Oh, bro, I loved that guy lol. We both cringed at the same things the whole movie. Made the secondhand embarrassment a little more bearable.
Keep in mind that Embarrassment IS a counterpart to Sadness. He could've had a change of heart for that reason because he's the only one who can relate to her in helping Riley.
Sadness is the only one shown to understand embarrassment which is how they get a friendship

Embarrassment helps Sadness because he's become embarrassed of what Riley has become. Under the umbrella of embarrassment, he is also Riley's sense of shame.

Just like all the other emotions, he also helps Riley in his on way, his job is to tell Riley whenever her social status is being diminished, so she can prevent from it repeating, one thing I noticed is that just before he finds Sadness he is looking at a memory, specifically the memory of Riley's old friends being annoyed at her for the whole sarcasm scene, so you could say Riley is feeling embarrassed in hindsight for how she treated her friends, and right after that Embarrassment starts helping Sadness

Embarrassment started out as Anxiety’s enforcer, but realizes that he feels bad about what’s he’s done and what’s right for Riley, that’s why I like him, he’s a sweet guy, he just needs better friends, hence why he helps sadness since they relate to each other
Embarrassment is the term that Pixar decided to go with, but generally in introductory psychology this feeling is referred to as shame. In some ways his actions in going against anxiety reference the role that our natural sense of shame has in counterbalancing the extremity in any one emotion. The natural role of our sense of shame is more oriented towards outward behavior as opposed to inward. Every other emotion focuses on how Riley interprets things in relation to herself, embarrassment’s focus is on actions as they relate to others. Often we repress emotions *out of* a sense of shame or embarrassment. Puberty tends to be a time where we experience a lot more of it because it’s when we gain a wider sense of social dynamics.

It was actually pretty symbolic that he was the one to turn against Anxiety first and help Sadness, because right before he found Sadness he was looking at one of Anxiety’s memories for Riley.
He was embarrassed over past actions.

That sort of matches what embarrassment is, aside from the character just having an embarrassing appearance. Being embarrassed is intimidating, and we do a lot to avoid it, but it usually doesn't hurt us in the end.
(SPOILER ALERT)
Embarrassment also realizes that the things that anxiety is doing aren’t as good as they could be the moment they all blatantly lie about the group that Riley likes, and consequently reject her friends completely.
When he decides to help Sadness, before catching on her, he’s looking at the memory of that specific moment… maybe he even felt embarrassment as he realized that it was wrong.
Embarrassment is there to protect you from essentially doing something super stupid in public, and it helps entering society as a functional being (atleast that’s what the emotion “thinks”), maybe he realized that rejecting your friends would make it bad for everyone in a moment like this, and that the plan of anxiety can actually cause the harm that he’s protecting Riley from (like lying about your favorite group and then being catched on the act).
At last, these emotions are trying to protect Riley from something that could happen, since they’re by the influence of anxiety, and embarrassment ultimately decides that maybe the path they’re taking is not the one best for Riley (and… well, he was right).
I'd say Dr.Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb is a great example of a Sympathetic Antagonist!
I mean he is trying to take over the tri-state area, it's just there's only one person who cares if he accomplishes that or not.

i thought of it as how it was shown, we often hide sadness out of embarrassment, because anxiety needs it to look like riley isnt sad about leaving her friends behind. They more like concepts, not very much characters.
They are concepts given character. Something Pixar loves doing.
And embarrassment hid sadness in the film.
Anxiety can definitely be overbearing so it’s natural for embarrassment to avoid conflict and just go with it. But I’m happy he stood up for what’s right and helped out sadness at the end.
I agree that it’s difficult to write a sympathic antagonist. We don’t think anything of it at the time but when you break it down then it makes you appreciate the writers even more.
I think that embarrassments growth in the movie reflects Riley irl, like how she’s embarrassed to admit she needs help and to realize her ways of impressing Val are destorying her mental health. Nothing in these movies aren’t thought out, every story element is a metaphor for something happening to Riley
Something I really appreciated was the ending. The movie shows that she didn’t have an anxiety attack because Val and her friends are bad people, she was just doing too much to impress them. They show that just because they’re older kids and unknowingly swayed Riley away from her friends, they still just genuinely wanted Riley to be comfortable and wanted to bond with her. I appreciate that so much

I wish Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui were fleshed out more and shown how harmful they could be if they go overboard, like Anxiety.
Riley could be scared of embarrassing herself by messing up during practice, thus no longer wanting to do anything that would put her in an uncomfortable situation and losing motivation.
Riley could have felt envious that her friends were going to the same school without her and envious of how good Val is (rather than only admiring her), thus making her want to be better at hockey and make new friends.
Ennui could be Riley giving up- she no longer has interest in hockey after all the stress she is going through

He has his purpose and he does it well, even if he's not persistent about it
You keep posting this same comment and I still disagree. Idk how any of that would tie into the themes of feeling "not good enough" without it being cluttered and bloated. What we got works and it works well
Anxiety was the main factor of the themes of feeling imperfect but all the other emotions had their roles even if it's minor and tie into the themes masterfully. Envy was the main motivator for what Riley wants and her ambitions most of the time and feeds into Anxiety's desire for Riley to fit in. Envy is the one to point out the objects of desire and Anxiety pushes Riley to attain it and projects the consequences if she fails, as such, they make a great combo for feelings of inadequacy
Ennui is a regulator for Riley's attitude and enthusiasm, and masks her true feelings to seem more "cool", such as acting nonchalant to Val's request to join her group, is responsible for making Riley act like she doesn't like the band she likes and also is responsible for bridging distance between her and her parents in the ending. She falls into the theme of "acting like someone you aren't"

All of this ties into the theme of "I'm not good enough" perfectly. Would it be nice if they did have more screentime? Absolutely. But just cause they didn't get more screentime doesn't mean they are completely worthless either. They had their roles and they do it well, even if it's minor. Their roles are greater then the sum of their parts

It's so crazy that everyone's been asking for a antagonist everyone could hate and love for being so evil then when Anxiety and her gang comes along, people fall in love with her.
Because what people want is for a villain to go with the story if there needs to be one. King Magnifico from Wish was billed as a classic disney baddie. What we got was a sympathetic villain who got a fate far worse than what he deserved.
Frozen didn’t need a villain and then the Hans twist came out of nowhere.
In Inside Out 2, all the characters and roles make sense and there’s no need for a villain.
So we as an audience just want things to make sense and flow which is what Inside Out 2 does.

@@MATAX5 but the bad thing about the way Magnifico is written is that he does have valid points about limiting the wishes on the grounds that some of them are too vague. His only mistake is that he doesn’t give the wishes back to people (possibly again to maintain order in the place he founded together with his wife after his hometown was destroyed). And if it was shown that the people are like zombies after losing their wishes, I can see why Magnifico keeping them would be bad, but that’s far from what we are presented in the movie. In addition, Magnifico didn’t even know keeping the wishes would give him power until after opening the evil book. That’s why he fails as a villain. All the pieces were there to make him straight up evil or to make him a sympathetic baddie. Disney didn’t commit in either direction and that’s the problem. Even the way his wife reacts after he was trapped in his own staff doesn’t make sense. She was happy after spending years with him, loving him and being his voice of reason. Compare that with Waternoose and Sulley. Although Waternoose had to be arrested, Sulley was clearly shown to be unhappy about it because they had been friends for years.

I would say that he is following Anxiety because he doesn’t want to stand out and be embarrassed.

#caseoh is diabolical work
1. Out of all the emotions, I think he does his job the best, pretty much never overdid himself with stuff like the console.
2. Considering the type of character he is based on his screen time, and considering the fact that he only has line towards to the end, he is one of the most well written emotions in my opinion. A lot of worthwhile development and progression in what little focus time we have of him.
Also at that point in the movie, the original emotions were clearly starting to lose touch with Riley, at least before the resolution in the end. Not to the extent that they would be irrelevant for the foreseeable future as Anxiety states, but they were showing off as liabilities more than they were helpful to Riley's start in high school. A lot of it is very much instigated by Joy and the OGs if you will.
Isn’t Anxiety a sympathetic antagonist as well? Because she just wanted to protect Riley and prepare her for her future, unaware of the consequences of her actions until she completes her “I’m not good enough” Sense of Self. Envy also has good intentions and had no idea Anxiety’s plans were doing more harm than good until near the climax

I thought about Embarrassment being a pushover. He clearly cares about Riley but so do the other emotions, just in different ways. By the end, Joy’s influence helps the new emotions be far healthier.
Embarrassment ironically is usually opposed to Anxiety but because he’s pressured into situations, he felt like he had no choice in the matter.
Once he realises how embarrassing Riley is acting, he takes a stand against Anxiety in order to help Riley see sense in the end and thanks to Sadness and Joy is able to help Anxiety see the error of her ways and allow Riley to deal with her anxiety attack, comforting Riley with the big group hug.
He became a fan favourite because his social awkwardness was adorably endearing. He’s a sweetheart at the end of the day. He’s just looking out for Riley.

I think this was actually part of the plan. AT the end of the day, is embarrassment is the one who takes off the og emotions and is the pefect emotion for that.
How many of us did hide their emotions with fear to being judge? or being ashamed of expressing who we are? Embarrassment was the perfect emotion for this and the desing fits so good. A powerful giant who is shy.
And with the time, less embarrassment is more Bravery and that is why he could speak with no fear. This film has so much thought behind it

Embarrassment bottled up the emotions; what I saw happening was that Riley was too embarrassed to show her other emotions, so she tried to act like she didn't have any others as an attempt to fit in.

If you do make an Ennui video, you should mention the Oxford definition, "a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement." This is the opposite from what I thought it was from the movie, a force that encourages laziness and acting cool, when it's actually the force that takes someone out of being lazy because of dissatisfaction with it.

Just because Anxiety was the antagonist in 2, doesn't mean she's excluded from being a protagonist in 3
She got her development, she learned her lesson, so it's unlikely she'll be against any other emotion, unless it's a new one that also overtakes Headquarters or does something wrong
That applies to all other 3 emotions
They opposed the main characters, but it was not with ill intent at all, just wishful thinking and desperation near the end

Is he really an antagonist though? He never WANTED to imprison the other emotions, and his intentions were never misaligned with the originals. The concept of a sympathetic antagonist doesn’t necessarily make sense for embarrassment.
This goes without saying, but killing off sympathetic antagonists is a completely diabolical move. So diabolical, in fact, that it can make the protagonist a villain.
I don't even think Embarrassment was completely on board with Anxiety's work ethic from the start, he was just too shy to stand up against the boss.
I feel as though most Batman slander should be aimed at the comics, where they regularly put him up against god-like entities. I do think that Batman works best as a tactical espionage character who is willing to choose reforming his villains over killing them. It’s why he wasn’t the one to stop The Ventriloquist from shooting down Scarface in BTAS. In Brave and the Bold, this Batman’s actually implied to be really late in his career, at around 40. He’s actually one of my favorite Batmans since with Brave and the Bold, they can have funny moments like when Batman split up into different personalities with one eating nachos, but then have an episode like “Chill of the Night” where Batman confronts Joe Chill and we finally see Bruce Wayne underneath the cowl. I do think Joker lost his cool a long time ago, he’s just really boring now. I do think Aquaman’s speech to Captain Atom was perfect, he’s braver than most since he lacks superpowers, but he’s still willing to go toe-to-toe against people that are stronger than him. Most Batman media does feel like they want Batman to challenge gods and it is really annoying.
I feel like your script loops around on itself a lot, repeating similar phrases 2-4 times over. Still a good video, just got a bit distracted with that.

I ended up liking Embarrassment a lot more than I thought I would when I saw Inside Out 2. I really liked that his timid and quiet disposition came from personal insecurity and not because anyone else was being mean to him, I personally can very much relate to that. And the fact he doesn’t speak ends up making his development more interesting. And the moments he has with Sadness are actually pretty cute.
I liked that he went from believing in and going along with Anxiety’s plan to secure Riley’s future, to doubting her plan enough to indirectly assist Sadness, to being pushed to take action himself by freeing Sadness and being the first one to try to rip the new sense of self out.
Embarrassment was a pretty good character overall.
I definitely liked him a lot, and the moment he decided to help sadness, was the good realization he was gonna be fleshed out, eventually building up to his singular line, which was worth it.
I say envy is probably the ignorant antagonist,since she doesnt know about her evil acts and such
