I should have commented on this a few years ago Sandy ,however ive just learned how to subscribe . The West Highland Way is a passion of mine .It first came to my attention back in 1989 ,when I entered the W H W Race ,which I covered in 19 hours 55 mins . I ran it again in 1992 in 26 hours 26 minutes .After a hip replacement in 2006 I walked it in 5 days. 1 year later I done it in 4 days .Iwas hurt in a cycling accident in 2009 so a few years before I tackled it again in 2013 after another hip replacement in 2015 I did it again in 2017 and 2018 . this year will be my 8th time after a knee replacement knocked me out of it last year . was up doing the penultimate stage over the weekend . we attempt the W H W on 15th June . . Its a bit weird talking to another Sandy Jack .After all this time ive just refereed to you as Sandy Wiltshire man keep the videos coming you have no idea the cold winter nights in Scotland when you've inspired me to keep camping and hiking and to get into my local woods . so thank you for the inspiration
I did the WHW in 1990, my first ever hike and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We didn't camp, B&B I'm afraid to say. Best 7 days. Your vid brought back pleasant memories.
Excellent first instalment Sandy, it bought back some great memories of our WHW adventures. Really enjoyed your narration and i'm liking the shelter too. Thanks for sharing, on to part 2 now :-)
+Dean Read Thanks Dean. I have seen your video on the WHW. The Luxe is a great shelter for these types of trips. Plenty of room to get wet cloths off and not get your sleeping area wet too.. That was important for us on this walk.
I like the idea of being able to take the inner down and keep dry while packing everything away. A Luxe Hex Peak V4A is at the top of my list for a shelter upgrade as they look great value for money, I don't think I could justify the extra cash for a Trailstar as my other half is an accountant :-) ATB
+Dean Read Those trailstars are expensive. I looked at them too. The Hex in my opinion is exceptional value for money and will be my goto shelter for hiking from now on. I also have a terra nova laser and I know for sure that had I taken that I would have been a lot damper inside due to condensation.
Watched this series a few times before setting out on WHW myself a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately I injured my IT band so couldn't finish. Currently healing up and getting inspired for the next attempt when I've recovered. Rewatching these videos make me want to get back out there.
Very impressed with the trail, scenery and your resolve and spirit. Looking forward to watching the other episodes in the series. Thank you for taking the time to film, edit and post this. What a jewel of a trail. Tahnks for sharing with us. Take care. Adam
+Adam Holbrook Thanks Adam. It was a really nice wlk and I am missing it already. I would go and walk it again tomorrow if I could afford the time off:)
Great Video Sandy, i have been on the WHW in 2009 for the first time,,it was an amazing beautiful hike all along the way,,days of rain ...and and pain in my legs...it hast totally changed my life....greetings and all the best from Austria Harry
Really enjoyed that Sandy. Beautiful scenery, despite the no camping zone Scotland feels like a such a free place. Was almost tempting to put a splash of whisky in my coffee while watching too :-) Matt.
What a Great video. Scotland is a truly beautiful country, I hope to visit there some day. My ancestors are from the west coastal area of Scotland. Thanks again for the adventure.
well done sandy ive done this many times 6 days 5 days 4 days 27 hours and sub 20 hours back in 1989 its a great place and why i keep going back have done it with lots of freinds and family
Very nice setting. I believe this is the most rugged terrain I've seen you in. I love seeing the similarities and differences between the UK and the North Eastern USA. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent Sandy! You keep impressing me as you show us your work and play. Absolutely love your lifestyle. Many thanks for taking us along with you are you visit places I can only think about at the moment! Tanks again and ATB, Dan
The sound of the storm....just fantastic. More though cause one can be inside, dry (hopefully) and cosy listening to the expression of nature, so to speak
Nice one Sandy. lots of people underestimate how hard it is walking with a big pack. you have the same mind set as me one foot infant of the other and get it done. And that's why I was the only one who made it to the top of Snowdon last week. they say stubborn I say determination, cheers for sharing Atb Ron.
Great upload and a cracking trail .... Back in 2010 i seriously misjudged the terrain and tried to cycle through that Loch Lomond section, to make a bad situation much worse i had SPD clip in cycling shoes that are like walking on ice skates....as you can imagine my day went from blissful joy to utter despair in a matter of a few hours ......
Epic first part Sandy, enjoying the trail with you guys. I know too how tough this can be & with heavy Bergins & tough weather it`s one foot in front of the other alright. On to part two.
lovely to see it again, its changed a bit since I did it in 2000. I loved the 1st day didn't enjoy the next 2 or 3 as the path along side Lomaand was all tree roots so you couldn't really look up, but the bit from Bridge of Orchy and down the Devils staircase was superb even if it did rain ... I was glad of the cup of tea at the end !
Wow Sandy, this takes me right back to my bachelor days when I did the WHW with a mate in 1986. There were no camping restrictions then. At Rowardennan we stopped for a couple of pints then went about a quarter of a mile further into the forest and camped. We bathed in the loch and cooked supper on an open fire on the shore - happy days.
Great video chap, so glad that you guys give us the full insight to trips like this. I want to walk the west highlands way next year and I've learnt so much from just watching videos!! You have a fantastic trip and looking forward to the next instalment!!
Hi there chap. Just uploading a video where I mentioned you and some other RUclips guys that I love watching and respect. I did mention something after watching you and barking badgers highland way videos. I hope no offence was taken! It was a comment about my own weight and not meant as anything offensive!!! Have a favour to ask, I've watched your videos of your walk on the ridgeway (hats off to you and thanks for taking the trouble to share your moments, good and bad! ). You mentioned some good advice about looking after your feet from a guy called Mack Tightwad?? I can't see a video about blisters etc. Could you point me in the right direction sir?? Thanks.
Great video Sandy ,only bad part is it ended, but the good news is there is another part to this walk! Great scenery and just wish the wether had been better for you! Really looking forward to part 2!
yes thats how to make real tea, none of that mamby pamby dishwater stuff......me n my missus are really enjoying this sandy, and badger if your reading.....very greatfull that you have taken the time to take us with you....always love your excursion/adventure vids..they are a real treat in the evenings..Thankyou sandy, and barking badger....i hope the weather is good to you and you are enjoying it has much as we are watching it all....ATB to you bothe...wish we were there
Hello again Sandy😊. I've watched and re-watched many of your vlogs and I have developed a love for the aluxe hexpeak v4. Keep up the great work and stuff😊😊🙏🙌👍🏼👍🏼
Fair do's to you and your friend Sandy this was a spectacular yet arduous journey due largely to that harsh weather. But did you moan...not at all. Awesome stoic spirit. You even said the view was stunning in pissing down rain. Brilliant! I see you had them trustee new walking shoes on. Good going in them then. Weirs way....one of my favorites. I could go on. A great hike, restorative time in the Bothy and exploration. All the best. Mark.
Wonderful first installment Sandy. The Wiltshire man and the Badger, sounds like an epic tale :) From the looks of it you gents did indeed have an awesome adventure. I really like the the tents you guys are using! And the sawyer mini is a real gods send! Looking forward to the next part! Take care -Chris
+Windham Woodcraft Thanks Chris, The tents worked just as well as they looked. Kept us warm, dry and very little condensation. Worth while bit of kit Sandy
An incredible journey you both undertook and very inspiring too, looking forward to the next part and appreciate you taking the time to record this and in such harsh conditions ~Peace~
Really enjoyed that , we walked it in 2010 I remember the ups and downs around Loch Lomond and wondering if I could make it. Thankfully the walking got easier. We got the bug and went on to walk many more. Thanks for a trip down memory lane. Ps the goats stink !
I ordered his book cuz I often met him after doing the ultimate challenge a few times and I imagine it's a very good ref manual or read we used to dip into it when I was an instructor and it brought back some nice memories it is very reasonable on French Amazon right nowSo thanks to you sandy you rekindled my interests in this publication
Thanx for the reply on the trangia sandy very help full.thanx for sharing all your vids they are brill ! The vids are getting me out doors as I am a carer for my wife .would love to have weekend with you camping some day
great video sandy thanx for sharing , im looking to do alot more walking and one of the things ive decided to do is the west highland way , looking to to it some time this summer. so its great to see you kit and your experience, look forward to watching the rest of your journey.
Well done. The WHW is a great walk and enjoyed doping it with my wife last year. Hope it inspires you to do more camps up in Scotland. Have a new film myself up of the new Terra Nova Southern Cross shortly. Look forward to the next parts. ATB RS.
I enjoyed part one Sandy. 96 miles is the exact length of my first LDP (not an official one) the Peakland Way by John Merrill done when I was a youthful 18. I think I've walked it three times in all. I've a fair bit of experience of ultralight weight kit so I'm always interested to see what others use. I'm looking forward to part 2. ATB Rob.
Hi sandy Bringing back great memories. I did it way back. I aslo remember having too heavy a pack, but now im on long distance walk 13, i have the ideal weight sorted. looking forward to the rest of the walk. ALB Norrie
Great video Sandy, I'm looking forward to the next now. Pity you had so much rain but its still a truly lovely area. And beautiful as it is that section from Inversnaid through to the bothie comes as a nasty surprise. atb Andrea.
I walked this two wks after you both did, It's nice to be able to re visit your video to remind me of the trip. It was my 2nd WHW , off to try it for the third time next April Again.
Excellent video Sandy, really enjoyed watching : ) I've done the WHW a few times but the last time was about 7 years ago, a few things have changed along the way, new signs etc and that memorial, But still brings back memories of great walks with my mates. It is a lot harder walk than some people think, especially when carrying all your own kit and food. Fair play to you and badger. I remember one trip in 2005 when the loch lomand stretch really hammered my feet. An Doune bothy is looking a hell of a lot better, it was almost empty and covered in graffiti when we were there last. Going to watch part 2 now. Thank you for taking the time to film and share it with us : ) All the best, Jay
I did part of the West Highland Way from north to south, a group of us went and planned to wild camp the whole way. Too much pack weight, injuries, factional strife, torrential rain, and general over-ambition of the distances we could make, were among the many scuppering factors that had us bail out at the foot of Loch Lomond! I have to go back and tackle it again, older but wiser :-)
+Forest Prepper Thanks FP. It was a tough walk in places but I just had to lift my head up and the sights took the pain of sore feet and legs away:) ATB Sandy
that stretch along Loch Lomond is like a bloody assault course lol but is probably my favourite section of The WHW, love camping there. Lucky that you got the bothy all to yourselves as that particular bothy is usually one of the busiest.
Traversing history as well as landscape makes for a special hike. And where better to fortify your tea with single malt? As you note at the end, you gain your "hiking legs," which always happened for me after 3 days, too, as one walks their way into shape. Looking forward to the rest of the journey.
What a nice hike Sandy. Wonderful scenery. Can't for the next episode, one step at a time. Good that you sterilized the cup since they carry nasty parasites. Sawyer filters are fantastic. Glad to see the Wiltshire Man again. Peace, Ken
Brought back some memories doing the West Highland way many years ago .keep on watching this 3 parter .just brilliant sandy .

Wonderful Sandy! Too bad for the wet weather but you made the most of it as always. I'm on to part two.

I enjoyed part one Sandy. 96 miles is the exact length of my first LDP (not an official one) the Peakland Way by John Merrill done when I was a youthful 18. I think I've walked it three times in all. +Robert Radcliffe I think I need to get my payload even lighter Robert, but it will mean a change of pack and some gear and it becomes expensive!
+Wiltshire Man yes I agree often ultralight gear comes at a premium and/or is difficult to source much of the best being from US companies.
Lovely First Part Sandy.
Quite Informative Too.

Going to watch part 2 now. Thank you for taking the time to film and share it with us : )
All the best, Jay
+GoonieBushcraft There was still some graffiti at the bothy but it wasn't too bad. It offered us good sanctuary for the night.
Sandy

I did part of the West Highland Way from north to south, a group of us went and planned to wild camp the whole way. Too much pack weight, injuries, factional strife, torrential rain, and general over-ambition of the distances we could make, were among the many scuppering factors that had us bail out at the foot of Loch Lomond! I have to go back and tackle it again, older but wiser :-)
Sometimes your better off going alone
Looked awesome sandy well done to you both atb FP
+Forest Prepper Thanks FP. It was a tough walk in places but I just had to lift my head up and the sights took the pain of sore feet and legs away:)

wonderful film,thank you.x
+Patricia Oakes Thanks Patricia
that stretch along Loch Lomond is like a bloody assault course lol but is probably my favourite section of The WHW, love camping there. Lucky that you got the bothy all to yourselves as that particular bothy is usually one of the busiest.
+headforthehills Yes the far end of Loch Lomond is tough going for sure. The Bothy was good too.
Traversing history as well as landscape makes for a special hike. And where better to fortify your tea with single malt? As you note at the end, you gain your "hiking legs," which always happened for me after 3 days, too, as one walks their way into shape. Looking forward to the rest of the journey.
+Random Button Pusher Thanks RBP. Yes it has always been that way for me too. I walk myself into shape.
Sandy
What a nice hike Sandy. Wonderful scenery. Can't for the next episode, one step at a time. Good that you sterilized the cup since they carry nasty parasites. Sawyer filters are fantastic. Glad to see the Wiltshire Man again. Peace, Ken
+KennethKramm THanks Ken. Yes I will not take any risk with Slugs! I hope to be going on another adventure shortly.
Take care
