OHL Championship and lost in final of Memorial Cup. Ohhh man, your assessment looks pretty putrid now doesn’t it, hasn’t aged well at all!

For Yakemchuk, I think he knows the needs of the Sens and he admits that Yakemchuk is a great RHD. But, the fact is that the Sens passed on many more valuable players, such as Parekh, Buium (who can play on the right side) and Dickinson (even if he’s lefty). There was also forwards that are way better than Yakemchuk, like Catton. At the 7th overall, I think you should draft the best player available, and this wasn’t Yakemchuk (even if he’s a great player). The value that you get can be traded after!!

With such shake ups in the end result of the first round this year perhaps there’s more at play than outsiders realize. I find it surprising that some players dropped as much as they did. Not really surprised by the rising of some guys as the far drop of others. Time will tell but an example for the Leafs and Sens would be Zibanejad and Reilly. Both fan bases LOST it when they were drafted. Turned out to be good picks.
As a Sharks fan I can’t be happier with how this year went. Dickinson was a steal at 11, Chernyshov at 33 is fantastic as well. Should surgery, moved up to KHL, all dropped his stock but his ceiling is so much higher than 33rd overall. Celebrini is obviously the crown jewel for us but man we made out like bandits

I think you were too kind to Anaheim. Even if they end up being right about Sennecke, there's nearly 100% chance he'd be there at #6 and most likely at #8 even. That pick had big trade value when you know how much a lot of teams wanted Demidov or even Lindstrom. Could probably have added a pick in the 35-40 range plus something else AND still gotten Sennecke.

Obviously we won’t know in a couple of years, but we can imagine that Sennecke fits the mold the ducks want and are willing to use the top 3 pick for, the ducks also have gauthier, Carlsson, McTavish, Zegras, Terry and new up and comers this season who are NHL ready.
Is Sennecke at 3 a reach? Sure, but Verbeek and Madden know what they are doing and will make sure Sennecke pays off.

Sorry to hear that Craig, I tried to limit myself to talking about guys who I thought had NHL potential as to not overwork myself, but I can give some more thoughts here.
Ben Sawyer: Didn't see much of him, but like Vanacker, great on the rush, consistent give and go game and could be a major transition asset.
Owen Protz: That kid will hit anything that moves, but his hands are unreliable in the OFF zone and his skating isn't impressive at this point. Major WIP.
Tyler Thorpe: Even as an overager he's incredibly raw, but his shot and frame are his biggest assets and he understandably relies on them a lot. Outside of those two things, not a whole lot there IMO.
Only other one in this class I've paid attention to is Ben Merrill, the shot is incredible and he loves to release it anywhere in the OFF zone. Good physical traits (even if his hitting can leave him out of position sometimes), the big weaknesses to me are the skating and decision making. The skating is just awful at this stage, it's clunky, and it takes him a long time to gather motion and get going up the ice. Add to that a player who struggles to make reads quickly, and I really don't see an NHLer there. Should be solid in college though with Harvard.

If you're picking 16th in this draft you can either go high floor low ceiling and get a solid NHLer or take a chance and possibly end up with a star. Ohgren, Rossi, Faber, Heidt, Spacek, Kumpulainen, Wallstedt are NHL ready in short order. Now you add in Buium, plus Lambos, Peart, Specek, Hunt and the Wild will have assets to also dangle in free agency next summer as there is only so much room in St.Paul. Need to get bigger and the trade with Boston for Lauko shows Guerin will retool the bottom 6. With that trade they also moved up to 122 to take a flyer on Kiviharju - great trade. Chernyshov getting drafted by Saginaw and terminating his KHL contract is a huge win for the Sharks. Such a steal in the 2nd round.

I disagree with the sens being the worst draft. I think they did very well prioritising size and speed with hard hitting and violence

It’s funny that you comment on Hague’s lack of speed when the scouting reports I’ve read discuss speed being a strength of his and that he’s a fantastic skater. Odd.
