You NEED to be in a safe environment and feel safe to be able to let your guard down to be able to rest and sleep, not be "on guard 24/7" it sucks the life out of you.

Went to ❤️ doctor for palpitations, turned out to be PTSD. Best sleep advice he gave: GET UP at same time each morning. No matter what time you fall asleep, or even if nightmares wake you. The getting up regulated my body, despite unmitigated exhaustion - as I used the techniques of CBT and ate well, I at long last got restful sleep! Hope this can help someone.

sleep is either reliving past trauma or feeling still tired for me. rarely I ever feel refreshed because my day often starts with being remembered of the things I had to endure. when it's really bad, I sleepwalk with eyes opened and don't even remember any of it, it's scary for others and sucks all energy out of me.
so why would I want to go to sleep? I avoid it out of fear and wish I could just rest when I feel tired.

Also, for intrusive thoughts, I adopted a visual that I would force my mind to, so as to not ride what I call my ‘train to nowhere’. Round & round with misery. Literally had to wrench my brain away from the dark side, every night, multiple times, and every time I got up. When I needed to get out of bed, I’d make self go back in 1/2 hr; if too fatigued to walk, would sit on side of bed with eyes open (excruciating) for 5 or 10 mins, to reboot. Then sometimes my brain would make peace, and sleep would come. Much improved today.

I've had the nightmares and night terrors since my fall. I don't get much rest because of being woken up every hour on the hour. Even though I fell 40 foot and was knocked out for 10 minutes. I walked out the hospital the next day. I still expose myself to the the fear of falling again by climbing power poles everyday. Sometimes I wonder if it is something else that has caused the nightmares. I have been involved in all kinds of traumatic events from strangers to coworkers. Electrocutions, car wrecks, gun shots, being shot at. Name it I probably have seen it happen. I just try to go on with my life best I can.

I don't have PTSD, but suffered insomnia for many years. What helped me was when I broke my eyeglasses and had to start wearing my sunglasses all day long. Now I couldn't stay awake if I wanted. I will lie down thinking I'm going to read for a while and 15 minutes later I have to set down my phone because I can't keep my eyes open. I have fallen asleep with my phone in hand, dropped my phone, lost it in my covers. Fun stuff.

Best advice I’ve had in my 26yrs with ptsd, is to not try and make myself go to sleep. Sleeping pills are my worst nightmare when I’m having nightmares. I get hurt. Mild benzo and exorcise, sunshine with knowledge of my pts has brought me so far in the last 15yrs.

Cannabis will prevent 90% of nightmares. Thats smoking or vaping, not sure about edibles. The only bad thing about it is the reason you have nightmares in the first place is because that is the brains way of processing trauma. But for those of us whos brains get stuck every night trying to process the trauma I don't see why it would matter anyway.

I have this problem with hypersensitivity to sound or light. The only thing that has been helping me is listening to shrouded hand bedtime stories. His voice is so soothing. Only problem is after the video is over I wake up (about 2 hours). I hate white noise and a box fan ironically drowns out any noise I might "need to hear" and makes me anxious. Im still experimenting with the right ambient noise, hope this helps both of us.
