Sancho O'Dell Exactly, in the original broadcast versions various Knight Rider episodes, there are sound effects that seem to have been removed on the DVD releases. The sound effects of that boat is one of them.

Interesting observation. I think what has changed for sure is the music used. In the original series they had contemporary 80's chart music. Tina Turner's 'We don't Need Another Heroe' used when Kitt had to be reconstructed when he was nearly destroyed by acid. Yes's 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' when Kitt was driving over a bridge. All iconic music from the era These have been replaced with cover versions. I don't know if cover versions were sometimes used in Knigh Rider at the time of original broadcast but I suspect , unfortunately, for copyright reasons they put these in place of the original songs for the DVD releases which spoils it a little (particulalry if you saw the show first time round back in the day) As for the general soundtrack (vehicles noises etc) This has been certainly done to some movies from years back in the 1970s like Duel, Jaws. etc released more recently on DVD. They have redubbed the sound effects. presumeably to improve sound quality and 'stereolise' them as they were originaly in mono.
