gear tour it's sort of porn-ish very tasty very appropriate nicely done
Haha thanks! Happy New Year!
Well, it IS (arguably) "gear porn" (albeit with no disrobing), so... Totally appropriate :P
Better than porn
Hey Warren, love your videos! I just watched a really interesting video about Capitol Studios (Capitol building in LA.). Would love to see you guys do a studio tour there (if possible).
Hi Warren. I noticed they we're using a CCTV system instead of having windows. Do you happen to know what type of cameras they are using to achieve low latency? We've considering doing away w/ our windows for acoustic purposes and just going w/ cameras, but anything we've found seems to have latency. Thanks for another great interview. Ron Flack, Canton Ohio
at the beginning the background music was nice but from the mic section on it got sooooo annoying. Maybe you only use it on certain parts? would make it more interesting Warren. Just some positive criticism, love all your videos, didn't miss a single on so far.
Hi Alexis, sorry to hear the music bothered! I really appreciate your positive comment! That means a lot and shows your class!! Happy New Year!
i really like these even though they make me sad that ill never see a real studio...this is the next best thing thanks for posting
Kip! I'm sure you will get to use one my friend!! Let's work on that!
52:14 Release the choke! I have those same bells. I call them "tubular bells." Am I wrong?
what was the reasoning by putting those two sm7's above the kit like that?
Tim will have to respond to that one my friend!
Get rid of the background music... Pleeease!
When does he have time to be spider man?
Man, that 4300hz tone get annoying quickly. 😬
Great video. I love studio tours. All the vibe of the rooms and the gear that was used to produce great music and recordings is simply amazing. Thank you, Warren. I guess if I worked in a place like this I wouldn't spent much time home ;-)
Thanks ever so much Marc!! Happy New Year!
Love the Studio Tour. You need to do one of the old Detroit studios
I would love to Paul!! Happy New Year!
Love studio tours. I know how songs go but it's always interesting to see how they came.
I once had a mint condition Gretsch New Yorker with the original tape wound strings that I bought for $75. It was fun to have around but in hindsight, that guitar would have been a good candidate for a Baxendale rebuild. I traded the guitar for a minty '64 Fender Vibro-Champ. People said it was a boneheaded move. It turned out to be the opposite. There's something very special about that amp and folks literally stand in line to use it in their studio recordings.
Hi David, marvellous comment! I agree, if you get more joy from something then the money is irrelevant! Happy New Year!
The best studio tour yet!
15:02 About to put the coffee on the mixer. Immediately changes his mind
Haha funny! Happy New Year!
😅 The other part that gave me anxiety was when Warren put the coffee on the carpet. There are not many people in the world who are allowed to do that :D
Great to see inside Eric Valentine's Studio!
Happy New Year! Apple!!
Wow! Every bit as blown away as I was finding out about the Unfairchild! ...and the space!
HI Audrey! I agree! Happy New Year!
Another great show Warren! The Unfairchild is a badass piece of gear...Any luck pulling that 5150 tour off? Thanks mate!
I want one sooo bad! haha Happy New Year!
Great video again, fun to watch. Thank you Warren! Are these adam-monitors beside the ns10's?
Thanks ever so much Mac! Happy New Year! Yes, they are Adam's I believe!
@Tim O'Sullivan adams A7x on their sides…I tried that for a long time…finally stood them upright as intended due to the ribbon tweeter sound . If you look at the wave guide they’re intended to be upright, not on the side. I mean you can…but the wave guide tells you their intended ideal position
Super interested in the Clockworks era gear from Eventide. Was looking for the 910, the original pitch shifter. All of this, before my time. Thanks Warren.
Thanks I agree! I always wanted one of those 910's! Happy New Year!
The moment I saw it my eyes were glued to that Red Special clone. Then I realized you were literally frozen in place staring at it. 😂
YES!! Me TOO!! Haha Happy New Year!
Dillion player here Warren. He makes great playing replicas with his own twist. He is in California, look him up.
I've seen a few walk-throughs of Barefoot and love the fact that it always look s like a working space rather than a polished-wood sculpture. Oh - and sounds magical.
Agreed 100% Andi! That's exactly what I love about it as well!
Yet another studio tour! Great!!!
Thanks Krešimir!
Love studio tours!
So nice to see what others are working with!
I was thinking the same thing
I agree 100% James! That's a b ig reason why I do these for myself! Haha Happy New Year!
Thanks Chris! Happy New Year!
Great stuff Warren and Tim! Great way to start the new year ;). I'm about half way through and it's giving me GAS. Love the way the studio has just been modded structrually as and when sounds have been needed for certain things. We're lucky enough to have a couple of UTA MPEQ's in the studio and I bloody love em, the console must be a beauty! Keep up the good work
Thanks ever so much Adam! I am so happy be able;e too start it like this!! Happy New Year!
@Produce like a pro, Hey very great video, I am in the process of upgrading my recording studio from digital to analog and I need a little help with a analog chain for rap vocals and R&B. I mainly just record vocals. My question is what is the best chain that I can invest in starring with the mic, mic preamp, compressor, EQ desser. Really need help so I don't purchase $5,000 dollars worth of gear and the quality isn't what I'm looking for. Looking for professional vocal recording equiptment. Can you help?
That tip of using the mic guard to control the back side of a ribbon mic is gold..
Yes! It sounded wonderful on Room mics when I did it!!
Hi Warren
Not sure if I’ve commented from my other account (MrRmuse) yet, but I seriously enjoy your studio tour/interviews.
In fact, when I’m quick enough, I’ve found and purchased some brilliant pieces of kit that were previously unknown to me - and before their value increased. In particular there is one compressor I’m not mentioning here because I want a couple more at a reasonable cost. Anyway, thanks and I hope everyone in this special community has a positive and prosperous New Year.
Thanks ever so much Ron! You Rock! Happy New Year!
Does Tim have a black eye? It definitely looks like it, especially towards the end. I hope his wife (or someone) is not beating him! I'm really so very concerned. This was an amazing video, otherwise. Warren is such a genius as well! So much gear.......whew
Love the video! But Warren, you hit the tubular bells wrong.... You have to hit it on the top end, I know, you are a guitar player ;-)
Haha yes I AM a guitar player! Haha Definitely not a Tubular Bells player! Haha Happy New Year!
I missed your studio tour videos so much what a great way to start the year. Did you reach out to Darrian Rundall of Mo Punch Studios as I suggested last year? He does a lot of punk stuff too so I am sure Cameron knows him.
Hi Rafael, Happy New Year! Please let Darrian know I'd be interested in seeing his studio! We get little overwhelmed here with not only filming but making records too! I love bingo able to help people showcase their studios!
@@Producelikeapro I spoke to him and he's interested how do I get you his email so u two are able to connect? Please excuse my RUclips ignorance
the collective cringe of every person who has played orchestral bells when Warren started banging on the tubes. It's just a reminder we're always learning.
I imagine what is labeled “Joseph Tom microphone” in the video is actually a Josephson 42?
You're probably right! Happy New Year!
This isn’t just a studio, it’s a bloody compound. Absolutely massive gorgeous space. In my dreams, I would live above the studio in a loft apartment and then would take a private elevator down to the studio in the morning to make music.
Haha indeed! Paradise!! Happy New Year!
6:49 Yeah man, we could definitely tell the difference between the rooms because of the sound insulation.
The first room insulated with cork was crazy to hear. That was a really well insulated room with such little voice reflection. It sounded so nice.
I agree 100%! Happy New Year!
Where was the theme music in the intro? It's ok. I sang in my head anyways.
What an amazing space. Thanks for the quality content Warren!
I agree 100% my friend! Happy New Year!
Amazing outboard ! Thamks for sharing those gems
Could cork really be used as soundproofing material?
Love the studio tours! Nice job Warren.
Thanks ever so much! Happy New Year!
Which model of Yamaha acoustic is great for recording?
I love the Yamaha LL16!
@@Producelikeapro cool thanks!
Nice visit! this is Aladdin's Cave for audio lovers :)
Agreed! Amazing studio! Happy New Year!
This guy just loves to name drop and live in the past
Yah...studio tour! Inspirational.
Thanks ever so much! Happy New Year!
@@Producelikeapro Many happy returns man.
steelwiz Thanks my friend here’s to an amazing 2019!
Good to see we are still into the underground thing.
We love all music!! Happy New Year!
Great fist 2019 video. OMG all of that great gear wow! sadly a young cat at a prestigious audio school just told me all of that gear is irrelevant and a waste of time energy and money.
Makes you want to slap somebody. haha lol!
Thanks ever so much my friend! Happy New Year! It is what it is! There are 'experts' everywhere who always know best!
is homeboy wearing a little league jacket ?
Thanks for the thorough studio tour, and thanks to Tim and Joe for their gracious hospitality!
Thanks Tom!! You Rock! Happy New Year!
Oh wow!! Those ADR Stresser's. I spent ages learning those. So good, but so temperamental... Ours were really quite noisy too.
OMG... this place has some uber cool stuff from the past!!
Hi I jests love it I love to sing you all or doing a good and bless job
I LOVE THESE!!
Thanks Baxter!! They're fun to do! :)
30:40 that´s a Grabber(G-1) not a Ripper
Wow! What an incredible tour. These are always super to watch and hear the subtle differences in room sound captured by your microphone. You can just drop me off in Studio B and let me camp out there until the Spring. LOL!
I would emerge a new man with new music ideas. Thanks for sharing Warren. Cheers!
Thanks ever so much Damian!! You Rock!! Happy New Year!
Wow, what a studio. I don't think I'd ever get anything done there, just trying the different instruments could take a lifetime! :) Thanks Warren and thanks Tim.
I agree! Got to love a studio where there is so much amazing equipment!!
Gear doesn´t excite me as it used to. Guess is a good thing?
I still love it! However, I understand! Happy New Year!
@@Producelikeapro Happy new year to you too, Warren! :)
Thanks Julian!
oh oh, Warren be gettin' down onda bass !!
to go to all the big ones you got to love it thank you Warren .
Thanks Dan!! Happy New Year!
I love that you know what you're looking at, you've used the stuff, and you can go through and talk a little about using a lot of the gear. Its fun to watch the kids who are excited about it all, but it's like a huge comfort blanket watching a channel where the guy is a veteran that's not caught off guard, and is exhibiting the appropriate amount of excitedness.
Thanks ever so much for your great comment!!
You're supposed to play orchestral bells at the top! You can damage them by hitting the side of the tubes...
Indeed Will! I'm not an expert! Luckily the way I tapped them wouldn't have hurt a fly! Happy New Year!
A Mazing Studio!
Thanks Darlene! Happy New Year!
Awesome studio tour! As a producer/engineer this is the kind of place I would love to have one day. Thank you for showing us Warren!
I agree 100%! Amazing studio!! Happy New Year!
you made a studio nerd stand in the sun
I’ve never clicked on a video so fast...
Warren, you’ve got quite the circle of friends!!! Keep doing what you are doing, and if you could swing an interview with Shawn Everett, I’d be even more grateful.
Thanks ever sop much Isaac! You Rock my friend!!
When you are creating Pro Tools sessions - do you bus your groups (e.g Drums Sum) to a single Aux send or use multiple Master Faders or a combination?
Marvellous question! For Hybrid through my console I use Master Faders, for in-the-box I use groups! Happy New Year!
I used to own that Roland Vocoder.
Fantastic! That exact one! Haha Where is it now?
Produce Like A Pro I sold it to a guy in the UK
Warren I love your passion! If the world went under the sea I swear you would have your favourite limiter just under one arm, and swimming with the other! Much appreciate your generosity and sharing, Iv learnt so much thanks to you! cheers
Hahaha funny!! I'm so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thanks Warren, awesome studio. I love my cranesong STC8 ... it’s good to see they have one too!
Yes, people love that unit! I hope you're well Steve!
I really enjoyed the tour. I started recording on open reels. I wanted to go to Wally Hyders recording school back in 76. It never happened.
That would have been a great experience at Wally Hyder's!
18:00 If you listen to Angel by Massive Attack you can hear that same flanger technique on the snare.
Wonderful! Thanks ever so much
Hey Warren thanks for another studio tour, I hate to be that guy but the Space Station is made by Ursa Major
Thanks for letting us know! Happy New Year!
Warren. Just wanted to say thank you for what you give that you don't have to. Happy 2019.
Wow Bad Monkey Music Productions thanks ever so much!! Happy New Year!!
Yes songs for the deaf. So many of the best sounding albums.
Yes, incredible recording!! Happy New Year!
37:25 = Josephson C42
Thanks Bernard!! Happy New Year!
That’s awesome 😎 I like the fact that it looks like a working studio. Other studio tours looks so neat and perfect.
Exactly!! Happy New Year!
58:27 I believe "Dual Concentric" is a Tannoy trademark; the generic name for those is coaxial speakers (or drivers).
Haha. Toată lumea face greșeli, nu suntem la fel de perfecți ca tine, prietenul meu! Iti doresc toate cele bune!

Hi Warren, loves the tour! What was the tom mic you mentioned learning about in Nashville. The description in the video said “Joesph Tom Mic,” but I can’t find anything about them online. Thanks! And Happy New Year!

Awesome! Thanks, Warren. Love the channel. I learn a TON from your vids. Thanks!

33:29: I'd love to get my hands on one of those vintage Astatic bullet mics. It's the Holy Grail for harmonica players. (I know the capital of Assyria, so I'm one up on the old man at the bridge.)
49:33: I can hear my grandfather's voice in my head, "You valk aroundt da house barefoot? You'll catch cold!"
46:44: The Kirk, Spock, Bones and company poster makes me want to record here someday for no other reason than that. I can hear Bones's voice in my head, "Damn it, Jim! I'm a doctor, not a recording engineer!" I can also hear my grandfather's voice again, "Vhat are vatchingk? Star Drek? Dat's not real. It's fantasy!"
I dig these studio tour vids. They're kind of long, so I have to set aside time to watch them, but it's well worth it.
Thanks Adam! Yes, I love this studio! Amazing place!
Or as Mr. Spock would say, it's "fascinating". 😁🖖
