The Bass VI is awesome, I mostly aware of it because it has been used by a lot of “Alternative” bands I like: The Cure, Placebo and Sergio Vega used it for the last 2 Deftones albums.
Tfw Sergio finally just let Stef have the bass register and started playing higher than him 😂
Raybasi has entered the Chat
Ayeee
that bass is pretty sick, my local guitar shop had a fender bass 6 and it sounded really good with gain, but it did cost a lot more. Amazing video dude
I think once you master the thump it'll be a great addition to your playing arsenal. Your riffs always have a great bounce to them and the thump will fall right in line with. Looking forward to it for sure.
Sounds cool af !!! I love your riffs
hey thanks!
That feeling when this guitar was created as a bass, but you play it like an electric guitar(I am Russian and use a translator:))
Agreed dude. Thinking of it as a guitar bass as opposed to a bass guitar is a small but necessary distinction for the “correct” approach
if ur russian it should be use translator
Yes mate!
It's a great model!
I have Harley Benton VI guitar bass model!
Great for the price but far away better than the original Fender Squier Guitar Bass VI!
You know!
Cheers from Porto, Portugal
You have become one f my favorite guitar related channel, you are about to take off dude I can fell it you deserve man
Wow, thanks! Doing my very best!
Sounds sick! You should do a "beginner friendly" tutorial on thumping to help plp like me who are interested on starting in the topic to have their first steps ...keep on the content man, following u since the early days and your videos always put a smile on my face :)
That sounds sick man!
That first riff was fucking sick, thumping was a good way to start it but when it transitioned it was probably the best I’ve heard you play
I noticed the thumpy thumps in your Tim Henson pickups video. It's a fun little technique to throw into the mix, huh? Rock on Xander!
Love the riffs you created, may I suggest if you swap pickups that they be black or lipstick type.
Thanks Ray. The Bass VI sounds unexpectedly great for atmospheric stuff.
sick to see you experiment with new techniques
Swap these for some hot single coils or a gnarly stacked single in the bridge and you'll love it! Put a lace sensor in one and it's a beast.
I have the Squire, and I've always messed around with high gain tones with it. As weird as it sounds, I've found it takes high gain very well with the strange switch on, and the tone rolled off. That one doesn't have a strangle switch, but maybe an eq pedal?
Love your videos! What are your thoughts on this guitar for DEEP slam riffs?
I’ve always wanted a bass vi, was going to get a Squier one, but then found out about the baritone jazzmaster and got that. As it’s a very similar guitar, it’s scratched the itch but I still do want one 😂
My first idea that came to my mind, is going for a fishman fluence single coil set. Lot of people says are the most noiseless single coils
sounds brutal.. hey, what tuning is your other guitar in when you use the drop pedal for double drop C#..thanks
back when i had my bass 6 squier i put baritone strings on in instead of what it came with and OH man i loved it then sold it now i need another one and now i will pickup a benton 6 now
i also put hot rail blades in in and was a machine
I hear what you're talking about with the "scratchy" top end of the tone. Have you tried backing the gain off a little, or even raising the action/adding a little bit more neck relief? To me it sounds like either a bit too much gain, or the strings slapping the frets when you really dig in. Might be worth trying before you shell out for new pickups.
If I had to guess, simply adding a good set of single coils in this would make the high-gain sounds much better. These are probably the cheapest (and therefore noisiest, thin, weird sounding) pickups. I've heard Rabea's set of single-coils with Bare Knuckles sound killer but they are expensive.
That slap to brutal chug was epic
very cool 👍👍👍👍
Hey thanks!
Ray it seems like maybe the signal is too hot going into your amp/sim. Ibwould try lowering the signal all together and run high gain on the amp/sim. It just sounds like those single coils are running HOT. Idk if this is the solution but could be worth trying to see if it helps bring some clarity into the use of this instrument. Lmk if you try this and if it works or not. Im super curious now.
I've got one on order. Wanted something for tunings below F. I tuned my 8 string up to G and it's so tight haha.
My first go to would be the fishman single coil set!
that was cool
There is a Bass VI with a Rosewood Fingerboard coming out in the new Fender Vintera II line
how hard is it to make it sound as good as you did in the beginning distortion part
Well now i want to go listen to loathe😂 great vid man. They are hard to get a feel for tho thats ageeeable for something
Got one arriving this week. I have a couple of 8s that I mostly have in F# and drop E. Every now and then I look at 9s and think about getting one but for what I wanna do, it’d just be a waste. I have other guitars that can do full extended range but for big obnoxious riffs this seems like it’ll do the trick. Fingers crossed I get a particularly nice one! For 180 bucks I’m prepared for potential problems haha.
It's likely that the filter on the tone knob is sucking the tone out of the pickups to make it more Bass-y. A new Capacitor might be the trick.
I prefer the Harley Benton JA Baritone BK . Simple reason is bc the bass VI well yeah , still sound like a bass and i miss the attack on it . Nice Video , keep going bro
thanks Chris!
I have the VI (bought it before the JA was released..) with a SD nazgul and it slaps 😁
But it really didn’t like the single coils
That's Sick & Fender 24-100 Gauge Strings ought to liven up the sound.
I’m impressed you can get to C# with .84 and intonation not being an issue and tension being tight enough. I’m playing .95s from string joy on my SubZero Rouge VI and C# on that tension wise is good (a lil slack for my preference but entirely playable I’m just a high tension guy) but intonation is an absolute b*tch.
What are good gage strings for this tuning
Dayum son. Sick thumps.
thanks buddy
I think if I where to have this instrument I would put fender noiseless single coils for the clarity and the noiseless aspect.
Hotrails might help do the trick with the grittyness of the hig gain issue
Where this falls short high gain wise it makes up for any clean to ambient tones you'd want to play in your music.
okay the thumping is fking dope
How do we buy your album if we don’t have Spotify?
Definitely try switch the pickups to something to have more note clarity. Maybe check out the Bare Knuckle Single-coil sized pickups.
BKP single-sized Impulse would be crazy good in this
That riff at the beginning was good
I just tried a .024~.084 bass vi string set into my subzero rogue vi but tbh I felt it was way too heavy gauge? managed to only get it to E1-E3, anything higher than that felt like the neck would simply explode. Felt heavy but also muddy sometimes. I decided to get rid of the set a day after having it and got a .013~.072 set for it, which seems to sound more pleasant, to be honest. I'm not sure I really like the wounded high strings as well, I missed the clarity they usually offer unwounded.
Dunno, so far my experience with a Bass VI tuning was not as pleasant as the experience with my Gretsch G5260 in A standard
To help with the high gain tones in such a low tuning, try using some heavier guage strings.
The low C sharp is an 84 I think we’re good in that regard. Plus, thicker strings muddy tone not clear it up. Appreciate you watching!
@@xanderraymondcharlesthose pickups need totally re-thought for guitar type parts IMO
Set up your amp side with a bass cab and guitar cab. ABy switch and your choice of distortion. Maybe an equalizer pedal on the guitar side. Give you the guitar/bass feel at the same time. Royal Blood style.
P.S. C# or Drop B is the way to go with the Bass VI
Is it because it's a HB or would all 6 bass sound the same?
Lone Wolf Collab uses a Bass VI to cover the Bass and guitar range adding in a Hammond Organ and other instruments to get an old school vibe and it works for them, i think its always about finding what works best for you!
I threw a SD Hot Rail for Strat in on the bridge, got the frets shaved down, new tuning machines are a must! I used the Guyker Vintage Inline locking tuners (They drop right in, but youre gonna have to bore the top two holes bigger to get bass strings in). Massive massive difference! I know you like single coils, but you and i seem to both agree, theyre WAY too noisy! The hot rail looks the part of a single coil, drops right in, has higher hotter output (by a lot), AND humbucks enough of the awful scratchy noisiness. Some of my VST's were literally unlistenable until i put one of these bad boys in. Seriously dude, put one in! Especially compared the ones that come in stock. I have a great tone preset i can send you if you own the Neural DSP Omega Granophyre plugin!
This is my only baritone guitar.... well... bass vi. it is hands down my favorite instrument that i own. It is a Doom Eternal, Black Tongue, Thornhill, Sleep Token MACHINE
So are these meant to be played on a guitar amp or a bass amp? Cuz it seems like kind of a half and half between a bass and a baritone guitar.
Im dying to hear a demo of a bass 6 with a hot rails set.
Mark Hoppus from blink (I know, I know 😅) has used this bass for some songs
Probably the wrong application but worth the try haha. Hot rail that beast and see what up
How do you achieve such clarity with low tunings? I cant for the life of me create any tone lower than drop A without it sounding fuzzy and gross
Can you do a side by side to help us understand what makes a Bass VI different than a Baritone? Is it just a string gauge thing or are there other differences?
Yes, definitely try a pickup swap. With hotter pickups that are a better quality, I think it will be super clear when you crank it. Also, make sure the wiring, shielding, and other things are ok - maybe it’s something stupid that’s causing all that weirdly muddy noise on the high gain setting.
Maybe it's just that model? I've been looking into the Squier one.
Bass VI's are odd creatures. Approaching them lke either a bass or guitar definitely puts people off at the jump, not to mention a lot of bass VI's have intonation problems. But i personally love mine. I primarliry use it for chorused Goth/New Wave movements or noisy walls of fuzz. I hope you have fun with yours!
Maybe some Lace Sensor pickups?
Bro use the Firefly for double drop C. Got mine in double drop D right now
Mod the hell out of it 😎
Time to do a pickup swap video.
Oh boi... That sounds sooo gnarly. Almost too gnarly, even, in my opinion haha. I kinda love the tone of your other baritones a bit more. And yeah, really really looking forward for the new album man! I've been quietly jamming Chronic Pain quite a bit since it was released 🤞🤞
Thanks a ton!
Bari King 👑
I'm guessing somebody recently watched Beato's video with Abasi.
The sound of that guitaar is nit a tight thump. The notes to me sound like they are spraying out, if that makes sense.
what do you mean by "Baritone King"? How did you become a baritone king? what is the quality that one needs to have in order to be called a baritone king?
R O U G H. I like it
bro i beg for you to cover some loathe on this beast
I appreciate the suggestion, but I don’t really do covers anymore. I’m just stoked on doing my own thing. I haven’t made a full cover video since I think May 2021.
3:53 it do got that Tom cat yelp kinda sound 😅
Don’t know if you’ll see this comment ray but in order to do high gain tones on bass you need a compressor pedal to clean up the signal and use a overdrive pedal you like (sd-1) with some sort of preamp pedal. Crank the gain and tone and try and have the level at 9-10 o’clock. That thing will rip
Replace the bridge with a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails or a Bare Knuckle Cobra and I think you’ll be happy. Maybe even a DiMarzio Super Distortion S (IMO)
Ah no wiggle stick
Not my style of music at *all*, but great playing and tone! Try a Fender/Squier Bass VI!
I always thought the BASS 6 WAS a baritone guitar.
i love clean tone of this bassguitar high gain not so much
I’d throw some single coil sized humbuckers in that thing
Pete Parada is a real one
Put an eq pedal first in the chain!
The Bass 6 is the bass for players who want to play bass but like the feel of a regular guitar.
I've seen it used by country guys, maybe there are jazz players who use them too.
I remember reading the fender bass VI was even used on some Beatles recordings
@@adamhaymanmusicyes, John and George often used it when playing bass while Paul was on piano
Not a bass fender didn’t really have a name for it. They didn’t know what it was did not have a baritone back then, but it’s between a bass and baritone.
The hi gain tone it's pickup try new one emg x lace rise low them will change tone because output or cheap way toneride they amzing for price try change tone pot cap I. You can put h ss set in single coil look seymour two lace middle & neck . Over time do it try it got guitar cheap it might be your go to all around guitar just do it those little mod . Add switch cut the mini humbucker like seymour another to go
The Bunn is most definitely the baritone king
Swap pickups
When I use my bass vi for metal I take all the presence out of the tone, makes a world of difference.
That's a bass? I've seen 6 string basses and they didn't look like that very interesting
Yup, the confusion is easy, this one is a bass VI, not a 6 string bass 😄 The main difference is that a bass VI is tuned eadgbe but one octave lower than a guitar and a 6 string bass is beadgc (i think)
please, could you let us hear the bass like it actually sounds, without all the effects?
What do you mean? Like hear the di?
@@xanderraymondcharles for instance yes, or on an amp, so without the distortion sounds.
Ray no see bass. Ray see very long scale length 6-string guitar
Just need better pickups in it
Go hot rails.
Don't quote me on this. Guitar Madness rails just might be the inexpensive answer, here. Wilkinson HR's might be another cheap option.
A pickup swap and locking tuners and you are off to the races
It's a sub octave guitar
Try changing the potentiometers. You might really enjoy it more. I suspect it's 250k so bring it up to 500k
Oh, never mind, its a Harley Benton. I thought it was a Squier
They are the shit. This? Meh...
Disgusting but idk if I dig it or hate it
my thoughts exactly haha
This instrument needs a pickup swap and a treble bleed circuit
No, not at all. You have apparently never touched one.
Sorry Ray, but I think I got a much better tone out of it than you did.
ruclips.net/video/P9yGqVc8leA/видео.html
Tuning it all the way down to C#1 though, you’re gonna need bigger strings for more string tension. I tuned mine down to standard C#
yeah everyone is saying pickup swap but you can see that the low string just has too little tension, same sound i get when i tune my a# tuned lp to like bass e
thats not a bass dude ...
I’m confused. The listing is literally has the name “bass” in the title. Can you please elaborate?
it's not a bass, it's not a guitar too. The bass VI from fender has always been a hybrid instrument.
Its just a baritone guitar fender started that with the bass vi name
