- We know that Anna Kendrick can act alongside vampires. We know that she can sing (and move about cups around at the same time!). And now, with her directorial debut 'Woman of the Hour', we know that she is talented on the other side of the camera, too.
In the latest episode of Esquire’s Freeze Frame, Kendrick takes us behind-the-scenes of the film, which tells the story of American serial killer Rodney Alcala, who appeared on a dating gameshow in the middle of a crime spree in the Seventies. Kendrick plays Sheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actor and contestant on The Dating Game (think: American Blind Date) who wins date with Alcala. Not exactly hitting the jackpot.

This movie captured a woman’s overcompensation in chilling conversation SO WELL. The laughing once he gets quiet to fill space, the pleasantries and politeness all the women display while fearing for their life is done sooo well.
Yes!!! Like you could feel her inner turmoil.
Bro yes!! Even in the beginning with her weird neighbor ://
I love Anna
Well said
i would have never guessed that this was her first time directing or that it was a low budget movie. she did a fantastic job
that bar scene had my skin crawling, adding the character shaking her head to the waitress was a really good decision. anna kendrick really knew the movie she was directing
This film was chillingly accurate to what a woman’s intuition is and the downplaying we are expected to do .
I also appreciate the brutal scenes were not distasteful and graphic.
I loved the depiction of the tension, the embarrassment, the self-doubt, the fear, the stress ,the confusion and the sheer terror women feel a lot of the times
Yes! It was one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen because it was so real!
I was so, so, so impressed with this film. It captures the exact feeling of dread women feel while navigating the world- who to trust and who to fear. It felt representative of that and not exploitative like other films.
That internal gaslighting, second-guessing feeling is so difficult to explain to someone who is not intimately familiar with what being on the opposite end of that kind of power imbalance and terror is like but it is so clearly communicated and obvious in the film that this is what the women are experiencing. It shows the inner turmoil, fear, embarrassment, and desire to survive so clearly. And all only with non-verbal signals, body language, the tension between characters and the most subtle of facial expression shifts.
A terrifying and masterfully created film.
The parking lot scene is terrifying. It was so well done & it hit so close to home. Most women have experienced some form of this scenario to one degree or another
Yah. It stinks. Just the other night. Going to a pharmacy near closing. I park closest to the door. There is a car next to me with a a man sitting in the driver seat… the man looks like he’s listening to a podcast, I assess and he seems ok. The parking lot is mostly empty darkish. Some homeless people way across lot (but at least 50ft). I get my purchase and there is a passenger now in the car next to me, so I’ll have to go right next to them to get in my car.
So, I have options… 1) if I was really scared, go back in the pharmacy and walk out with the staff. 2) get in through my passenger side and unlock that door only (my passenger seat was a mess though) or 3) go in the driver side.
I go in the driver side…. Passenger of the other car hits of me and asks how I am. I say curtly “hi. Have a good night” get in the car, glance behind me to make sure no one is in the dark back, lock and drive.
I was fine. The person was probably harmless. But, I know enough to know that I need to be on alert. Because… if that was a person with bad intent, it wasn’t a good position.
I’m 38 now and overweight and frumpy and still worry about this. Whenever I lose weight, harassment goes up 5-10x. I actually have some trauma around weight loss because of it… Doesn’t feel safe. I took Krav Maga awhile back and it helped my confidence a lot (how often do we practice punching and getting attacked?)
Anyways, this movie did a fantastic job of showing the woman’s experience.
When I was 15 I was walking to my friend’s house around the corner. We lived in a small town in Mississippi and I remember I was carrying a styrofoam cup of sprite. I heard some man yell out “HEY!” behind me and it sounded threatening not friendly. I started walking faster and I could hear him walking behind me. He yelled at me again and kept walking towards me and I threw my cup and took off running to my friend’s house. Never forgotten how scared I felt in that moment and I never walked to her house by myself at night again.
That "which one of you will hurt me?" in the trailer i keep repeating bc the delivery is immaculate~
The shake in her voice when she says 'what?' is so effective for me. Her face is calm, but you can feel the fear in that second.
I watched this movie with my best friend last night and one thing I loved was all the small moments where female side characters tried to protect or help or uplift other women.
This was one of the most frightening movies I have ever seen, because it is so realistic in the portrayal of the fear women deal with every day!
the Tiki Bar scene was incredible...subtle, creepy, psychologically intense.
This scene was done so well. Even I as a guy (5'11" 215 lbs) was completed freaked out by his change in demeanor and dialogue. Then the parking lot encounter where he follows her and stalks her!! She had 100% great intuition about Alcala. Saved her life. She even tells him "I'm not going anywhere with you!" Chilling.
This film was utterly brilliant. What a directorial debut.
As a 38-year-old mother of three wonderful children and a supportive amazing husband, I couldn't help but reminisce about my fun-filled early 20s while watching this film. It brilliantly captured the thrill and potential dangers of dating, making me reflect on my own experiences with some rather creepy encounters. Anna as an actor, who also directed, delivered an outstanding performance that truly resonated with me. I can't wait to see the accolades coming her way. This film left a lasting impression on me, and I absolutely loved it!
I think Anna did an amazing job for her directorial debut. The tension was very prominent throughout the film, which I really enjoy when I watch thrillers. Daniel did a fantastic job in this role as Rodney, he is so scary and his eyes really said a lot! I also enjoyed the chemistry between Daniel and Anna, and wish they would’ve had more screen time together someway. Some of the scenes were shot very interesting as well. Overall, great film and look forward to more of Anna’s work!
The freaky thing for me is that when I watched the movie, I didn't originally hear what he muttered under his breath and I thought that was on purpose because of how she answered, but hearing it HERE and her explaining the thoughts around that section is wild and gave me chills!
Wait what did he say? I couldn’t understand it when I watched the movie and I can’t understand it here either…
@@dancingdani25 He says, "maybe you get your fucking head bashed in."
@@dancingdani25 right when she turns to walk off he says "when you get your fucking head bashed in" which is when she stops and turns back.
@@RJJJJay oh geez. Thank you
I had to rewind twice before I got it. Then I started literally say run, just run! Which I’m sure was going through her head and the others. I’ve seen documentaries on Alcala and the disgusting things he’s done. This was an amazing take on the victims perspective. A male friend of mine actually recommended it to me.
Just watched this with my husband and was blown away-it shook me. I was in high school and college around this same time period and all the feelings of being vulnerable and pressured and uncertain were reignited. All of the strategies we use because we are prey.
I’m married to a wonderful man and this movie made HIM get it in a visceral way.
I love that, that your husband got it. Most of the talk around the movie is women seeing their experience validated, but I think every man should see this film.
This film was so, so well done. Fantastic directorial debut by Anna Kendrick and such great work by all involved. I'm actually weirdly grateful this film exists because of what a good job it does of centering the women's stories and undercurrents that women have to deal with so brilliantly
It's precisely the subtleties that make this movie so magnificently relatable to real life. I think most of us women have had those moments when a switch gets flipped and we're suddenly very uncomfortable in a situation. Nothing needs to be blatantly obvious. This is about a woman trusting her intuition.
Superb directing from a woman's perspective of vulnerability & strength with men.
This movie was such a perfect depiction of the fawn response
For a directorial debut Anna Kendrick knocked this out of the ballpark. I was a little girl when The Dating Game was on . I remember many of the contestants that stood out and even some questions and answers . I Loved that show a lot..... remember I was a little girl so the cheesy~ness of the 70's was not anything I got hung up on.
I liked the style of the clothes and seeing who got matched with whom. I do not believe the casting would have been better with anyone else . It felt real , raw , and I was literally trembling in some situations. I do remember Rodney being on the show but I mean I was a little girl and it was not anything he said on the show that made me remember that it was him when News of his arrest was released . It was his eyes that I remembered I have always paid close attention to eye contact.... there really is something about eyes that do not lie .
I feel that from the time that Rodney was on the show and from the time he was caught it was a lot of time that had passed . Now I am just going from memory and not Googling up the timeline so I might be off about the timeline but for me that is just how it felt.
The accuracy of the ending of Woman Of The Hour does not exactly line up with what I remember of how the final girl got away but I would not critique this directorial debut to harshly . I am a fan of Anna's and I Love that she picked a topic I knew of from my childhood .
This could not have been very easy and I will watch Woman Of The Hour again .
Literally one of THE BEST movies I've seen all year!!❤❤❤❤
Really good movie. The parking lot scene was so intense.
Anna Kendrick is one of my all-time fave actors and I have a strong feeling we’ll be seeing more directing from her in the future. I like how she broke down these scenes and explained them so well, and in many cases so thoroughly, for example when talking about having to film two different days of one scene from the Dating Game due to the budget for hiring the audience. Bravos, Anna 👏🏻
It’s so sad to think how common these moments happen but it’s also oddly sweet because women just know and how to protect each other
such a subtle message - this was great - this is whst happens when women direct - kudos Anna
I’ve been purposely watching movies/shows directed and/or written by women and the difference is so clear!
This movie gave me the chills like no other, I had to look away from some scenes because of the traumatic nature. Then I realised that the scenes weren't even graphic, great direction, dialogue and tension
Kendrick did an excellent job directing this really intense script and shining a light on the misogyny of the 1970s..
I love seeing the older women as the makeup artist and the waitress.
Anna Kendrick is the best!
I love you Anna Kendrick❤
Love this movie, AK brilliant as always.
This movie was sooo good
She is so talented
She’s great.
Probably one of the most important feminist movies i have seen this year. Subtle, chilling , real. Miss Kendrick and her creative team pulled of a Hitchcockien masterpiece.
can't wait for her to direct more things, now
God when women direct stories about women the sophistication and nuance is a hit of crisp mountain air above the smog of men writing their “strong female character” porn
Impressive debut. Congrats, Anna!
Loved this movie
Brava 👏🏽🙌🏽
amazing movie! haunting. great job, anna!
I love the way Anna says " like cherries flambe " on the movie! I had to Google cherries flambe after watching Woman of the hour, for the second time. I wonder how many people have Googled it themselves lol! By the way, I can watch it over and over again. It's a really great movie !!
God it really makes me sad that those moments of gaslightining are so good in the movie and Anna does a great job directing. But to know she experienced that in her life. Some douche bag gaslighting her. Hopefully this is very therapeutic for her
I really Fucking enjoyed this movie. Im a sucker for Horror, Creepiness, Charming Characters, Terrifying Characters, Real Stakes, Comedy & Social Commentary all done well. Im happy for Anna Kendrick. She nailed it. And the team.
I will watch everything else this woman directs 👏
thanks never dating again
Same girl! 😂
Movie is incredible
Stop being afraid to be rude!
💗🔥❤🔥❤🔥
With all the crap direction that’s come out over the past 4 years, this was refreshing.
I think the music in the background whilst Anna kendrick was talking was a bit too upbeat. I loved the movie, the acting, the shots and the atmosphere can’t wait to see what else Anna Kendrick directs
I really like Kendrick. I'm glad she hasn't taken the path many celebrities do of getting their lips inflated. She looks normal!
great film but it ends way too quick - wanted more and i felt slightly disappointed at the the end
that it finished with on screen text rather than anything else - problem is its a very long story that went on for years so i suppose they had to finish it some how
I think the focus of it is the dating game incident specifically, and to center the women’s perspectives and show the intersection of multiple layers of misogyny (dating game objectification, gaslighting, dismissal, excusing/enabling behavior, literal rape/murder), not to be a glorifying serial killer biopic.
i wonder why she didnt try to make them all not look more similar to the real ppl
Why are all the comments about women feeling like prey, and powerless?
because we often do?
As @angela-ul2dk said, because we are made to feel that way often. That is what this film is about.
The accuracy of this movie makes Bohemian Rhapsody look genuine
How do you mean?
@@OscarOrtega13 as in…I’ve heard fairytales more accurate than this crap
@@holmesey2000 it’s a movie based on true events but it’s fictionalized… it’s not supposed to be 100% accurate. That’s what documentaries are for.
@@OscarOrtega13 agreed…but Anna Kendrick full on BS in this movie. She made it about women empowering with her changing the questions, which never happened. Oh man we have to feel bad about the black chick the security guard didn’t believe…racism and woman empowerment that never happened and solely put in to fit todays narrative. Rodney was bachelor 1 too but I guess that’s nit picking at this point.
@@holmesey2000it’s art bro. The changes made aren’t for girlboss purposes, the changes to the questions and situations are specifically aiming to highlight the different kinds of sexist attitudes, behaviors, systems, and violence women had to navigate, because this is a story with a message and a structure, not a documentary.
I came away from this movie feeling that it was very inauthentic to the case, totally misrepresenting many of the real people involved in a way that I don't think was fair, just based on my understanding of what went down. I don't claim to be an expert, but after watching the documentary Dating Death, I feel even more so that this movie is basically a lie from start to finish, as it pertains to the case. But I know it hit a chord with a lot of people anyway. I think it would have been better if they just made it a purely fictional tale.
Not true. She worked with the prosecutor and the police detective who finally put him behind bars to research for the film. All of the scenarios about the murders were directly from the case files, only with names and appearances changed so as not to directly reenact the murder/assault of a real person.
The film was not written by Anna, and was always written with Cheryl/Sheryl as the ongoing narrative thread, with the dating game as the central point, with Rodney Meets Sheryl being the original title. When the film was written, the actual episode of the dating game was not available online, so the decision was made early on to add inspiration from another episode, where the female contestant actually did improvise her questions.
Funnily enough, the full dating show segment with Rodney Alcala was uploaded shortly after the film had been released.
@nobodyknowsmeimsure
That's wrong. I saw that episode years ago. And they admitted to making stuff up.
@nobodyknowsmeimsure
There were some facts from the real story but a lot of stuff was fictionalized with Cheryl. And the friend of the victim didn't remotely resembles anyone I found in the case.
Such a distorted depiction of the 70's.....a real 'me too' view of men in retrospect...you were not there Anna... your source is second-hand knowledge
Aw someone resembles that depiction and doesn’t want to admit it
@@flux.aeterna Hey yeah true...the Wokies are everywhere
She did a crappy job on this.
First of all, she couldn't even get the order of the bachelor's right on the show. Alcala was bachelor number one (1) not three (3). I mean how do you screw that up? That's so simplistic. Then she made literally every guy looks like an imbecile or a creep. I know it was a 70s, and misogyny was huge bavk then, but it wasn't literally every single male on the planet.
Just shows her stereotypical point of view of how she looks at men. No, this was not historically accurate AT ALL! The dialogue was completely cringey. And the God they got to play Rodney Alcala doesn't even look similar to him. You just can't pick a random guy slap a long wig on them and think that he's going to fit the role. And this was done by Netflix so there's really no excuse. They managed to get Zac Efron to look similar to Ted Bundy on his performance. Evan Peters looked damn near exactly like Jeffrey Dahmer. And the two guys that got to play the Menendez brothers and their new series look similar to the real life Brothers. I'm not saying they have to look exactly like the real life character but I mean at least try...
It's almost like getting Brad Pitt to play Ronald Reagan.🙄🤦🏾♂️
There's no reason to change names because all the names of the victims are public record. The screenplay was lazy and so was the research. 4/10
I agree 100%. I liked it more than you did but you make excellent points. Yeah my biggest gripe was the inaccurate depiction of the Dating Game episode at a basic level with the seating order and the actors looking nothing like the real contestants.
How about at the end, when the cops show up within a few minutes of being called to a fairly remote location? I thought all the men, especially cops, of that time were totally dismissive of women, let alone a teenager? So they just sent out a couple of cars hauling ass like that?
It wasn't a documentary baby boy. 🙄
@@briarelyse5136 That doesn't exempt it from getting the bare-minimum facts straight.
Totally bruh the guy who played Rodney not even close I dunno why casting team picked up and Danial zovatto just looks like a boy next door but Rodney persona kinda macho
@@briarelyse5136got it but movie about real events based right Rodney Alcala was real bruh so we want someone similar to Rodney if movie based on real crime
