Tonight with a pint of Thai rum, a full stomach and the family away so I can't be peer pressured to do something else, I express a deep feeling of admiration for the hundreds, if not thousands of hours it would take this player to figure out how to play this song and the others he deciphers. Praises, blessings and thanks, James James!
I was just reading his autobiography, Life, and it is lucky we got these later hits out of him because he was on the verge of it's opposite many times!😉
Thank you for all the Stones. I remember trying to figure this one out years ago. Came to the same conclusion, but wish i would have had you tube back then....lol
Top 10 fav stone songs to me,..just adore the guitar tone and chord changes in this one....JJ teaching is just as entertaining....Go!!! JJ.....rip this joint.
Great lesson, great song. One rule of thumb (though there are exceptions) with Keith: if you figure out a part and it's really hard, it's probably wrong. That's part of his genius- once you get the tuning, they're almost always pretty easy. It's genius. Great songwriter.
Just oughta say , for all of us, thanks for your all your videos! Been enjoying every time a question crosses my mind, "hmm, let's go see what the privattricker/JamesJames says,...". Lo and behold, always a pleasure!
Hi Just wanted to thank you for all your efforts . Your approach is very practical and inspiring and I love the selection of songs you present. Im in a band and Im a stones devotee so you have really helped me sort out how to approach learning new songs. Your comments are always on the mark so keep it up . Your advice about playing what you can and not what worrying about what others think is very inspiring.
Like a lot of us who subscribe to your channel I love the Stones... I don’t have your ear, so this is such great insight into the song! And a great song it is. Thx man!
Dude... You have helped me so much over the years.. all your channels.. A Thank You, isn't enough to express my gratitude!! And Thank your wife also for letting you play her half of those guitar$!! 😀🤭
AWESOME JOB....you are so correct...it really helps to know the guitarist’s technique and habits when trying to figure out a song....definitely speeds things along...rock on my brother!!!!
Great song, one of my favorites, love the groove. I vote for the key being F. Dm is the relative minor, opening note is an F. All the chords are scale tones-A,Bb,C,D,E.
These are my favorite lessons you do because either they confirm things that I thought already or it shoots me right out of the water 😂 but either way it's great teaching, much more valuable than just showing someone chords
I love this song !! And the great thing is - I don’t have to sit and work it out via Tattoo You - I’ve got you to show me exactly how it goes ! That to me is - Priceless ! Thank you loads Mr James. You are a brilliant guy to learn from. I just wish I could learn from you 24/7.... Oh ! Hang in a mo ? I can !! Lol. Incidentally I was at Redlands (back in 1981 just before The Stones UK 🇬🇧 leg of the tour) chatting with Keith’s gardener - who was a really lovely guy who’d taken over the upkeep of Keith’s cottage from his dad (who was the inspiration for Jumpin Jack Flash due to his huge 🦶 feet) and he told me Tattoo You was an album they made for diehard Stones fans - wether this is true I don’t know - but he was great to gas with. I remember Keith’s Dalmatian Tabasco (after Keith’s favourite sauce) because he got in my car - grabbed a pork pie - jumped in the back seat - dropped the pie into a tissue box full of good grass - ate the pie along with a significant amount of the grass - before we could get him out - an hour later the dog came a flopped down on the grass next to where we were talking to the gardener - his eyes completely blood shot - with the gardener voicing concern about the dog’s lethargy (he was normally very hyper) me and my band mates just kept quiet 🤫 Lol. So my claim to fame - I got Keith Richards’ dog 🐕 stoned. As god is my witness this story is completely false - ha ha ! No it’s all true actually. Great days hangin out with the Richards household. Cheers 🥂. Rx
Absolutely - I’m sure it wasn’t. The gardener told me a funny event involving the dog 🐕 next to Redlands was an upmarket caravan holiday park and Tobasco had a habit of ‘stealing’ whatever he could get his paws on - one Sunday he turned up with a huge chicken 🐓 freshly cooked and wrapped in tin foil. Keith carved it and served it up to the family for Sunday lunch - including Tobasco - naturally ! Lol.
I've always liked this song and agree that it's underappreciated. Interestingly, even though I've since learned that Tattoo You was, indeed, an "odds and sods" album, it never felt like that when listening to it back then. And I'm not sure it does now, either. In some ways, you could argue that it's superior to Emotional Rescue, even though that's a "real" album and not a collection of leftovers. It also sold a lot more copies -- probably due to the popularity of "Start Me Up."
Trigger Warning Touring in support of Tattoo You certainly didn’t hurt album sales. If they’d toured the ER album, it would have sold a boat load more than it did. That was in the days when tours supported album sales. Today, you put out an album to support the tour.
@@jamesjames9275 Yes, apparently the money's in touring now. Which is why, I suppose, the Stones have only released two studio albums in the last 20-something years, but have done many tours during the same timeframe.
Trigger Warning Tattoo You was their last superb album. It is much better than Emotional Rescue which I like as well. Start Me Up Slave Waiting On A Friend, Little T & A, Hang Fire Worried About You Tops. Fast side and a slow side to this one. Love it
Thank You Very Much For posting this!!!!! Always been a favorite tune but it pissed me off cause i figured when it came out it was another 5-string Open-G classic and i tried and tried to figure it out and could never get the sound right. You just made my Sunday Morning.😎
When Tattoo you came out, this was my most played tune, more than even Start me up, which is, of course, great. Keef had the groove not to mention the lyrics that were pretty bold for the 80s. In my opinion, it is one of the best RS albums with Mick, perhaps, at his best.
Another way to guess is the guitar he played the song with. He always used the black tele custom for that which was his main standard tuned guitar at that point.
Thanks! Your old channel had it in open G and I had a hard time reconciling with the way I play it, which is mostly this video, and what I've seen in the 81 videos. What you have here makes more sense with the open G shape on just the DGB. I'll defer to you! On another note, my sons and I are going to build some guitars (just Teles). I'm heading out to buy a table saw right now. What hardware, etc. would you (or anyone else) put in your T style guitar? I'm not enough of a gear head to know, but I'm learning. I'm not quitting my day job or anything - this just looked like a cool thing to do with the boys. Thanks, JJ!
First love this song one of my favorites and I like your video, I appreciate! I didn't know there was an argument on this song ha. I'm a big stones fan. Recently even (10? Years) in a concert I saw a video and he's playing in standard for this song. Made obvious by the opening movement. Maybe he used to play it now n then in G open but that would make some parts more difficult Edit I know Keith prefers open G 5 string and different tunings but some songs would be odd to of not been written in standard key
You're very talented bro. Amazing guitar players like you are just sitting out there in anonymity. No wonder I never learned how to play guitar. My God this looks hard. And how do knuckleheads who don't read music able to figure out all these chords. Practice I guess.
Okay, when you were younger - did it take you only 2 hours to figure a song out? I wonder how impressive you were with this skill as a budding guitar player.
Robert Mandour Well, in the early days, I chose my learning material wisely. I started by figuring out Buddy Holly and early Beatles tunes. Those come a lot more quickly than trying Yes and King Crimson. :)
@@jamesjames9275 Yeah. I catch myself trying to learn Skynyrd songs that have a whole lot going on all at once, when in reality to begin I should start learning Holly/Beatles/Stones early stuff. I hear ACDC is a nice place to start for ear progression.
Great lesson. I really like the sound of your tele. Is that a mini humbucker or Firebird pickup in bridge position? Is this a custom built guitar or is it by a big manufacturer?
I know you don’t take requests so I was wondering if you can help me out. The song Don’t Treat Me Bad by Firehouse has a chord that I can’t figure out. In the verse I think there’s a Bm but the two videos I’ve seen on RUclips play a D. You’ve got the golden ear...what do you think?
Slave is standard. You can hear Keith doing Chuck Berry licks in the solo (except a little slower than he usually does them), so that always means standard. I posted a lesson on how to play that one.
yeah this is definitely standard tuned.. sounds just like slave style... yeah those 81-82 circa video still back when he was looking over his shoulder seeing the devil still there.
First of all- cheers- great job. Second- my daughter's a Blue Devil- and my son is an ASU Sun Devil... That's definitely Sparky the the Sun Devil mascot on your Duke shirt! Where the heck did you get that???
Best Rolling Stones song ever to me, idc what anyone says lol. Always hits the spot.
I fully agree, especially this live if you haven't checked it out is awesome: ruclips.net/video/rfmkCpS97kg/видео.html

It’s up there. Hand of fate, slave, can’t you here me knocking

SO FRICKIN' COOL! I love this song, such a great little rocker. I love how you figured this out.
Good breakdown of this sign. The d minor giveaway cracks me up. You “could” but Keith wouldn’t is so spot on.
Thank you for all your great videos
Great video as always. Thanks for all them.

Another awesome week to be a James James subscriber. I'll be busy for a month. Can't thank you enough.
Such a perfect job as always!
I was 19 or 20 when this came out and I loved it. The driving guitar and Keith's voice which makes me think I could even sing this one , well maybe 😄
Just the right amount of alcohol is key to sing the stones. We may have figured this out at 4am in the garage. This applies to keith or mick songs lol
Thanks for this lesson, Awesome Guitar!
That’s some pretty good tone!🎸🎵
Dud i like your stuff sounds like your in my garage keep it up
Thanks so much for your videos! You have such a backlog, I am still going through them. I hope you're well. All the best!

Very cool, learned some new licks.Thank you, I love the stones stuff and keep my Telecaster in open G with bottom E string removed.

Great stuff, keep 'em coming James²! Txs
Many songs on "Tattoo You," were originally "demoed," or even recorded in 1978.
this is my favorite youtube channel
Nice job. Thank You!

well done on this one!!!!

That tele is sweet.is that custom shop.gret lesson too.
You're a wizard, man.
Theodora and Alexandra Richards. Two of Keith's daughters, Little T&A although it was written before they were born.
Whenever I need to know how to play a song JJ is my first look.
This is so awesome thanks for this lesson
He’s doing on it stage right now, 2024…in standard😁

How’re you feeling sir ?
So what are your echo pedal settings? You have such a killer tone and your echo box is a big part of that
Just a little echo from the amp, but dialed down to about 1.
Thx - I'm looking that echo to go w/ the Marshall crunch
yeah this is definitely standard tuned.. sounds just like slave style...
yeah those 81-82 circa video still back when he was looking over his shoulder seeing the devil still there.
What on earth have you got in that bridge position? Sounds great!
Stock Schecter pickups. They sound great in this guitar, very different from the black one.

Peavey Vypyr 100.
James James cheers for that
Ironically, Keith’s 2 daughters are T and A (ones name started with T the other with A). Not sure that’s what he was talking about in the song...
Algun mexicano escuchando esta Joya de Musica Y el Musico Tambien xd :)
off the top of your head, you pick 3 tunes in open G w/ minor chords. you are in deep. lol jolly good lesson. Ü ♫
