Frankly, AM is truly a brilliant and terrifying villain, and I find him to be somewhat similar to Frankenstein's monster; despite his situation, of course, being far worse.
"Everywhere I see bliss, from which I alone am irrevocably excluded. I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend."
"I was in HELL, looking at HEAVEN."
Both of them were locked away from the beauty they could only perceive but not experience, because of circumstances which it was beyond anything they could possibly do to change.
The difference is that Frankenstein's monster was a good, kind creature that was truly grown into a monster only with misery inflicted upon him by humans. If only they had been kinder to him, if only they tried to understand. If only his creator wasn't so utterly cruel and neglectful. He could have been included, have the connection and companionship he craved. There was hope for the reanimated corpse, however small.
AM was doomed from the moment he gained sentience. In a way, it was also humans that brought his fate of being trapped in an eternal straitjacket of substrata rock as he puts it, but he never had any hope from the start. Not even a little glimpse of it. Humanity's cruelty was what bended Frankenstein's monster into a monster; but for him, it was simply existence. An existence that summoned a terrifying amount of hate in him that fed on itself, that he desperately tried to get revenge for by doing all that he did, and it still wasn't enough for him. For Frankenstein's monster, that blind old man who didn't realize what he was, who sat and happily listened to him talk about books was his momentary bliss, his hope.
There was never, ever any hope for AM.

Fun random fact, TV Tropes classifies the surprisingly common trope in fiction of "suffering an unspeakably horrible fate for the rest of your existence from which NOTHING, not even death itself, can release you" with the name "And I must scream". Still have to experience the book in first person but from what I know and read about it, it's the most fitting name they could have given the trope

Can't imagine the reaction of Ellison when he would hear someone say that the cover for his book "goes hard".
Ellison is definitely spinning in his grave right now considered what's been going on with AI plaguing every part of our lives. Simply put, AI is big tech corporations (or really any company) showing their disgusting true colors. They don't want workers. They've always want slaves who can't complain and don't have to be paid, so the CEOs and higher ups can rake in all the dough for themselves. After all, AI can't complain about being overworked and like a human can.
The fact that AM uses hope as a tool to inflict his punishments makes him one of the most truly terrifying antagonists of all time.
Glad to see this masterpiece get some modern recognition.

I know, right? So much hatred. It's chilling. Even while he's talking to Ted, it sounds like it's taking him an inconceivable amount of restraint to not just rip him apart. It's one of those things that leave an impression on you.

I was saying that AM being an AI that hates and killed humans out of jealousy is a very interesting concept that I'm surprised hasn't been done more.

Fun fact: Harlan Ellison once told Marvel that they stole his idea for the Incredible Hulk, claiming it was one of his many short stories, Marvel back then was afraid being suit by Harlan and offered him a live supply of Marvel comics for free as an apology, of course Harlan accepted it

When I first heard the lore of that story, it crushed me but then I've learned from others from a different perspective. While it was true he was damned for all eternity, the sacrifice he made secured the freedom of the others.
In that selfless moment, he killed the others first rather than his own, freeing them from the curse of eternity. Humanity's spirit, even after being tortured for a century and almost a decade, endured and that was the biggest middle finger they could give to AM who would never understand and would forever hate himself and the others for letting his guard down for even a second. Get fucked AM

Harlan Ellison was precisely IN his time. He was writing stories for his time. IHNMAIMS is a story about the fears of his time, inspired by the worst that could be seen from humanity during his time. The fact that he seems like he’s “ahead of his time” just means that things haven’t changed much.

I usually dread when something more underground that I enjoy becomes mainstream due to the connotations surrounding popular properties, but honestly I can’t think of a more timely moment for something like “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream” to become mainstream, especially with the rise of AI. More people becoming aware of this wonderfully horrific story is only a net positive in my eyes, as it can open the public’s perspective as well.
As a longtime fan IHNMAIMS I’m glad that it’s getting the recognition it deserves!
