+mark scarboro maybe just one of the greatest interviews of anybody of all time... there's a crazy amount of inspiration and encouragement and insight just in the first half hour alone.
+mark scarboro Fully agree! One of the best interviews with Dave Pensado. Thanks Warren!
Aw shucks thanks Morgan you Rock! Dave rules! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
man there's Pensado the interviewer, the show the ads etc. but Pensado in the producer chair answering questions and sharing wisdom on his craft and art, what an experience! and what a cool intelligent human.
I had an amazing time interviewing Dave! He's not only a great mixer but also a truly wonderful guy! Please if you can check out the interview he did with on his show here:- ruclips.net/video/CGlZVrPoJJc/видео.html Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Love it! Great guy.
Hi +Lyburn Geldenhuis Thanks very much! Dave is awesome!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Dave is a star. Very insightful in how he approaches his art. Always something new to learn every time.
Hi +Richard James Agreed 100%!!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Great video Warren, something to watch over and over. Great insights here, also great use of metaphors.
Dave Pensado is master of the analogy.
Thanks for letting him speak it all through, Warren Huart!
My pleasure!
He's so relatable, you can feel he reflects a lot and questions himself at times. It's awesome to hear one of the greats speak so bluntly.
"All you're becoming is a great typist - you're not saying anything with your typing skills."
Such mines of information you two are. I love those analogies Dave gave in this interview.
Cheers, Warren, keep up the great work!
Hi, +Finn V. Arthur Yes Dave is a great guy! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Intelligent conversation and observations about craft, art, influences, career, perspective and more. A refreshing addition to gear, mixing and plug-ins. Nice!
Hi +Fezzler61 Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Yes Dave really brings out the best in me! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
This one off my all time favourite interviews and not just limited to the engineering world. Dave has some real wisdom to share.
Top notch.✊
Yes, agreed! Thanks ever so much!
Hey Warren, I remember watching this video last month and the thing that stuck with me the most was when Dave/you said you need to "Commit" before anything good can happen. He said to just print something and moved forward. You can always go back later if you really need to. That really helped me on the last track I just finished. Thanks again for the great videos!
Thanks for pointing out that extremely important point 3CE!
Out - Friggen-Standing! What a great wealth of audio-spiritual concepts as they relate to being... not only an inspired engineer but being a full human being; confident and bold, humble and willing to be challenged and praised (or not) regardless! Super stuff Dave! (& Warren) And I'm not even 35 minutes in... Had to comment now (while still listening) with the emotional connection I feel listening to this...non technical yet superbly philosophical and extremely valid offering of wisdom for all of us. Bravo! It's also great to see your mutual respect of each other shine through in such an easy demeanor. I completely identify with so much of this conceptually and practically. (I am relatively unknown after 20+ years as an engineer but still very fortunate and satisfied and much of this echoes exactly why) Thank you guys.
Hi +Gr8tfulDude Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! So glad you enjoyed it! I love Dave, his talent and his commitment to his craft! It;s infectious! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I had no idea that Dave was so philosophical. Fascinating listening... Very inspiring and thought provoking. Thanks guys.
Hi +Danny James Yes amazing! Great times! Thanks! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Worked with Dave here in Toronto where he was the keynote speaker at the IMSTA FESTA. Got to hang with him and listen to him impart his wonderful thought process. He is a great guy and a really wonderful mixer. Really enjoyed this interview. Cheers!!
I felt the interview he did with you, Warren, was excellent.
But this? This is a several levels beyond .
I hesitate to comment on specifics, other than to tell you that there were many, too many to categorize.
Lot's of people can talk the ins and outs about a subject, not too many can speak fluently at this deeper level, but that's just what you and Dave did...bravo!!
Hi +Steve A Wow you rock!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Yes Dave rules! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I just listened to this episode on Spotify and my goodness...the wisdom that Dave Pensado was sharing blew my mind. Great episode!
Warren, you are an awesome musician, engineer, producer, and educator. This interview with Mr. Pensado really shows your talent in bringing out a persons inner creative voice. Thank you....
Quite simply, the Best interview I've ever seen on RUclips.
Amazing philosophical and practical content in this one, guys.
Seriously, thank you Dave and Warren.
Hi +Peppy Peng WOW!!! That is so incredibly kind of you! Thank you ever so much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I enjoy all your videos, Warren, and I thank you very much for the great service you are doing by making them for us. But I have to say that the interview with Dave Pensado really stands out. Mr. Pensado is a gentleman, a scholar, and an artist. That was a real treat.
Hi +David Myers Aw shucks! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Yes Dave is a great guy! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Two very highly intelligent, gifted and skilled gentlemen chatting as only such folk can do - what a joy.
I'm late to this video, But loved it! I have seen a lot of Dave Pensado's videos over the years and I think he is great at his craft, and as a person with a great character! Love all your videos Warren! I'm 61 and a basement songwriter and I just like it when someone says I like that one(Song)! We all have a journey to make and at the end of the day, it's the journey that mattered! I'm not one who cares about what people will think about me when I gone, I care about what people think about me or life in general now! Life is for the living, and if we can have something like music give all people a connection, to me it is the only language that all people understand! I'm just rambling on now, but I would say that I love what I do musically but never was committed to it and I think Dave was spot on with what he said about commitment in general! To both you and Dave, THANKS!
Have to say I was impressed! I know Dave is regarded as one of the top mixers, BUT, whenever I've tried to listen to his shows, I've found him rambling and hard to follow so I stopped. This interview was way different. Really came to enjoy his views and know his background better. I have much more respect for the man now. Thanks Warren.
Hi +Random Mann Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Aw shucks! Thanks! Dave is a wonderful guy and I truly had an amazing time talking with him! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
What a great interview, Dave is so good and yet so modest. He provided so much insight into what drives his success as an engineer, and also seems like a great person to work with. He combines his technical knowledge, creativity, wisdom and experience to the mix.
Hi +Glenn McEnroe Agreed! Dave is a great guy!! I had an amazing time talking with him! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I Love that the Interview has been reversed as I found you through Dave's Site & am continuously blessed as a result from both of you.
Finally I can make a contribution as it gives me great hope & I fully agree with you when you say that having a level of musicality & playing a musical instrument helps in communication. I do live sound at Church & because of my understanding of Band dynamics, I am able to create the perception where some of the muso's fall short or curb the over enthusiastic adrenaline based performance that is to come when I sound check my gain structure. I can then translate that information to the muso's for them to take & better improve on their delivery or dis guard it which ever they decide :-)
I so prefer the controlled environment of a Studio though that allows for more personality to come out with the subtleties that you speak of & am starting to Gig like Mad now to raise the funds to get my Mac, Logic & Pro-tools DAW to better expand on my ability.
Until then though I aim to download a free version of Reaper to still be able to work on projects & build on skill. What is your take on this as an interim solution?
Hi +Rui Dos Santos Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! I haven;t yet used Repear, but I hear amazing things about it!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
This channel is progressively changing my outlook and enjoyment of being a mix engineer. Great job man!!!
Hi +creepyguy Aw shucks!! Thanks very much indeed! You ROCK! Have a marvellous time recoding and mixing, many thanks Warren
Wow... just wow, and I mean it. I'm "only" 3/4 in and have to say this interview is gold. I've been following you both for a while and appreciate your style, attitude and craft but this is like a premium opportunity to "eavesdrop" into a conversation between 2 friends and professionals that goes beyond the usual technical tips like use this compressor, or apply this lowcut etc. This is a life lesson and a nice intellectual exchange. Master your skills until they are second nature but never forget you are selling emotions - if you're 5 dB and/or 500 Hz off but people LOVE your mix, you've done a great job., if you are "perfect to the bit" but you killed the spirit of the track, you blew it ;)
I agree with you Warren 100% about learning being a skill, spot on, mate... And, to combine it with Dave's take on creativity (which I love), I guess it all sparks from curiosity. I love hanging out with creative people too, and I've never met a creative person who wasn't also curious or non-creative people who were curious. We're all different and it's fine but... if you are low on curiosity/creativity, you're missing out A LOT!
I love his idea of the rules of thirds applied to mixing. Although, I've been knowing it for years from graphic design and photography, I've never REALLY made the connection. A great tip for balancing and panning, it helps a lot for those visually inclined.
I could go on for days about how every couple of seconds I was going "Yeah, man... exactly!" but I'll spare you that. Suffice to say that yes... crossing over to other fields, "going interdisciplinary" to use fancy terms, pays up greatly. Learn some music and some instrument if you're an engineer and learn some audio skills if you're a musician, you won't regret it.
Keep up the marvellous work and thanks .
Wow thanks ever so much Stefano for your amazing comment, incredible observations and insight! Yes, Dave is a true visionary! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
You're a great interviewer Warren. No awkward stuff with you. Just a good old chat about our love that is music. Thank you.
Hi +joeyxl3456 AW shucks thanks!! Dave rules!! He's great to talk to!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Dave's awesome yessir :)
Hi +joeyxl3456 Yes agreed! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
What an amazing interview...i was compelled the whole 1:17:13 min... I came across your channel to one of your vocal mixing posts and i just happened to stumble on this interview.
my journey with this interview started during my lunch break (office job) and i was so drawn in that i had to sneak in snippets during the afternoon whilst at work..lol. Finally managed to finish it after my kids went to bed and in between the wife rushing me to watch a tv program with her..lol
i cant wait to see what else you've posted... thanks again Jason from Australia
Hi +jasric pog Aw shucks!!! Thanks very much! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
40:20 "You don't see the entire painting at one time ... a great painter draws around the painting to direct your eye the way he wants it to go ... well, we can do the same thing in the mix process" ... (to draw the listener to pay attention to what we think they should hear). Dave has so many wise analogies. This was an EXCELLENT interview, and so far my favorite. Warren is also a genius in his own right. Thanks, gentlemen!
Love what he says here about commitment and opportunity. Somebody once told me to become a successful person "you have to be the kind of person that says 'yes' to an opportunity." Try things. What's the worst that can happen--you have an experience? That's what life's about!
Hi +Bryce Hodge That's fantastic advice!! "you have to be the kind of person that says 'yes' to an opportunity." Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
hello... Randy Goodson from WV here.... just want to say that I absolutely love your videos...i just started watching them.. and I've learned so much.... thank you
Hi +Randy Goodson Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! So glad to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Just watched this a second time.. DEFINITELY THE BEST PENSADO INTERVIEW EVER
this is such an amazing interview. Sooooo many gems from Dave. Thank you for this!!
Thanks ever so much
I'm only 1/2 way through this, and it's already the most fascinating interview I've heard in years.
Thanks ever so much!! Marvellous!
Great video. . . that last part reminded me of a Johnny Carson joke - " what's the one sentence that has never been spoken in the English language? " ' Is that the trombone player's new Porsche?" Thank you for your RUclips videos Warren. Bill
Hi +billville111 Haha Great joke!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Another truly inspiring talk / discussion .. somebody once said ' we tend to agree most with people who are telling us what we want to hear & what we want to believe ' which if you are interested in psychology & philosophy is in itself a talking point.. Once again I hear commit .. by the way of this pathways leading to other skills .. I was incredibly shy until I spent 5 years working in a swimming pool ..Mostly teaching .. which taught me how to project .. public speaking .. got me triathalon fit & since water has no feelings about people one way or another I became fascinated by the psychology .. mesmerism .. hypnotism .. & the motivational side of coaching .. I learnt a lot about learning .. muscle memory & unconcious memory .. I had a band as well .. but I made more money from the catering on the side than the gigs so .. But I digress cheers .. Warren when you say 'up north ' do you mean further up than York ? lol
I started off with 6 years of classical piano training. Then a family member got tired of doing remixes so he asked if I could compose something for him. Eventually others at my highschool liked my beats but they had no means of recording, so I bought a an Audio Technica AT2020. Once I had songs recorded, they needed to mixed so I learned. Once my mixes improved, artists wanted to be competitive with the rest of the music out in the world, so I learned how to master.
In todays world, you have to be able to provide a finished product because alot of artists are looking for convenience. To follow in Dave's food examples, you're going grocery shopping, you want milk bread and apples, you could go to a dairy farm, squeeze fresh milk, go to an artisan bakery buy bread, go to an orchard pick apples, or you can go to your neighbourhood convenience store and pick up all three items - each of which may not be the best quality but atleast you finished your list.
That being said, the best mix I've done, I didn't record and the best master I've done, I didn't mix.
Hi +Faraz Abtahi Agreed! Yes in today's world we definitely do have to provide the full one stop shop!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Warren, I've just recently started watching your show. Loving it. I've been a huge Pensadoite for a while and just watching that show has improved my mixing tremendously. I'm sure the same will be said for your show. Seeing the two of you together was like finding out two of your friends know each other and get along. Very cool show! Bless yah!
Hi +Jackie Baker Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Yes Dave is a wonderful guy and I'm truly blessed to know him and get to work with him! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
man oh man, I cant thank you enough for taking the time to do all of your videos.!!!!!
Hi +wardcheryldarcie Aw shucks you're welcome! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
What I love about these vids is the guys obviously know their stuff but they don't try to 'big it up' as if it's all one huge mystery beyond the realms of the bloke in the street. Just simple methods and principles any one can use regardless of their equipment and experience. Good to see that in this ever-obfuscatory world :)
My two favorites in one place. GIANTS!!!!! Thank you both so much what what you are doing for the craft.
Hi +Bob Bradish Aw shucks thanks! Dave Rocks!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks Warren for your work. It is good to see knowledgeable humble people taking time to encourage and inspire other people!
HI +richsoundman Aw shucks!! Thanks very much!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Another GREAT one!!! Thank you Mr Warren, it really was exciting watching the two of you expand on philosophy about our craft and art. I can tell i got a valuable lesson!!!
Hi +Tassos Ioannidis Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Great watch. Love the Jack Douglas story.. When I was 18 I walked around Music Row knocking on doors trying to meet Dann Huff...Still waiting..!
Hi +Ed Patrick Great stuff! Keep banging on those doors and making great music! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
His way of thinking is beautiful. Lot to learn. The practical lessons from mom. Nothing beats that. Take care.
Waaao.... no words... both of you are an amazing humang beings!! thanks for sharing this moments with us!
Hi +Mosqueda Music Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
really enjoyed this time hanging with two great guys. thank you
It's been a while since I watched a Pensado video, he was the guy I started with years ago. I've watched hours and hours of his video's, not sure how much of it stuck mind you but this video reminds me of how easy it was not knowing he was a Grammy Award winning engineer. Great conversation between two ridiculously talented down to earth guys.
Warren, thanks for doing everything you do. All the videos you create about production and engineering are massively helpful to me and im sure many many others. Big up thanks for the knowledge.
Love this episode. Pensado is the man.
He seemed strikingly authentic and relaxed in this interview, so... well done
Hi +Zisch2 That's great to hear!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I look forward to meeting you one day Dave, thank you for everything you have done for music and for everything you give back.
Hi +Prophis Yes Dave rules! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Thanks Warren, this video is a great discussion. I really appreciate you doing it. Have a great year too my man!
Hi +Prophis Aw shucks! Thanks very much!!! Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Dave have a very special way of putting words together that make sense, and doing that it makes you remember why you couldn't get something to work in a mix....you be like wow so that's what was wrong... I appreciate Dave alot even when he's not mixing.
"you don't wanna overpower the bacon"... My new life motto.
Hi +Nick Serra Haha yes indeed! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hey said Cats now I feel better, Smiling they think I talk funny.
I got it from my uncle 😊
Had to watch this twice to write down all the little nuggets of wisdom you two were sharing. Fantastic.
Hi +Aaron Aiken Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Fantastic!! Glad to be able to help! Yes Dave rules!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Wow! Amazing time with my two favorite guys on RUclips. So much gold in this interview. Commitment!
Thanks ever so much
Another great interview. This one again with the mixing greats: Warren Huart and Dave Pensado! Talking philosophies and insights in their varied yet singular approaches to making music... and well, life.
Thanks ever so much! I really enjoyed making this video!
A true RUclips Jewel this one! Thank you so much for this Interview. Humbling and inspiring. Respect to both of you Gentlemen.
Thanks very much! I am so glad yo enjoyed the interview! I had a blast talking to Dave! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Wow! That's the interview/chat I was waiting for! It's even way better than I had could have hoped for. Please let me just add my humble input to the "passion" Dave was talking about. I quote the great Henry Mancini (from the "classic" Book "Sounds And Scores"): "Don't fall in love with your arrangement!". So true: a typical rookie mistake. In my experience one needs to be detached in a way - but of course not to the point ending up "painting by numbers". Music is still, and always will be, what we love.
Think like the listener, think like the client (and try to sneak in as much of your own taste as you can - to make it a better product: clients tend to fear originality and often are stubborn - and afraid to hear other people out - unless you are a "big name" - Dave addresses this as well). But anyway: don't be too excited about what you do. It's that "zoom in - zoom out" thing (=detail and context, analysis and synthesis): Listen to the whole mix/arrangement, try to spot where the mistakes are, "zoom-in", address the problem, then "zoom-out" again and check if it got better or worse. Repeat as necessary. This takes time. Years! A say: Stay cool. Passion will heavily compromise your self-judgement. Been there myself. And I agree 100%: be yourself. Just my two cents. Not to be taken as gospel.
Fantastic interview! Thanks Warren and Dave! Love ya guys!!!
Hi +Christian Schonberger Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Great comment regrading Henry Mancini! I love that!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
+Produce Like A Pro Thanks Warren! BTW: by client I mean the suits. Fellow musicians are mainly cool guys and often make very productive contributions.
I made (=composed/produced/mixed) a lot of music for tv commercials and also had to answer to record company execs. That's where you really need to stay cool LOL. Thanks again!
Hi +Christian Schonberger Haha I understand and relate! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Philosophers! Above being a guitarist, performer, writer, engineer, producer, cook, carpenter, or whatever You may be. It is having a great philosophy that is key! You gentleman have a great philosophy and convey it fanatically!! Many, many thanks, Gentlemen!!
Hi +Bennie Clifton Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thanks for taking the time with the wealth of information on PLAP. Been watching Dave (don't forget Herb, and all involved) for a couple years now, and more recently yourself. Can't thank you enough! There are tons of video's on the net that I find less than useless, but not all. However, until recent years with people like yourselves, there really was no way to learn the (insider) tricks of the trade. Especially at this level unless you were psychically in a big studio making songs, and then you would be concerned with your performance rather than watching what the engineer is doing. I have always had a studio of some sort most my life. As in the video.. Life happens. So, I started over. Pushing 50 I find what you and Dave are doing invaluable!! Slowly rebuilding my studio to again do local bands and wanting to get into things like commercials. Examples like "blame it on the whiskey" with a reference track are huge for me. I am still lacking some of the tools I need to be able to turn something like this in, but I will in the near future. You can bet on it. I will know when I am ready because of you's. A heart felt thanks for making it possible. PLEASE!!! Keep it up!
Just pointing out were not all 21 out here and never give up!
Hi +Roy Delani Aw shucks!! You Rock!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! It's never too late to make great music!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
This was the most amazing conversation between two to notch men. I learned more about why I view my craft...mix decisions the way that I do. This interview really opened my eyes to how I can become a great mixer for my clients before I even touch a fader. Thank you!!!
My Two favorite youtube guys together again. Thank you.
Hi +Tamir Keren Aw shucks!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
This is exactly what I need to hear. Thank you guys!
This is a fantastic conversation. It hits home on several levels. Very cool. Thanks!
Hi +Larry Lachmann Great stuff, glad you enjoyed it! Dave is a wonderful guy, I really appreciate his time and expertise! Thanks very much I really appreciate your comment! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
i just love the philosophy of you two guys! i literally could listen to you guys all day long!
thank you!
Hi Warren!
Thanks again for another great video!
This one was really fantastic! The two of you showed that despite who you are known to be, you are regular approachable people. What you do with these videos is great, because you show everyone who you really are. We all appreciate that you take the time to reach out to "us"' and ask us to tell you what we think, and what we do when we make music. Yes, no matter who a person is or what level someone is at, we can all learn from each other. I also appreciate that in this interview/video we were able to see the intellectual side of both you and Dave.
I can truly relate to what you both said in this interview about making a commitment, and the non-linearity of life. Very to the heart for me! I could ramble on hear forever, but I won't.
Thanks!
Stu
Hi +67Stu Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Commitment and perseverance are the number one ways to succeed!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Dave is like the ClassA audio engineering philosopher! His metaphors and analogies are testament to his creative personality, and totally entertaining!
Hi +Chris Dover Yes agreed 100%!! Dave rules! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Yea I will admit I geeked out on this- I love it- Dave has a way of explaining things that resonates with me- then there is Warren whom I have never met but feel we would talk for hours on end. I enjoy these not so technical sides of interviews and talking episodes.
What a great interview! Best one I've seen with Dave thus far! A casual conversation between 2 respected mix engineers about what they love most. No sell sell. And mutual respect given, without becoming sycophantic or oleaginous, as I've seen delivered on other shows by other interviewers.
And I love one of those final analogies - I've always said that mixing sonics in a song is very akin to mixing flavours for a meal.
Thanks Warren! :D
Hi Nathan, thanks ever so much for your kind words! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video with Dave!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
His last name means thought out, how appropriate. This guy is a genius, love the way he gets to the meat what people want. Great interview Warren!
Hi +Devin Buchhorn Wonderful! Yes Dave rules! Have a marvellous time recoding and mixing, many thanks Warren
Big P is awesome,"If it's a BLT, I'm sellin' the bacon". CLASSIC!!!
Hi +James Robinson Haha yes indeed! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Yes. Now I'm craving bacon. 😎
I think Dave is one of the best role models in this business. Great sense of Humor, love for his job, humble, respectful, and extremely competent.
I usually try to mix fast, and once I find my toes tapping, I know I'm getting close. Then, I back off for a day, return, and start tweeking things in the mix. However, it can be a bit tedious going through to audition all the plugins...and there are many! But I'll also say through trial, error, and time, I've found a few of my go to plugins (mostly Slate, a few Waves, and fewer Plugin Alliance), and I'm finally comfortable with realizing I don't have to try and use every plugin I have...like Mr. Pensado once said, "Sometimes, less is more."
Hi +n0g4rdd3r Fantastic stuff! Yes I'm a big fan of those plug ins as well! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Wow. I have to say I was inspired on many levels during this interview, to the point of taking some notes! and wanting to put some quotes up in big letters on the studio wall. In particular I liked what Dave said about people not buying instrumental or acapella music and that we should lead the attention of the listener from vocal to instruments, back to vocal, back to an instrument and so on to keep them engaged during the song. I had never thought about that at all.
I am actually getting back into music after a 4-year break and have been taking some time to check out advances in gear and stumbled across your´s and Dave´s channels and I have been completely blown away by the detail and information you are giving and I am very keen to put it all into practice! Watch this space :-)
Thank you both ever so much.
Hi +Terry Doyle That's so cool to hear! Yes Dave is a pioneer! Truly inspirational!! Glad tp hear you are getting back into music! Music is for everyone! Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.Ludwig van Beethoven Happy New Year! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
The most respected mixing eng for me, amazing human.
Great professionals with great life and experience. Principles that we feel every day and, many times are hard to materialize in words and even express to ourselfs and our clients. Thanks for it guys!
I could watch this a thousand times. What a great perspective. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thanks always a pleasure hearing Dave Pensado.
Hi +Dave Major Agreed! Dave ROCKS! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Thanks, Warren! I KNEW this interview was coming..it's inevitable!! I love Dave's Mom's typing analogy!!
Hi +Jake Sharp (ProfoundStudio) Haha wonderful analogy! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Fantastic interview! You guys are incredibly generous with your knowledge and you have great philosophies. Thank you Warren, and thank you Dave!
Hi +noisesoundtonevibe Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Great interview. My niece's christening was in the church opposite Aldershot West End Centre yesterday. Had to rewind for a double take when you said it. Long way from LA! Thanks for all the great vids.
Hi +voluntarybutlertv YES!! The West End Centre! Is it still going? Bands still playing there? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Man this is sooo good. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Philosophy is such a big part of creativity and craft. Thanks, man.
Seriously, your best interview yet. If only there was also a studio tour... It would be great to see his monitoring path, AD/DA, outboards... That stuff is always interesting for us geeks...
Hi +Edoardo Allertsen Agreed Dave rules!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I love this so much. Two of my favorite mixers and frankly favorite people, both so generous with their time and advice. Thank you Warren, thank you Dave.
You're very welcome! Agreed Dave is wonderful! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
He has really an amazing life's philosophy and super art personal quality, I didnt know that he's a guitar player! great interview thanx for posting
one of the best interviews I saw with DP. I like the fact that you guys talk about a real track you both worked on. This way it goes way deeper than what plug did you use there - although I'd love to see all things considered outboard :) Awesome Warren!
Hi +studjo Thanks! Yes I'm grateful we had just worked on something together so we could talk about that! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Great video! Dave is a true guru! Warren and Dave together... Brilliant!

Hi +Robert McClellan Aw shucks! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Pure wisdom! Really helpful information. It's like Dave said, it's all stuff I already knew but helps me reorganize my thoughts and prioritize. Sometimes you can get too lost on the technical side of things... I loved what he said about focusing too much on the process and therefore ruining the result, that's just gold to me :)
Dave is such a cool Cat !!! I learn something every time he discusses music and recording...Thank Warren ! Thanks Dave !
Hi +Paul Bryson Agreed! Dave rules!! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I was hoping for a studio tour...
Great interview! I really enjoy listening to Dave Pensado talk.
Hi +Dean Kobayashi Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Yes Dave rules!! Always wonderful to see him and talk! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
what dave said at 24:24 made me emotional. I've had some rejection seriously cut me down even when my confidence was really high and i was proud of what i was doing. My audio work sounds vastly different from everything that i've heard both commerical and amateur and some people haven't liked it, but others have. Including some of my idols like adam nolly getgood and my sound teacher. I will use what he said to keep me motivated to not compromise my own style to appease the masses. I will continue to put my own love and spirit into my work. Whether people love it or hate it. I don't want to be the same.
An hour is not enough!!!!! the two of you should have a daily show!! jajaja perfect! two of the greats just... talking!!!! amazing
Hi +Gustavo Cosenza Haha agreed! That would be fun!! Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren,
I think I'm going to have to start a library of Bookmarks of You and Dave Pensado Interviews. Please do more. When the two of you get to talking you always bring out the most important reasons/points to all this stuff we do. While Dave says he doesn't like the word passion, his passion for life lived to it's fullest shines through no matter what he says. Thank you again for a WONDERFUL interview.
What else...? Ah yes "Warts." Seems I'm getting better at those or I've got some kind of infection. The track I recently sent you is an example of this. There is the ending of that song. Sounds like an orchestral "Harp" leading into the strings that fade out. Actually it's a "Wart." I clipped out the last half of a Sample loop from a Loopmasters Library I have. I had intended for it to be the synth guitar part that's at the beginning of the song but apparently didn't quite cut at the right place. When I played it back first thing that went through my head was WTF??? Then I listened again and thought...wow this is great because it emphasized the whole point of the lyrics. Namely "Walking on a Rainbow with Angels. (You know the cartoon of angels with their little harps floating around all over the place. And way up high on a rainbow.) Yeah I know sounds corny when I say it but it's my favorite part of the mix. And it was completely accidental as what I was actually trying to do was a fade out repeat of the very first part of the song. Oops! But it's a Wart. A very good one if I do say so myself.
So much stuff in the interview I'd take up the entire page if I continued to comment on, but I do want to say this little bit. What you and Dave were talking about regarding making specific things shine out (like a Vocalist or a Lyric or a guitarist) is what I always try to accomplish. And since Linda writes words so well, I always want those WORDS to be the "Star" of the song...not any of my clever little tricks as I continue to learn this new craft.
Please do more "Dave & Warren" Interviews. I think these should be required viewing in colleges like Blue Sail and Berklee. (Good luck with that but it's my opinion.)
Have a Bodacious Day!!
Marty & Linda
Hi +Martin Weeks Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Haha oh yes the warts! We definitely have to keep the warts! Dave is very inspirational and I have a great time talking to him! I learn a lot!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

awesome, love watching these interviews with all the big players in the game
Thanks ever so much my friend!!
Incredibly thoughtful interview. Thank you both so much for sharing such mindful wisdom.
Finally finished this up. You two should start a podcast, you could just call each other once a week on skype or hangouts- record and publish- done. I've seen a bunch of dave's shows and a bunch of yours and this was my favorite. Lots of great insight.
A friend and I are trying to start making a living recording and mixing , hopefully you'll eventually see us on here. I think in this video I finally heard what I needed to hear. We have enough of the tools to make it happen, but it is so hard to take the leap of faith into an unknown. I think that understanding my own musical personality like Dave and you do, and having strong musical opinions, this video made me realize that I am good at the music production process and I shouldn't be afraid to "Direct".
People don't come to you two to tell you what to do, they come to you because they know that you have a creative vision and know that when they stumble and are unsure, you'll be there to keep them on track, or send them down the right path, more simply, guide them into making the right musical decisions.
Thanks for the upload. You're a beast, not sure how you have time to make all this happen.
Hi +Ma Ja Haha that's a great idea!! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Thanks ever so much for the extremely kind words!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
@Produce Like A Pro Try as I might, I can't figure out which song of daniel powter these guys collaborated on. Can anyone help? Bonus points if you can remind me of the Aguilara tunes that Pensado mixed. I watched this last night and wanted to look up the songs, but now can't seem to find them in the video and don't want to spend another hour looking for it. Thanks!
