4:24 It's been 20 years since I've walked from San Ysidro to downtown TJ, but back then, way before the mobile phones, we would just follow the crowds, crossing the bridge over the traffic and then over the river, then you'd be in downtown. I never walked back into the US, always took the Mexicoach back then. I believe the building of Ped West changed the pedestrian flow patterns, thus this part which was once bustling is now deserted.
The side where are you exit now you also enter so now is a lot longer to get to downtown. That’s why he had to go over a couple of bridges before it was only one bridge and that’s why all the shops are empty. Those were prime locations when everybody used to enter on that side now most of the people take an Uber or taxi to their destination cusses a lot farther to go to downtown.
Back in the 1990's, all those shops were booming. There was even a Taco Bell! Then 9/11 happened, 3 hour lineups to get into the USA, along with passports now needed to go back to the USA kinda killed these businesses as the idea of a spontaneous trip to TJ suddenly needed a whole lot of planning and preparation.
Want to see how to cross back into the USA? Check this video:

13:00 I remember this bridge used to be packed full of people selling stuff and people walking... again, I think Ped West really disrupted the flow.
