Dave Pensado Interview & Fab Factory Studio Tour - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

- Опубликовано: 17 янв 2025
- This week we had the opportunity to tour the Fab Factory Recording www.fabfactorys... Studio and speak with each of the fantastic engineers working there--including the wonderful Dave Pensado!
The Fab Factory is a 4-room, 3-booth studio owned by Shaun Fabos. Right away, clients and visitors (like ourselves!) are struck by the "vibe" of the space. Art covers the walls of the reception and lounge areas, and the studio actually doubles as a gallery exhibiting twice yearly. Shaun ensures that the Fab Factory feels creative at all times, allowing artists to do their best work in a comfortable space.
Each of the 4 rooms are designed for mixing, while 2 operate more as production suites. Jason LaRocca--an engineer, producer, and scoring mixer--first gave us a rundown of his setup. Jason runs Pro Tools with an Avid S3 controller, while a rack-mounted QSC unit provides 64 channels of I/O, onboard EQ and compression, and much of what of a traditional console offers. Because Jason's work involves mixing in 5.1/7.1 surround as well as stereo, the QSC functions similarly to the master section on a board, allowing him to swap speaker configurations as needed. He also has a nice collection of modular synthesizers in an A-100 rack, which he jokingly told us he plays with "when Pro Tools crashes."
Interviews:
Shaun Fabos 0:49
Jason LaRocca 5:25
Michele Canova Iorfida 28:37
Dave Pensado 50:40
Of course, we also visited Dave Pensado in his Fab Factory home. Dave and I have been friends for many years now and had a lovely conversation about current and past projects, the state of rock music today, some of the equipment/techniques he uses, and much more! Dave mixes almost exclusively in-the-box, but he also has a selection of outboard gear that suits his style. A clever piece is the Bettermaker EQ 232 that opens as a plug-in controlled via the physical unit. Interestingly enough, Dave is also a fan of IK Multimedia's compact iLoud monitors which I use all the time!
Prior to Fab Factory, Dave worked out of Larrabee Studios in Los Angeles where he mixed on an SSL. It was around 2010 that he discovered he was doing better mixes in-the-box than on a console, and by Pro Tools 11, he couldn't beat what he was doing with a DAW. Of course, Dave champions whatever method best enhances the individual engineer's creativity, and speaks about the importance of being receptive to new techniques. This might include, for example, using certain plug-ins that allow panning of specific frequencies--a helpful hint he gave us for keeping mixes interesting!
As always, we hope you enjoy this look into Fab Factory Recording Studios and conversation with Dave Pensado.

Produce Like A Pro - THIS IS GOLD , BABY !!! WE SHOULD SEND YOU GIFTS FOR THIS AND THE 5 TRICKS VIDEO YOU GAVE US RECENTLY . THANKS 10 K !
Thanks Warren !!
Aw shucks thanks ever so much for the great comment creative media!
Thanks ever so much Apple!
Hi warren nothing to do with this video but when you gonna accept me into the closed Facebook group? lol no rush..... :)
I'm from Poland and totally proud of Polish pro audio heritage mentioned at 1:17:33, but Melda is actually Czech, not Polish! We're home to PSP Audioware, Looptrotter, Bettermaker and some other great companies, but our sounthern neighbors bring also lots of audio power!
When I first started recording and mixing stuff, without having a clue about anything I was doing, Dave started Pensado's Place. I found it after a few episodes had come out, and I was amazed. I learned so much in such a short time, I'll always have a great deal of gratitude for him. Thanks Dave, thanks Warren, and everyone involved in this video.
Aw shucks thanks ever so much noisesoundtonevibe! You Rock!
This was one of the best interviews with Pensado. Such a nice sincere person. Unusual in this day and age. Both guys are legends.
Lovely Warren...there are so many amazing conversations with lovely people ...thank you so much
Love this Warren! All of the interviews were stellar. You tell Dave ROCK isn't dead, its just taking a powernap! As long as I've got breath and my abilities I won't stop. I swear our paths will cross really soon. In the mean time, I could listen to you and Dave talk shop forever. Keep doin what you're doin my friend!
Tisbonus thanks ever so much! It was great talking music with such an amazing grouping people!
I watched the whole thing. I didn't want to but I couldn't stop watching.
Haha thanks ever so much
Never realized how much of a memelord Dave is. Love it. Watched the whole thing beginning to end in one sitting.
Very cool!!! One of my favorite studio tours/discussions. Thank you so much for posting this.
thank you everyone for this beautiful studio tour and interviews
Thanks ever so much Darlene!!
Old interview, but man is it timeless. I could listen to you and Dave talk until 4:23 A.M. Oh, wait, I am. Love you both. I have learned so much from you. Especially both of your humble hearts. I hope someday, I can meet both of you. Who knows, maybe after this pandemic is over. I hope you both are healthy and your families are doing well.
"Stay Inspired"-Dewey Paul, Jr
It took me 3 days to watch this studio tour. I kept pausing, rewinding (old school term). Didn't want to miss a moment. Thanks To Dave and the rest of the guys at Fab Factory. And Warren you are doing marvelously well.
Aw shucks thanks ever so much James! You Rock my friend!! Yes, special thanks to everyone at Fab Factory!
MARVELLOUS Studio!! Lol! Thanks Warren, Shawn, David, Michele and Jason!!
I agree 100% Harmony! Amazing collection of talent in one place!
I absolutely love this episode. One of my favs!!
Thanks very much
Those studios are like something out of science fiction! And what a thoroughly nice chap Dave Pensado is.
ShiningHourPop I know! Amazing!!
What excites me is that one of the guys is using an Avid control surface to mix...what a great idea, using sliders and buttons instead being chained to a mouse....that is the future right there..bring it on. Also, it felt a bit sad when Warren mournfully admitted he mixes hybrid, a cry for help. The analog dinosaurs and their walls of worthless gear just wishing they could be like the guys with a computer and some speakers. Oh, a control surface too..bam
Blown away.... thanks. Love what you do or go home.
Robert Glenn San Socie exactly, agreed 100%!
You and Dave are always such a pleasure to listen to.
so good to see this studio and these amazing creatives! Michele's synth collection is beautiful
Thanks ever so much Mia! Agreed! Beautiful studio and amazingly talented people in it!!
that sk8board was cool! accually all that art 😎
and those modular synths!!! these are real freaks in the positive way 😆
Thanks ever so much! Yes, so many synths!
Great video.... This recording is gold..., knowledge, gear, studiophile binge....
Excellent work! What's with the thumbs down??? who would do that? If you don't like it, just move on to something else in another channel....
If you're hating on this it must mean you're jealous that Warren has the connection/contacts, knowledge, experience and opportunity to be around all these people and this equipment and YOU DONT, so don't thumbs-down on something like this when Warren works hard to impart so much knowledge on his channel, mixing tips, gear review, recording/miking tips, and even lets you download the MULTI-TRACKS of many of his projects for you to mix/master/EQ/play around/practice yourself with the tracks separately....ALL FOR FREE....
Great work Warren, and great channel.
I forgot to add, it's true the video is a bit lengthy and I guess some people with A.D.D / A.D.H.D. or short attention spans feel like thumbs down, but you can just skim thru and check out the contents/highlights, you dont have to watch the whole thing.
Melvin Polanco aw shucks thanks ever so much! You are very kind my friend! It’s ok, yes some people like to be negative, however we are blessed here to have an amazing community of people that help each other! Thanks for your amazing support!!
Melvin Polanco haha indeed it’s LONG!! Haha but I loved making it!
Thanks ever so much Paul!!
It has nothing to do with ADD and short attention span when you can do the following: skip ahead, pause and watch later or simply not watch. If a video is *uselessly* long, then it is another story but all this stupid mad hate against "long" videos (long compared to what?!) I canno stand at all. I don't have much patience as I used to and I love doing many things at the same time when I can but I love when things are engaging and I know good things take time. It still take 9 months to deliver a baby. What would these people do in that case? Hey doc, sorry but can't you make it... like... 9 days, please? ;)
Many of those who supposedly suffer from short attention span simply have no attention at all, they just click hopelessly no matter what appears for the sake of clicking and changing. It's like the old thing with the remote control.
I wish we had "long" videos years ago when instead you could not upload anything longer than 15 minutes and had to split it into parts. It is ok to thumb down if you don't like it, otherwise the button just wouldn't be there but just use common sense.
using a saturation plug in place of eq (paralleled) - it's so genius
Indeed!! Thanks Frederick for the great comment!
Wow, what a studio!! It would be amazing if you and Dave done a live Q&A together. Awesome video Warren! Can't wait until the next one!!!! I hope you are having a wonderful day as well!!
Aha! What a wonderful idea!!
Thanks Warren! Also I was wondering if you had the chance to mix on the Harrison Mix bus 32c? I just got it a few days ago and used to mix Robert John & the Wrecks (Blame It On The Whiskey) the mixing time was about cut in half. Also what I love about it is the mixing board is just like mixing on an actual one.
Wow! That's amazing to hear Joseph!!
Amazing studio! Incredible bunch of creative guys!!!
Thanks Apple! Agreed 100%!!
We start learning from Dave Pansado from Pensados Place since first episode
Thank you Dave and Warren great great🙌
Thanks Warren. Glad someone talked about Waves Soundgrid. I've started to use the DLS which connects my old 192s to Protools 2018 native and has the DSP to run 100s of waves plugins. The live guys have been doing this for ages!
Hi Paul, agreed! I'm very impressed with SoundGrid!
Really appreciate the time and effort you put into this channel. It's great learning and entertainment. Just started to download the Pro mic academy lessons and it feels like being in the studio with great mentors.
What seems strange to me is that everyone has been pursuing these super expensive, esoteric word clock generators for years... and still getting their standalone interfaces modded with aftermarket clocks. And now, it's perfectly cool to just locally re-clock a whole rack full of devices tossing digital audio streams at each other synchronized by a distributed clock over Ethernet? Hmmm...
I wonder if we're going to see people tearing this stuff apart for being "inferior" in a few years. I mean, after all... if you don't even want 3 meters of coax between your source clock and your I/O interface, how is 50 feet of UTP somehow OK? Or, are we now deciding that any reasonably sensible quartz crystal with a decent low-noise linear PSU driving it will do the job just fine?
Either way, as long as this becomes a relatively well-supported standard between various hardware and software manufacturers, it's nothing but good. I can't see how it would be anything but a blessing to be able to run a single armored fiber optic cable from stage to mix position instead of a 48-channel snake of balanced mic level analog audio.
Hi Nick, very good comment my friend! I have a friend at Hewlett Packard who also does audio. He says they don't understand Audio guys obsession with clocking and that they run hundreds of feet of cable without clocking issues. I agree, the sooner we move into the practical the better!
Absolutely. 192kHz is still practically DC. There's probably more intentional slew to reduce EMI emission than cable-induced slew for any sane word-clock distribution.
There are much bigger things to worry about, IMO. As long as you have your obligatory lava lamp in the studio, it'll be fine. :-)
Warren. This video is absolute gold. Thank you.
Warren, you're out of your mind for this one! Thanks for taking the time do show us all of this. What an opportunity to get in there. Love your enthusiasm and passion for this crazy world of making records! Cheers from Buffalo NY!
Thanks for the Eurorack content Warren!
This whole thing though was amazing. Too much greatness.
satansrobotho agreed! Such a great studio!
Wow, I'm glad I got to get more time and listen through this again. There are a lot of little things in it that I find comforting. I think I can safely get some sleep now, without fear of missing out. 😊
Audrey Sims thanks! You Rock!! Glad you enjoyed the interview and studio tour!
Warren, my head is going to explode !!!! Whole Cow !!!!
Haha Synthtastic!
The WHOLE Cow!!
Haha indeed Mirror rorriM!
Holy crap. Dudes going to blow up in that room. I love this. I'm a techie geek and that was serious eye candy for me. It's kind of daunting though. It makes me look at my pathetic set up and think I should just give up.
I sat in there with Dave and Bob Horn after the Pensado Awards. Great Vibe in there!
Wonderful!!
Thanks a lot for this historical moment.
One of your best videos! so much info about stuff we dont hear every day! just wow!

MyGameplaying aw shucks thanks ever so much!
Hey you guys with the thumbs down, if you don't care for what Warren does, there are so many more channels you can go to.
Hint, Hint.
Haha It's ok Ricky! I'm happy just helping people the best way I can, we have the best community here, amazingly supportive!
I hear that Pensado guy has a decent channel...
Dan Pfeifer haha exactly!
There are always going to be "Debbie Downers" in a crowd. I don't care how far anyone has progressed in this business, there's always more to learn.
There are some parts where it was hard to hear the people talking. I guess that's why.
Ron....Just Fabulous......Wow
Thanks ever so much Ron! You Rock!
Dave Pensado is a GEM
This was just Beautiful...
Thanks ever so much Patrick!
Two blokes just talking gear/music and having a great time doing so . And also the other boys doing great stuff .. Great vid once again :)
When I saw there was a new video up, I was delighted. When I saw that it was two hours long I was even happier! This was a great look inside and outside the rooms (we got to hear about how the facility came about) and then not only details about how the rooms are built and treated (five feet of bass traps! would love to have room for that myself) but also how they are used differently. And as a bonus a nice fire-side(desk-side?) chat with Dave. Wonderful!... thanks for putting this together.
Terry Doyle you’re a classy man my friend!! I really appreciate your great comments, always!! Yes, amazing studio!
wow, what a place and the people seems great and so enthusiastic. Art is appreciated there for sure. Thanks Warren.

Imagine my surprise when i watched Warren's show and my cousin showed up! He's a very talented guy and used to have one of the most fascinating studios I've ever seen, in Milan, before moving to the US. That place was a synth heaven.
