- It has been an emotionally challenging day. Start with a good session of therapy, then go all day at work (focusing on work...) then driving home still thinking about this morning's session. ...
In my daughter's pre-k class, they're working on teaching the kids about emotions, and that it's okay to have emotions, and that some emotions can be hard. But it's okay. I feel like these are the lessons I go to therapy for. We were not taught that emotions are hard, .. I don't know if that was the intent, but what I learned as a child was that it is not okay to have big emotions, and I need to stuff them away. Stop crying. Put a smile on your face. No one wants to see a grouchy face on a harp video. ...
And so with this video I am challenging said internal messages. I am frustrated and grouchy. It is okay to be frustrated and grouchy. It's okay to post a video that isn't happy and "pretty". It's not okay to hit or hurt anyone, but I'm not hurting anyone by posting a video. And so that is the face you see in this video: a face of frustration, pain, loneliness, of ineffective self-nurturing judgement.
but you know what?
We may not have been taught effective emotional regulation when we were children, but maybe we can learn with our children.
I see you are frustrated. What do you need?
I need to be able to model successful emotional regulation.
This is hard. but that's okay. I'll be over here when you are ready.
