      @@JMaeSono hi i hope you answer this! this is a major question i have. im still in high school and look for sonography schools but i am confused. do you go straight into a sonography school or do you have to do med school then a sonography school? please answer

    • @JMaeSono

      @@mimimedeiros2982 you do not go to med school before starting an ultrasound program. Med school would be an entirely separate think like if u wanted to become a radiologist or other kind of doctor. Ultrasound school is typically a two year program in which you receive either a diploma for associate in applied science of diagnostic medical sonography or a certificate. Some programs you can go straight into after high school and complete like your general college courses already in the ultrasound program, and other programs you will go to the college first and take all your general classes and then apply to the ultrasound program at the school and get in based off ur grades in prerequisites, TEAS test grade etc...

    • @JMaeSono

      Every school is going to be a little bit different, so I cannot tell you with absolute certainty, but I do know that AAS is used for programs with specialized training (like DMS) that prepare you for the workforce immediately upon graduating, whereas with AS, you get that AS degree, but usually continue school to get a Bachelor's at some point. I hope this was helpful and my best advice would be to reach out to your school or even check their website to see if there are instructions for applying to your program.

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад +1

      Hey! So my classmates and I have been very fortunate that our program is currently face-to-face. Most sonography programs only take a limited number of students (mine has 16) so we are able to maintain social distancing guidelines in class and lab; desks 6ft apart, masks and gloves, plastic shield as a barrier b/w sonographer and "patient" (we scan each other in lab). The school in general has also made modifications to the campus to ensure health and safety. As far as clinicals, I know there was 1 or 2 sites that decided not to take students for a while earlier in the year, but luckily my school has a lot of connections and we will all have a clinical placements starting in October unless anything changes from now until then. Hope this was helpful and I'm so happy you liked the video!

    • @sarapetry5890
      @sarapetry5890 Год назад

      My pre-reqs took 3 years to complete before qualifying for registering to enter the program. Most credentialed sono programs (that I am aware of) do not allow you to even sign up for the program until you complete the pre-reqs. You must also complete an entry test (TEAS). If you do not pass the pre-reqs with a B or above, you are put to the back of the line. A grade of a B- is a failing grade unfortunately, so you will likely have to retake the class if you get a fail grade. My school's pre-reqs: (in order of ones I most recently took first, to last) DMS 101, Medical Based Physics, Regular Physics, Bioethics, Trigonometry, Medical A&P 1, Medical A&P 2, Communications, Business English, Regular higher level English (pre-req to business English), Physiology, and a humanities class.

    Hi, did you have to take trig for a pre-req? Or at least before you took physics?

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад +2

      Hey, nope no trig. One prerequisite was conceptual physics which included very simple math, it was mostly understanding basic concepts. Then once in the program we have ultrasound physics which is all about sound waves and how the ultrasound machine works. It’s very specific to the career and to the SPI exam. Again the math is very simple, it’s more about understanding relationships between different things. Like if this goes up then this goes down because blah blah blah.

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад +11

      Anatomy and physiology was definitely challenging for me, but if you put in enough effort you can do well, I would recommend not taking any other classes at the same time so you can focus on it 100%. Conceptual Physics I did not think was too hard. The math is very simple and if you understand the basic concepts you can answer any question. It’s mostly relationships like how one thing affects another. In the sonography program so far I have been doing really well. I do not find the classes extremely difficult, but I would not say that they are “easy”. I dedicate soooo much time and effort to do well and I know it has been a lot harder for some of my classmates, so I think being able to manage time wisely and obviously being very passionate about what you’re learning is important.

So that’s how I know the actual numbers. Do you mind if I asked what happen if you don't be selective to be 16 students?

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад

      If any of the top 16 people did not accept their invitation to the program, then the open spots would go to the applicant with the next highest scores, but once all 16 spots are filled up and if you don’t get selected nothing really happens, you would just not be in the program. That’s why it’s important to have as competitive an application as you can. Maybe retake some classes to get better grades or retake the TEAS to get a higher score before applying the next year. It’s also a good idea to apply to more than one program and even more than one school, so that hopefully you will at least get into one.

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад +1

      There was not a specific SAT score requirement for my program just the to get into the college itself which is typically not anything crazy. The entry exam that was required for the sonography program was called the TEAS, which is similar to the SAT but it is for allied health students so it’s heavier on science and anatomy. Every school will have slightly different requirements so make sure to research the specific program you will be applying to. For my program the minimum score required for the TEAS is an 80% and the average GPA for accepted students to the program is 3.6.

    I was able to get into a cardiac Sonography program as an LPN without needing any pre reqs

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад +2

      Echo is different than DMS, some programs have a small cardiac section in their DMS program, and other schools like mine have two different programs since they are two different careers. So I don’t know the requirements for echo since I am in DMS. Also there are lots of programs that do take students that are already licensed medical workers in a related field since they already took the basic classes needed to get their current degree/certificate/license, and have real life experience, those would be your pre reqs. Everything in my video is my personal experience as what is required for my specific program and the other accredited schools I looked into in my area. Most accredited schools follow the same guidelines to maintain their accreditation. Congrats for your acceptance and good luck!

      Yes and No!
      So, my sonography program is 2 years (5 semesters).
      Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall, Spring.
      However, in most cases, there are prerequisite courses that need to be completed before applying to the sonography program. Depending on the school/program, the required prerequisite courses, and whether you are a full-time or half-time student, the time it takes to complete these prerequisite courses can vary. It took me 2 years of being a half-time student to complete all my prerequisites, and now I am in the ultrasound program which consists of 2 years of education in diagnostic medical sonography. So, all together I will have been in college for 4 years, but some programs are set up differently and some people are able to take more classes at the same time than me.

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад +2

      It really just depends on how your program is set up. Some are very fast paced and others are more spread out. For me it will be 4 years. I was less than a half time student for 2 years.

      There are quite a few prerequisites for sonography programs, basic college math, English, electives, and then anatomy/physiology, physics and some of these classes have lab components as well. In this video I explain all the classes I had to take before applying and other important things to know about getting ready to apply to a DMS program. Good luck!

    Is anatomy labs required? I do not want to do that because I will probably faint. Is there any way out of it?

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад +2

      Yes anatomy lab is required, you can’t learn everything from the book, you have to see things in real life, there are experiments and looking in microscopes and dissections, it’s all very important to actually learn and understand not only the anatomy but the physiology of the body. Also the things you’ll have to see and do and clinical and as a sonographer can be a looott more gross than anatomy lab, so that’s something to think about when choosing the career path, it definitely wouldn’t be fun for the squeamish, as a sonographer you have to assist in procedures like biopsies and paracentesis, you may be present during surgeries and traumas etc...

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад +1

      At my school in anatomy lab we had to dissect cats and I literally cried the first couple times but u have to do it and eventually for me I got used to it and was fine. I never actually made the incisions, I let my classmates do that, but I had to look because it would be on our exams, there’s no blood or anything, it’s really not as bad as you might think.

    • @JMaeSono
      @JMaeSono  3 года назад +1

      Also sorry for the 3 part response but my program actually has had sonography students faint at clinical, it happens when you’re learning and seeing things for the first time , but as I mentioned sometimes really gross things are part of the job and you get used to it.
