I remember the days of buying a record and hoping the inside cover had the lyrics on it along with all of the other great information. That was also back when you would actually sit and listen to the music and I would always sit right in the middle of my speakers so that I could get true stereo separation. Loved that experience.
HI Jed, agreed! That's the whole allure of Vinyl, it's that tangible thing we hold, the artwork, the lyric sheet, the full credit list! It was and still is a wonderful part of our listening experience! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
Hi friends, I got to visit Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound and it was a blast! Pete is a fantastic mastering engineer and has worked on some great sounding records! In the video, we discuss his journey, love of music, get a look at his gear, talk about vinyl, and check out the record cutting lathe Pete uses! Pete has also offered up some suggestions for those looking to get into vinyl with some budget-minded high quality equipment. Please go to www.producelikeapro.com and sign up to the email list to get the PDF as well as many other great free things! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
I love this channel. There's nothing better during work (or any time, for that matter) than listening to people talking about music and gear. Love it. Excellent work, Warren! :-)
Great interview and walkthrough Warren. it's nice to see a glimpse into the black box of the mastering world. I know that it's a skill to be mastered like any other, but there has always been such a mystique to professional mastering from us home studio types. Good to see the gear and the process. Thanks!
Such an amazing conversation and to see the lathe is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this. I used to DJ with Vinyl and I miss it very much. I don't miss carry the bag around but the touch, feel and emotion of playing vinyl was just amazing. Really glad it's coming back :)
Great video! Vinyl is a really new world to me and getting to see all the labour and machinery involved is just fantastic! It's almost unimaginable (at least for me) how much work and equipment it used to take just to record and mix a single song back in the day, compared to todays technology. But at the same time it's also really interesting that vinyl is on it's way back, maybe somewhat proving that all digital solutions doesn't satisfy all the needs in playing back music, sometimes you really need to emphasize the experience with something physical as well :)
Hi Adam, it was fascinating for me too! I am so grateful to Pete for showing us the lathe and describing everything that goes into the cutting process! Yes agreed, it's about about owning something tangible! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
around 9 mins in I totally agree, I love my hardware equipment and yes it can sound better than digital plugins, but it’s the feel it gives me. I feel that I master better by quickly reaching for my eq rather than wiggling a mouse around. It’s the feel that it gives me inspires me more 👍
That was so cool! I had no idea what went into creating a vinyl record. And what better way to learn a little about it than from the Yoda of Record Cutting! Cheers Pete and Warren :)
Agreed! I loved learning about the lathe! I didn't have any idea what went into the process! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren

Any suggestions for a high frequency limiter when you can't afford the pro-priced Maselec or Etac which were shown in Pete's suite? Informative and entertaining as always. Thank you. Btw the bass woofers in the PMC monitors are made by Volt in the UK. They have the 'turbine-style' speaker basket on the front side and therefore have no basket on the back.
Amazing! I just sat down to clean a load of records that I got from an Indoor Market at the weekend and thought: "I need to catch up on some of Warrens videos" - the PERFECT accompaniment :) Incase anyone's interested, I got some Wings, 10cc. Donovan, Nilsson Schmilsson, The Shadows, Beach Boys, America, Bob Marley Live, Tubular Bells, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole & a few of the obligatory random Country and Movie Theme compilations! Your tangents are great Warren - I'd love to see what you're like after a few pints!
Hi Jon, thanks for enjoying my tangents!! Haha Sounds like you have a great collection there my friend!! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
THANK YOU! This just means so much to me! I had my 82 turntable packed away, It didn't work or so I thought... After seeing this video, WHO KNEW they only works with phono input. I had also recycled my 1980s Marantz receiver days before I saw warren had the same one in his studio. @!#$!@%%.. I did still have an old Radio shack mixer with phono... hooked it up and BAM! Sweet's Ball Room Blitz came blasting out!!! Soo cool to have my 40 y/o turntable now plugged into my system!!! Thank you!

I just have to say, this was one of the most entertaining videos I've seen so far. I had no idea how records were made. Are you going to check out some other record companies? I keep driving by United Record Pressing in Nashville wanting to see what's going on inside that building! Any cool studio tours coming up? I really enjoy the home studios particularly because there's a chance I can afford the gear they use! Haha.
Hi Robert, aw shucks thanks very much! I had an amazing time talking with Pete and learning about the cutting process! Yes many more videos coming soon my friend!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Wow! Fantastic interview. A great lot of knowledge shared and some very insightful conversation. I feel I've just done a course on the whole process. Thanks
Aw shucks thanks treztracks! Thank you ever so much for your kind words!! So glad to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Do you David Weeks? He adjust tape mach… for Studios he has pictures of he & Clive Davis & all these hot shots producers…he also does Tom Shoulz from Boston the band tape mach. He said there were very few left that could set the tape mach now. He gets flown out all over to set up tape machines. He does work here in Athens amps mostly. This was one of THE best installments yet Thank you Warren for sharing this. Great Job!!!
Aw shucks!! So glad you enjoyed this video! I really enjoyed filming this one, I learned so much!! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
Produce Like A Pro So you don't know that guy I was asking about? He one of the Few that know how to set up and Maintain the old tape mach. Studers…I though you may have heard of him. Have a Great Day!
Would love to see your vinyl collection Warren! I have fairly recently gotten into it last year and have about 300 or so already. Boxes of records sure are heavy when moving apartments!
Hi Robert! Wow that's a great collection! I am in the process of rebuilding my collection now!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
18:00 There is a point there, about a good digital mix being fit for vinyl cutting. Hi freq control maybe is related to less ear fatigue, and the sub bass coming in mono just sounds tighter and clearer most of the time (maybe because both speakers are delivering the info in correlation, resulting in more focused energy... Just guessing).
Hi Matthew, Great question! I imagine he still has it, I believe that Pete had a lot to do with helping design the Shadow Hills compressor! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks Fo much Warren and Pete. I have questions about the High Frecuency limiter. Is it just like a de esser with a really high Ratio and Speed, Or like a Multiband Limiter? Or is there more to it? Take Care
Wow that was a ton of information! Very cool though! Who had any idea printing to vinyl was so complicated? Thanks again Warren as always great vid. BTW next time you find yourself working with Bob Ludwig look me up I would like to buy you a pint as thanks for all the info you have imparted.
What a nice guy Pete is and thanks for another really informative and interesting video. Guess I'll be up in the loft looking for my turntable very soon!
hey warren, another great conversation and glad that it covers the art of lathe cutting. i have spent time in cutting rooms working with mastering engineers and watched the process.. ive also studied the science of lathe cutting and i have to disagree with your comments in regards to the "voodoo" aspects of the art of lathe cutting.. it is voodoo..!! the fact that a gem stone cuts wiggly lines into a disc covered with nail vanish and reproduces music is nothing short of black magic and voodoo.. !! ps. this also applies to vinyl playback. 😈
You talk about the experience of opening vinyl sleeves i have the same experience with tapes and CDs I love opening CDs a looking at liner notes and artwork vinyl is more "artwork" esque
Responding to some comments towards the end - I can't tell you how many times I've put like 20 processors on a track and A/B'd it to find the original is better... And then end up with 2 processors with superior results
Ive used tape in school, was an mtr 90, but you use one tape machine, you can use them all, I got to try my hand at slice editing too, that is a REAL art! It was a part of the curriculum though. the mtr90 was crazy fast wind time too, you could lose a finger on that thing haha
Sucky thing to hear about the Apollo fire in February. Hopefully it won't take too long to get back to production. But vinyl production in the world will be effected for sure in the mean time.
First we hear that vinyl albums are superior due to the tangible experience of the packaging and art, then that it’s all about the song the song the song.
Interesting! Definitely don't believe that Vinyl is superior in any way. The conversation regarding Vinyl from a Mastering Engineer's perspective is that the mix was extremely compromised, the low end removed, the high end reduced etc and the love affair that some people have with Vinyl has a lot to do with the 'experience' we had with Vinyl. From buying albums, the art work, rolling things on them haha and generally the romanticism of them! As to your second point, yes, it IS about the song, the song and the song! Haha
@@Producelikeapro I gladly gave up buying/listening to vinyl in the early 90s after enduring their many downsides in the 80s. Yes I loved albums (artwork etc) but I love/d them just as much in the 90s when I went full CD (I still buy CDs and don't see why people have a problem with them). Gave up jumping, scratches, crackle, hiss, reduced bandwidth, storage space for CD that is still a physical artifact with none of the drawbacks (and can store way more on the shelves haha!) I saw an interview with David Bowie on here from maybe 10 years or so back, where he was saying he loved CDs and didn't understand why people wanted to go back to the limits of Vinyl and all the hassle. I did my romanticizing of it in the 80s as said, got it out of my system. I listen to far too much music now to keeping getting up to flip sides and mess around with changing needles. haha. I do still have my old Vinyl packed away (inc an original "a Night at the Opera" as a fellow Queen fan ;) ) but don't really want to play it when I have CD or w/e.
I only buy music I want on vinyl these days, unless it's not available on vinyl. The same for my 16 year old daughter. CDs & MP3 downloads just don't seem to be serious formats and MP3 downloads just feel like a letdown, like it's only a small portion of the entire experience I want from an artist.
Yes indeed! I did enjoy this video a lot! Sorry for not mentioning that before. Quite educational to know the lathe process and just be immersed in the 'mastering' headspace. Thanks so much Warren! :D
Haha Glad I could clear that up for you Sir! Thanks! Yes Pete is a great guy, the room is amazing and it's wonderful to see that beautiful Lathe!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
In terms of sound quality vinyl is useless, everything is being recorded to digital nowadays anyway, once the sound has been quantized the 'vinyl magic' is gone. A record that has been recorded to digital will NOT sound better on vinyl. Especially is that vinyl was mastered from a 44.4/16 cd master. if it was recorded to something like 192/32 or 12Ghz DSD, it will sound better than a 44.1/16 CD, but that has nothing to do with sonic properties of vinyl itself.
hahahaha....funny guy (or woman). It is not about quality. It is about the experience. Vinyl is different. And it can be different everytime. A record can, however recorded completely digitally, sound better on vinyl, but this is subjective. It is about the material. Some stuff just sounds "better" on vinyl (when played back the way one want). In terms of quality, vinyl can be an awesome experience. It all depends on the listener, the pressing and the materials used to play it back.
Hi BoilingJD, thanks for your comment! I don't recall either Pete or myself saying it sounded better? On the contrary we know that a wonderful recorded Album captured beautifully on digital is the best way to go, the reason people love Vinyl is for the experience, holding something tangible, something that has artwork, lyrics and credits of the people that worked on it! It's a wonderful thing to be able to see that information! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
+BoilingJD and there we disagree. quality can be a matter of objective imperical evidence, but it can also be a matter of subjective experiences. In the case of vinyl, the latter can be the case. The vinyl can have a higher quality. This all depends on the needs of the listener. Pressing can add and remove certain noise types (like crackle) which in turn can mean more quality for the listener. However, not everyone will experience this the same. The master you are talking about is only the clean reference, from which the pressing starts. That's all.
I saw a article about the cassette tapes are coming back. haha I use to dub my Vinyl on Cassette & it sounded better than CD from the record stores. Remember those?
I think some of those early CDs were very good masters unfortunately, but they did eventually go back and remaster for CD. Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
Wow! Fantastic interview. A great lot of knowledge shared and some very insightful conversation. I feel I've just done a course on the whole process. Thanks
Hi Terry, thanks very much! Yes Pete was very gracious to share all of this incredible information with us!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

I’m getting one of my songs mastered by Pete this week, so I’ve been doing some homework. I had no idea about this vinyl production. I’m sold
This is great! As an aspiring mastering engineer I'd love to see more mastering tours!
Definitely! More in the offing! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This video demystified the vinyl making process, and why it is so expensive to have them made. Great content as always, Warren.

Your never beat vinyl. Still got all my vinyl. Learnt to mix records on vinyl. Still love em.
Wow you even have the vinyl lathe. What a wild studio. 🤘
Yes! Amazing
That was so cool! I had no idea what went into creating a vinyl record. And what better way to learn a little about it than from the Yoda of Record Cutting! Cheers Pete and Warren :)

Fantastic information, about many things that we don't usually hear about. Super cool. Thanks Pete and Warren!
Great stuff! Yes it was great to get a glimpse into the making of vinyl! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
What a fantastic video!
Thank you SO so much for taking the time to film such a detailed interview and for sharing.
Any suggestions for a high frequency limiter when you can't afford the pro-priced Maselec or Etac which were shown in Pete's suite?
I've been cutting vinyl on my own semi-pro lathe for a couple of years now and I'm only JUST beginning to scratch the surface (no pun intended!).

What a great place! Pete seems like a great guy. Very nice Mastering studio.
Indeed! Pete is a great guy!
The lathe part was very interesting, I didn't know at all how this process works. Great video!
Yes agreed! I loved learning about the lathe!! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
More PMC love needed on YT.
Informative and entertaining as always. Thank you.

Looking at Pete's discography right now, just saw that he worked on Goddess by Banks. Probably one of my favorite sounding records ever.
Hi Jon, thanks for enjoying my tangents!! Haha Sounds like you have a great collection there my friend!! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
amazing.. I have never even considered the mastering process as pertains to the physical limitations of cutting a vinyl master... thanks Warren
Hi Jerry, I know I was really fascinated by everything that goes into it myself!! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
THANK YOU! This just means so much to me! I had my 82 turntable packed away, It didn't work or so I thought... After seeing this video, WHO KNEW they only works with phono input. Hi Warren yet again, a great video. Thanks
Thanks very much John!! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
Warren was curious about the monitor's woofer structure ... and neither of them were aware of the answer.
Inquiring about the PMC woofer's visible structure; that's what the driver mfr(Volt) calls 𝘙𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘭 technology... which facilitates greater cooling of the driver voice coil by shedding it to ambient room air rather than the interior of the monitor cabinet.
That structure is the equivalent to a driver basket behind a typical woofer. In this woofer, there is no basket behind, as the magnet assembly is through-bolted to this front structure.
This greater voice coil cooling benefits minimizing thermal compression ... exposing that structure to the room air outside the box.
It wicks and sheds the voice coil thermal buildup into the room ... as opposed to the interior of the loudspeaker cabinet as other loudspeakers do.
I realize it's been a minute ... that said, I hope this helps those also curious and interested in the answer.

Thanks for the information Steve! I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Great great episode! Thanks! =)
the reason that the speaker grill is designed that way is because the spokes on the outside help to cool the woofer.
Yep that's how I remember it. With vinyl.
On top of the DAT I saw the Louder Than Liftoff drBill Silver Bullet - did he mention what he uses that for?
That's a good question rap freak! I'll have to ask him! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Warren, would you consider interviewing Adam Young from Owl City? He recently split from his label, and he has an awesome home studio.
Wow that would be great!! Do you have any contact info for him? Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
Sadly, no - You may have to do some digging there. I do know several sites that have interviewed him recently though, so there must be a way.

Hi Triple, thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed it!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
great stories about moving around, great towns, but instead you should talk about room acoustics and studio !!!
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it
Sucky thing to hear about the Apollo fire in February. Hopefully it won't take too long to get back to production. But vinyl production in the world will be effected for sure in the mean time.
YAAA DENVER!!!
Perreaux are from New Zealand.
etec "Trebble Limitor"? I wonder if that's intentional?
Haha wow! Will have to check that out! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
In the 90’s I preferred cassette tapes over cd’s!!
Perreaux are a New Zealand amplifier made in around the 1990s. Plenty in Australia if you care to take them off our hands. :-)
Haha thanks for the information Simon! I really appreciate it!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
We love Vinyl
amazing !!!
Incredibly interesting video. With a special appearance from the engineer's secret weapon: the coffee mug.
Gave up jumping, scratches, crackle, hiss, reduced bandwidth, storage space for CD that is still a physical artifact with none of the drawbacks (and can store way more on the shelves haha!)
I saw an interview with David Bowie on here from maybe 10 years or so back, where he was saying he loved CDs and didn't understand why people wanted to go back to the limits of Vinyl and all the hassle. I did my romanticizing of it in the 80s as said, got it out of my system. I listen to far too much music now to keeping getting up to flip sides and mess around with changing needles. haha.
I do still have my old Vinyl packed away (inc an original "a Night at the Opera" as a fellow Queen fan ;) ) but don't really want to play it when I have CD or w/e.
to cool it,s my dreams just to have one record vinyl of my songs to saying I made a record . thanks warren
Hi Dan! Mine too!! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
Hi Nathan, glad you enjoyed the video and enjoy the Vinyl experience!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Yes indeed! I did enjoy this video a lot! Sorry for not mentioning that before. Quite educational to know the lathe process and just be immersed in the 'mastering' headspace. Thanks so much Warren! :D
Hi Nathan, great! Yes so much fun making this video! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

why is it that everyone from Denver is in software eng. or IT haha
This guy is super stand off-ish. Gives me the heebee-geebees.PLAP is always great though.
And that's exactly what I said.... However the vinyl will never sound as good as that hi-rez digital master.
That's all.
I'll never not buy CDs.
I saw a article about the cassette tapes are coming back. haha I use to dub my Vinyl on Cassette & it sounded better than CD from the record stores. Remember those?
Hi David, there will definitely always be a place for most mediums I'm sure! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
Thanks
