Considering this is one of the games you can download for free on PS5, this needs another patch to get it running at 60fps along with the added features you get with the 1.03 patch. Same goes for Bloodborne.
I agree, but Bloodborne would definitely be harder, as many of the enemies’ movements are tied to the 30fps cap, so doubling it would throw off the animations. It’s definitely possible, as people have modded it to work, but it is a bit more complicated than other games.
You're not missing much. It's nice that it no longer runs like absolute shit on PS5 (on PS4, there's a section that can play in slow motion for 10 minutes because of how poorly the game runs), but I doubt this makes up for the horrible-feeling controls, and it certainly can't make up for Trico's stubborn AI.

It looks and plays better than ever at 60. I had a great time replaying it at 60. But I did have one hiccup. I had one major crash that was only resolved by downloading the patch. The only way I could get past that one segment was to download the patch, play that segment with patch and then delete the game and reinstalling original version to finish at version 1.00 It was the bridge section shown in the 2015 E3 demo. Everytime you try to make the jump over to Trico as the platform collapses, it would freeze up. My guess is it had something to do with the scripted event that followed and maybe the scripted cut scene was transitioning down to 30fps and thus screwing up causing the lock up. But I can’t say for sure. All I know is that one section would lock up everytime I tried to play it. All I know is it was resolved once I downloaded the patch and played past that segment.
Wait, you only had trouble at the bridge? I had trouble at 2 more spots besides the bridge. That's really weird that you only had one freeze at the bridge. I also had another freeze at another bridge (the one that's kind of like a tunnel and it starts falling apart) and towards the end right before the big fight (not the one in the white tower but, the BIG FIGHT (I'm trying to avoid saying spoilers))

Funny how the collective opinion slowly changes for true masterpieces. GiantBomb didn’t even review the game, scolded by IGN, and now it’s slowly getting the recognition it deserves
From what I have seen, the general discussion around the game has been getting more divisive. Sure, the game journalist are now probably foaming at the mouth about this game, but general comments and such around the game have gotten way more polarized. At around launch, some people loved it, some liked it, some had a hard time enjoying it, and some simply hated it. Because they rather push resolution than frame rate. Which is stupid imo. Resolution looks plenty fine at 1440p and they could use those extra resources to push 60fps. You get smoother gameplay, but you also get less latency with 60 fps. Literally going from 33.3ms to 16.6 ms. They think console gamers are dumb and they just want a pretty image since they put up with 30 fps the whole last generation.
Because some developers just go with 4k + ray tracing , without giving the option to players to play games with dynamic resolution and 60fps or more, watch dogs legion for example, it runs like shit, the ray tracing is bad and the graphics are average, so whats the point of 4k + RT ?

@@DenisKublitsky you're dead wrong. Bloodborne never drops framerate. It's framepacing not frame drops. It's actually because the framerate is going too high and ruining the delivery of the frames. It's not a hardware power issue, it's a coding issue so ps5 does not solve it whatsoever
so the digital version of GoW on ps5 is 30fps? I finished the game on my ps4 pro and just booted it up once on my ps5 (with current patch) to see how it ran, and i had the feeling it ran a lot smoother than i remembered from ps4 pro.
It did come with a few issues though. You can't rename ships, multitools or anything like that and any custom names for planets and systems reverts back to the original if you log out. Loading a PS4 game on the PS5 version means it won't recognise any of your custom names. Playing the PS4 version on PS5 doesn't have any of these issues though and it will stick to 60 fps.

I loved Last Guardian with all my heart. Even got the platinum -which was a pain! Thank you so much for covering this. Hopefully someone at Sony takes note and they update this underrated masterpiece!
The Last Guardian is a thing of beauty. Not even close to being the biggest technical achievement of the generation but the art, sound, gameplay, minimalist approach to cinematography lends itself to being one of the most unique experiences in recent date. So glad to finally see it at its full potential!
The one thing about it that still impresses me to this day on a technical level though is Trico’s feathers. I feel like it’s rare you see hair that moves as realistically as it, even now. The way wind plays across it is beautiful stuff. The only thing I’ve seen that I felt could match it was (ironically) the hair on the colossi in Shadow of The Colossus PS4.
Thanks for making this video. I wanted to play this game at launch but held off buying it as reviews said it had performance issues. As soon as I started watching this I went to CeX online and bought a copy, as I think prices might rise once people realise it runs pretty flawlessly on PS5. Even if the price doesn't go up, I don't think I'll regret pay £12 for it.
Honestly, past implementations of backward compatibility (of the kind that didn't make the original games run better, only inevitably look worse on LCD screens) were kind of meh, sure not bad but not really necessary either.
Well things were different back in the day. Backwards compatibility used to just mean that the new system would run the old systems' games exactly how they ran on the old systems. It wasn't until the XBox 360 that I came across a game that was enhanced by playing it on newer hardware (Halo 2 was upgraded to 720p). So while today there is an advantage to playing games on newer hardware (better resolution, fps, loading times etc) in the past you could just play them exactly the same on the older system- backwards compatibility was more about the convenience of not needing to keep the old hardware lying around.
We really need a patch or remaster or SOMETHING! I love this game so much. It brought me back to my childhood and I felt a lot of inspiration from all the beautiful architecture. I want to play at 60fps with some upgraded controls and camera. Maybe turn down the deadzones and add a few more speeds for the character movement. Tip-Toeing to full sprint is a bit much in some sections.
Amazing game! Wish more unique video games like this were made more often. I really hope the Gen Design team is still making a new game! Thanks for putting this game out there it definitely shouldn't be forgotten as Sony has done with it!
I actually made a vid about this after playing the whole thing. if you don't want spoilers, i showed the 3 spots you need to have the patch installed without showing what happens. once you get to the following checkpoint, you can reinstall the disc version and continue it's only 3 spots out of a 12 hour game so it's totally worth it imo
GoW can be played 4K/60 from the disk afaik.... so the only thing it'd be missing is RT? Which isn't a huge problem I'd think, unless it changes the game in such a drastic way that it'd be needed.
I’ve actually been doing a playthrough at 60fps on PS5. I ran into an unskippable bug last night that required me to download the patch to get past. I don’t know if it is a guaranteed bug but I figured I’d share for those interested. During the sequence that was shown in the E3 demo where you have to jump from a breaking platform and grab Trico’s tail in slow motion, my game would consistently freeze when it hit slow mo. I had to update and get past that to continue on in 60fps.
There is another video online about this, basically you have to get the patch, get past it, save... uninstall, reinstall and load save to move on. Too much hassle for me personally. It apparently happens a few times.
Hey everyone. HUGE NEWS: YOU DON'T NEED A PHYSICAL COPY, YOU DO NEED A PS4, STEPS BELOW: Using the PSXDownloadHelper (Google it) application for Windows I was able to use the PS4's proxy server settings to download the 1.0 version the game. I then transferred this to an external storage (network PS4 to PS5 transfer will work too), and plugged into my PS5. Works like a charm- just make sure to turn off PS5 software updates or disconnect from the internet. I can confirm the game is running at 60 FPS. Side note: PS4 will not allow you to transfer the game to external storage until it is completely downloaded, that means ignoring the game when it first starts and keeping an eye on the download progress to make sure you get past the "data needed to play" stage. If the transfer to external storage or network transfer does not allow you to proceed yet, restart your PS4 (and maybe disconnect from the internet to be safe) to clear the "Downloading status" from the game. Be sure to cancel and delete any attempts the PS4 makes to download the latest version of the game. This trick should work for all other PS4 PSN titles as well.
Knowing DF's affection for solid motion blur, I'm curious to see if any of you ever feel like 60fps actually makes a game look WORSE. Obviously, it makes the game play better, but do you ever feel like the 60fps change makes certain games look less realistic or cinematic? It definitely can show some of the warts in a game more than at 30fps. Just a thought! (I don't know if I've ever picked 30fps over 60fps, all things being equal)
Thanks for the info I was looking for! If they would just simply release a 1.04 patch, that would allow you to turn off the 30Hz limiter, and nothing more, that would be amazing. They probably have Bluepoint on a PS5 version, and don't want to do anything that would limit how many people buy that release.
Just downgraded the game and got shocked to find out it really runs at 60fps on 1.00! Why in the name of all gods this game does not have an official 60fps patch os PS5? Why?? 😱
@@paulhill5846 it is impossible to downgrade the digital version. If you uninstall the physical version from your internal memory and reinstall it from physical media, you'll be on stock version, which runs at 60fps on Ps5. But be aware that there are some pretty annoying bugs and even game breaking ones, like in the 2 times that happened with me when Trico remained still when it was supposed to move. Controlling Trico seems to be somewhat easier in the latest version. I had to move between newest and stock version a few times because of those bugs.
The reason why it's locked because it doesn't run very well unlocked on the PS4 itself compared to a locked fps. Game developers lock fps all the time for performance reasons on consoles. Plus in this game they meant to put in a 30fps at launch but the code doesn't work 😂😂😂lmaoo they messed up the code on the gold version
The only way to keep unpatched v1.00 from a PS4 disc is to keep your PS5 offline all the time. If you pause the auto-download, then it'll just unpause and update when you're not looking.
So sad you cannot play in this way on digital copies... this game is also available on PS Collection Plus, all we need is a little patch with a checkbox "Unlock FPS Cap"
Maybe you can by using a certain FTP PSN downloader shareware. That being said, it's a HUGE disappointment to see all these great games in the PS Collection Plus not having any 60fps cap: Uncharted 4 Detroit: Become Human Bloodborne TLG Fallout 4 Persona 5 Batman: Arkham Knight God of War (at least 1080p 60fps works now so it's ok for me)
Fantastic news! I have the disc version in my collection but sadly have not played yet. I will definitely give this a go later this year....when I obtain a PS5 for myself.
So you do not need the disc version to play these Version 1.00 games on your PS5 (I have tested God of War & AC Unity) You just need your PS4 and PSX Download Helper. -Set your PS4 Network up to Proxy through PSX Download Helper. -Go to Library on PS4 and Select the game you want to download Version 1.00 and Start as you normally would - Psx will need restarting every 10gb but this does not reset the download progress. -Once finished downloading move the game to your PS5 with either an External Storage device or the Data Transfer in Settings **Do not let the update finish, When you launch just pause it and choose play game without updating**
I read an article, which of course I can't find now, that explains another drawback being that 60fps doubles the frame timing, making parts of the game extremely difficult. Particularly climbing the sphere in the white tower. With the frame timing doubled, it's hard to make the climb without being overcome. Not impossible, but game breaking for all practical purposes.
I bought the disc version just because of this video, and it initially ran at beautiful 60 FPS, the problem is there is no way to stop PS5 from auto downloading and auto installing the patch, even with auto download settings off, and the only way to keep playing the 60 FPS mode is to completely disable PS5 internet connection every time you want to play this game! so annoying!
Its in the freakin free plus package and didnt get a nice 60 fps bump?! after Ghost is think its an absolute nessecity to enjoy the old games. 30 just wont do.
Can confirm. Looks incredible on my ps5 (probably the only game I have that shows off the ps5's power). I just paused the update and it never bugged me. My old save file worked too even though it was from an updated version of the game on my pro.
FYI you CANNOT complete the game on the disk version on 1.00 - the game hard locks in several locations and requires the patch to get past them. Found out the hard way when playing it on PS5 about 2 months ago. DF did not mention this in the video as they did not hit the first hard lock section.
I'm trying to be clear here. From what I understand, the process is : Insert and play ps4 disc on ps5. Do not update game. Runs at 60fps If update game, lose 60fps 💁♂️ Am I close?
@DigitalFoundry please keep the positioning of the console versions consistent. You first have PS4Pro on the left and PS5 on the right and after that you got XSX on the left and the original Xbox on the right. It would be easier to follow if the most recent console version was either consistently on the left or the right. Just my two cents. Keep up the great work!

More great work here, Tom. It's a shame we consumers have to bypass certain updates to experience improved performance, 1st party support is needed here. I'm not keen on the idea of going offline and/or cancelling the update notification, I'd 100% balls it up.

Hopefully most of these will get an update, but otherwise there are still enough great games to play in the mean time, but wouldn't want to miss out of those probably. Let's see what the future brings.
Too bad that the sticks still have a 50% deadzone applied to them in this game so turning the camera or moving is extremely unprecise and unresponsive, it's like trying to aim in a shooter with a D-pad. One of the most mind-boggling and dumbest design choices I've ever seen in a game. An ideal deadzone value would be around 5-10%.
Seems like waiting a console generation or two and then play the remastered version is the best way to enjoy many console games. But it also brings a bigger question - are games getting a longer life-span? While graphics obviously improves all the time (and graphics are important) it seems like we have reach a point in which artistic vision is far more important than the number of pixels or polygons. An aesthetically pleasing game from 2010 will be almost as pleasing today, and I assume the difference technological improvements will give us going forward will be even smaller. Going 1 to 2 pixels are huge, going 1000 to 2000 pixels far less so. Compare games 1980 vs 1990 vs 2000 vs 2010 vs 2020. Every new decade game us improvements, but the improvements have become smaller and smaller, today making it even hard to tell if a game was released in 2015 or 2020.
If it has a minimum of 24fps in ps4 @1080p, it should be possible to run native 1080p @120fps on ps5 and then use temporal acumulation to upscale it to 4k (taking samples from the current frame plus some previous ones, like quantum break did in xbox one, but much better due to the higher frame rata allowing to take twice as many samples in 1/2 the time, which also reduces artifacts). In fact, doing something like that (5x the frame rate plus advanced upscaling to 4k) would be the greatest display of a generational power leap so far.

I'm multi-plat, always have been and always owned everything, but I was against the practice of mid-gen consoles. It felt like they were no longer willing to make a stable version to work on the base consoles to focus on improvements on the upgraded ones and I think that's a terrible practice (look at Cyberpunk), so when the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X launched I pretty much stopped playing both consoles entirely and moved back to PC and Switch. That means from around 2017 I didn't play any of the console games unless they also came to PC (Detroit, Horizon Zero Dawn eventually came to PC). I also had another freeze at another bridge (the one that's kind of like a tunnel and it starts falling apart) and towards the end right before the big fight (not the one in the white tower but, the BIG FIGHT (I'm trying to avoid saying spoilers))
@@HugoStiglitz88 Yeah, that was the one spot I had trouble with and didn't have an issue elsewhere. Weird. I've heard others had similar problems with it locking up though. All the more reason the game needs a proper PS5 patch. It'd be great to get those problems ironed out and get true 60fps support for PS5 with a game that is optimized for the hardware.
@@danmann861 they probably have to look at the lock ups and see why its happening or just lock those type of moments to 30 fps to avoid issues. Either way a patch 1.04 would be epic. Native 4k is easily achievable as well

On a technical level this is awesome. On a personal level I don't know if I could handle the emotional roller coaster of this game a 2nd time
Should the question now be “Why aren’t games running at 60fps?”
Unbelievable some people said backwards compatibility was bad years ago
So while today there is an advantage to playing games on newer hardware (better resolution, fps, loading times etc) in the past you could just play them exactly the same on the older system- backwards compatibility was more about the convenience of not needing to keep the old hardware lying around.
um what? when has anyone said that?

HUGE NEWS:
YOU DON'T NEED A PHYSICAL COPY,
YOU DO NEED A PS4, STEPS BELOW:
Using the PSXDownloadHelper (Google it) application for Windows I was able to use the PS4's proxy server settings to download the 1.0 version the game.

Altrought 60hz cap makes the game smoother, in my eyes i would prefer to play as intended, 30hz fits perfectly to the way this game is, imo
One year later: still no patch.
Thanks for the info I was looking for! If they would just simply release a 1.04 patch, that would allow you to turn off the 30Hz limiter, and nothing more, that would be amazing.
Every new decade game us improvements, but the improvements have become smaller and smaller, today making it even hard to tell if a game was released in 2015 or 2020.
physical world >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> digital world
If it has a minimum of 24fps in ps4 @1080p, it should be possible to run native 1080p @120fps on ps5 and then use temporal acumulation to upscale it to 4k (taking samples from the current frame plus some previous ones, like quantum break did in xbox one, but much better due to the higher frame rata allowing to take twice as many samples in 1/2 the time, which also reduces artifacts).
In fact, doing something like that (5x the frame rate plus advanced upscaling to 4k) would be the greatest display of a generational power leap so far.

Looks like Bluepoint is working on the MGS remake.
@@laurentl7213 Yeah, MGS will be a huge endeavor (PS1 generation to PS5/Series x|s). But Bluepoint have proven they can remake/remaster more than one game in a generation. Here's hoping.
I want Driveclub with a 4K 60FPS patch. I can dream!
I'd love that too, plus a remastered Resistance collection and Motorstorm Pacific Rift.
New GT will feature 60FPS mode, so why do you need an oldie?
Sadly I think it will only be possible through emulation on pc in the future
Very cool and informative video! Thanks!
I heard that the game running at 60 fps tends to crash in certain moments. You haven't mention that
I know for a fact it freezes during the E3 demo section as you jump for Trico's tail. It happened to me & I just put the update on to get past it.
That's probably why they lowed to 30 fps. The console can't handle it.
He hasn't played that far.
@@alesssi No it's the way the engine is made to handle physics with framerate. It happens only 3 times in the same spot in 60fps throughout the game.
DF won't mention PS5 flaws
I'm multi-plat, always have been and always owned everything, but I was against the practice of mid-gen consoles. It felt like they were no longer willing to make a stable version to work on the base consoles to focus on improvements on the upgraded ones and I think that's a terrible practice (look at Cyberpunk), so when the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X launched I pretty much stopped playing both consoles entirely and moved back to PC and Switch. That means from around 2017 I didn't play any of the console games unless they also came to PC (Detroit, Horizon Zero Dawn eventually came to PC). I missed out on many of these games, but I now own a Series X and PS5 and it's the perfect time for me to go back and revisit all of these older games in an even better performing version than the PS4 Pro. Unfortunately though I don't own any of these games on disc, so I'm locked at 30 FPS on this game and God of War.
With ps plus and ps5 you get this for free but you are saying that version does not run at 60 fps? Seems like a strange decision....
I love team ico. Got shadow of colossus and ico on my xsx, now to wish to the wizards that this finds a way to my black box
Imaging patching out the best possible version of your game.
To be fair, when the patch was done, the game couldn't even maintain a stable 30 fps. This was the best possible patch when it released.
This game is so amazing!
We need a RD2 next gen 60 FPS console update, and more Harry Potter games on next gen that aren’t LEGO or RPG. Potter stories from different eras on PS5 120 FPS with Voldemort looking smooth
@Hallison Michel likes said it’s rpg , I think it looks good. But I’d like many more potter games. Star Wars has 2. The films deserve more games
@Hallison Michel we need more tho
@Hallison Michel hardly. It has global appeal. 18 million views for a trailer. We need more scarface, more godfather, and more Harry Potter
