  • On 7 April 1975 Rithie Blackmore left Deep Purple dissatisfied with the funky drifts the band had taken.
In the summer of the same year, on holiday in Milano Marittima he met by chance the talented accordionist Roberto Giraldi, aka Castellina, who at the time already had a "liscio" orchestra founded together with the saxophonist Giovanni Pasi.
Blackmore, eager to form a power trio, like "Emerson Lake and Palmer" or "Jimi Hendrix Experience", accepted Castellina's invitation to improvise a jam session in the historic Woodpecker nightclub.
Thus the folk tradition of Romagna was married to the blues roots of the English guitarist with state-of-the-art results: the trio "CPG: Castellina Pasi Blackmore" was born with an innovative sound that inspired various artists over the years including Carlos Santana and Adriano Celentano.
Even the Russian head of state Leonid Brezhnev, struck by Blackmore's virtuosity, wanted to organize a great concert at the Bolshoi together with the Red Army Choir A.V. Aleksandrov, but that's another story.
However, "Castellina Pasi Blackmore" had a short life: the record companies of the time did not look kindly on the new formation, considering it not very commercial and convinced Blackmore to create a group more similar to Deep Purple: thus Rainbow was born.
Here is a rare testimony from the CPGs. Happy listening.
