The people saying SY shouold have 'swung for the fences' and drafted a pure goal-scorer, are missing the context that SY has found himself in since arriving. Holland had left a completely bare cupboard, and on top of that, when Detroit might have had a chance at a generational talent or two, we never got luck with the draft lottery. Highest we ended up with was a # 4 and a # 6. So, that being said, the Wings are going to be a team that wins primarily with defensive hockey, and lots of forwards who are strong defensively as well--think LV vs. Edmonton or Colorado. The pure scorers we're going to get are more likely to be established players acquired through free agency. IMHO.
@@cmskid20Not blaming Holland for everything but just stating the demonstrably poor signings and draft picks that Holland made in the last years of his tenure clearly weighed very heavily on the first few years of Yzerman's time. Yzerman's draft picks have clearly been much, much better than Holland's and than most other GM's as during Yzerman's tenure, the draft pick cupboard is widely regarded as being one of the best stocked in the NHL. Some of his free agency signings have not worked out as well as hoped, but I think we need to cut the man quite a bit of slack--even with established players, you can't ever be sure how they are going to fit in a new system and in a new town. Sometimes a change of scenery is all a player needs; sometimes the change of scenery reveals that the player isn't that good anymore. Win some, lose some, but when you look at it, the Wings have improved every year over the past 3, and were one point out of being in the playoffs the past season. That's pretty darn good progress compared to where the team was at the end of Holland's time. Just sayin'.

What I got out of his answer was the number one priority is resigning Kane or filling the scoring winger hole long term.
