'VEB Geräte- und Reglerwerke Teltow' is indeed the identification of the manufacturing plant. 'Teltow' is the actual place of the factory, located on the outskirts of Berlin. 'VEB' means 'Volkseigener Betrieb' roughly translating to 'State owned business/company/firm'. What it means is, that it was made before the reunification of Germany in 1990 in east Germany (GDR / DDR). It is an analogue pilot boat compass. It would have been integrated into a navigation post on the bridge of any decent mid size boat. The ones I know of were attached to a cylindrical housing about waist-high and in such a way that it could spin / rotate on all free axis. These were mass produced and exported or used by other Soviet aligned states. It is a nice piece you got there and it turned out well. Good work! Greetings from Germany.
Yep. And that also means anything with "Made in West Germany" printed on it is at least 32 years old. Like some of the parts on my ancient BMW motorcycle.
Was it military? I only ask because it''s rather nice brass work, and I know from my father that brass work was painted over on ships in wartime. Saved him a lot of polishing.
Overall, very well done, though the inside of the compass should of been black, so that the dial could be seen easier in the dark, with no light reflection at night.
This is a amazing naval/maritime Compass. The two axis allows the compass to stay stabilized even in houghest seas. Congratulations for the job, its awesome!!!
It looks great! I think the original flat black components where to make the white dial stand out with minimal light source during night operation and to minimizing glass glare. Narragansett Bay
Nicely done! I like the way you built the rest of the gimbal for the compass. For use on a vessel, you want the housing to be black inside. The diaphragm in the bottom is designed to move with expansion of the missing compass fluid. That’s why there is an “O” ring seal, as well as a washer under the knurled nut. You can make DIY fluid using a mixture of mineral spirits and liquid paraffin lamp oil. 50:50 ratio is probably fine. Thanks for sharing👍
So many comments already so forgive me if it was already mentioned, but it needs to be filled with fluid. Mineral spirits works well. Great job on the project, I did one a few months ago.
The counterweight is actually a component of the Gimbal. It allowed the compass itself to stay steady despite the ships movement, so navigation would be accurate even on storm tossed seas. Erm... I'm a geek! 🙃
Your finished product looks nice. If you heard screaming from across the planet it was me when you took sand paper to the brass parts and a wire wheel to the lead part...
Looks great but was curious after seeing you cleaning the counter and seeing the aerosolized dust if it was lead, also was any of the parts coated with iridium or any other radioactive material to make it glow?
5:40. In no export, but I was disappointed you didn't try to remove the debts and scratches in the 3 pieces BEFORE painting them. The compass still looks good in the end, but I think it would've looked a bit better if you sanded the dents out. Just my opinion. Great video.
When you showed what liquid you were putting it, I had to goggle it. I was raised on the water and was my understanding it was just mineral spirits. And not surprised I was wrong LOL But have never heard of water with it but understand after reading why. But my dad and others I knew always said only mineral spirits. Great restoration and an excellent job building the base!!! Enjoyed your video and Thumbs Up
It is more likely, but not certain, that it means 2996th unit of 1966. Usually, but of course not always, east German serial numbers were structured like that.

Magnetic compasses do not use lead, at least not those I am familiar with. My guess is that the ring is made of steel and is adjustable so the compass deviation can be adjusted. If you think of the big steel balls on a binacle compass. Another indication it isn't lead is that it could be sanded. My guess is lead would clog the sandpaper.

Dirty work. The internal perfectionist of mine is crying.

I’m sure you already know this but the reason it was black was to reduce the reflection and make it easier to see when you’re actually on a boat
You restorations are beautiful but your sense of humor and sarcasm are top notch 😅😅😅😂😂. I love it

Excellent job! I personally love old compasses. I have all kinds of them. They still fascinate me from the simplest to the advanced.
Very well done and quite creative with the new stand

Hello. Thanks for your comment. I switched to your channel and was surprised. Your Stinger is pretty fast!!!

That compass turned out super!
Wow, old fashioned compass .thanks for sharing technical vlog. Gift
Superb work! Love the new stand 👏

Looks amazing with those new colors
Awesome job you did restoring that compass. It looks like a ship compass because of the balance on the pivot screws. Great work.
c'est un compas marine that's a nice one good job
ps : boussole is the pocket size mostly used on land thanks for sharing : )
Пора за сокровищами!))
wow good restore👍👍
Outstanding! I have a lifeboat compass made during WWII by Lionel (Yes, the model RR company) that could stand refurbishment.
Looks like a ship’s compass to me too. Sailed enough boats to recognise a marine compass.

The case of a compass is never bright and shiny. It needs a contrast to the compass disk so that it can be read at night. Nice work vor the stand .

The 66/2996 probably means that is the 66th compass out of 2996 manufactured.

1:23 heavy as lead, 5:23 soft as lead, probably toxic as lead, because it is lead.

На радиацию перед разборкой проверил?
Ага, со старыми приборами нередко шли шкалы с СПД
Fantastically done job, hats off to you. I have a question was it not necessary to weld the aluminum pipes and fix them premanently in place.
Did you fill with water or mineral oil?
NEVER fill a compass with water . Mineral oil or alcohol .
