Restoring broken vintage flashlight/lantern - Restoration project

- Опубликовано: 25 окт 2024
- This weeks restoration project, vintage Wonder flashlight/lantern, cost me only 0.7€. It is very patinated and had a bit of rust and as you will find out later on the video there was other issues too..The restoration started as usual by disassembly. The flashlight was very pleasing to diassemble, so many little parts but still so simple. Kind of like legos.
After the disassembly I removed the old damaged paint. The light was repainted with base coat and blue spray paint (RAL 5105). Then I remade the French text which I believe is telling me what type of battery to use. I used regular 4.5V battery I don't know if the text is telling me otherwise. The text was remade on Photoshop. I used most similar font I could find. It only had slight differences. This was printed horizontally mirrored on back paper of sticker printing paper. I used clear glue to attach the printer color from the paper to the lantern. Then the flashlight was clear coated with 2K spray lacquer.
I polished all the metal parts and removed any rust/oxidation to get good contact between the brass parts. The other parts needed only a cleanup. After assembly I noticed the lamp didn't work. I didn't try it first because I didn't have the battery. I quickly noticed it was missing a piece of some kind. There was only one contact to the bulb. i made new part from brass sheet. my sheet was slightly thicker than the original one. After some experimenting with the right shape I manged to get the lamp working beautifully.
Thanks once again for watching. Please leave me some feedback and if you like what I do, consider subscribing and don't forget to hit the bell icon to get notifications as my upload schedule is still not very consistent. I do my best to get a video out every week.

*This battery reconditioning program exceeded my presumptions. It worked on any drill battery, several AA and AAA batteries, **batery.repair** and any camera battery. The steps are simple and the act itself is exciting to do. No matter what type of battery you`ve got, it is sure to function again!*
When you scratched off that screen printing my heart broke, but then you restored it and the writing looked brand new it was awesome. Keep up the good work.
It never gets to as beautiful as before restoration. Total waste of time to scratch the old beauty.
Dan Cliff I know I got mad too I personally would’ve left the interior alone it looked decent, but at least he re printed it
@@SajadVafa I am always in a conflict with these things. On one side, I love old stuff, on the other side - as an industrial mechanic - I have a great interest to repair things.
But some old items never ever should get restored, because they have kind of their own spirit and they are just good as they are, so I can understand you.
Have a good day, my friend!
I actually like the distressed look better. Though the restoration is excellent.
Agrees. Feel like there is more of a history to this piece. I prefer the restoration of broken things or beyond a little bit of weathering. Though he did do an amazing job with this restoration.
I feel like that with a lot of things he restores. But I still love watching it as he does do a very respectable job at restoring it.
Yes, he's very good, love the videos. But...it takes 50+ years to look that vintage, and just 50 seconds with spray paint to destroy it. Should have serviced this one, not made it look brand new. It didn't need it.
100%
Same thoughts over here. Loved the old and used look, repainting it removed much of its charm.
Making use of the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxcJ22tnHH9l1vjdIdEIG27iOG55P7LXI8 reconditioning plan, I just saved 2 auto batteries from being completely junked. The guides were very simple to follow. I wish I would have found this years ago! You may use the guide to recondition any battery type
I'm glad that you repainted the flashlight in the same colour scheme. I quite like that shade of blue.
if you had printed out the text "subscribe", instead of the french writing, i would have lost my entire mind
This comment actually made me laugh out loud. This is very rare.
Instant unsub
everytime you throw or hit the shipping box in the beginning of the videos, it gives me life
I want nothing to disturb me when I watch your videos, however,my kids watch it with me sometimes. We have many things to restore but tools and the know-how are limited, but you've given me ideas not to mention motivation.I wish you well, great videos.
This restoration makes this flashlight updated with the current trend. I like it!
Good job. I especially like how you replaced the text and of course replaced the missing part.
Perfect restoration, when I saw you stripping the text inside off I was like no! Then you stepped it up a notch, nice touch.
I can’t believe how clever you are, you can always improvise and make tools to do certain things. Your attention to detail on every small part is phenomenal. I love your channel. Cheers from Australia. 🤗🇦🇺
I appreciate your detailed descriptions as you proceed. It helps me understand what you are doing and why. Thumbs up!
Inspiring I have literally hundreds of these flashlights! Now I have an outline of how to restore them AND how some of those tools work with my dremel!!! MERCI MILLE FOIS MIC!!!!!!
Ah man, right in the feels ! I used to play with this exact model of flashlight in my grandmother's basements when I was a kid :) This shade of blue just screams vintage French, it's awesome ! Keep up the good work 😊
This is why, i always look for your videos on how you restore old stuff. Because you never change the original look . I love it ,when it looks like new😍😍 keep it up. And more videos to come..
that's the magic "never change the original look"
It never ceases to amaze me, the things you guys resurrect, and the trouble you go to, even new transfers, i will never look at junk the same way again, and will find an object to have a go at, thanks. Tony, Australia.
Thank you, really nice to hear I've inspired someone to try to do this. Greetings all the way from Finland
So glad you showed us how bright it was!! Thank you!!
Very cool and great job with the inside print. I remember my cousins had a light like that in the 70's!
Incredible work. Especially the makers mark inside of the lantern.

As a french Canadian I love seeing this lampe restored, by the way we say "voilà"😜
I guess he knew.
I'm not only love your work, but also the original look.
I often wonder if why I like these restoration videos is because I would like to believe I can one day be restored and shine too.
I cant stop watching these vids its so satisfying to see things get restored
I love cool old retro stuff like that flashlight
Very nice work buddy
Thanks man, I could say the same about your work
Me encantó esa lámpara...te quedó exelente! .Te felicito... saludos!
Torn. Love the restoration, fantastic result but it’s missing its former life. Had the same feeling when I re shelled my mini.
I would love to know more about this hobby, it seems very satisfying and rewarding
youtube recently graced me with the knowledge of your channel currently mid binge of as many vids as possible! beautiful restoration!
Loved how you were able to re-do the writing inside. Great job
Ok if you haven’t figured it out yet I cannot sleep and a. Binge watching your videos from Minnesota US. Hello 👋
This is my favorite video so far but my second favorite is the vintage lighter one
oh now ya done it, I'll to go back and watch that one, I've restored hundreds of vintage lighters.
Ah, an antique Wonder Flashlight from the 1950s at most, very beautiful design.
Отличная работа!!! С уважением из Белоруссии!
I love it!!!! Great work. Greetings from Greece. 🙏
Just watch a few of your videos first time I would say polish the metal and honestly put a bright led bulb in it with a rechargeable battery pack still it’s a very cool flashlight great job
Well done. This came out very nice. I actually like the before look better. To each there own.
Glad that you reprint the text, it's very rare to find a model this old even in France, the painted text was replaced by a sticker at the end of the 60"s. Good 4.5v batteries can last 10 years before beeing used. It's a perfect lamp in case of emergency, especially when you compare to a LED with a Lipo that die within 4/5 years even without beeing used...
I still have and use a similar one. Just as battered. Nice work.
HELLO FROM RUSSIA! THIS IS GREAT GOOD WORK AND BEAUTIFUL FLASHLIGHT! GOOD LUCK!

My grandma used to have one too.
But the writing was on italian and Varta batteries were suggested.

Excellent work, I love it, it will help me to restore an Elite vintage flashlight, God bless you. Excelente trabajo, me encanto, me servirá para restaurar una linterna Elite, Dios le bendiga.
Great job, I love old flask lights
I’m glad we have people who could translate French here. I was genuinely confused as to what it said haha
Excellent restoration almost makes one feel that you went back in time and purchased it new
This video took me to my childhood. My grandfather had one of these. I forgot the battery thank you :) greetings from istanbul
Nice attention to details, especially the print transfer which I would like to know more about.
What I love about his videos is that I put whatever music I want with it, there's no licensing issue on his end and I get my preferred music. it's also nice when the sound effects bleed through too
Beautiful restoration on this one. Nice job of recreating the missing piece!
Every little detail that's pretty good
Reminds me of the front pocket flashlight in the Silent Hill.
I have one like this at the basement, but it is army green (maybe 50 years old), and it has some add-ons, 3 plastic caps from upper side, first to covering light into one line, second is making light green, and third making light red.
Good work by the way, and you inspired me to do the same!
Loveley job fella, could I suggest you place a cloth on your work bench to stop scratching the new paint.
I Super love that label technique
Interesting flashlight and battery. But you did it justice refurbishing it. Very nice...
Thanks!
That’s wonderful job. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Would it be going against the spirit of restoration to replace the bulb with an LED? Just curious. This was a good episode.
I don't think so, but I think it's better this way. LED would be brighter but the pattern is often weird. I've actually done that to my motorcycle because the original light was practically useless and it was dangerous without street lights
I see, fair enough. Thanks for the info :)
@@GabrielKnightz yes it's mentioned only in the end because I didn't have the battery when I started and I didn't realize the piece was missing until I tried it in the end
I personally thinks LED lights sucks when it comes to vintage restoration
@@ShaikhMaaz. I agree. LEDs are all well and good for tacticool lights but that warm yellow of incandescents is part of the charm of vintage lamps.
Felicidades por el trabajo de restauración y por la edición del vídeo. Ahora tengo ganas de tener esa linterna ja ja ja.
Oh man, my father used to have that one. I used to play with it in the dark and read comic books under bed sheets. It kept breaking constantly but it was still cool.
Awesome. Like your work. Odd to see the title "Vintage" for a flashlight I owned when I was with the boy scouts in the 70's. Brings back memories :-) Thanks again !
What a beautiful piece!
Sir, you did wonderfully with this restoration

Nice work, I laughed when you shoved the box off the table.
Awesome work on restoration.... Nice touch with the text...
Get that box outa my face !,i loved that part for some reason lol , ive been watching your videos way more and im extremely satisfied you do quite excellent work ,especially on the cylindrical lighter .
hey you're only as good as your next lamp, the pressure is now on both of you, who will be the first to crumble under the blinding glare from yesteryears WONDER LIGHTS!!
Yea, though I walk through the valley of broken lamps, I will fear no other restorer, for they do not live close , my screwdriver and spray can shall comfort me.
Du très beau travail.. le marquage à l'intérieur est génial
The sticker part earned you a subscriber! Hats down for your work!
I saw this restoration a while ago and I can't stop thinking that a project can be made with an Altoids box to emulate this type of flashlights. I launch this challenge!
Bro when you just tossed the box away to the side. Hahahaha. 😂
Yes indeed great work👍
It would be awesome to stick led, battery with micro USB port. Awesome work, my grand parents used to have one like this bring back some memories of camping in the Pyrénées. Thank you :)
Great restoration. This is similar to lamps marketed in the UK by Pifco and an almost identical one by Vidor. The main difference was the UK version was "boxier", had a folding table stand/handle and a red lens on the back which was supposed to be visible while you were walking on unlit roads at night! It used the same battery.
Great job man. Silent Hill flashlight is dope!
holly shit thats the coolest torch lv ever seen its so cool and a beautiful restoration, seriously so cool
You should restore an old BBQ!! That would be amazing!!! 😁👍 Also great work on everything that you do! I love watching your videos!! Keep them coming!!
It is a beautiful lamp with a unique design. I would have liked to think about the restoration you did but with modifications, such as rechargeable battery and LED focus.
great job.
