In this lesson, I show you a handy little exercise to help you get you used to improvising over those neo-soul sounding chords.
A common feature of neo soul is the fast paced key changes, it's important to practice this in order to be able to improvise competently over these types of chords.
The exercise is all about vamping between two chords that have a different key center. Some things that make it easier are identifying common notes between the chords, outlining chord tones and using approach patterns to seamlessly transition between the two chords during your lines.
This is something that can take time to develop, so be patient, take it slow and make sure you have fun during the process.

How do we know the D Dorian? Why not D Aeolian or Phrygian? From the perspective of what key signature are we choosing Dorian?
Thanks a lot.
My pleasure!

Thanks dude! 🙏
Hey Simon, seems you really worked hard on your timing. I remember watching your videos two or three years ago and your impros were much more wobbly back then. Now the voicings AND the rhythmic part sound REALLY professional. Anyways, thanks a lot for his one, I really appreciate your effort. Hope you're continuing to put out some more "advanced" stuff like this. I guess this would be very helpful to a lot of people!
Thanks Ab, much appreciated! I'm constantly working on my own playing so I'm glad you noticed an improvement over the last couple of years 😃
ab zee I really dont think that type of wobbly criticism is at all necessary.
@@morfarviksturmm2652 I you are immune to criticism like this you will not progress as a musician I would say. Being a drummer I can tell you for sure that his playing was wobbly years ago. I don't see any personal offense here, sorry for that.
@@abzee733 Ok I understand.I only recently found him and I think he is great now.
@@morfarviksturmm2652 Indeed, he is. And he is a great example on what you can actually achieve with hard work!
Hello I would like to know wahat software you used to displayed the keyboard with the note when you pressed some key on the piano, Thank you so much !
thank you. so nice tutorial. is it a real bass or vst plugin on backing track. it sounds great.
It's a VST 🙂
Omgg dudee im realy noob and i believe the video will help alott
Yeah it definitely will! 🎹🐷
Hi, can you make a difference between jazz and neo soul?
Why does the G blues scale sound good over the Eb major chord ? G is the major third of Eb, is it the reason why ?
Amazing!
Question: why did you choose d dorian and not the regular corresponding mode ionian, and here aeolian mode, like you did with the ebmaj7?
Ionian is just the major scale. Using the D major scale (Ionian) over Dminor would not sound great because you are using a major scale against a minor chord. Whereas D dorian is a minor scale so using it over a minor chord sounds great. Dorian was chosen by mr.PianoPig because its justs a Colour you could just D minor instead of D Dorian.
It was a D minor chord so we have to choose a minor scale or mode to go over the top. We could have chosen D natural minor or D Dorian, and I personally prefer the sound of the Dorian in this context. 🙂
Hi Simon, Thank you for teaching this one, this is the sound I'm looking for to achieve for the longest time. I'm just wondering why are the chords in Gm7 and Fmaj7 while the keys for improvisation are in Emaj7 and Dm7. How does this work?
Relative minor blues scale
I’m not Simon but basically the FMaj7 chord is from the Dm9 chord; if you played a Dm9 chord and removed the root (which is the D), then you’d get what is a FMaj7 chord. Same with the Gm7 chord (Gm7 is just an EbMaj9 without the root). So technically he’s still playing over the EbMaj7 to Dm7 chord progression with, he’s just using different voicings in the left hand to add some colour, which is why using the Eb and D scales still worked. Hope this helped :)
@@4035Gaming Thanks for the explanation, I was not getting it either !
@@4035Gaming Thank you very much for explaining that. That really enlightens me 😀👍
With the inversions being played, Ebmaj7 looks like Gm7 and Dm7 looks like Fmaj7 -- I'll have to think about that for a bit -- must be the scales being played in RH that makes it Ebmaj not Gmin.
Why can you use the g blues scale over the Ebmaj7 chord? Is there a relationship
Is it because rootless Ebmaj9 is Gmin7 (which you play in this video), meaning then you can use the g blues scale on it?
My exact question. I need the theory behind it.
Why are the chords the Imaj7 and the VIIm7?
how does a beginner being to practice to get to this point? (all i know is just learning classical pieces)
its hard to teach neo soul. You have to have certain tyoes of experiences to compose it. The theory is secondary
