Mixing Engineer Matthew Weiss (Dizzee Rascal, Juicy J, MURS, Royce Da 5'9 and more) has recently moved to L.A. into a very nice studio. So I dropped by, we did an interview and a complete tour of his new studio. In this tour, we´ll show off and discuss the different uses of some amazing gear. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
The Keith Moon cymbal trick! Thank you for that info. I live to gleam these small but important bits of history and technique. Thanks to both of you great show. Enjoy the new digs Matt!
Produce Like A Pro Trust me Warren--once I get a set up going I am going to be one HUGE pain for you in the Academy :) Until then thank you so much for these posts and keeping the flame alive in my heart.
Matt is one of the best engineers in the world. You can always tell when someones a genius because they don't claim to be "clever". I remember watching this almost 3 years ago. Old but GOLD. Thumbs up again #552
Great hearing Matt's detailed thoughts on his racks of preamps and compressors. Also loved hearing your attack / release settings advice on the SSL bus compressor. That is invaluable information.
I love Matt's tutorials. He always goes deeply into concepts that might elude us otherwise, has a really fine ear, and the results are pretty dope. Great stuff. Thanks Matt and Warren!
I like how Matt is not afraid to admit he is eager to learn more on the actual instrument side of things. being in a studio like that would be easy to feed your ego and attempt to fake like you know everything.
In regards to the Rupert 5060 Centerpiece, Silk reduces the negative feedback on the output transformer, you can use the Texture knob to add more harmonic content. Silk Blue saturates the lows and low mids. Silk Red saturates the high-mids and highs.
Another great interview and tour. I'm glad you guys hung out for a bit at the end and got a little philosophical. In a way, that included a key take away for me to apply right now - a good reminder to trust my instincts and trust the process. Hard to put in words, but I think maybe something like experiment, put in the work, don't get stuck, stay open and stay alert for those feelings that tell you when something works!
In the arts: you are your brand. You have to do what makes sense and feels right to you, otherwise you're not participating in a creative art, you're waiting tables. The key to it is to do it without ego, which is sometimes easier said than done!
FYI, Blind Lemon (Jefferson) was an early blues artist probably best known for "See That My Grave is Kept Clean," which Dylan covered. Great interview.
That Altec is actually a 1592a solid state mixer. From what I understand it's like a six in one out mono mixer and has a power amp section for like an old PA. They have these individual transformer cans (that look like tubes) that plug into the back. Some have phantom power some don't and some are for line level blah blah blah. The Soundtoys Radiator is a model of a 1567a which is tube. I have a 1599a which is the little brother to the 1592a (same-ish circuit no VU meter) and those little preamp cans (1588a/b/c's) sound kind of cool and can get pretty hairy but definitely not tube-y. I also have a knack for near useless information if you couldn't tell.
when i watch these videos, Warren always reminds me of that neighborhood kid who would come over and go through all of your and your parents' stuff without asking, but you wanted him to like you so you were too afraid to tell him otherwise (^_^)
Hi Warren, a big thank you for all the great work you do and the truly inspirational people we get to enjoy through your videos. I have a question for you which I have struggled with over these past months. Just over a year ago I began investing in equipment for my own home studio, I wanted to take my passion to the next level and though I have good amps, mic's, monitors, guitars, computer and DAW, my audio interface was a basic Roland Quad Capture USB 2, which was a good entry level interface. However, I now want to make some forward progress and I am struggling to reach a decision on which interface I should now buy to replace the Roland. I want to go with a Firewire device but I'm hesitant and can't make a decision, so when I got in from work and opened my inbox it was good to find this email and video link, how appropriate, just where I am wanting to go with my music and maybe an opportunity to get some valuable advice concerning the choice of interface I should consider. I would very much like your advice Warren, Firewire 400/800, I/o - Brand, Model etc;,. Many thanks. Larry
Great question aronmore1! It really depends on your budget! There's many great interfaces to choose from! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
- Interview aside, the hat is quite charming, Warren, and in combination with the sideburns and loose-fitting 'callards' you are cutting quite a figure. How can anyone claim to be in 'the business' without a selection of Cockey hats? - Great advice about re-recording stuff for sub-standard mix elements VS faith in the producers recordings - always a fine line and discretion! - Amazing gear on show and really colourful insights into how they are used and what they sound like... - I would love a Rhodes - a really nice addition to any tracking room!
Start from the default position that the producer did what she/he did intentionally! Experience will dictate if the intention wasn't truly met in the execution, and if that's the case, re-create it. Either way, we cater to the producer's intention.
Thanks Joe!! Te hat is covering my BAD HAIR!! Haha I'm really glad you enjoyed the video! I had a great time talking to Matt and doing the studio Tour!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi...I was wondering about Matt's Sadowski bass, he said he got it from his Dad, and his opinion of Genelecs. Those were two things he started to talk about but didn't finish what he was saying. If you ever speak to him on camera again, maybe you could ask him about those two things. Thanks as always Warren!
He’s wrong about that Altec mixer being the model for the Radiator. The Radiator is modeled on Altec 1567 tube mixer and the one in his rack is solid state. It is I believe a model 1592 and uses 1588 octal socket mic preamps and is noisy but fun.
I watched another video and I was just wondering how the studio rack in the middle of the room is connected to the main console is it all wired or do you use some type of high channel madi or dante protocol?
Thank you for the video, Warren. I recently came across your videos and I just finished watching all of them lol. I also have somewhat of a loaded question: how big of a difference is there between tracking/mixing with an analog mixing desk (say an SSL or Neve) and using preamps/outboard equipment alone? Of course it depends on the signal line and the transformers used, but is the distinction between the two night and day? Any chance you could compare the two via percentages? Thanks again!
Hi Nicholas, I often just track with external pres and I don't use the console to track with! I get great results!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Warren great as always! Just a suggestion: I would love to see interviews and studio tours with Trent Reznor, Moby, Alan Moulder...just a few!! :D Have a nice day!
Another GREAT interview Warren! Hey I would LOVE to know what you think is the big difference between the Distressor and the Fatso? I've never used either and would love to know what you think is the application for either?
Completely different devices with completely different intended purposes. The distressor is meant to be a swiss-army knife compressor, and as a little side bonus there's a saturation circuit. The fatso is meant to be a saturation device, and as a side bonus, there's a little compression circuit.
what I got from this was .. Commit .. & lots of nice chatter I'm picking up by osmosis kinda thing but mainly .. I guess get it right the first time ? ..
Hi Pe ter, I answered your question in a different post. But I don't mind answering again! Firstly I would make sure that behind where the singer is (the direction the mic is facing) is properly baffled. Vocal booths in Studios are built behind the singer. IF you still have bleed coming from the back side of the mic then you could consider a reflection filter, but be aware that's not as big an issue. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Great interview Warren! I have a silly question. When you told Matt you were taking his clariphonic he answered "I have to recall today". By recall he means he is mixing a proyect with all that analog gear and he has to put all of those pieces back to the original settings? Cheers!
Hi Juan! Yeah, I use the clariphonic on my mix bus pretty frequently - so if I make any change to the mix I have to have the clariphonic up and running to reprint the new version. I commit most of my analog return as I mix so I don't have to recall a million things, but unfortunately, the mix bus will always have to be recalled. But if I'm not using it Warren can certainly borrow it. Before I moved out I ended up doing a tracking session outside on a mountain and desperately needed and SM7b to make it work - Warren rescued me by having his assistant run it out to me!
hi warren im back for another warren fix. ive taken 3 weeks out of my path for music awsomeness to learn how to change a nappy for a boy. But i did finish my Causic 3 app song and now started the mastering journey to inasnity hahaha
Hey Warren, so did Matt try those SSL comp settings for the revisions he was trying right after the shoot? (@19:00-ish) I'd love to know if he dug it on the 2 buss over what he had dialled in previously. As always, love the channel. Cheers old bean. :)
I honestly don't remember what settings I ended up keeping. I know I did start experimenting with the auto setting more. It has a more "open" sound than the fixed release settings do. In general I've found it to be less conducive to how I tend to use compression, but beautiful if I want to keep the compression sounding transparent.

That piano sounded AMAZING even through a mono phone speaker !! Wow!!! The basses too.
I love Matt's tutorials. He always goes deeply into concepts that might elude us otherwise, has a really fine ear, and the results are pretty dope. Great stuff. Thanks Matt and Warren!
Thank you!

I always like the video before watching
Aw shucks thanks Fabio! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I've been watching Warren's video's for about 200 years, always good stuff.
Thanks Hermin!! That makes sense, I'm 975 now! Haha
Those licks you played on the Rhodes made me want to hear more of that groove, Warren, that sounded sweet. // Cool to see Matt. Cheers!
Aw shucks thanks vey much Frederick that means a lot!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Agreed 100% Tamir! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Clicked on a whim an was reminded of everything I loved and hated about making music a job. I don't miss it though.

what I got from this was .. Commit .. & lots of nice chatter I'm picking up by osmosis kinda thing but mainly .. I guess get it right the first time ? ..
Hi Warren,
what do you think about a reflection filter?
I see them alot but never in a professional studio.
Hi Pe ter, I answered your question in a different post. But I don't mind answering again! Firstly I would make sure that behind where the singer is (the direction the mic is facing) is properly baffled. Vocal booths in Studios are built behind the singer. Hi Warren,
i'm so thankful for your fast answers.
Have a great weekend.
Hi Pe term, so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Man I’d love to have n interview with you! We’d have so much to talk about! Lol pro tools outboard gear mixing. Keep up the great work! :)
Great interview Warren! I have a silly question. When you told Matt you were taking his clariphonic he answered "I have to recall today". By recall he means he is mixing a proyect with all that analog gear and he has to put all of those pieces back to the original settings? Cheers!

gotta ssl clone coming. Thanks for the tip.
Great stuff Jeb!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
why on earth are you not using a HPF on any of your video sound? ;)
Man I want that LA2A cushion lol
Stewart Brand dude... me too
Best moment at 48'
hi warren im back for another warren fix. ive taken 3 weeks out of my path for music awsomeness to learn how to change a nappy for a boy. But i did finish my Causic 3 app song and now started the mastering journey to inasnity hahaha
Hi Matthew, great stuff! Glad you liked it! I love making these videos!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Great interview waren :) - like a kid in a candy store :D
You guys skip over the Roland R880 Reverb?
Hey Warren, so did Matt try those SSL comp settings for the revisions he was trying right after the shoot? (@19:00-ish) I'd love to know if he dug it on the 2 buss over what he had dialled in previously. As always, love the channel. Cheers old bean. :)
Hi Benjamin, that's a good question! Maybe Matt can answer? Matt? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I honestly don't remember what settings I ended up keeping. I know I did start experimenting with the auto setting more. It has a more "open" sound than the fixed release settings do. In general I've found it to be less conducive to how I tend to use compression, but beautiful if I want to keep the compression sounding transparent.
Cool thanks Matt! Appreciate it :)
Matt!!! :-)
Yes indeed Sam! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
marvellous!
Yes indeed Geordie!! Truly Marvellous!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
lmfao you're like a kid in a candy store. another great vid. PS, manley reference is my favorite mic ever
It's a great mic. I do have to say, the manely "gold" reference is a notch up. It's also a few notches up in price :(
I hate Genelics too. Not a fan of the Meyer HD1's either. For me, JBL. Use to call Tannoy Annoy. ML crossovers are great through through a bolder.
Oh you have one of those bell end hats!
I've yet to see anybody else with the Les Paul Recording Bass! Special moment... Lol
I KNOW!! That was so exciting to see!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Come on Warren!! subtitles in spanish please!!! hahaha
Great video as always.
Why do so many engineers hate saying the word "warm"?
Hi High Flown, great question! It's just such an abused word!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
always see you in the comments
because it's one of those words that's used so much it loses its meaning. it has become a synonym for good but doesn't actually give any kind of quantifiable description.
Matthew Weiss Ahhhh gotcha
It may be abused, but it's also such an accurate description of certain colorings, though. When I hear "warm" I think "warm", not necessarily "good". But I know where y'all are coming from.

LCA2B is probably one of the most awsome and characterful compressors on the planet. Anyone who doesn't like it are plain wrong :)
I don't like anything until I like it.
Wow, words of wisdom.
Knif Audio Vari Mu > Manley VariMu > Tube Tech LCA2B
Funny how the guitar that Matt said needed a tune-up which was the most in-tune out of all of them haha
somehow that guitar is still tuned exactly the same 3 months later.
What does he have in his pockets??? His microphone collection?
Haha maybe Jan! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
LOL! I have five sets of keys - the keys to my sublet, the keys to the apartment I am moving into, the keys to my friend's apartment, my car keys, and my prior house keys.
+Matthew Weiss now that's a lot of keys!!
Is it just me or do you think Matt needs a bit more gear? :D
Blind Lemon Jefferson
YES!!! Thanks very much Jay! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Blind lemon Jefferson is a 1920s Blues Man.
I guess I will be "that guy" and disagree with Matt's position that he can and should add things to mixes as he sees fit. Thanks for that Loren! Good question, maybe they want to sell it? Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Either you now drive a Morgan or own a whippet, just pondering which. :)
24:37 grammies on the windowsill as you do
Matt Weiss the most Paranoid Guest you've had on the show, Doesn't quite get your sense of Humor about Gear Lust.
I want to clean that place so bad I got a problem
Haha it's ok I understand!! Dust is the enemy of electronics! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Rest assured, my assistant and I put it back neat and organized after the filming. Now you know what has to be tackled after the band goes home.
Very nice Matt!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This due is the opposite of Simon Phillips.
I like Matt Weiss but he won't turn any knobs on he's videos I think he like to see his pretty face😲
Warren looks like a kid in a candy factory. jaja
