Fender MIM Vibrato Problem on a Squier Bass VI

- While setting up a Bass VI for A-A Baritone tuning, I hit upon an issue with the MIM vibrato I've installed: a disturbing, metallic plunging sound that forced the vibrato to catch with each push. Here's how I fixed it!

Great hack! So clever to use the drill for the filing. Nice one Mike, thanks for sharing!
Innovation driven by not having a lathe! Haha
Brilliant! That noise was driving me nuts and I thought I had checked everything...
Another great example of your keen eye and attention to detail. Nice one Mike!
Thank you I just got a Squire Jaguar 70s CV and it's been doing this exact same thing! I bought that guitar based on your setup video. I'm loving it , but now I'll be able to enjoy it even more!
Thank you so much for removing another reason to spend a fortune on a Mastery! Extremely appreciated. 🙌
One thing I did to my unit was filing the edge of the metal “blade”, the one that rests against the curved part with the string holes in it, to a knife edge shape. The original flat end has to “edges”, which results in wiggles instead of a smooth motion. This also improved both smoothness and tuning stability.
Did this to my road worn and now it works perfectly, thanks!
Perfect timing! My mim jazzmaster just started doing this exact thing. Thanks for the tip!
Just a reminder your the best and I love your videos. My favourite ones are your set up ones. I got my cv jag as a birthday gift and I haven't put it down for an hour.
Thank you so much friend!
Wow! What a cool and informative video! I just got my first hollow body electric guitar and it has a Bigsby vibrato (which I think works differently). I’m a little afraid to use it anyway cuz the guitar can be sensitive to being bumped out of tune. But so cool to see under the hood of these kinds of vibrato! Thanks @puisheen!
I can’t wait to see your review of the AVRI II ‘66 Jazzmaster!!
I want to play one!
@@Puisheen I heard you are having trouble acquiring one. I am patiently awaiting your stamp of approval, save the headstock. That LPB is gorgeous though!
I don’t think Fender recognizes how much weight you have with offset nerds. You should have had one a month ago.
Awesome fix! Thanks for the head's up! :)
Nice fix 👌
thank you sir
very helpful
Thank you so much. This literally saved my Squier Vintage Jazz Master for me - did this hack in 10 minutes and feels like virtually a different instrument.
That damn clickety-clacking all the time drove me NUTS!
Many mods seem to be hype for the VI, like replacing the tuners and electronics, which work fine for me. However, fixing the trem clatter on mine was essential. Unusable otherwise. It has a good trem bridge except for the bushing that makes noise. Thanks for this
This is GOLD
Ayyy! I get a metallic clang when I depress the arm on my Squier 40th JM, so this is extremely useful!
That’s squeak has been on my to do list on my bass 6 forever lol. Good to know!
That is fascinating!
Clever thinking. There's almost always a way to improve something without scrapping it altogether provided it's not broken. Some bean counter probably determined they could save $.0001 by skipping the machining of that piece.
Very interesting, I had this issue on my MIM Classic 60's Jag. Must have been the same thing, but honestly I just traded that thing in for nicer Jag, but this is great info.
I had this issue with my Vintera Jaguar vibrato. It sometimes went away somehow and then came back, especially when adjusting the spring. I eventually lubricated the spindle and that was it for me
Clever solution!
Legend 🤝
Mike is such a clever boy.
I have my bass VI setup the exact same way, mim vibrato and staytrem on a-a baritone! Haven't had that issue, but it's good to know nonetheless.
Love it.
To quote Shakespeare, “ay, there’s the rub.”
Fender needs to hire you, you would find so many things and make QC amazing. Head offset QC guy lol perfect postion for you I think.
I would do my level best!
Damn! I’ve had this problem for years! I always wanted to ask you about it but figured you get ask a billion offset questions a day so I never bothered. Well at least I know know.
I love broad shoulders on our host, but not on a spindle. Nice job using the drill and the file, Mike.
I feel like there's a t-shirt idea in there haha
@@Puisheen Indeed.
Hi Mike, could we hear more about this baritone bass vi in a future video?
Oooooh I love tricks of the trade & I’d love to own a bass 6, would you recommend the Squire bass 6 Mike? 👍🏼
I both recommend and own!
Hey man, just found your channel and I LOVE IT. I’m a HUGE offset guitar guy. As well as a tech (this is my band’s account)
I have one question. You’ve mentioned preferring thicker strings on your jazz masters. Why is that? Just curious if I’ve missed something. Thanks!!
I've always played 11s generally, but the Jazzmaster and Jaguar were designed in an era where thicker strings were the norm--most of the complaints about the bridge saddles and thin tone seem to have started around the time with light gauge strings became the norm. As a result, 11-50 is usually the smallest string gauge I tend to recommend, though with a little extra work the stock configuration can work well enough with 10-52/46
@@Puisheen oh wow, I honestly was not aware of that. Thank you! Can’t wait to try some 11s on my jag. Thanks for teaching me something today! 🖤
Lovely
I get a thunk-thunk with my Vintera 1 Jag trem action ... I wonder if this is the culprit? I've already bought an AVRI unit to replace it, but I'm definitely going to check when I swap it out.
Wow, we have two Jags affected like this. We wonder if those spindle pieces that are shaped like cones are available cheap? If so might be easier to buy them. Does anyone know if in fact they can be bought?
Hey mike! I’m coincidentally starting to upgrade my bass vi (thank you for your article on m&m guitar bar about your own personal bass vi adventure) I’m wondering, what bridge is on this particular bass vi? Is it a stock mustang bridge or a wider one? Thanks!
Stock CV bridge on this one
Heck yeah!
What strings did you use to get A-A tuning on a bass VI?
They were StringJoy 14-64 if memory serves!
... and this is why Fender should have you on their payroll.
Lithium grease shut mine up adequately. Out of curiosity @puisheen, I see Fender sells the US widget and bolt as a separate part set - do you know if that will retrofit with the holes and spring on a CP trem?
Dude. Yes! Thank you! Hahaha
Is a BassVI conversion the best way to get a baritone? They're incredibly hard to find and I've wanted one for AGES.
Also, is A to A the standard for Baritone? Or are there other options?
I have a Gretsch G5260 Baritone and see those in stock at a lot of places right now. Same with the Squier Classic Vibe and Paranormal Cabronita baritones.
I believe baritones are usually tuned B to B
Personally I prefer a 27-28" baritone scale. 30 feels so taut to me, I just don't enjoy it as much. That said, lots of folks are digging the tightness of the 30" scale
Hey what strings do you recommend for baritone guitar on a Bass VI? I bought a set of D'Addarios and the highest string didn't have enough length to do more than 1 wrap around the post and it wouldn't tune up to pitch as it was slipping under tension.
Oh yeah that can be a problem with VIs converted to baritone. My best advice is to check out Kallium strings, a company that does totally custom sets and offers quite a few options for the Bass VI.
I'd like to hear a bass IV strung A to A, or B to B. How do I make me a baritone with a vibrato "beauwieowowowWOWwww".
Normally JM with a bass IV spring? 🤔 gauge 13/14 🤔
Great tip! You'd think they could just engineer that correctly in Mexico to begin with. It's a cheap and simple fix.
One would hope, but alas
good jod!
Hey Mike this is something very interesting. I going to ask your opinion in Messenger on a kit I've put together for Ryan to test. Look for it there in a few minutes.
This is great. I bought a Squier Bass VI a few months ago, with this exact problem, now I have an idea on what to do! Thanks!
Also, what did you do to turn this into a baritone? Is it simply changing strings? If so, what strings are you using?
Changed the strings and altered the setup. Installed a .5º shim as well. I wish I'd had time to make a full video but life happened!
My theory is that fender does shit like this on purpose. Like why change the design of the part for Mexico? It can't really be a cost savings thing just use the same CAD files for the CNC mill. I think they do this to make the American guitars seem more worth it than the Mexican counterparts.
My Squier Classic Vibe Jaguar trem used to do that. Then it stopped. Not sure why. Must have jostled it into a better position. 🙃
I wonder if it just wore down on its own? Wild!
Is that a Squier? I didn’t think they came with the tail plate that says Fender on it. Mine is just blank.
Squier VI, replaced vibrato
@@Puisheen right, I guess it would help if I read the video title ! Cheers.
i fear the man who uses vibrato on a bass
Hey Mike! I was wondering if I could ask you a bit of a personal question? Still somewhat guitar related. You’ve mentioned some personal stuff with mental health in videos and I’d like maybe some advice? If you’d rather speak privately I have no problem
Commenting my email or twitter or something.
I am guessing that the Mexican and American parts are not interchangeable?
You could very easily take the screw and spindle of the American vibrato and install it on the MIM part!
Shout out to seattle
Primo means cousin en españioul
Well. I had always just taken for granted the whole thing was crap and that's why it clicked. Now that I know it's just one part that's crap....
Fender purposely makes crappy design for MIM guitars to make their USA guitars appear worth the price bump. The reality is better design costs nothing/ virtually nothing. It annoys the yell out of me!
Metallic Rub is the name of my cover band. We do slinky-sexy soul covers of old hair-metal hits. We do not rock.
Dude I don't know what you are talking about, l don't even know how I got here but cool vid ig
