It's funny, I see the shorter length as an upside! I always have trouble finishing long, drawn out JRPG's so 20 hours feels great to me.

I don't like when games do the "its an RPG so let's stretch it out as long as we can" I prefer a game with good pacing and story. Star Ocean V was 25 hours long but so shit and devoid of story it need to be at least 29 hours longer to develop an actual plot.

I just finished it and must say that I would appreciate it if someone gave the same developers about 10x the money they had to create this so they can start on a re-make right away. This game was despite all the flaws more immersive and atmospheric than all the big budget JRPGs I've played the past decade.

So people are fine with spending $12 to see a 2 hour movie in theatres once, but are against paying $40 for an 18 hour game that can be replayed?

keiichimorisato98 That's what I figured is true for a lot of people.
Sure, Chrono Trigger has about the same playtime and can be gotten digitally for a lot less... but c'mon, $40 doesn't HAVE to give you 50+ Hours of gameplay, any game with over 30 hours is mostly padding anyways.

    • @keiichimorisato98
      @keiichimorisato98 8 лет назад +11

Seacliff so true, i'd rather a tight 20 hours game than a 40 hours game with padding.

Everywhere I go: "$40 is too much for a 20 hour game"
    >Chrono Trigger is 20 hours or less and cost what would equal to about $100 today when adjusted for inflation
Is it not the quality of the content and the amount of joy you get from the experience that's important? This is something that's wrong with much of the gaming community today. Game length tells you literally nothing about the quality of the game. Chrono Trigger is about 20 hours. Metal Gear Solid is about 10 hours. Shadow of the Colossus is about 5 hours. Does that mean anyone who payed for these games on release got ripped off? Are any of these games lower quality because of their length? It seems like the fun is irrelevant and all that matters is how much gameplay per dollar you're getting.
People are entitled as fuck these days.

I agree completely. Especially when GTA fans complained about GTA 5 being the shortest in the series. First of all, I always get like....fifteen to twenty hours out of that game every time I play it. Second of all, don't you dare try to tell me that length alone is what makes GTA 4 a better game to you people. Yes, 4 may have been longer but it was also BORING. I'd rather have a short game that's fun than a long game that's insufferable to get through.

    • @luisoncpp

Many of us played Chrono Trigger as a kids or young teenagers and it took much more time to us to figure out what to do than an adult if he plays the game right now. That's why most people remember Chrono Trigger as a long game.
Also, it took me at least 10 hours to finish Shadow of Collossus for the first time.
About the length of I am Setsuna, it wouldn't matter to me if it's because the story progresses faster(like in Chrono Trigger), but if it's because there are less story than in traditional JRPGs it would be disappointing.

I watched about 1 minute of an Onison video, disliked and contemplated shooting myself. I didn't have to watch the whole thing to understand it was bad for me.
In the same way, some people watched this and instantly liked something about the video so they liked and some instantly hated it and disliked.

My main gripe with the game is that while emulating Chrono Trigger to a T, it somehow missed a primary element...the atmosphere.
See, Chrono Trigger felt like a jolly, ass-kicking romp through space and time, because it was. You and your friends of various species fought through thick and thin, going for the gusto in an attempt to liberate the planet from its ultimate destruction. It felt really fast-paced, energetic, and...fun.
Setsuna, on the other hand, seems to evoke a kind of melancholy atmosphere more evocative of recent JRPGs with its piano score and "Serene" environments, and I'm...not sure I like that. It's being done to death at this point, and just seems kinda generic. I don't want to be told that what I'm experiencing is beautiful. I want to feel the beauty through the experience.
    That's just my two cents.

About what was said about the "junior high play," not only does the soundtrack remind me of grade school, but I went to a Waldorf school for kindergarten through first grade (if you look it up it'll sound more cultish than it is) and the visual style really reminds me of the toys we had there. So I didn't play video games back in the JRPG golden age, but this does throw me back to that same time.

This is what pisses me off about Squeenix, people have been asking for some good old fashioned JRPGS like the ones we grew up with and Square has been hesitant to do it. Now they make this which is a clear throwback to the SNES glory days but then charge $40 for a short 20 hour game, meaning for a lot of people its not going to be worth the cost which Squeenix will turn around and use it as reasoning why they dont bother bringing over/making old school JRPGs anymore. Would it have really hurt to throw in a ton of side quests or something to add to replayability to pad out that cost/complete ratio?

    • @Chris-Moore501

It's good enough for me that they listened and gave a JRPG that we wanted. you cry about $40 for a "short" 20 hour game, and most Triple-A games have 12 hours of gameplay or less for $60.
and this game is made for those who grow up with this kind of game, those old enough to afford it, if not, wait for a sale.

    • @timslack7568
      @timslack7568 8 лет назад +1

      Tharlon Jones
Overwatch is an online shooter its not going to have a ton of content but its going to have a lot more replayability than a RPG and people are going to put a whole lot more than 20 hours into the game. $1/h shouldnt be mandatory but it is a good guideline and if Im paying $40 for something it had better give me a good value and a 20 hour RPG that while im sure the story is good the 1st time through Im betting theres not gonna be a lot of 2nd playthroughs, also consider the fact that this is an old school JRPG so how much of that 20 hours is grinding therefor getting even less value for your buck.
Im probably going to get it if Square drops the price but they rarely put stuff on any kind of real sale and its a shame that they priced it the way they did because JRPGs are my favorite genre and theres not a ton of old school ones out there right now

I preordered this game and played it when it came out. I think I've put in ~70 hours into the game, and I've tried so hard to get interested in the game. To be honest, it was a disappointing experience compared to other JRPG's. The game is 100% focused on the main story, and I'd expected side quests with a non-linear story. In fact, whichever dialogue you choose, you're forced to go through the same passage anyways; the story does not change when you select a different dialogue. I also expected new monsters toward the end of the game, but as I get further in the game, there were only higher level versions of the same mobs. Fighting the same type of monsters gets old and tedious, especially those snowball riding squirrel-fucks. The characters weren't interesting, really. It seemed like Tokyo RPG Factory were portraying themselves as the characters, and I know for a fact that they're the most boring developers; a recent video of their AMA was so boring, I had muted the video and turned on subtitles instead.
After several hours, the piano music gets old because, it's piano music and I expected drums or bass at least, like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy's soundtrack, but then again it's uniquely different from JRPGs I guess.
Worst of all, there is a HUGE level/difficulty gap between the second-to-last boss and the rest of the game, and the only way to beat the last boss is to grind your way to level 50-60, because you won't be able to save near the end of the game. It felt as if it was rushed towards the end of the game, and I expected a much better ending. I had a lot of good hopes for this game, but it turned out to be second place of the most disappointing games I've ever played; No Man's Sky being the first.

I'm enjoying playing this game. One thing about Square-Enix, you can always count on a good story and good gameplay. It's not as good as Chrono Trigger but is still very good as an old school turn-based rpg with very good graphics. It's worth the price you pay for it.

so far i am loving i am setsuna. i never played a final fantasy game besides 13 (which tainted FF for me) and i never played chrono trigger, so comparing this game to chrono trigger and FF doesn't really mean anything to me. what made me buy it was how beautiful it was presented to me and the combat system intrigued me.

I was hoping for a Vita copy, since the PS4 has had almost no games that weren't also released on the PS3 or PC, or a GOG release where I regularly pre-order my PC titles.
I suppose I'll get it on Steam, eventually, once it's $8 or less. 80% off is my guideline for "buying" games from a company that can empty your library and leave you with no recourse against them, so it's pretty much GameFly for the PC in my eyes.

It's not bad and it is basically a love letter to Chrono Trigger, but there are some things taken from Suikoden as well. Particularly, the choices of dialog the main character could say. Also, people forget that you can easily beat Chrono Trigger in 15 hours with collecting the Rainbow Shell and doing every side quest.

Looks intriguing and it does faintly spark some nostalgia through, as already mentioned, Crono Trigger, plus Breath of Fire, Lufia, and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, to name a few. However, I feel I've played through a fair share of JRPGs that It'd be something I'd be more interested watching someone else play, rather than shell out a couple $20s.

I bought it for 40 euro's. I'm really biased, because I simply love jrpg so this game kinda automatically appealed to me. I think it's a very beautiful game, although it's not that original (but that wasn't their intent I guess). The story was intriguing, the characters were interesting, the battlesystem was a direct and well done rip-off of chrono trigger and I personally loved the setting and music. I would have given this game a very high rating if it wasn't for the extremely underwhelming final boss and ending. All in all, I am Setsuna feels like a game with great potential, but should have gotten more story time and a less-rushed ending.
