Hi Friends, after my last visit to Vintage King a few weeks ago I had an overwhelming response for people asking us to focus on 500 Series Compressors and EQs! So due to popular demand we went back to Vintage King and here are the results! Special thanks to Matt Knobel for showing us around and running through the gear with us! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
You should have pushed the warm button in at the Elysia Expressor to get the couloration. That unit can be clean or can give you couloration and therefore it has the warm button.
Great stuff FrancisJoa! Thanks for letting me know! Loved the way the Elysia Expressor sounded! Do you have one? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks Darlene! I agree 100%! Vintage King are extremely generous to show us around and let us demo all of this great equipment! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Wow....GREAT show. Thank for listening. What a tour! Many thanks Vintage King! I keep miss the part of conversation about 500 power. Can you give me a time marker Warren? Thanks in advance.
I've got the Elysia Xpressor and love it. It can be about as transparent as it gets, and it is designed with such useful features. There is also the "warm" mode if you don't want to be as transparent. It gives the high end a subtle fuzz, and a little low end bump as well.

Great! Extremely glad to be able to help! It was so much fun to move from one unit to another on the same source and hear the difference! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
What a great video! Never really used my smart research C2 as a drum bus compressor before, just on my mix bus. This video has given me some cool inspiration. Loving the Obsidian compressor a lot.
Hi Dwayne, I'm going to make the audio clips available for you to download so you can hear what we were doing. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks very much! I really wanted to be able to do this, so thank you ever so much to Vintage King for letting us use them to show off all of this amazing equipment! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
That Elysia made me tingle. I never really heard Elysia stuff before, but that compressor did something to my soul. I think I'm going to have to have one in my summing chain.
Hi Warren. I use the Elysia Xpressor 500 and love the versatility. It's become a go to on drum buss and stereo buss. I agree that it doesn't colour but it can offer a wide range of solutions.
Hi Lee, you rock my friend!! I love your mixes, so that says a lot! The Elysia seems to be exceptionally popular! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Loved it but I was wondering why you guys went right by the Rupert Neve 551 Inductor EQ. Awesome job Warren. More please. Just got the Bettermaker c502v compressor and it is a smokin piece of gear. Thanks again Warren...
I tried the Elysia Alpha Compressor in a mastering studio in L.A . I felt in love immediately, they were around 12k at the time. Thank God the 500 series exist 🥲
The Purple Tav does NOT share a circuit with the API 560, the Tav uses 11 inductors somewhat similar to a sphere graphic. The 560 used a gyrator circuit, the difference is musicality at boost, 560 gets harsh, Tav does not. Both useful tools, but very different.
Hi Purple Audio LLC! Thanks ever so much for the inside information! I really appreciate it! I love the Purple Equipment! The MC77 in particular is truly amazing! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, awesome video ! I have the tk audio BC501 bus compressor and I love it, great for glueing the mix. thank you great video like always . you have a great day .
Hi Allan, I was really impressed with the TK! Afterwards I saw the price and I was even more impressed! The whole se;cation of bus compressors was amazing! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
The TK stuff is awesome, certainly for the price, like you said. Their TK-Lizer "bax" style eq is great too. 3 bands, m/s functionality built in. They just came out with it in 500 series as well!
I agree Adam, unbelievable for the price! I'll have to check their EQ as well! Thanks for the great tip! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, this is so cool! Especially for people like me who live in Australia, we just don't have a place like Vintage King to go and visit. When funds become available to me I'll be looking into a lunchbox and I'll thankfully have these videos to come back to. Thanks again for this amazing resource!
Hi AJay, aw shucks thanks very much! You Rock! Vintage King should have a branch in Australia! I'm working with a wonderful artist from Australia called Ashleigh Watson, the song is turning out amazing! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks very much! So glad you enjoy the videos! Haha you know me I might very well end up with a 4 hour video! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hey Warren! This video was super helpful! A lot of guys (yourself, andrew scheps, etc.) mention that young guys (such as myself) making records in the box should really focus on what is going on in their recording chain on the front end. I'm currently shopping through 500 series mic pres and channel strips, but its hard to decide on these kinds of things without trying them/hearing them. All that to say, I would love a mic pre and channel strip episode if possible! thanks for the dozens of helpful videos you've put out, I benefit tremendously from them, and so do many of my friends!
Hi Spencer, that would be wonderful! I agree, focusing on mic pres would be great for a future episode!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Warren. Thank you so much for all the great videos. Really informative, helpful and inspiring. I’ve been looking into the phoenix stuff for a mid forward flavor. Anyway thanks again
Thank You to you and Matt from Vintage King for doing this, great as always. I have seen a few good clean consoles which were enhanced shall we say with 500 style racks . Years ago none of this existed, and now we have the value price of a 500 style rack. So Cool... Hava Nice Day...
Great video as usual Warren. I have to say I had been kind of ignoring the 500 format, thinking I would go full rack or looking as desks ... but hearing the ssl eq's and compressor and the Elysia expressor I was very impressed! Time to crunch the numbers! 😃
Hi Terry, that's great to hear that it's so helpful! That's exactly what we were trying to achieve! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This was great! I'm just now getting started with 500 series modules and this was really informative. Just bought a radial EXCT reamper! My first module. Would love to see more videos like this. Maybe some of the effect modules as well; such as the Meris, Zvex, and Earthquaker stuff. I really enjoy your content!
Always downsizing and the 500's are looking more the way to go, the maag sounded mwaaaa and although the obsidian is awesome it's price is ouch!!! An excellent vid Warren ! I want them all!!!!!
HI Matthew, I agree! 500 series is extremely convenient! Yes the Maag and Obsidian sounded great! All of them had great characteristics! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thank you SO much Warren Huart! I have the Elysia EQ. The "low cut" button is also on the highs ("hi cut"). What is does is changes the shelves into filters and the gain knob then acts as a resonant peak boost like on a synth filter. Elysia is like the Swiss Army Knife company haha! So many functions, all quality. I bought it from Matt. Him an I are looking into getting me some Barefoot monitors right now. I have narrowed Vintage King down to my favorite dealer ;)
Hi Drew, wow thanks for your insight! That's really amazing! I'm sure VK and Matt are very happy to hear they are you love working with them! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I am trying desperately to choose my monitoring set-up, but I don't have a Vintage King-type shop in my area. A monitor comparison in their critical listening room would be so helpful for those of us choosing between Adam, Genelec, Focal, ATC, Barefoot, etc... There are so many of us who are trying to eq and set compressors from out Yamaha HS8 or KRK monitors but just can't hear what's going on! I want to buy a couple nice sets of headphones and monitors but don't know what's what, not having much experience with them all.
Hi Drew, wow I completely understand! I am a bit of a Genelec and Unity fan (I have both) On Monday we tracked Cheap Trick using Barefoot's and they translated really well, but I missed on Genelecs and Unity's. The new Genelecs and the Unity Super Rocks are fantastic! The Barefoot's have a lot of fans amongst people I know! I think between those three companies you won;t go wrong! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Love this episode Warren, just pure awesomeness. But boy is that salesman heavy-handed with the threshold, compressing absolutely everything to mush....but I'll guess he's exaggerating a bit to show the character of the different units.
Thanks Warren and Vintage King! Learned a lot! Letting us hear what equipment does is, I think, so fundamental in speaking this awesome language! Many, many thanks!
Yay! Agreed! It was fantastic of Vintage King to let us listen to all of these great pieces of equipment! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks as always Warren! In the closing shot, the rack of Radial stuff in the lower left...would LOVE to hear some of that stuff. There's not much to be found online of samples of it, but it's very intriguing!
Great video. Glad to see examples of what some of the 500 series that I have heard of but not been able to try sound like. I know they are all great for a certain instruments and application. I also want to make it to VKA some time in the near future. Thanks to Warren for being a great person and taking time to put info out for us.
OUTSTANDING my friend!! This is my next move is to get a 500 series chain for my project studio. That last eq is a must have, what it did for those vocals 🤌🏼
Great video Warren, what would be a nice stereo eq and compressor combination for mixing when going out of the box if someone wants to get that ssl or neve sound ?
Hey! Did I miss the chat about power supply on the 500 series... Warren thanked the kind chap from VK for clearing it up, but I didn't catch it, maybe it was edited. I guess it's not worth going budget on the rack... Any tips?? API... Better start saving! Thanks
Incredible videos Warren, videos like this are more valuable than almost anything - as these are units I personally look into all the time but never get to actually try
You're welcome Caleb! I had a wonderful time with Matt, he really was extremely helpful! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Very nice and informative video, thanks Warren - loved it! TK makes some amazing gear, i would love to hear there DP1mk3.... Also gotta love the API EQs! Thanks and keep it going, all the best from Berlin, Germany
Thanks very much for your kind words! I'm so glad we have such an amazing community, many great friends in Germany! Berlin is a wonderful City! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks for the great overview! Unrelated question: what did you think about the Audeze headphones? I'm seriously considering the LCD-X which doesn't really need an external amp. For remote mixing sessions that could be really great. Love to hear your thoughts.
Hi Danny, honestly, completely blown away! That was one of my songs that I recorded and I had never that much detail in it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Dwayne, that's Chase K's song 'Gone', we've used Chase for a few things now. He's a great young artist! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This is awesome Warren! Thank you for doing this sir. I am in the market for getting some 500 series stuff and haven’t decided yet and this helped out a lot! Your the man Warren. Cheers sir!
I'm loving this! I'm really looking forward to your speakers video (I've been interested in hearing the Focal Trio 6 be, the Neumann KH310 and some Amphions for a while now). Thanks Warren and VK, I hope this could become a fairly regular thing!
Yes, that seems to be quite a lot of people who've fallen in love with that equipment!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks Warren and Matt. Much appreciated! Good format; useful, interesting. Great audio quality, able to hear the differences clearly. Looking at EQ soon so it's great to hear them in action. I have the Elysia Xpressor: very flexible, takes time to learn the several sweet spots...SSL-style 'smack' is possible but (in a good way) a bit politer. Best : -)
Hi Arthur, thanks very much for your kind words! Glad to be able to help! Very impressed with everything we tried! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
On the point near the end about 500 series consoles, there's a Premier Guitar video on RUclips where they visit Steve Vai's Harmony Hut studio. He talks about buying his console and why he went down the 500 route. ...and Warren you would love the guitars
Hi Adam, yes that's wonderful! It's great to see companies like SSL making consoles with 500 slots in them! Very smart! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Would love to have a revisit with so many new options available. Perhaps focused on the home recordist market? (Doesn't have to be though! Seeing hwat is out there is great.)
31:4251:39 hello everybody... i want to get a 500 EQ for my KickDrum recording... and i am undecided between one of the APIs and the SSL611... im sure that both of them would do the job great but... when i compare both in the slate-plugin version i do like the API a lot more... though my budget tells me to rather go with the SSL... any suggestions? Thx, Martin
I just purchased and assembled a CAPI 11 module 500 rack. Does anyone have module recommendations? I would preferably like to stick with DIY modules but I’m also interested in “must have” suggestions. Thanks! And as always great work and thanks to Warren! 👍
The C1LA has internal and external side chain filtering...Its an amazing sounding unit but also about lol 1k more than the TKaudio ..... if anyone wants a mix knob for any comp/anything def look at the TK audio Lil Blender its 500 series also with a very simple design... Ha it would be amazing to hook some Lil Blender's to a patch bay and give all your gear a Wet/Dry feature Ha... Just started the video..Man thank you so much for this !!
Hi warren, I love your videos, you have a great style and get right to nuts and bolts of gear! I loved what the maag did to the vocals! Wow.... Thanks for your dedication to music and getting advice out to aspiring producers. Keep,it real" 👍
Hi Stu D, thanks ever so much for your kind words! Yes the Maag sounds amazing!! Those were already processed vocals and it brought them even more!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Sven, agree the Kush stuff is amazing and we will be back for a second video very soon I'm sure! Haha Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Zack, great question! 1k is pure midrange so it's slap bang in the middle, so I would guess that's why they label it like that? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I do rap music. I'm looking the get AMS Neve 1073 external mic preamp. what would be the best 500 series compressor and EQ to get to the best recording?
Doing Rap....the SSL Pre, Comp & EQ would be the best and most accurate for the genre. When you get a chance to save up some money, an Avalon 737 and/or Distressor will both be your best friends as far as preamps as well. But most immediately SSL/Distressor/Avalon combination is the sound we all know and love in hip hop
I love bus compression when the songs are up tempo, but I dont like it so much when the songs are slow tempo..I think slower songs sound better when they're a little dynamic and not so compressed..
I agree completely. Slow songs with a lot of space between notes and space between transients, do not need to be "glued" together. It doesn't sound musical or good in any way to me to squash a singer/songwriter ballad with compression.
hi, Warren. Thank you so much for this great video. May I ask a question? What would you choose for acoustic guitar? I am guessing the pultec would be really good for that, but I'd like you opinion. :-)
That's a fantastic question! Yes, I probably would use the Pultec on an Acoustic I had recorded and was mixing, however if I wanted a more surgical EQ to correct things then something sweepable might be more applicable! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Very cool. Never really heard the C1 500 series. That sounded sweet. Different take on the SSL Bus Compressor and it has that sound too. I wish you had audio that we could hear with and with out and be able to do comparisons in our own studio. They might want to think about setting up their site to do that. May help in sells. Great job Warren!!! Keep going man.
Hey Warren, by the way, I created a test between the SSL XLogic Hardware unit and all the SSL plugins from Waves to Duende to the Glue and so on. You might want to check it out and see if you can hear the difference. www.gearslutz.com/board/gear-shoot-outs-sound-file-comparisons-audio-tests/1110717-ssl-bus-compressor-one-hardware-test.html#post12117781
Maybe the LCD head phones should have been called OCD? (haha).---- Hey, let me know if you ever hear Joe Barresi has a garage sale! What's that thing on top of the 500 rack cabinet? It looks cool.Awesome vid. Always appreciated. I've got to get myself over there.
Hi Loren, haha yes the OCD's! They are really amazing sounding headphones! I will have to check what that unit is on top of that rack! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Diego! I believe you are 100% accurate! Thanks for letting us know! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi mr. Huart, nowadays I am curious about those 500 series modules. As far as I search I couldn’t find any eq which has HPF and LPF (SSL style) even SSL eqs. And you know how HPF is essential to struggle against that low end rumble especially on kick and bass guitar, even on palm mutes in metal track. Thank you
what a crazy way to use the TK and Alan Smart 500 series compressors :( ....too much compression!!! the VK guy loves to kill the sounds!! hahaha and the C1 best ratio is 4:1 !! Thanks for the video tho!
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed the video! Haha start your own music store, that sounds a lot of work to me! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Warren - thanks as always for the great information. Quick question - you didn't try the Rupert Neve Designs 551 -- I was curious to see how this version compares to the 1073 EQ. Have a great day, Ryan
Hi Ryan, thanks ever so much for your kind words! Part two we will do more EQs! Matt had a client waiting for him and we were already running late! More to come my friend I promise! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks Ryan! That means a lot! I really appreciate your kind words! I love being able to respond to everyone, it's really important to me that we have such an amazing community! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I've owned all of those except the TK and they're all great boxes. I have the Obsidian in the rackmount version which I kept but sold the other units. The Smart is cool but I liked the Obsidian more - just more musical IMHO. The Xpressor is the most versatile of the group but doesn't add color which is usually what I'm looking for with an outboard compressor. I don't know why they didn't include the Alta Moda Hippo as that's an SSL clone that VK also sells. That one is my favorite SSL clone when you factor in price - it sounds great and the warmth control is great to use even if you're not compressing.
Hi rap freak, thanks for your great insight! I really appreciate the tips from someone who uses the gear every day! It really helps everyone out! You Rock! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hey Wazza, can you do few more videos like this again at vintage king? You guys really gotta slow down and not go through settings so quick so we can actually hear the units. So many cool units out now, you should capitalise on the 500 popularity
Hey Warren, I would really like if you could do a tutorial about cleaning a project in Protools. I'm always worried when I try to clean a session because I don't really understand what's going on exactly in the background. Anyway, I'm aware it's not very a general subject and would only concern protools users, it's just a suggestion. It would personally help me, maybe other?
That's a fantastic idea for a Tutorial!! I think I could definitely incorporate that into a tutorial! Thanks of the wonderful idea! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
You're welcome! I'm actually looking forward to this and hope it happens. I'm curious to know what happens to tracks that are deactivated when you clean the pool of clips and if Warren can offer some tips on how to do it properly and what exactly happens in the background and how to avoid losing clips from hidden tracks and what not.
Wow loads to cover CarcPazu! I am always happy to help my friend! Thanks for your great comments and all of your support! Your input is greatly appreciated! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Man, being in that room with all that gorgeous analog gear... wouldn't you just like to die?... LOL. For me, it's not about, (and never has been), a new car, or a boat, or expensive jewelry... it's a passion for gear just like this; the ultimate tone-shaping tools, from subtle to extreme textures, and everything in between. I'd love to work at VK. I can't imagine the level of knowledge one would gain ( no pun intended) by working with cats who all share the same passion for audio gear. If I lived closer, hell, I'd be happy to even just sweep their floors. ;)
Hi MrDonnyAir, haha I completely understand! I get teary eyed at times! haha Yes, VK is such a wonderful place and their staff are extremely helpful! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren ! Thanks for the video, great great stuff ! I was wondering ; You guys talked about SSL 500Series G-COMP compared to that great SmartResearch C1LA. Did you have the chance to hear SSL's 500 one ? I'm thinking about driving my upcoming studio project through an SSL_XL Desk especially for those 500 series slots and included SSL G comp. Any thought ?
Very timely and well-presented video. I run a small commercial media production company, mostly doing marketing and branding in the luxury real estate world. We've been kicking around the idea of a 500 series rack to get location sound for interviews and such instead of the standard field recorders. If I may make a request, it would be great to see of these 500 series product showcases with preamps. Cheers!
God bless you Warren, been waiting for video like this for years... it helps me make my decision in purchasing modules easier, recently bought the purple audio preamps and was looking for a compressor to pair it up, probably a dbx 560 or a retro instruments doublewide
Hi Zaki, you're welcome! I had an amazing time making this video with Matt at Vintage King! Those are all great suggestions! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Maag 10Khz magic is insane! This is insanely good on low freqs too! I should buy a api rack and just a maag for that magical boost. But I dont like the compressors with 500 format they lack punch beacuse of less power!
AllAboutTheTruth Not true if you get something that’s designed right from the bottom up. The purple rack has more juice than is necessary to power even the most demanding modules.
+Produce Like A Pro awesome! I had the thought that it'd be suuuuper cool to get an episode on monitors. I know that's tough, as the sound and feel can only truly be experienced in the room and it's different for each person's taste and application. But even some general thoughts/takeaways on a good selection would be sweet! Either way, you're great to be sharing this info as you do, thank you!
Hi Adam, I agree! Just figuring our ow that's going to translate for everyone to hear properly! My opinion is useful, but I'd like to think how we can make it as objective as possible and that's difficult! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Wow....GREAT show. Thank for listening. What a tour! Many thanks Vintage King! I keep miss the part of conversation about 500 power. Can you give me a time marker Warren? Thanks in advance.
This is the best on RUclips
A lovely conversation on 500 series
Very nice
I've got the Elysia Xpressor and love it. It can be about as transparent as it gets, and it is designed with such useful features. There is also the "warm" mode if you don't want to be as transparent. It gives the high end a subtle fuzz, and a little low end bump as well.

being very new to doing my own productions using software compressors and eqs, I mainly used this video to train my ear. thanks for the great lessons!
Great! Extremely glad to be able to help! It was so much fun to move from one unit to another on the same source and hear the difference! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This never gets old. I love this stuff! Thank so much, Warren.
Aw shucks thanks Franke!! You ROCK! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Such an awesome place Vintage King is! Being able to actually test all the different gear is so great! Great video Warren!
Hi Eric! I know! Everything is set up ready to go! Amazing!
This is the best. I've been waiting for a listening comparison video like this for a long time.
Thanks very much! I really wanted to be able to do this, so thank you ever so much to Vintage King for letting us use them to show off all of this amazing equipment! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
It's always funny to hear an EQ test on NS10.
_And now let's boost 40 Hz_
...nothing changes :)
Haha yes indeed!!

I tried the Elysia Alpha Compressor in a mastering studio in L.A . I felt in love immediately, they were around 12k at the time. Thank God the 500 series exist 🥲
That was one of my favorite episodes !
Cheers mate !
Fantastic Sad Puppy! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
one of the best videos that I've seen on a long time, this is what the people wants, congratulations and thank you very much
Many thanks Roger!! You Rock! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Hi Purple Audio LLC! Thanks ever so much for the inside information! I really appreciate it! I love the Purple Equipment! The MC77 in particular is truly amazing! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Glad you guys still make the mc77. It's fantastic, and has the best front plate on the market.

I agree Adam, unbelievable for the price! I'll have to check their EQ as well! Thanks for the great tip! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
The blend knob on the elysia is for parallel compression...
Yes, indeed!
Wow, looking forward to hearing more about Ashleigh!
Hi AJay, hopefully we will be able to feature the song in the Academy! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I love having one of the Vintage King stores near me in Detroit, get my gear super fast!!!
Love these Vintage King videos...keep 'em coming. If this was 3 hours long it would still be too short.
Thanks very much! So glad you enjoy the videos! Haha you know me I might very well end up with a 4 hour video! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Do it Warrent!
Hahaha It might just happen! Be careful what you wish for!
Thanks Wayne! Yes, special thanks to Matt for doing this with us! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks ever so much Steven!
Great stuff as usual Warren.
Great to hear these compressors and EQ's side by side!
Thanks very much! Yes I was so happy Matt did that!
Very nice! 24 of my 500 series racks are full so now I'm going to need another 10 slot rack. I like the Smart Comp and the Pultec the best!
amazing!!, can Warren or anyone tell me what's the problem with the energy ⚡ in the 500 series?
Love this episode Warren, just pure awesomeness. But boy is that salesman heavy-handed with the threshold, compressing absolutely everything to mush....but I'll guess he's exaggerating a bit to show the character of the different units.
im really enjoying the equipment comparisons mate, great stuff...keep them coming....much appreciated..thankyou
Thanks ever so much Marten!
Great point! Yes, Radial make great stuff! Will have to try some out!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
That was fantastic, I learned a lot.
Definitely like the Elysia stuff and the Phoenix eq.
Marvellous!! Thanks ever so much
Great video. Glad to see examples of what some of the 500 series that I have heard of but not been able to try sound like. I know they are all great for a certain instruments and application.
I also want to make it to VKA some time in the near future.
Thanks to Warren for being a great person and taking time to put info out for us.
Hi Don, I really appreciate your kind words! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Also I've using the API 560 on my sends to clean up into the reverbs and delays.
That's a great idea Matthew! I will have to try that myself! Thanks for the tip! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I always thought I'd never buy an outboard EQ with plugins...but that xfilter...wow
Fantastic!
Thanks
Hi moonrocks7, we are posting a separate video for it! Coming soon! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Did you ever release the 500 power video warren ?
Havent found it… do u have a link for that video? Thx, Martin
Incredible videos Warren, videos like this are more valuable than almost anything - as these are units I personally look into all the time but never get to actually try
Hi Matthew, wow, thanks very much for your very kind words! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This was awesome, guys!!! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks and keep it going,
all the best from Berlin, Germany
Danny Kim you just asked the question my wallet was avoiding........thanks.
Haha I hear you Robert!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, was wondering who the artist or band who's stems were used for the gear testing?
Hi Dwayne, that's Chase K's song 'Gone', we've used Chase for a few things now. He's a great young artist! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This is awesome Warren! Thank you for doing this sir. I am in the market for getting some 500 series stuff and haven’t decided yet and this helped out a lot! Your the man Warren. Cheers sir!
Thanks ever so much Mike!!
I like that Buzz tonic!
I'm loving this! I'm really looking forward to your speakers video (I've been interested in hearing the Focal Trio 6 be, the Neumann KH310 and some Amphions for a while now). Thanks Warren and VK, I hope this could become a fairly regular thing!
Thanks noisesoundtonevibe, I really appreciate it! More to come my friend! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Awesome video, Warren! I love the way the gear was presented along with the sound examples. I've fallen in love with the Elysia and Magg gear.
Yes, that seems to be quite a lot of people who've fallen in love with that equipment!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I agree !!
I second that emotion. I really wanted to hear the Maag against the 551.
That TK is something else!
The Xpressor 500 sounds amazing.
Thanks ever so much!
31:42 51:39 hello everybody... i want to get a 500 EQ for my KickDrum recording... and i am undecided between one of the APIs and the SSL611... im sure that both of them would do the job great but... when i compare both in the slate-plugin version i do like the API a lot more... though my budget tells me to rather go with the SSL... any suggestions? Thx, Martin
Awesome video. That Maag was so nice.
Thanks ever so much
Priceless video,thanx
Thanks very much! I appreciate your kind words! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Jay, thanks for your wonderful insight! Yes, the TK is very impressive! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi warren, I love your videos, you have a great style and get right to nuts and bolts of gear! I loved what the maag did to the vocals! Wow.... Thanks for your dedication to music and getting advice out to aspiring producers. Keep,it real" 👍
Agreed! Maag really got me thinking!
Hi Stu D, thanks ever so much for your kind words! Yes the Maag sounds amazing!! Those were already processed vocals and it brought them even more!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Agree Robert, I real show stopper for me! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks Warren! Told you: Elysia stuff is awesome, and cheap. The Xpressor 500 is retail € 766 in europe, so less than 1000 bucks in the US.
Hi Pascal, yes. Elise make amazing stuff! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
My question is are those 500 series as good or at per with the 19inch rack of same product and im talking in terms of sound quality
That’s on a case by case basis. Which ones are you looking at? I would say the ones listed at VK are all the highest quality
What did he say about the power in the 500 series? I must've missed that part and he mentions it at the end.
Yes, mee too! What did he say bout it?
Great vid as always Warren! But... When I saw the brown Kush Electra I started hoping that that unit would be tested as well. Any thaughts on it?
Hi Sven, agree the Kush stuff is amazing and we will be back for a second video very soon I'm sure! Haha Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hello Warren!
"I know, that I dont know anything." It was Sokrates, a greek philosopher
:) Btw, you are great and I love your personality so much!
I've heard some really great things from Elysia, but that Smart Audio C1LA made me RANDY!!
Agreed! Thanks ever so much
Many thanks for your informative videos! Marvellous! :)
Aw shucks thanks Louis!! You Rock! Glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I've always wondered: Why is the 1k on the 560 always red?
Great Video! Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Like that Obsidian 500...
Hi Carlo, thank you my friend! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thank you so much, Warren :-)
dude awesome another Vintage King tour video!! :)
Thanks very much! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
One of my fav vids of yours, and I don't even own any 500 series (yet).
Great point! The audio is coming very soon!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hey Warren, by the way, I created a test between the SSL XLogic Hardware unit and all the SSL plugins from Waves to Duende to the Glue and so on. You might want to check it out and see if you can hear the difference.

If I'm not mistaken... I believe that is a Retro Instruments OP-6 tube preamp ! (:
Hi Diego! I believe you are 100% accurate! Thanks for letting us know! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Wow, I like the xpressor!
Hi Louis, I know! Very impressive! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Yeah I have one it's incredible... Just playing songs through it opens the track up a lot, and tunable side chain its crazy no one knows about it
@@3star2nr Thanks ever so much
I find myself filling in that drum loop with the instruments and vocals from Open Our Eyes by Amplifico.
Thank you
Harrison, Crane Song
what a crazy way to use the TK and Alan Smart 500 series compressors :( ....too much compression!!! the VK guy loves to kill the sounds!! hahaha and the C1 best ratio is 4:1 !! Thanks for the video tho!
Yes, 4:1 is definitely the best on all SSl style bus compressors!
@@Producelikeapro Yep!!!!
Thanks as usual Warren. I think I need to open my own music store so I can try out all this goodness...
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed the video! Haha start your own music store, that sounds a lot of work to me! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Another Great Video!!
Aw shucks thanks The Mix Club!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks for this video about to start my 500 series want list
Hi Julian, great! So glad to be able to help!!
Warren - I hope you know hope much we appreciate that you take the extra time to read our posts and reply. Thank you for your time and knowledge :-)
Nice idea. Thank you!
I use the 550b and 560 for drums
So much A M A Z I N G gear !!
Hi Darlene, huge collection of amazing gear! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warre
what one of these eq's would fit well with acoustic guitars?
Lot's of fun!!!!
why did you not do the 551
Maag 10Khz magic is insane!
Thanks ever so much! We LOVE Maag!
Hi@@Greenmantislives
Aw man, the Rupert Neve Designs 551 eq got skipped. The world needs to know how sweet that EQ is! :) I really do love mine though.
Hi Adam, coming up in part two!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
