Hi Friends, Ryan Hewitt is not only an easy going guy to hang out with he also happens to be a badass Producer, Engineer and Mixer! Ryan was born to make music with his Father David Hewitt one of the industries best Engineers who pioneered Mobile Recording, he grew up around recording music eventually Engineering and Mixing Grammy Winning Albums himself! Check out this video as we talk with him about his career and his new studio located in Nashville in the House Of Blues Studio Complex in Berry Hill.
If all you had were just the sticks from Stewart Copeland and Charlie Watts, it would be enough to die a very happy camper. All of the other sticks are very sweet icing on the cake. This was one of my favorite interviews and studio tours yet. Completely awesome!
"Yeah, it sounds like it looks; you put a guitar thru it, it sounds like a kazoo." Beautiful! I really enjoyed this interview, and - as always - it's a trreasure-trove of general and specific gear info.
Thanks for taking time out to do these vids. So enjoyable to watch. Being 60, I grew up listening to all the great music of our time and hearing the stories behind them is so fascinating .
Re the English Neve's - Studio 1 at Air Studios. It was custom built for Air (different frequencies on the EQ amongst other things & remote mic amps located in the live room) and then later had the Focusrite ISA110 modules added to make it a 72 channel console. A beautiful desk in a great room which I had the privilege of helping install in 1994.
I started with PLAP watching all the interviews a couple of years ago... still my favourite part of the channel. And this one is just absolutely amazing! So inspiring. Thanks for bringing this out Warren!
Hi Warren, I've watched a lot of your interviews and this one was one of my favorites. I love the attention you have towards the gear in your interviews. Its pleasant to watch these interviews. They give me a lot of confidence in my decision making when it comes to figuring out what gear to buy and what works best for me on difference instruments and sources. Thank you again for everything you do. Cheers -Mike
Interesting that I’ve seen those blue Bell Howell cabinets over the last 6 months. My father found one when I was a teenager over 20 years ago at a flea market for $3. I played it for a long time and now my co-guitarist in the band I’m in plays through it with a 2x12. Still sounds great and unique.
Hey Warren what is the difference in quality of recording at 24bit 44.1Khz vs 24 bit 48Khz? I can't hear it. Ryan is cool. I met him at WLA Music a few years ago and learned from his talk there.
Without any further processing, it's mostly impossible to hear a difference. As soon as you start processing, especially distortion/saturation, you will hear the plugins react very differently from 2k up. The signal gets some aliasing when pushed, this is why some plugins offer oversampling to reduce these artifacts. However, aliasing is not always a bad thing... Many hip-hop producers are using heavy aliasing effect to color their sounds. Many plugins react differently at different samplerate. For me, with what I'm using and many many analysis, I prefer 48k and some oversampling here and there. JJP prefer 44.1k over 48k... I honestly think that you need to test for yourself, with your rig, prefered plugins, etc... Otherwise, it falls into a debate that never ends.
Another great interview Warren. Although the tips and reviews are awesome, I personally enjoy these videos, and have found some brilliant gear after seeing them In studio tours. I’m a old school dinosaur and 1,000 percent with Ryan: “I like things going through electronics.” It’s true that software “emulates” a signal passing through wire, transistors, valves and transformers, but as good as plugins are these days, they are still just emulations. Anyway, thanks for sharing and keep up the stellar productions.
This was the BEST Interview!!!! I loved your interactions and flow. BRAVO, From now on I'm going to refer to Ryan Hewitt as Ryan Reynolds, he is just so funny and personable, Fantastic!!!! His nightmare mixing story is legend, I rewatched it 3 times and am going to show it to my clients this weekend, Kudos to you and Ryan. If I weren't an engineer I would send my stuff to Ryan, and in fact if someone wants a better mix that I can't give, I'm gonna suggest Ryan. Crazy good!!!!
I have a pair of the Bell & Howell projector speaker extension cabs. They have old 32 Ohm 12" Jensens in them. Killer sounding. I them got for $10 each in an auction. Nobody, but me, knew they had early 60's Jensens so they didn't bid on them. They sound like late 50's early 60's Fender amps. Nice breakup without being too toppy. Keep an eye out, they are a great way to pick up excellent vintage speakers on the cheap. You can find them in resale shops sometimes.
Great interview. When you're locked in a studio 10 hours a day working these are the type of dudes you want to be working with. That concentration of studios in Nashville sounds like gear geek heaven. Very cool.
Brilliant stuff! But one question, what might be the Focusrite discussed at 1:07:10 ? Is is maybe voicemaster 2units high or trackmaster or tracmaster pro 1unit? Both are silver coloured.. just wondering.
I have to say these two guys are now my favorite engineers. Anyone involved with the peppers is bad ass. Hewitt and huart😎 this makes me want to write better so I can buy better gear .
Go Warren and team, Thanks for another great video. I love hear chats and studio tours. On a slightly unrelated note I have a (FAQ) question that it would be good if you could cover one day. When recording I tend to use 24 bit for quality reasons. However when bouncing a final master I always dither to 16 bit 44.1. Is this still for the best now CD's are slowly losing popularity and online content is on the rise? Basically what bit and sample rate is best for your final product and why?
Great insight thanks to both Mr. Huwitt's :-)... PS. RH is here in LA as I type... and yes he is kicking ass in the studio with artists we all know well. Clue: the bass player is good... real good. RH... sneak in an extra dB for our beloved bass player. Thank you.
That’s like back in the day of the dx7. People were finding moog and arp synths in dumpsters outside of studios. Also was it joe barresi who bought a load of la-2a’s for $200 from guitar center because no one wanted them
Ryan seems like a really cool guy who loves his craft! Great interview Warren and detail on his gear and choices for different usage. I was thinking throughout the video how much gear do you really need but I guess if one piece makes the difference and album or single does really well then all worth gold! I took mental notes and coming back to this one for referencing which plugins to check out based on his reasoning and yours as always, thanks for the information! Ciao, ALDO
Is it just me or Mr. Huart relay doesn't like UAD plugins for some reason? :) (no flame intended, absolutely love and respect your work and the channel!)
Dang, Ryan busted my secret way to score mics. I always troll eBay for oddball vintage mics on the cheap. You would be amazed at what is under the hood. Sometimes they are rebranded big name mics.
How I always wanted to understand this gear & be able to find someone who record my music by making it sound like I hear in my head 🤔 but i never found that person yet 😌
Hmm, I think I've found the hidden lesson here at around 57:00. The lesson, if you have some great gear, and want to keep it, don't owe money to other engineers/producers.
wow, doesn't get much nerdier than this one (I love it!). And who just spent 30 minutes on Allmusic trying to figure out who the infamous producer in this story is? This guy. and the secret is safe......but damn, I hate it when that kinds thing happens. Have never gotten anything quote as negligent as that, but yup, kinda been there too
I think the closest thing to that would be the Really Nice Compressor and that line of gear. They should just make a run of them that look like First Act brand stuff
I'm still laughing. But, boy, my childhood was so boring compared... Warren, you really don't have to do a fancy intro, but could you, please, release this one as a podcast? Please?
an authentic, clear-eyed professional. Kydos for speaking my mind!

The drums for my record were done in studio 1 on that never desk, best sounding drums I've ever heard, Ive felt privileged
That conversation is so chill. Love your videos Warren!
Thanks Jack! The conversation was so good we almost didn't stop! haha
I started with PLAP watching all the interviews a couple of years ago... still my favourite part of the channel. And this one is just absolutely amazing! So inspiring. Thanks for bringing this out Warren!

I would always record at the highest rate possible. Yes, Ryan rules!
48kHz takes up a bit more disk space :P

I love the channel but could you upload Ryan Hewitt's interview about the recording of Unlimited Love? Thank you very much!

Amazing - Loved every second of this video!! Thanks Warren!!!! Amazing to think pultecs @ $50 a piece....if only!
Dylan Dylan I know! Amazing to think there was a time when vintage gear was almost worthless!
That’s like back in the day of the dx7. People were finding moog and arp synths in dumpsters outside of studios. Also was it joe barresi who bought a load of la-2a’s for $200 from guitar center because no one wanted them
Excellent OP AMP swapping 🤔
Aphex exciters and BBE are rad !!!
Thanks ever so much Keith!

Is it just me or Mr. Huart relay doesn't like UAD plugins for some reason? :) (no flame intended, absolutely love and respect your work and the channel!)
Hi Drasko! Haha It's just you my friend! I actually just was talking to them today!!
Dang, Ryan busted my secret way to score mics. I always troll eBay for oddball vintage mics on the cheap. You would be amazed at what is under the hood. Sometimes they are rebranded big name mics.
Haha I hear you! I realise that every episode we do pushes vintage equipment prices higher and higher! Haha
How I always wanted to understand this gear & be able to find someone who record my music by making it sound like I hear in my head 🤔 but i never found that person yet 😌
That was a good one. Interesting stories and gear.

GOTTA HAVE A DER D BOX!!!!!
what is the Tom Petty song that was mixed through 2 1176s?
What I will take away from this video is: Rules are There To Be Broken, or in other words, If it Sounds Good, it is Good. Simple!
He has his own "white cone in a black box"! RH 10 :D:D
Haha yes, the RH10!!
wow, doesn't get much nerdier than this one (I love it!).
And who just spent 30 minutes on Allmusic trying to figure out who the infamous producer in this story is? This guy. and the secret is safe......but damn, I hate it when that kinds thing happens. Have never gotten anything quote as negligent as that, but yup, kinda been there too
I’m very interested to know who the unnamed big time producer that goosed that track is. The suspense is killing me
Someone needs to make a "My First Compressor" branded compressor. :-)
That's an exceptionally good idea!
I think the closest thing to that would be the Really Nice Compressor and that line of gear. They should just make a run of them that look like First Act brand stuff
Yes, indeed Cameron. That's a great compressor!
I'm still laughing. But, boy, my childhood was so boring compared...
Warren, you really don't have to do a fancy intro, but could you, please, release this one as a podcast? Please?
Haha yes, definitely Jürgen!
Mad convo ❤. Warren please , if you stumble across any £50 quid pultecs save one for me 😅😂😂😂
Ha great stuff….
you guy's profiles are almost identical..lol
Haha maybe he is my long lost brother? Haha
