The Toyota FJ Cruiser… Victim of poor timing!

  • In this video I showcase my 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Ultimate Edition and talk through the significance of this beautiful machine. I highlight the sale numbers and express the value of this unique vehicle. Toyota took a leap on this bold offering back in 2003 with its concept, people loved it… so they rushed it to production and had over 55,000 units sold in its first year. After the 09 recession, sale numbers dipped drastically…
    Would buy an FJ Cruiser if they offered it today?
    The FJ is still being sold around the world. The Middle East just had their last wave sold, the 2022 FJ Cruiser Final Edition. This 4.0L V6 tied to the bulletproof 5 speed auto transmission is a total masterpiece. What do you think?
    Have you consider buying a Trail Teams? Offered in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and of course 2014.
    Thanks for watching.

    I looked at a couple of these a few years ago but ultimately went with a loaded 2007 4Runner. Bit more practical, and the sunroof and retractable rear window were important features for me.
    That color and the BFGs with white letters out looks awesome… best spec on FJs for sure!

    Should get the N-Fab side steps that bolt onto the sliders; your wife will thank you for it and it also stops wear on the side bolsters. N-Fab supplies Toyota the sliders. Side steps shoud have been standard. For off roading, the side steps merely unbolt.

    I will buy it if it’s reasonably priced. If I’m not mistaken I think the base price for the starter model back in 2007 was somewhere $27k

    Hello Untamed!
    Enjoyed your videos and I like how your FJ looks. Quick question, is your tires 33” and if yes did you do a body mount chop or do you have a lift kit? Any rubbing issues?

    the manual had the center differential making it basically like the 2-door Landcruiser Prado/Lexus GX460. A 2 door short wheelbase prado/GX/fj would be nice but in the USA buyers associate price with "size"... so...

    We purchased one new in 2011. Currently has 148k with not a single issue though 12 years under the sun and some off road pinstripes has the paint begging for a respray. It’s such a fun car but it is certainly basic. What a machine in the dirt though!

    My wife loved the FJ. I found a fairly low-mileage 2014 TTUE with 68k on it. She loves it. Katzkins with blue insert seats. Otherwise it is stock. A little more primitive than my 23 Raptor but, it is a pretty cool machine.

    When a modern model is released as a hybrid or full on electric designers should delete 3 wipers for 2, create easy access to rear, add better visibility where blind spots are.

  • @EthosAtheos
    @EthosAtheos Год назад +1

    Not only would I buy one new today, especially at it's sub 40K price tag. But I do own a 2013 I traded my 2007 for last year.
    What I love:
    The white roof, it keeps the vehicle much cooler in the summer sun. I've measured it and it is 20 degrees cooler than my 07 rabbit parked side by side.
    The engine and transmission are awesome if you do basic up keep.
    It can go anywhere a Wrangler can, but it can also drive home afterwards. No need to bring a trailer to the trail.
    The IFS is amazing on unpaved forest roads. Wranglers struggle to keep up with me.
    What not to love.
    The headlights should have been HIDs. They suck! Your going to end up adding extra lights.
    The visibility from the driver seat is a crime against the auto world. It has a blind spot you can park 3 tractor trailers in. Seriously I cant see one directly behind me if it is close.
    The hatch window should roll down like the 4runners. The rear most windows should have opened like van windows. The rear doors should have had roll down windows.
    It needed 2 gas tanks. 19 gal full tank and 15 gal to warning light isn't enough. My average range is under 250mi. It does better under 45mph but for every day driving she is very thirsty and needed 36-40 gallons of fuel on board. The Australian and UAE version did have an aux tank from factory we should have had them to.
    The interior is spartan yes, but not cheap. Nothing ever rattles or comes off. The plastic doesn't crack or turn to goo the way my VW's did. The floor isn't "chinsey" (avoid this term it isn't good) or "plasticky". The floor is designed to be washed down for easy cleaning. A carpet would have been dumb in a vehicle designed for off road like the FJ. My only complaints about the floor is the driver side kick block tends to snap off. It doesn't have a water drain. It is supper easy to install one if you need it. But it isn't a boat so choose not to need it!

    My wife is looking at a 2014 FJ with the same package and color. Mileage is 114K and priced at #32.5, which is close to 100% of the original MSRP. Assuming the condition is very good (based on pics prior to personal inspection), is this a fair price?

  • @Jay-bw3fl
    @Jay-bw3fl Год назад

    Yep, bad timing. Even f150 and Silverado sales were cut in half during 08-09. I think the new Toyota compact cruiser ev concept looks like the perfect modernization of the fj and gets rid of the tonka cartoon looks but it’s just too small and of course…it’s an ev. Sad times ahead.

    • @EthosAtheos
      @EthosAtheos Год назад

      Ev don't have to be bad. Hell for off road they could be better than ICE. But manufacturers are going to need to be dragged kicking and screaming to it. We need user replaceable battery cells. Without that and Ev is just a disposable phone that has a car price tag. Charging infrastructure will need to be expanded, but that is happening on its own. Range will be an issue but mostly charging times are the problem. A 200-300 mile range in hot or cold weather is fine IF you can recharge or exchange the battery pack in under 15 mins. Just like filling up at a truck stop.

    • @Jay-bw3fl
      @Jay-bw3fl Год назад

      @@EthosAtheos yeah but that’s exactly the problem, manufacturers don’t want you to be able to replace the battery easily. They want them to be disposable. EVs are bringing in a whole new era of planned obsolescence. The auto industry has always been THE king and trailblazer of the concept of planned obsolescence. Their next greedy focus is to push subscriptions. Get ready to pay monthly for your heated seats to work on your new ev even tho they are already installed. You can be optimistic all you want but it’s not reality.

    • @EthosAtheos
      @EthosAtheos Год назад +1

      @@Jay-bw3fl I agree, it will take either trade organization or government regulations to force the issue. At some point customers will not tolerate it anymore. You see this with the right to repair and tractors.

    did this fj build the enthusiasm over time to then go into overlanding overdrive post fj cruiser years? the tacoma has been a big seller for 20 yrs. not too different than the way soldiers turned to cars post ww2, now it's just overlanding and adventure, living one's life so to speak...all that being said i want the safety stuff in my cars so no I would not buy one exactly like that unless I had to. just my piece.
