I think when people say it looks ugly, what they mean is that it looks last-gen. Being spoiled with the graphical prowess of games like Uncharted 4 and The Witcher 3 makes a lot of gamers quite jaded.

starphaser it's stunning but it's boring and the camera is terrible. that's why lol people talk shit about the game. No one wants a stunning game that has boring gameplay and it can be an fps or any type of game, it's gameplay over graphics.

As an artist that loves different games like this, i bought the collectors edition. Not everything has to be killing and shooting, kids. If you don't want to play it then fine don't, but don't say it's shit because you have no idea what you're talking about. It's a different game for specific gamers. It's a breath of fresh air to play something like this.

      @emmettturner9452 7 лет назад +36

Megaphro Yeah, but everything else continues to be amazing too and it's even less likely that someone would use them as examples of aging poorly. Compare riding Epona in the 2016 remaster of The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess HD for Wii U to riding Agro in the original Shadow of the Colossus for PlayStation 2. Tell me again which one "aged poorly" after watching Epona spin around while locked to a forward-walking animation when the player makes a slow turn (just like it used to in 2006). Agro has to take the correct steps and shift weight and momentum to change direction and it feels incredibly natural. These "natural" details make it feel that much more like riding a horse should feel while still being incredibly playable. Shadow of the Colossus is a game design masterpiece.

So, when I first started playing this game, years ago, I didn't like it. Because I found the game mechanics really frustrating. But, the game was always in the back of mind. Anyway, I decided to give it another go and played it last month and pushed through the parts I didn't like. Ended up falling in love with this game and realised how amazing it actually is.
I think a lot of people do the same as me, but they just don't go back. It's a shame as it deserved a lot more credit.

Who Slew it's not that good, all the cool and breathtaking moments in the game are nullified after a while as you get sorta used to them and they do not invoke such an emotional experience and then the game turns into a boring puzzle game with wonky controls. Compared to all AAA games that have released in the last decade, this game can barely scratch the top 50. (My opinion)

Don't really care about frame rate or camera issues, I absolutely love Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. I think they are more than games, they're experiences, unique pieces of art that deserve to be contemplated with care; and I hope to feel the same way about The Last Guardian.

I can let it slide about not caring about frame rates, but how can you not care about controls and camera if they’re considered one of the most important elements in a videogame? Without them, you would just have a beautiful looking game that plays like trash. That was my exact experience after beating the game.

People look like they forgot how to enjoy a game. Sure this game isn't going to be game of the year and compete against the huge games such as The Witcher 3, GTA. But, it has its own atmosphere, going through it with this amazing creature. It's just a simple journey game. Purpose of this game isn't to make you thrill out of action scenes and huge-boss-battles. If you think it's overpriced wait till it drops to $30. Loving it right now , interacting with trico is just too cute and lovely.

anybody who complains about the controls or camera you're missing the entire point of this game.. it's about companionship and loyalty and friendship and tbh it's fucking beautiful. you go through so many hardships with this creature from the very beginning of the game you awaken next to him as he has arrows sticking out of his back, you help him, he helps you. this creature goes through so much shit for you, to protect you and you can REALLY feel the emotion especially the ending. no game will bring emotion out of you like this one.

Im playing it right now an I dont hve a single problem with the controlls to me they seem very fluid. Its just the character that bounces around but stick to what you tell it to do as long as you use the slow walk at appropriate times. Also a worse controlling game in my opinion (I may have just not mastered it) is "The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt" Geralt moves way more janky and both the slow and fast movement options are too far in each extreme to be able to pick up items which you do a lots while in The Last Guardian if your next to a barrel just press the button and the kid walks too the barrels and picks it for you if close enough.

    • @Buddhapungen
      @Buddhapungen 2 года назад +1

Four years overdue but here we go.
In a recent Razbuten video he goes into the frustration of videogames. He goes into how that frustration makes the player bond with the game in a deeper way since they've experienced the highs and lows of it.
The last guardian isn't a game that's supposed to make you love every single moment of the game while playing it. Rather, its purpose is to give you a slowly simmering appreciation of the game after you´ve played through it. Meaning that you´ll get a deeper appreciation of the game months after your playthrough. This leads into my point with Trico.
His A.I is supposed to be frustrating at times, so that way you can connect more with the times that he isn't wonky. I'm not saying that Trico's A.I is Perfect in any sense. Rather what I'm saying is that it did what it was intended to do. It might of overdone the A.I at times but it still gave most players that simmering feeling of appreciation over the game.
Also, I think it was an close to impossible task to make a follow up of shadow of the colossus and still have a sense of new wonders within the franchise itself
that will be all your honor.
Imagine writing something like this four years after the original comment smh

Just finished it today. This game is such an amazing experience...
The story and soundtracks are lovely. By the end of the game, the bond between you(player) and Trico is real. No game can ever make me feel emotionally attached to an animal, but this game has done it with ease.
It has many flaws such as frame rate and other performance issues, but the pros are so outstanding that it outweigh all the cons. For me, It worth the 10 years waiting.

The graphics are an art style, it's not going for realistic. The game play is not hack and slash is trying to get you to become connected with it's characters by admiring their magnificence. I am so excited for this game, I loved that last two they did and I loved this one, only half way through and I can't seem to pull away. If you don't like the style that's fine but hating on a game because it's not your thing is childish as fuck. Would spend 60 again before ever spending a cent on Dead Rising 4.

In my opinion I think the game scenery and setting is very cool along with the general story. My only issues are the camera and the lack of guidance involved. Many times I found myself just sitting there not knowing what to do and getting frustrated as I couldn’t figure out even what my task within the game was supposed to be. Maybe that’s just me disliking puzzle games but I don’t know, I feel like a big more guided gameplay could be helpful, or maybe just even a general goal given to you while playing the game as they kinda just put you in this place and say, go figure it out.

And I'm honestly very pleased with what i've seen. Like you said, the interaction between Trico and the boy mixed with the beautiful landscape make the game worth it for me.

I love this game, I really really do.... but here's my thing...
There are certain parts that are overly complicated for absolutely no reason.
When you die, you have to press buttons to respawn.
I am currently stuck in a tree & have been trying to figure out how to get out because apparently swinging &/or wiggling isn't enough.
This game is stunning, it truly is... but it could have been a tiny bit more simpler in some parts.

I just finished The Last Guardian after finishing Uncharted 4 for the first time a week earlier. I would much rather play a flawed yet impressive and unique game rather than some generic, yet more stable game. Uncharted 4 bored me quite often while I was enthralled with the Last Guardian the whole way through. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I would consider this game to be one of the best in years as it remembers how to properly utilize the medium of games as it would be a worse product in any other medium unlike Uncharted 4 which would have been much more entertaining as a film. No one remembers a generic, yet perfect game. I will never forget overcoming the flaws to witness the amazing spectacles of The Last Guardian.
Please let me know if you agree with me on this.

I've just finished the last Guardian and loved it!
The down side, is the feeling that a bit more play testing could have removed many of the frustrations that break up an otherwise engaging experience. There's some parts that are not intuitive at all. Ledges you can't climb on, routes that are hard to see - puzzles that use rare or completely new mechanics.
Combined with a difficult ( albeit adorable ) Trico meant I was stuck in areas and puzzles which when completed left me feeling annoyed rather than elevated.
    Some examples were...
Spending 15min trying to get Trico near a clearly defined and well lit ledge, to find I couldn't climb it, and the correct path was a small pathway that looked like background.
A tunnel underwater that was impossible to find.
A wave mechanic only used once in the game.
A see-saw mechanic only used once in the game.
Getting turned around by similar looking gates, so thinking the correct path was back tracking.
Leaping into space a few times due to the camera/controls.
Pretty much anything Using Trico's tail.
Finding routes only by just sitting on Trico and letting him wonder around for 5 minutes.
This Game is glorious, and that's why its few flaws are oh so painful.

I just played this and only finished it 10 minutes ago and I can say that it's an experience that I wont ever forget, the way the game makes you connect and feel for Trico is something you dont get from regular games, yes the controls and camera can be a pain at times but I found myself not worrying about it because I just wanted to see this journey through to its end, and the way the credits showed you moments from the journey really hit home the bond you form with Trico during the game, I adored this game and am so glad I decided to dust it off and finally finish it ❤

i really love how the boy and this trico animated, how the walking does, wiggle, hurry when the statue-creature in sight. I am pretty sure this character development is way much great than expectation (compare to its predecessor). but still, what jake mention about con is true (camera, not perfect, etc). maybe if the dev want to honing up with more delay, i guess that will better, but more delay is some LOL to many people i think.

I'm among the people that hasn't played Shadow of the Colossus. I'm very unfamiliar with this kind of game, but I'm still going for this game for Christmas. I was drawn in when I saw it at the E3 presentation. I've always been a sucker for playing as an animal or journeying with one, and seeing Trico for the first time really drew me in. I'm really fascinated by it and I want to learn more about what it is or where it came from. This is among the few games where I'm intentionally avoiding spoilers because this is something I really want to experience. Sure, the game is definitely not perfect, but it's not a bad game. Sure, there's going to be slow down here and there and the camera isn't perfect, but every game has a few kinks here and there. This is the kind of game that I really think I'll enjoy despite its flaws.

Honestly I agree with almost everything you had to say about it in the video, aside from the graphics. I absolutely loved the art design and detail of the graphics, made me really nostalgic for Shadow of the Colossus. I enjoyed the hell out of it, I agree it's not Shadow of the Colossus in its memorability, and gameplay, but this was what I expected it to be like for the most part, and I'm happy. This isn't a game for anyone. People whose first gaming console was a PS3 or an Xbox360 (and have the audacity to call themselves gamers) are not gonna be appeased by this title. This is for the people that know the ICO and SotC titles. You don't buy these games for the graphics, you don't buy these games to be in the "lit" club of kids that own every triple A title and brag about it. You buy these games for the feels. I got attached to Yorda in ICO (although I'm pretty sure I dislocated her arm a few times), I grew attached to Argo in SotC and the trials the main guy had to go through in order to resurrect his girl/sister/w/e, I also felt bad for killing the colossi. I struggled for a good 30 minutes to not get sucked in at the end during the final moments of SotC all the while fighting back tears. I don't give two shits for the graphics or if it should had been a PS3 title, I'm playing this game so I can have my feelings crushed again in the most beautiful way possible.
Anyone who knows shit about the previous titles or haven't experienced them themsevles (cause watching walkthroughs doesn't actually cut it for these games), should probably just stick to their multiplayer OP gfx games or jump on the hype wagon of the latest JRPG game and leave this title and their opinion of it, well alone.

    • @PouresMaggie
      @PouresMaggie 7 лет назад +6

      Azu
If you're one of the few that wants to go into this game regardless of your experience to past titles and regardless the biased reviews, then I commend you for it. All I'm saying is that the reviewers and the neft-gen "gamers" are so caught up with graphics, they have no regard of how a game can make you *feel* and *sympathyze* with a game character. The TeamIco games and Journey are one of the few games that have made me feel compassion for non-existing characters to the point I'd do my outmost best to ensure their safety. But nowadays it's all about graphics and if a game is up to par with their triple A title. Fuck all that noise, is what I'm getting at. These titles offer life lessons imo and if you wanna go in it regardless, I hope you enjoy.

PouresMaggie when I bought this game I was like I know trico is gonna fall off a a cliff and im gonna cry(he didn't fall of a cliff per say) but god damn I cried and the pain of all that happens was so bliss
      it was a masterpiece.
sotc i played without knowing about the bridge scene and it tore me up and seeing the wanderer slowly look more dead inside was a plus 1 and then the final part where you try and not get sucked in makes all the worse as you have to play out your feelings of not wanting a sad ending and physically struggling to keep it from happing by not getting sucked in
      so amazing

I wanted to play this game since I heared from it and I didn't play the other games before. I knew I would love it for the story and I was right, the bond between them two made me feel so much, there is no need to experience the other games before the last guardian, to love it, if you are into animals and friendship-stories ^^

I love this game, it can get a little tiring because of the repetition but that was exactly the same for ico and shadow. I haven't had a problem with frame rate yet but it definitely plays and feels like a ps2/ps3 game, which I really quite like, it almost erases that 11 year gap. Trico and the beautiful surroundings of this game make it equally as good as the other two games in what is now my favourite trilogy :)

Interesting looking game. I miss G4 TV which some people may not even seen but I'm an old far now at 31. Gameranx has done a great job filling some of that void for me. Keep up the great work!!

Aside from the technical issues you discussed that I agree exist, this game is perfect to me. I love it.

I feel like this game is so different from anything else thats come out this year and for that it can be appreciated! Most games never live up to the hype and its unfortunate that TLG has been hyped up for several YEARS! Definetely going to get my hands on it when the funds are there! Holidays are such a killer on the wallet :X

If you're on the fence about getting this one, treat yourself and get it. Haven't been captivated in a game's world, design, and story like this since I first played Half Life 2. Don't get me wrong though, its controls can be a bit clunky here and there, and the camera could definitely use some improvement, as well as the framerate in a few scenes, but everything else is damn near perfect. If you enjoy puzzle games, platforming games, unique and innovative mechanics, and beautiful stories, definitely pick this one up. Easily the best game of the year in my eyes.

I'm only 3 or 4 hours in and I agree with you on everything so far. Visually it's beautiful in that Ico/ Colosus style and the controls are clunky at times along with the camera, I ran into the blackness you talked about. Great review.

Played a bit of Shadow of the Colossus when I was a kid, didn't really finish it cause I didn't understand how to climb and stuff.
But I do think that there is high potential for a giant companion game like this one, but with actual combat and a open world where you can travel anywhere with your giant companion. I would buy that kind of game if it was made

    (Spoilers, sorta.)
    (Also, LONG.)
Most people who don't like this game would prefer the games with guns, swords, all that stuff. They don't really see that a game without anime, weapons, or extreme gore is good. Honestly, I've beaten this game 7 times. I'm on my 8th, and I'm climbing up to beat it 10 times before I go for a long stretch of 20 times. "Wow, lol, you have no life." Yeah, but it's my life, you don't control me.
Anyway, this game is absolutely outstanding, although the price is something else.
As stated in the video, in pictures and screenshots, this game looks dull, and just plain, however when you get into the game, it really sparks to your attention, and the game is so colorful.
Now, about the art style of the boy, yes, it does seem out of place, but they need to signify what you are controlling, and I have a feeling they knew about the camera issue they couldn't fix, so they brightened the main character you are controlling so that you know where *you are.*
The controls are also pretty strange at first feel, but you can really get used to them if you play it enough.
Trico's A.I is outstanding. "BUT HE WON'T RESPOND!" YES, but he's an ANIMAL. Animals don't know what you are saying 24/7 and won't know what you want for the first 20 seconds of pointing it out. But oh? What's this? If you keep making the boy point and make it stay that way for a bit, Trico WILL lock his head onto what you want to do if you point long enough. (Caddicarus)
Also, let me point out that there's a ton of arguing about the frame rate.
The frame rate only lasts for a few seconds, not even a minute. So be patient and chill out. Would you prefer the game to have no particles and atmospheric effects and look dull, or would you have the game be pretty, shaded, and colorful? Get over the lag, we've all had it, and this lag only happens for a few seconds.
Glitches? Bugs? Look for scratches or small debris such as fuzz on your disc. Problem solved, as once a quite large feather had randomly been clung onto Trico. I took out the disc to find a piece of dust, and when I cleaned it and put it back in, it was fixed. Good as new.
Some also say that the gameplay was just boring. So? At least you're making progress! Keep going.
But anyway, this game is awesome, amazing, and outstanding.
    The wait was worth it.
    The ending is worth it.
    The game is worth it.
    Good day.
((Also, I'm not trying to argue. I'm just making a few points and defending the game, thanks. :)

I've been waiting for this game forever, even though I haven't played either ICO or SotC. I will play through both of them in the coming weeks, and get a PS4 Pro in spring to play this, FFXV, Nino Kuni II and other exclusives.
